Pimhill

Thank you for your continuing efforts with linkrot.

What references are now needed for Pimhill? I added an inline citation, and slightly changed the election sentence, but the dead references are beyond my ability to figure out how to provide live references.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 16:12, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

There are two or three paragraphs still without citation(s). The dead references may be just that; is there another source out in the ether that would support the election date/process ? If not, on both counts, then the {Refimprove} tag should remain. Regards, - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 19:04, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

Eve Taylor

.. manager of Adam Faith, Sandie Shaw, etc., and regarded as a legendary figure of the 1960s London music scene. Do you have any information on whether she is still alive, or anything about her background? I can find nothing of note - no obituaries or anything. She just seems to have vanished, without anyone commenting on it. Intriguing.... Ghmyrtle (talk) 22:15, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

In a word... no. She must have been somewhat unique being a female manager, in a largely male dominated industry in the late 1950s and 1960s. Probably a cross between Colonel Tom Parker, Don Arden, Brian Epstein, Gordon Mills and Mickie Most; albeit in a dress!
I do recall the name, and the fact that Faith and Shaw, two of my most admired British pop figures of their time, hated her guts. I would guess Taylor was generally not well-liked, and maybe came to a large fall in the late 1960s, when her trail seems to dry up. Perhaps she got married and gave up the day job - I haven't got a clue really. One thing is for sure if Taylor is still alive, she will be c. 100 years old. If her somewhat inadequate Wiki article is to be believed, she was performing on the stage in the 1930s. Also Shaw seemingly commented about Taylor's death in her 1991 autobiography, The World At My Feet. I must have told you before, but I saw dear old Sandie perform with the Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra several years ago - she was still fantastic - although I am somewhat biased.
Taylor gets mentions in several publications, such as here, but again that all covers her involvement in the music industry in the 1960s; nothing more recent.
As well as you are able, are you going to polish up Taylor's article ? Really sorry I can not assist further. Regards,
Derek R Bullamore (talk) 14:16, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
Yes - there's a wonderful description of her in this book. I hadn't previously realised she was in her mid-40s in the mid-60s. I may be tempted to splash out on Sandie Shaw's autobiography myself (£0.01 best used book price on Amazon!) if it gives me any leads. Thanks anyway. Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:38, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
I have been promised an email from a "reliable source" at some point... I'll let you know! Ghmyrtle (talk) 23:02, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
No email, but I do have Sandie's book which gave me some useful hints. (Not all the details, but I have my sources.....). Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:05, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
Oooo - does that mean you may have some more background stuff for Sandie's own article - in due course, of course. Well done on Taylor's article. It is now, at very least, a more rounded, fuller and referenced description of her life and career. Bestest for the season to you and yours, if we do not happen to 'speak' again before Chrimble. @Derek R Bullamore: Meetei and Meitei have different meaning but they describe the same thing. See India and Bharat what is the difference. Awangba Mangang (talk) 03:52, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello Derek,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 18:54, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

I was the one who added the link rot template on 2009–10 Al Ahly SC season primarily because the citation links, like the first one], don't work for me and my browser says "the site took to long to respond", which means to me that the links are dead. I saw that you removed the template, does that mean that the links work for you? —The Editor's Apprentice (TalkEdits) 20:01, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

Hell's bells. My excitement at the, then forthcoming, mid Winter festival thingy must have left me giddy beyond belief. I have revisited the article and expanded those references that do work, and knocked on the head those that do not. Apologies - I should be shot at dawn.

THE NEW ImmortalWizard(chat) 01:10, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Not really. Checking other editor's sources is not a task I regularly perform - not even irregularly for that matter. I do not bother myself with Featured articles and the like. All it really boils down to is a few editors deciding whether something is 'worthy' or not. Good luck to them, but it is not my thing.

