John Taylor?

Hi Derek, a John Taylor has been added to the "Players earning international caps while at Hull Kingston Rovers" section of the Hull Kingston Rovers article, would you know whether a John Taylor did play for Hull KR, Great Britain, and Yorkshire? If so, what era did he play in? I don't believe anyone of that name played in a Test Match for Great Britain, but tourists to Australia & New Zealand are less well documented. Best Regards. Hello Degsy, good to hear from you. There was a John Taylor who played for Hull KR between 1959 and 1965, and then 1967 and 1969. He made 197 appearances, scoring 48 tries and one goal. He became Rovers' first Australian 'tourist' in the 1961/2 season (when Colin Hutton was the national side's trainer/coach). I have no record as to whether he actually played for GB on that tour, nor indeed any appearances for Yorkshire. Taylor was sold to Castleford for £6,000 in 1965, but re-signed to Hull KR in 1967. Taylor moved on to York in 1969. From memory, his career was somewhat dogged by injury. (In fact, he believe he missed out on playing in the 1964 Challenge Cup Final against Widnes, due to injury). Most of the information comes from my little book, now almost 30 years old, which is extensively cited as a source in Hull KR's Wiki article. I hope that helps a little. A. Sandham

A. Sandham played Hooker for Wales while at Hull Kingston Rovers in the 5-31 defeat to England at The Watersheddings, Oldham on Saturday 20 January 1912, would you have any more details on this player? His forename would be a start! Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 15:03, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

The only 'Sandham' I can find is W. Sandham. Almost certainly the same man though. He was second top try scorer for the Robins in both the 1910/11 and 1911/12 seasons, and played against Broughton Rangers on 11 October 2009. In 1912/13, his 25 tries were a then club record for a forward. Link here to the A. Sandham name. I can not find a mention of him post World War I. According to my trusty book, he played 183 games, scoring 87 tries (261 points) - pretty good for a hooker. But no christian name... sorry.

I found an interesting webpage about him being a "Probable" for the 1910 Great Britain Lions tour of Australia and New Zealand. Well done on the new article. The game was against Broughton Rangers on 11 October 1909, and our William was in a photograph taken before the match, which is in my book. He also appears in another photo for a match against St Helens, dated 2 September 1909 - which suggests the Broughton game was not his debut appearance. However, Sandham does not appear in another photo, taken to commemorate Rovers match against the first touring Australian side in this country, dated 21 November 1908 (which Hull KR won 21-16). Another picture, entitled "Hull Kingston Rovers N.U.F.C. 1912-13" also includes Sandham. I am wondering if he succumbed in World War I - my wife is trying to track this down - but a date of birth would be useful !
Interestingly, vaguely, is that I was at the match when Phil Lowe broke Sandham's try scoring record for a Hull KR forward - even that was a long time ago now ! Phil is now a publican at a hostelry about four miles away from me. It includes memorabilia from his playing days. He's a lovely fella. Cheers,

Looking for someone born in Wales with a birth compatible with a circa-1910 playing era, then according to FreeBMD, the birth of a William Edward Sandham was registered during July→September 1884 in Holywell district, and the birth of a William Sandham was registered during July→September 1887 in Hay district... of course it could be neither of these chaps. Is a Yorkshireman interested in learning more Scots?

Hi, I'm a Master Editor here as well. I've recently taken an interest in Scots WP. Years ago, I was present at a Burns Night where our haggis was Addressed, and I understood very little.
I am embarrassed to say how few active users Scots WP has, and how few are Scotsmen. (My family's originally from the Cotswolds and Brummagem.)

I have seen you repair some of my Linkrot tags here. (Thank you very much for that.)
I have recently introduced that tag to Scots WP, but do not have the manpower to do more than just tag.
Any interest in applying your technique to our shocking degree of rot?
The vast majority of Scots articles are translations from here, so a tagged article in Scots is likely to have (or have had) an untagged article here. (Killing two birds, as it were.)

I don't want to impose on your time, but if you are available at all we could certainly use a helping hand.

