Elma Electronic webpage

I noticed you tagged this w/ a notability concern. I added more info with links.

Let me know if you think it works (I checked other company articles and I think mine should be OK) Should have more links soon.

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 02:57, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Strangeloop Networks deletion

Hi, Discospinster, I've made some changes to the article (User:Mbenna/Strangeloop_Networks) which hopefully satisfy the basic requirements. Could you please have a look and then re-instate it if you are satisfied? Thank you.

Mbenna (talk) 03:38, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Your changes look great. Thanks for making them. Go ahead and re-instate the page. Mike Mbenna (talk) 21:33, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

IP harasser

Hi, I don't know if you are familiar with this IP vandal, but various incarnations of it have been repeatedly harassing User:AgnosticPreachersKid and other editors. I went ahead and semi-protected APK's talk page for a week as he's the main target, and if you look at the histories of his talk page and userpage, you can see how persistent the vandal is. I think if the vandal is active anymore tonight, a quick block is in order. Aleta Sing 01:13, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

He is very persistent, making small but annoying changes over and over and over again until prevented with a block and/or page protection. The latter has often proved necessary because he'll return quickly with a new IP. I think they are always in the 142.162 range. Aleta Sing 01:21, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
I've started 2 conversations (two weeks ago and another earlier this week) at ANI about this IP. I asked if someone could range block the IP, at least for a short time. I didn't get a response. Do you know how to do it or if it's allowed in this case? He's vandalized my user/talk pages over 50 times, as well as other user pages. APK yada yada 02:06, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of the SKA band The Steadys

The addition does meet your requirements. The bass player from The Steadys (Ani Schempfe a.k.a. DJ On-E) joined the pop group Dee-Lite in 1993 after The Steadys broke up. This fits with you requirements if I'm not mistaken. The Steadys are also on a live album called NYC SKA LIVE which was released in 1990, so there is physical proof (Recorded media) and this I believe also fits your requirements. Thank you!

Flaming Doctor Pepper

Hello. As you noted, the trademark is Dr Pepper (no period). Therefore, a Flaming Dr Pepper is an incorrect use of a trademarked brand name. It should correctly be Flaming Dr. Pepper (with a period) to indicate that the flaming version is, in fact, not the same thing (but something similar to) the trademarked brand. The only drinks that should omit the period are drinks that actually include honest-to-goodness Dr Pepper in them. Taste-alikes should include the period.

This was actually a consensus decision reached by Mixed Drinks Wikiproject members back in early 2007. It is even used as a specific example (5.2.1) in the "Policies specific to the List of cocktails" (which are more accurately "guidelines", but I didn't understand the distinction back when I first started that section).

None of this is to say that things couldn't be changed again and switched back the other way around. I have no intention of changing the new status quo, but I wanted you to know that there was historical discussion about the way things were prior to your recent change. Have a good day! --Willscrlt (Talk) 21:18, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi again. I can easily see both sides of the argument. That's why I said I wasn't going to change it. Personally, I think that Flaming Dr. Pepper is the better way to go, even though it has its problems, too. Whichever way it ends up, I think that both talk pages (the article and the redirect) should have a notation included right near the top of the page that explains the reasoning behind the current name, and then point people to the Policies specific to the List of cocktails (updating the guidelines if necessary to reflect the change in preference). One other bit of historical information is that it was generally preferred to avoid trademark names in drinks (use "coffee flavored liqueur" instead of "Kahlua") unless a specific brand was critical to the flavor of the drink or was listed in historical sources as the alcohol of choice. Thus, using Dr. Pepper instead of Dr Pepper meets that guideline, too, though it's really just a big gray area. WP:MIX is not nearly as active as it was, but the many thousand of edits the other Project members and I made back in early 2007 has had a carry over effect to the current articles, for which I am really quite proud. It's also why I keep those pages in my watchlist.
You know, maybe the better option would be to do as I did in this topic subject... avoid the issue entirely by redirecting BOTH Flaming Dr Pepper and Flaming Dr. Pepper to Flaming Doctor Pepper. That is even farther away from the trademark, yet is instantly readable and comprehensible for what it is. Still include a note at the top of each talk page, but that might be the best solution of all. What do you think? --Willscrlt (Talk) 22:14, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I think sometimes that Wikipedia influences Google results almost as much as Google influences Wikipedia information. :-) As a simple choice between Dr and Dr., I agree that Dr. would be the better choice given the wide disparity between the two numbers. So, it's time to look at Dr. vs. Doctor. Here is how I interpret WP:NAME in this case:

  • Use common names of persons and things - This would indicate that the high Google hits on Dr. wins
  • Prefer spelled-out phrases to abbreviations - Clearly favors Doctor
  • Controversial names - Not exactly applicable, but would seem to indicate that we should "go with the flow" on the Dr v. Dr. debate and allow Dr. to be the name for the article in a choice between just those two choices
  • Use standard English for titles even if trademarks encourage otherwise - Definitely indicates that we should avoid Dr, but does it make the case for Doctor (that's how it's actually pronounced) or Dr. which is how it's often typed?

Looking at WP:NCP, I find an especially appropriate rule:

  • Qualifiers not between brackets states that «If a qualifier is used in the title of a page where the content is, it is never abbreviated (apart from Jr./Sr. as described above), so: "Saint", not "St." nor "St". Also here, for redirect pages there is no problem to use an abbreviated form, example: Dr. Livingstone is a viable redirect to the David Livingstone article» - This would strongly favor Doctor over Dr. with Dr. (and probably also Dr) redirecting to Flaming Doctor Pepper

So, there you have it. My recommendation, based strictly on the naming guidelines and your Google searching, would be to name the article itself Flaming Doctor Pepper. Flaming Dr. Pepper would be the next best alternative, but would probably make a better redirect. Flaming Dr Pepper should definitely be a redirect under any circumstance. Whatever we decide, I think we should archive this conversation in the talk page of the final article to help avoid people repeatedly having to go through this thought process. :-) What do you think of all this? --Willscrlt (Talk) 01:03, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Creation timestamp on an article you CSD'ed

Hi, you recently CSD#G4 an article, as follows: Deletion log); 19:52 . . Discospinster (Talk | contribs) deleted "List of Minor characters in My Gym PArtner's a Monkey" (db-repost|Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of minor characters in My Gym Partner's A Monkley). I was wondering if you can get the creation timestamp of that article? It's gone now, so I can't see it. I have a hunch about something. Thanks! Yngvarr (c) 00:13, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your speedy reply! I do have another question. The new user account log says that (User creation log); 18:52 . . ChillingPenguin (Talk | contribs) New user account, but the timestamp for the article in question is 18:19, which is earlier than the user account creation. Do you know why the discrepancy? Yngvarr (c) 00:19, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
No, I am in Eastern Time, which would add an hour to what you are seeing, so I think you're correct about the timezones. But again, thank you for your time. Yngvarr (c) 00:30, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

please reconsider and reinstate page on MAPI

Hello: I posted a short article on Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI, originally a cooperative of business unions and companies who organized themselves in the US depression in the 1930s. The article was flagged for being to much a puff piece and I amended and shortened it so it would be less company centric. I believe the second version passed muster. I was asked to change my login name which I have done. I would like to post the second version of the page but I don't have access to it? Is it lost forever and do i have to start the process over again using this login name? I want to add that what prompted this posting on Wikipedia is that Microsoft has developed software that uses the acronym MAPI and we get lost in the google blizzard. Our hope is that those seeking an explanation of MAPI online will also find information about our organization now in its 75th year not just descriptions of Microsoft software.