Probably not the very best, or most reliable source, now found. However, his article is on the mainframe plus the Deaths in 2019 page has been updated. Feel free to tinker with either, as you see fit. Thanks for all your help - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 20:07, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello Sir, I was just having a beer and looking at the phone and decided to google “ Texas Medal of Valor”, I saw a list of recipients and noticed that my name did not appear. I was awarded the Medal in 1992 as a S/Sgt in the Texas Air National Guard. I have documentation and the actual medal, as proof. I’d appreciate my name being added to the list. I was awarded the USAF Commendation medal and the US National Guard Association “Valley Forge Medal“ for the same act of Heroism. Thanks John B Politz SSG US Army (ret).

Just a thought...

If you were to think about the notability of someone like this, using the same criteria as you use for US musicians, what conclusion would you reach? Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:42, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

I think based on his musical output alone, I would say no... However, assuming his own bio is correct, I think the radio work, magazine and newspaper articles etc., may give the individual enough kudos (as a whole package). One, self released solo album, is small fry though, isn't it ? If you were going to move this forward, I might be inclined to garner whatever bits and bobs are available from non-primary sources on the other stuff, and see how well that hangs. As if I am really the guru on such things ! Does this help ?
Derek R Bullamore (talk) 21:08, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
No, I wouldn't move it forward myself - just interested in your opinion. One solo album... but several in which he was the bandleader. Asking for a friend! Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:12, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, but as a leader of a seemingly non-notable outfit; doesn't cut much mustard either. Speaking as a friend ! - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 21:19, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
Update: Sadly, in Julian's case we're now into obituary territory (no links I can show you, but confirmed on Facebook by his family). I didn't know him well, but certainly saw him perform many times, most recently just a few weeks ago. I'll keep an eye open to see if any obituaries nudge him into notability territory. Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:33, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

How about this one? Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:40, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Is the glass half full or half empty. Pretty borderline, he seems to be more notable for sheer persistence and endurance, than anything really tangible. The Blues Busters bit is more encouraging, although that outfit does not really pass notability on its own. For a man well into his eighties, he seem to have skirted around the edges of notability for a long, long time. Possibly the type of musician that, on his inevitable demise, would inspire someone to produce a stub article, at least. To be honest, I have probably dismissed a few that have stronger claims, and yet created articles for a small number that have no more 'depth' than "The Pearl". Another album in his own name, for example, would have helped, but generally I do feel more positive than I did for the previous one you passed this way. You can gather I am a bit on the fence here ! Asking for a friend again, are we ? For my part the cricket season starts next week, so I am generally winding down my high level, daily, Wikipedia involvement for a while. Regards,

Do I assume you were not very nice before ?!
Anyhow, the best advice I can give you at this late hour is to read Wikipedia:Reliable sources, which is a good starting point for editors. As with here, clicking on any blue-coloured wording there, will lead to another Wikipedia article giving greater depth, guidance or explanation. Posting more specific questions can be made at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. Best wishes, happy editing and, if I can be of any further assistance, please contact me again (I will mainly be away from Wikipedia over the next fortnight or so, so please be patient). Thanks,
Derek R Bullamore (talk) 23:34, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Hmm....

I'm in a quandary over this. I'm sure there's notability in there somewhere, but is it with band A, band B, or the guitarist? Thoughts? Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:16, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

My view is that the guitar player is the best bet. I've never heard of him, but the Hendrix comparisons seem to indicate he could play a bit. Both of the bands careers appear a little bit lightweight to me. Did either of them tour (perhaps as a support act) ? Anyhow, if you go with my suggestion, you would not need too much rewording to make it work. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 10:10, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment in my sandbox. He's going to be a whole lot easier than this guy, for whom useful sources are virtually non-existent! Even this one had an Allmusic bio... although it's probably the most useless, fact-free, one that I've ever seen! Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:18, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Yes, do you think Eugene Chadbourne had been sucking wine gums for too long ?! There is some reason, long buried in my brain, why Mr. Ridley rings a bell with me - despite the fact that the more successful work he undertook was in my fledgling years. In any event, Ridley's stuff was mostly far removed from whatever interested me musically. Hoo hum. I notice you have been churning out articles like billy-o recently; like a new lease of life, or is it the sap rising. Cheers,

More of the same old thing

66.97.20.206 (talk) 19:52, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Done. You could do these yourself. Or, if not, just add a {Linkrot|date=Month Year} tag at the top of the article, and then other interested editors will be aware and can then attempt to correct the bare/incomplete references. (The tag will need a double {{}} to work). In other words, why me - I'm bloody worn out !

