Hello Deor. 

    I have a WP:RPP. I noticed that you had an edit problem starting on 24 June 2023 concerning Ward Kimball and edits by 185.238.219.28 (.3, .29, .45, 49, .54, 78 .110. 124., etc.(IP address keeps hopping)).‎ This person has made unconstructive edits of other articles. Others and I have posted warnings on some of his talk pages. This person (apparently from Schlupfing, city of Landau a.d.Isar, Germany) appears to be editing purposefully WP:VAND or he may have some mental or communication problem related to his continual WP:DIS. 
    In any event, there is a WP:VAND / WP:DIS / WP:WAR at Jeanne Cagney involving this person and me. He started his improper edits on 28 May 2023, and, after an absence for awhile, came back today. The repeated edits by this person make no sense. I even tried to edit to resolve for him the problem, but the person refuses to relent and there is no hope for WP:CON; therefore, specially since you have experience with this person before, please enter a WP:RPP at the Jeanne Cagney: Revision history. I would ask for blocks, but considering his IP hopping, I hope page protection will be sufficient.

@Quaerens-veritatem: I've semiprotected the article for a month. If you notice this editor causing trouble elsewhere, or if the trouble recurs after the PP expires, drop me a note. Heart of the West

Source was the scan of The Heart of the West published with copyright date 1904, as noted in the edit. However, I have asked a fellow editor whether he can corroborate the date on the publication, and it seems the chronology for O. Henry publications is thoroughly muddled. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:48, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

@EncycloPetey: Yes, I saw the Hathi Trust entry; but several booksellers who are offering the 1907 edition claim it to be the first ed., and as you say, the chronology of O. Henry publications is rather confused. (To say nothing of the fact that 1904 seems awfully early, since that's the same year as Cabbages and Kings, O. Henry's first book.) You also neglected to move the collection's entry to the corresponding chronological position among his works, and I was unwilling to just move it without further confirmation of the putative 1904 date. At this point, I'm unable to assert the 1904 with confidence. If it has any truth, my suspicion now is that it is a publication date for one or more of the individual stories in magazines, rather than for the publication of the volume as a collection. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:13, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

WP:ENGVAR

I have seen the edit summary you provided when reverting my recent edit at Gerund. Assuming that what you say about the use of commas in American English is correct, Hans-Friedrich Tamke imposed American usage on an article not previously written with that usage, which I reverted. My understanding is that doing so is compliant with WP:ENGVAR, and I don’t see why you should repeat the imposition of American English. JBW (talk) 21:18, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

@JBW: I admit, I didn't look closely at the history of the article before reverting your edit. Nevertheless, if the lack of commas after "e.g." was the only indication of British usage in the article, I don't see that as establishing that the article's consistent usage was BrE and that adding them was an "imposition" of AmE. One would have to examine the article thoroughly for other American or British usages to determine what the overall national variety (if any) used in the article was—a task I'm certainly not willing to undertake just now. If you want to go in and eliminate the commas again, I won't revert you; but without more evidence, I don't think your statement that the article was "not previously written with that [i.e, American] usage" is necessarily correct. I have no knowledge as to whether practice in this varies in different national traditions, but I am willing to take your word for it. The version without commas seems much more natural to me, but I don't feel strongly enough one way or the other to pursue it further. I really just mentioned it because I thought it was a bit funny that your edit summary indicated that you had seen things the opposite way round to how I had seen them. 🤗 JBW (talk) 11:15, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Earlier information on this page was against a particular community, which is morally wrong. You are targeting a particular community by referring to a article which targets a particular community. I just want the right information on page.

O. Henry

@Vchimpanzee: I was confused by "The O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro is also named for Porter, as is US 29, which is O. Henry Boulevard", failing to distinguish between Greensboro and Asheville and between the avenue and the boulevard. I've readded your edit (rewording a bit) in the "Legacy" section, where I think it makes more sense, as that's where all the other stuff named in honor of Porter is mentioned. The problem with where you added it, which is why I didn't do it there, is that the preceding information is unsourced and it looks like my source is the source for all the information.   • Following a motion, the contentious topic designation of Prem Rawat has been struck. Actions previously taken using this contentious topic designation are still in force.
  • Following several motions, multiple topic areas are no longer designated as a contentious topic. These contentious topic designations were from the Editor conduct in e-cigs articles, Liancourt Rocks, Longevity, Medicine, September 11 conspiracy theories, and Shakespeare authorship question cases.
  • Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
  • Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.

ParserFunction error

Hi Deon, I'm wondering about these edits ([1] [2] [3] [4]) summarized as "avoid ParserFunction error." Everything appeared to be in order, and the "birth based on age as of date" template is valid. Rift (talk) 02:23, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

@Rift: If you look at the versions of the articles before my edits, you'll see a big red error message where the output of the {{birth based on age as of date}} template should appear. I was too lazy to track down exactly where the syntax of the template had gone awry (it may have been caused by this edit to the template), ao I just replaced the template with the relevant years. In any event, those were, I think, the only cases I've ever seen in which the ages, rather than just the birth years, of living persons were specified in the opening sentences of articles. Oh, I see now. An extra "}" inside the calculation template was rendering the error. I've restored the templates with fixes for each. Thanks.
(By the way, using that template for a two year birth date range in the lede is very, very common. Tens of thousands of pages, probably. It's used when a WP:RS states a person's age, but not birth date. I'm surprised you haven't seen it before!) Rift (talk) 18:28, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
  • The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
  • Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