Ring any bells? Not a noticeably successful recording career, but interesting now as she was co-host on J. Savile's first TV appearances in 1960. Ummm.... the name does ring a bell, but the information in your stub stirs no real memory for me. To be honest, I can not think of anything I might have, or access to, which would enhance what you already have unearthed. I guess she was a Katie Boyle of the day, never quite reaching the relative heights of Marion Montgomery or Kathy Kirby. Why does Doctor Who keep nagging at me ?? I am away in Cropton this weekend. Well I was not going to say anything, but.... We could not afford the Light Programme - I had to make do with the Heavy one. I do remember Muffin the Mule - nearly got arrested twice. Yes, 16 October 1937 is what I've got. I'd forgotten about the edit war over this fact. Probably so too have those involved - we will see.

Hello. I am not sure why your edit did not work. Did you attempt to delete it from the 'references' section, rather than from within the body of the main article ? I can only suggest you have another go and see what happens.

Reflinks

Hi. I became aware of the Reflinks tool when you used it on a page I'd recently marked for linkrot. So I tried it on The Village Market and only got the deadlinks marked. I see you reapplied it to the same article and got all the bare urls fixed, too. I must have not used it properly. Rest assured I will try it again some time: this seems like a very valuable tool. Hello. Yes, it is a useful and fairly simple tool. Sometimes it does need manual intervention to help it along (I am primarily thinking of PDF files, which it does not seem to like). Do persevere - the bare URLs need all the help they can get ! Regards,

This edit is not really useful: you didn't followed the {{Use mdy dates}} nor did you include the correct titles as in the last reference, nor dates, authors any other information. Huch? You are responsible for your edits! I will cleanup the references later... I'm writing a new one and thus digging out many old references which are useful for other articles, but such edits like the one you did, doesn't help anyone. If you are to lazy to collect some extra information of the website and building a high quality encyclopedia and just playing a WP:MMORPG to gain more edits and rights, then you are simply at the wrong place! mabdul 15:00, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
Equally, you are responsible for your posts. Tell how how an editor of almost seven years standing and nearly 70,000 edits (approximately 15,000+ of which were made via Reflinks), is too lazy and feels the need to up his editing count ? Maybe you are at the wrong place - my talk page.

If 15k of your reflinks edits are similar to this one, then you should stop using reflinks. Being active at Wikipedia for a long time and/or having a high edit count doesn't have anything to do with quality. The example diff above does only show how reflinks shouldn't be used. See these talk as constructive criticism and change your edit behavior. I have seen that you have the autoreviewer right and collected many DYKs, so that I'm even more confused that you do (again: in my opinion) such bad and useless edits with reflinks. I don't want to beat anybody, but I do want build a good encyclopedia. (and I do believe you too!) mabdul 15:38, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Derek. I have recently seen multiple instances of objectionable uses of Reflink by you, starting from Lync article. Remember, Reflink is just a tool and its output is not guaranteed to be perfect. In fact, it is quite to opposite: its generation of |publisher=example.com code is abysmal and its inability to properly handle HTTP redirection is a pain in the – you know where. You or anyone else using it must manually check each of the outputs, add proper |work= and |publisher=, and make sure it continues to support its associate paragraph or sentence. Sometimes, it is better to dismiss Reflinks suggestions and go with a {{dead link}} tag, so that an editor who has enough time can see if he can revive the dead link.

Misapplying template and other stuff

I saw you applied a {{uw-vandalism1}} to User talk:81.178.142.231 for changing genres Status Quo (band) and called the editor a hoary old chestnut. There are many things wrong with that action:

*You imply that the ip is a sock yet you don't tag it as such

  • You edit warred with the ip.

*Calling someone a hoary old chestnut really appears to be a personal attack I think you should know better. Toddst1 (talk) 18:17, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

I think there are things wrong with your action. Firstly, I did not call the editor an "hoary old chestnut" - I was merely referring to the regular mis-editing of the Status Quo article as being such. If you care to look back over the edit history and talk page of the band, going back years, you will see that this 'boogie woogie rock' is not something new - a veritable old chestnut. Secondly, I did not imply that the IP was a sock. You did. Thirdly, reverting someone's edit is hardly engaging in an edit war.
I do know better. Here we have a seemingly inexperienced editor behaving in a manner that suggests otherwise. He has engaged in edit warring, not just on this article, but also posted inappropriately (I will use that term - since you seem to dislike the terminology vandalism) on Rotherham United F.C.. I suggest you go harangue that editor, rather than falsely accusing me. And other stuff.