Mandolin, too long

Hi Derek,

I just wanted to let you know, I saw your tag on the mandolin article and agree. I have been thinking that for a while now, and even as I am in a writing mood (making it longer), I am considering the best way to split the article into pieces. I imagine I will summarized sections that will be split off into separate articles with links to those articles. My concern as I think about this comes from the talk page "Mandolin has been listed as a level-4 vital article in Art." As a vital article, do you think brevity best or completeness? On one hand I really like everything in one place but I understand the turnoff for someone who just wants the basics. It is like Britannica's Micropedia/Macropedia. Jacqke (talk) 05:11, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

I think, given the potential repercussions of splitting the article up - whilst I feel it necessary - it may be better to get broad consensus from a few different but interested editors. I note you have already placed something on the article's talk page, so anyone can pitch in with ideas and thoughts. Not least of which, because I do share your slight misgivings. Feel free to copy and paste this brief discussion there, if you think that may assist. Here's hoping we get some response(s). Regards,
Derek R Bullamore (talk) 13:16, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
Hello again,

I have asked a few people for feedback, and need to wait to see if any respond. In the meantime I created 2 articles from content that could be trimmed (to be replaced with a brief summary)--History of the mandolin and Mandolins in the United States. That would take about 25kb off the article length. Could that work for now? I am reluctant to trim the international content, because it is one of the few areas where other people add new content. Also I think that content goes with the level 4 designation-- of interest to an international audience. Thanks, Jacqke (talk) 17:24, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

I would also be inclined to wait a little while longer for other editors responses, before undertaking any more splitting of the article. So far, so good. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 14:10, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello D. I hope you are well I don't know if you have the WP:VPT on your watchlist so I wanted you to see this thread Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Template search. Have you edited on wikidata before? If so would you mind fixing the bare url there. I don't want to mess things up through my inexperience. If you haven't I can take a stab at it or maybe we can find an editor there to take care of things. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 18:52, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

Edward Portman

Thank you for your contributions for Edward Portman, but I do not understand why more references are needed. There are three references now from separate sources: an inline citation, a bibliographic referemce and a external link. What more is needed?--Dthomsen8 (talk) 19:46, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Because, in a nutshell, there is only one inline citation. The other two are dead, the external link is precisely that, and I am not sure, nor will any other reader/editor, what precisely the bibliography quoted is actually supporting in the text. It needs more precise inline references to validate what is in the article's text. Regards, - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 19:55, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
I was easily able to convert the external link into another inline citation, but I left the tag in place.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 23:48, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
OK. I think that is the best solution. Thanks, - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 23:57, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

I have removed your BLP tag on the page Vinnie Bell as there is now a sufficient number of sources for the size/content of the article. Ross-c (talk) 07:09, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

OK. I have given the article a little polish too. Thanks, - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 11:25, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Re article 'Fatal dog attacks in England and Wales'

@Derek R Bullamore: Please wait until I'm done with the edits over at Fatal dog attacks in England and Wales. I'm not familiar with how they structure location names in England/UK (I'm from USA), so I know there will be a little cleanup later from someone who knows the local lingo. Someone this morning dumped a bunch of citations of old fatalities onto the page and I'm moving them one by one into the table. The page was originally named for "England and Wales" simply because someone found a report with a death count (limited years, limited to England & Wales). I've co-opted the page to include all UK (if possible). I suppose it will morph over time and might even get a name change (with a redirect page). In the meantime, I'm just adding to the fatalities table. Nomopbs (talk) 16:05, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

OK. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 16:08, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Refill 2

