RenRen070193 (talk) 13:51, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

RenRen070193 Why would I give you an explanation? Shouldn't you be the on explaining on why it is really necessary to change the template? Also, speak english. Engr. Smitty Werben 16:11, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

Hello! I'm sorry for my late reply. Btw, if it's a different template, it's changed to other details, I hope I'll do the same in case you don't grant my proposal. Please give consideration to my new proposals so that the readers can better understand them. RenRen070193 (talk) 01:05, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

PBA team

Hi, you seem to edit PBA articles somewhat. I noticed 1988 Alaska Milkmen season was recently renamed, which seems to be correct and matches the sources. But some of the other seasons are still at the other name. It looks like some of them should be moved too, if you want to look into it. MB 03:00, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Per this source, the team supposedly changed names for the 1990 season only. This is supported by the use of the "Air Force" nickname in 1990 PBA season. For the 1989 season, after checking newspaper sources about the season, I could confirm that the team were still using the "Milkmen" nickname. I have moved the season article (i.e. 1989 Alaska Air Force season) to the proper name. Engr. Smitty Werben 03:31, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi there. I have reverted at least one of your moves of "Olympians". In general, please do not move articles based on usage/capitalisation by Olympedia (or related databases) alone without discussion, especially for early Olympians, as it often diverges from usage in the majority other sources, particularly contemporary ones, and has been found to be less reliable than we would like for this era. Sorry about that. That template works the opposite way of all the citation templates that use first and last name fields. I'll try not to do more like that. Dicklyon (talk) 20:22, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

@Dicklyon That's because that template shows the names in their actual naming order (given name then surname). In some templates though, like Template:Rain or Shine Elasto Painters roster, the surname is shown first, so the Jr. is included in the given name (Steve Jr.), instead of the surname (not Taylor Jr.), which is the proper way per WP:JR. Engr. Smitty Werben 20:47, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

living parameter

Just a heads up, if you add the living=yes parameter (or living=no) to just the banner shell then it will still show up on Category:Biography articles without living parameter, which looks for the WikiProject Biography's living parameter specifically. You'd think that using one would override the need for the other but unfortunately that's not how it works. - Aoidh (talk) 20:53, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

@Aoidh I know that, just didn't notice that the living= parameter of the WP Biography template wasn't checked (when I edited it using the Rater tool). Thanks for the notice though. Engr. Smitty Werben 21:18, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Dieter Lloyd Wexler,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Early end of the backlog drive

A few days ago, new page patrollers got the backlog to zero. Due to the unprecedented success of the backlog drive, it will be ending early—at the end of 24 October, or in approximately two hours.

Barnstars will be awarded as soon as the coords can tally the results. Streak awards will be allocated based on the first three weeks of the drive, with the last three days being counted as part of week three.

Change on F1 constructors’ records reverted

Hi, I saw you reverted a change I made to the List of Formula One constructor records page. No problem, of course, but I’d like to know: did I make a mistake in my change? Of is there an other problem with it? I hope to learn! Thanks! Lustigson (talk) 20:55, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

@Lustigson What we do for "Highest percentage of stat per season" is that we only add that record once it is assured that that entry would not be removed again from the table for the current year. 16/20 of Red Bull this season is Top 10 right now for the percentages, sure. But let's say they won't win the next 2 races. So their final record is now 16/22, which is 72.7% and is not top 10 anymore. If we add Red Bull's current percentage right now, which is not assured to be top 10 after the season, does that mean we should also add in the future those teams that would win the first race of the season? Surely 100% is the best record possible, but would it make sense to add it? Of course the record for that is 100%; it's the first race of the season. Because of these, we only add entries in the table if they are assured to stand, i.e. even if they lose all the remaining races of the season, the percentage is still top 10. Engr. Smitty Werben 21:45, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Ah, right. I get it. No problem, then. Thanks again! Lustigson (talk) 07:25, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Sam Lowes

This is En wikipedia and if English speakers want to know about Sam Lowes' current condition they do not want to trawl down through the history to find it. The lede is supposed to be a summary of the article content. The most important aspects should be near to the start. You should therefore think about the consequences of moving content entirely into section.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 14:50, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

ITN recognition for 2022 MotoGP World Championship

On 7 November 2022, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article 2022 MotoGP World Championship, which you updated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. Stephen 23:57, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

Editing an article without validation.