We collectively spend far too much time bickering with the people who do the actual work around here. The number of those people is falling, remember?
Our problem is admins who do an inadequate job of skewering nuisances and roasting them over slow fires. Admins delight in taking exception to the productive editors, while allowing ne'er-do-wells to run hither and thither unperturbed.
I am tired of seeing a dozen "Final Warnings" on 100% vandalism accounts.
All of our senior editors should be assigned blocking privileges.
And senior editors should be given the benefit of the doubt rather than constantly second-guessed by admins who are no more experienced than they are.

I am somewhat closer to the sheer nonsense of it all, when you mention the Eurovision Song Contest. However, I am rather puzzled how those in Sweden think that resembling "Japanese musicians, characterized by the use of make-up, elaborate hair styles and flamboyant costumes, often, but not always, coupled with androgynous aesthetics", will find favour with the Eurovision audience. Particularly bearing in mind the Oriental connection - not an obvious choice for a vote winner in European circles. I suppose it is vaguely similar to Dana International. We British think Eurovision is a strange joke at the best of times, but if he prevails what do we know. Presumably the song - which I think the contest is meant to be about - is equally bizarre ?

I can not believe that Swedish make-up, elaborate hair styles and flamboyant costumes could ever triumph at Eurovision !

The strange thing is that his performance and song Heartbreak Hotel is a quite normal and just plain average. Just that he dresses strange and have a girlish look. His song is already tipped to do great at Eurovision if it is voted as the winner of Melodifestivalen. Hello Rob. I think my best advice would be to suggest you click on the blue coloured text in the tags at the top of the page. You will find further explanation as what comprise 'primary sources'; how to spot and use 'reliable sources' and, indeed, those that are not reliable; and criteria regarding whether living people are 'notable'. I would hope these editing guidelines give you a better direction as to what is required from a Wikipedia editor. Happy editing,

If you are still interested, I also notice that his musical partner, Alan Blaikley's article also seems to have been edited copiously by 'a source close to' the subject matter. Actually, to be perfectly honest, I do not see either as being particularly promotional. I'll have a similar stab at Blaikley's article, adding references and so forth (somewhat easier now, given the amount of common ground). I am on thin ground regarding their subsequent work, but they wrote great, catchy pop songs back in the day, which I am sadly old enough to remember.

Yes, I'm back, but having not slept for a day and a half, and with the travelling over six time zones, I'm somewhat jet lagged ! Funnily enough, whilst I was away, I received an e-mail from one 'Christine Jones' about Emile Ford. I replied a few hours ago, with the usual suggestions about following Wikipedia editing guidelines. Assuming it is the same person - in my frazzled state I did not fully connect the two events - then I do not appear to have had the desired result. Perhaps you would be so kind as to contact her via e-mail. I am not sure that the first website contains more than a fansite type article - but I could be wrong. It also seems very strange to me that it has taken all this time for 'new information' to emerge about someone, who has been out of the public eye for half a century. I'm not saying it's wrong.... just, odd.
A pretty good time in Mexico thanks, although the weather was somewhat disappointing. Frankly though, I really did not miss the snow ! Cheers,

Yeah - more depressing news, and the hat trick that I predicted (not really, these things always happen in threes) just a couple days ago. You must have finally been persuaded to part with your cash because, according to the contemporary Allmusic review of the album, "most of the tracks share a common structure of a disjointed warm-up jam." Exactly what rock is supposed to be all about, at least in my book. Did I mention that I 'performed' on stage to "Leader of the Pack" astride a Harley-Davidson ? You can tell I've really lived.
To talk some sense, poor old Shadow's article could do with a further clean-up and some references. Ever heard that before ?