Removing tags from articles without fixing the reason that article was tagged amounts to vandalism. Please join this discussion: Wikipedia:Wikiquette_alerts#User:Thomasalazar

Yes, you can help by going to the case folder and doing one of the "user compares" by finding the same edits from two or more different users. Thanks for you help. ~ WikiDon (talk) 21:34, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I had already seen all of that WE material. It will need to be added and formated in the case file. Please do so. The main (first) user name (that I have detected) is Diamond Joe Quimby, so format from that basis. How you got a WE from DJQ after calling one on T(S)A out of nowhere. This was no coincidence/accident. It is apparent that he has created many user names and used IP edits to evade being banned. Thank you and carry on. ~ WikiDon (talk) 23:18, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

American Coed Pageants

The American Coed Pageants page was deleted by you for "blatant advertising." I disagree. I would like to refer you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_America , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_usa

The American Coed Pageant page is description and history of the pageant and not an advertisement. It is a reference article for a 25 year old scholarship program that has had helped many contestants to prepare for and compete in the organizations listed above.

American Coed has had hundreds of thousands contestants in the last 25 years and has affected the lives of all of these young women. I believe that American Coed has earned its place as a true piece of Americana.

I believe that an American Coed Article is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia.

I respectfully ask that you reinstate the American Coed Pageant page. I will make any changes that you deem necessary.

Magillem page deletion

Following comment was posted on Spiesr talk page. I post it here per Spiesr suggestion since you deleted the article.

Hello, Magillem page I created was deleted straightforward without any chance to add deeper content. Why?

  • As you can see in IP-XACT, 2 companies out of 15 don't have their page despite they are contributing members of the standard.
  • I expected other people working in Academic Institutions or big companies from the semiconductor industry to let some interesting data
  • Besides their commercial product, they have several non-profit partnerships and programs: R&D Programs, Academic Programs, European Projects. They are steering contributing member of The SPIRIT Consortium.
  • Their core platform is given almost for free. Customers are only paying for services building custom business layers on the top of their core platform. I don't know lot of companies "giving" their core technology.
  • I reviewed your notes.
About copyright: I built the mock-up page with information found on the web, including their web-site. The information I took should not have any impact on any business since they target non-profit programs, or disclosed partnerships and papers. Hence I don't anticipate any copyright issues.
About notability: I linked in "references" section some 3rd parties reference as mentioned in guidelines to bring some evidence about the notability: The SPIRIT Consortium standardizing IP-XACT, and references about articles jointly written and co-signed with huge companies from the market. Once again, 2 companies out of 15 don't have any page in IP-XACT: this flaw should be reverted because people should know about all companies mentioned. BTW all companies have a section presenting their product: this section is obvious.
About authoring: I'm not supposed to be the author of the article, since WikiPedia is supposed to be a collaborative environment where everybody enhance the articles per their knowledge. I don't want to be the author, I just want to open the thread and give the opportunity of everybody to improve it in order to converge toward a good article. I don't really see the point to work it out in so much details as if it's written in the stone forever since it MUST evolve as soon as it is recorded.
To conclude, I don't see what I could do much for this article. People have to know about this company and MUST improve it on their own, which is wikipedia purpose. The article sticks to WikiPedia guidelines and business presentation per wikipedia criteria mentioned in the rules to create a new business article.

The Steadys

Just trying again. Please let me know if you need more. Thanks!

Rgainfort (talk) 20:04, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Submission:

The Steadys - New York City ska band c.1989-1991 (2-Tone style). Most notable contribution was their recordings on the Moon Records LP release "NYC SKA LIVE", at the Cat Club in the winter of 1990. The film, of the same name, was never produced due to violent outbreaks, caused by local skinheads, at the venues where the filming was taking place. The last incident, which caused the cancellation of the production, occurred at a N.Y. Citizens show at CBGB's. Skinheads attacked one of the cameramen resulting in the destruction of production equipment. The film was meant to be a sequel to the cult favorite Dance Craze. The Steadys' bass player, Ani Schempfe (a.k.a. DJ On-E), went on to join the pop group Dee-lite in 1993 and multiple solo projects after the band's demise in 1991.

Saw your note. Did I use the wrong speedy template? Apologies if I did, I thought I chose the right one. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 14:10, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