Please try to research first instead of just following your opinion before editing an article. Aileen.n.dc (talk) 18:00, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

@Aileen.n.dc You don't even add your sources. Also, it's not practice to add "5th overall in assists" or "7th overall in games played" and the likes. Engr. Smitty Werben 18:50, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Practice is different from facts. Again, the category is about "Career Highlights" and not just rewards. We are talking about PBA "History" and not just a regular season. In this case, you are just using your opinion to edit. Is there a rule about this? If so, then maybe other biodata should also be revised. Otherwise, you are being biased.

Secondly, I will try to study how to edit and put references. But the supporting articles are available online. It's just that I am having a hard time figuring out how to link coz Im still new here. Aileen.n.dc (talk) 18:56, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

@Aileen.n.dc Steve Nash is 4th in the assists list but this info isn't included in his infobox. Why should we then show the "4th in assist list" in Cabagnot's page? This is a matter of consistency.
Also, you said it yourself: you have a lot of things to learn. GUIDELINES would help. Engr. Smitty Werben 19:10, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
@Aileen.n.dc Also, do you personally know Alex Cabagnot? Engr. Smitty Werben 19:13, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

NO! This is my first entry. I feel upset coz you keep on removing my edits instead of just helping me. Im not a professional editor. I dont do this for points or whatever. I was hoping that senior editors here would help especially in linking references coz its available online. I just dont know how to link it.

Also, I kinda think that action photo is better w/c is why I tried to create my own and uploaded here. But you deleted instead of just helping.

Im thankful that @BotMultiChillT helped me in putting the structured data source. So now I know what to do.

In your case, it seems to me that you are just editing for the sake of earning points. Even acccusing me of conflict of interest but I think it's the other way around. So are you getting something from this? Because, I AM NOT and never my intention. You can get all the points.

You are just discouraging a newbie here. Aileen.n.dc (talk) 20:12, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

@Aileen.n.dc When I sent you a welcome message, there are already links of the tutorials, the help pages, and the manuals of style. There is no need to babysit you here. If you really want to learn, you should do it yourself. I already linked the important articles to you. All you need is to read them, one by one (if you really want to learn, that is). Engr. Smitty Werben 21:36, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
@Aileen.n.dc Also, you said you don't know Cabagnot personally. Then what did you mean with this? How could he himself requested it? With what you said, I could interpret that Cabagnot requested you to upload those images for him, but I'd wait for your explanation. Engr. Smitty Werben 22:17, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Again that is your interpretetation. A true researcher validates and use direct sources. This doesnt mean that I know him personally but it could also mean that I did my job as a true researcher who validates and use direct source. I dont rely on personal opinion or just an article uploaded online because those can also be "subjective" opinions. Nielsen and TNS do this kind of qualitative research. I studied masters and our professors taught us how to do research and actually interview to create own source. Aileen.n.dc (talk) 22:31, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

@Aileen.n.dc Then that would be under WP:OR, which is not allowed. Engr. Smitty Werben 23:14, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

oh okay. maybe that's the reason why wikipedia is not acceptable as Thesis reference. Well, our professors didnt allow. Anyway, Im learning a lot from you. Thank you for enlightening me. This is not my place then. I will stop from here. Thanks again! Aileen.n.dc (talk) 23:21, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Engr. Smitty,

Through an RFC done at the Village Pump a few years ago, it was decided that draftifying articles is only appropriate for "recently created" articles. This is generally considered to be articles that were created up to 3-6 months ago. So, please do not move articles to Draft space that are older than 6 months, especially ones that have existed on the project for years now. If you think an article is unsuitable, you can either work on improving it or use one of Wikipedia's processes of deletion.

Thank you for all of your contributions! Liz Read! Talk! 01:59, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