Hello D. If you haven't already seen it Refill switched to a new format on Sunday. I think you'll like it. There is one thing that it took me a couple article to catch - instead of lumping all of the ones that it couldn't format at the bottom of the page it marks them with a red pencil in the body of the fix page. A big benefit is showing where in the article the fixes occur - it makes the hunt to find items that might need tweaking much easier. Cheers and have a pleasant week. MarnetteD|Talk 21:52, 30 June 2019 (UTC)

Hiya MarnetteD. Thanks for the heads up. I have been away for a few days, so only noticed your message an hour or so ago. I will reserve judgement until I have had a few goes with the new version, but it does look better at first glance. Cheers, - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 20:56, 3 July 2019 (UTC)

Why do you control Mitch’s wiki page when you dont know him..? Read Mazz’s twitter she states his name is wrong as are a lot of other issues. To quote she states ‘It’s becoming Fakepedia-getting very annoying/misleading’ i said i’ll help her create a new page that is actually correct as editing yours isn't working.

I do not control any article on Wikipedia, and nor do you. However, I am a very experienced editor, who has learned to follow Wikipedia's editing guidelines and overall mantra. I quote (from WP:V) "In Wikipedia, verifiability means that other people using the encyclopedia can check that the information comes from a reliable source. Wikipedia does not publish original research. Its content is determined by previously published information rather than the beliefs or experiences of editors. Even if you're sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it." Twitter is not a reliable source - simple as that. Conversely, there is a source within Murray's article that states his birth name - it may not be true, but that is not the point. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and relies on established information from sources it trusts. Also, see What Wikipedia is not.

I dont want to control any page - i work full time so dont have time and i really dont care. I hate wiki cos i dont trust it. But when the subjects own daughter is saying its wrong from an official twitter account why is that not acceptable. I trust a related person over data gathered from where ever. But it comes across that you own the page as youre refusing comments. The info is not correct nd therefore not reliable so why can you publish it. I believe Mitch’s daughter over an encyclopaedia. Message from Mazz ‘Please tell the guy to contact me. He is misinformed about my father’s legal name’ her twitter handle is @MazzWoman. She also said ‘It ceased being his name 50’years who. It was changed by deed poll. It is no longer his legal name. Only one he was born with. He is legally Mitch Murray CBE and nothing else’ so where is your reliable source from? Hang on you’ve just said ‘ it may not be true, but that is not the point’ that the whole point about this conversation about things being correct..?!?! Kelseyabbott1991 (talk) 22:41, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

Interesting that you mention "about things being correct", when your previous edits to the article indicated that Mitch Murray was his birth name. Your own comments above state that Lionel Michael Stitcher was "Only one he was born with" ! The article as it now stands is therefore correct. If his name was changed by deed poll, then that should be in the article's wording, but only if a reliable source can be found to verify this. On that very subject, his birth name now has at least two sources within the article. That's the way Wikipedia operates, as I quoted earlier. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 11:06, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

Only one he was born with is his daughters words if you bothered to read properly. You just make it up as you go along Kelseyabbott1991 (talk) 17:28, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

And you seem to revel in degrading another editor's efforts. You are no longer welcome on this page. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 12:28, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

Dominic Grieve reference

Hi, I saw a reference to the Independent website without a title so I added the title from the website "MPs hoping to stop no-deal Brexit suffer further blow as Bercow blocks Commons showdown". You have used Refill to change it to "MPs’ hopes of stopping a no-deal Brexit suffer further blow as Bercow blocks Commons showdown". Is this correct? Although the second version reads better, Template:Cite_web#Title describes "Title" as "The title of the source page on the website; will display with quotation marks added. Usually found at the top of your web browser." TSventon (talk) 09:45, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

I have no idea why Refill 'choose' an alternative title - that seems very odd to me. Please feel free to insert the 'correct' title, as you rightly pointed out. Best wishes - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 09:52, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for confirming that the edit was automatic, I will leave it. Presumably Refill used a hidden version of the title on the Independent website, so this kind of discrepancy will occur from time to time. TSventon (talk) 10:19, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