Allmusic has an awful habit of veering between balanced, informed and neutral point of view articles (such as those generally written by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Eugene Chadbourne, Jason Ankeny, Craig Harris and Cub Koda, for example) and others who seem to fly away on a flight of indulgent, opinionated fancy. My first LP was this one - which I still possess. My family, all three of us, did not have a record player until I was about 16 years old. I had bought some singles prior to this, and was always amazed, baffled and mesmerised, by the strange coded 'messages' on the record label's. Over the years I have sussed out most of the hieroglyphs - but it really was a different world, rather like Doctor Who !

Sorry, I forgot to include Unterberger in my list - you're absolutely right. Somehow, holding up and reading one of those record labels transported you in to a world of mystery and magic. A porthole to the unreachable. Plus those cryptic vinyl, 'Porky' type messages. Heady days indeed. Last weekend a couple of my dear friends (both Lancastrians, so not that dear), visited maison d'Bullamore. Out came the vinyl; and we were away. In a flight of alcohol fuelled fancy, I stated that "Birds high up in the trees, serenade the flowers with their melodies", and "You've got me never knowing, if I'm coming or going" were my favourite song lyrics. Then I dusted down "Stranger from another planet welcome to our hole, just strap on your guitar and we'll play some rock n' roll.". Silly old timers, eh ?
Before this orgy of silliness we spent a couple of hours at Spurn, and viewed a seal on the beach, less than 20 yards away. Ain't life grand ?

African American vs. African-American

If I remember correclty at one time I was one of the editors who tried to get Category:African-American female singers renamed to Category:Afircan American female singers, but a bunch of people objected. Actually I had forgotten it, but I was the one who back on Aug. 22, 2011 made a prposal seen at this line [4] to rename to Category:African American people and then rename all its subcats to not use a hypen. The proposal was to get rid of the hyphen. What actually happened is that they then turned around and imposed the hyphen everywhere. We now have Category:African-American people but also Category:Native American people. It does not make sense to me, but it makes sense to someone, and attempts to change either of these categories are not likely to make progress.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:11, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Nude Records

Hi,

A user (IP address 46.65.58.76 and previously Dancingqueen100) repeatedly removes references details regarding the collapse of Nude Records falsely claiming every reference to any such detail to be either untrue or can't be trusted. I believe the facts regarding the aftermath of the label and it's affects on it's bands is quite relevant, and if wanted I could research every artist signed to the label adn add details on what happened to them (I'm not going to though). Previous references to the band Lowgold (from archived pages from the bands official website - the site was later redesigned with new content) were also previously removed. I believe Wikipedia is based on references, not people making baseless claims and removing anything that they do not happen to like from an article because it relates to them. Based on what the user removes, I believe the user is the label boss Saul Galpern, who has claimed to know who I am based on my IP address, despite me having no connection with him, the label or any artist signed to Nude.

The same admin who just removes the content, I see. Any reference to anything regarding the collapse of the labe and affects on artists are just reverted - I would also state that Saul Galpern and user Smartarse (or however they spell it) are the only people to remove such info.

I would also point out that it seems strange for an admin to "side" with an anonymous editor whose only edits are to remove content from this article. The text isn't controversial, is referenced and it's removal is only on the basis of it suiting the other user who could actually be just about anyone.

(edit conflict)First of all, just to be clear, although I am an administrator, this doesn't give me any more say than anyone else over the content of articles. 92.8 - you are correct that Wikipedia should be based on references, but they have to be 'reliable' as determined by our policies and guidelines. This and this are both self-published and there is no evidence that the websites have "a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy" like a newspaper has. That's not to say that I think that they are lying, but for us verifiability is more important than the truth. I have searched factiva and google news to see if I can find a better source but they don't seem to exist. As a result, this content doesn't belong in the article. I'm pretty sure a fanzine interview with a band member is "reliable". Based on the criteria you're claiming, I'd imagine about 80% of all references on Wikipedia are not valid therefore making the whole website useless. I think the issue you should be looking at more closely is why a user, who hasn't revealed their identity yet takes on the persona of someone connected to the article in question, is removing the info - which is correct regardless of whether you think the references used are "reliable" (which they are).
