Discospinster,

I am an avid fan along with many others that have begun to work for free in this organization called EyeLAshout, I have found out that you/wikipedia have deleted EyeLAshout along with various members of the entertainment group, though not completely famous, are worthy of some recognition. Including Kevin McPherson who has a notable position as bass player in Ghost of the Robot, emily osment band and demi lovato to anme a few, performing on both recent jonas brothers tours and also Charlie De Mars one of the founders of EyeLAshout and various musical groups. EyeLAshout is a member of ASCAP, is a label partner with iTunes and amazon and has worked as a production design firm for many national commercial adds including the first ever bi lingual super bowl ad in 2006. I have an opportunity to provide complete profiles with exact facts on all the information on EyeLAshout, it's artists, film and musical projects and want to know the best way to not upset the wikipedia monitors or waste both our time. Greg Hampton

Hi, I just created a new page re: music producer/musician Greg Hampton (which was deleted a few years back).

As of now, it's being listed as "Greg hampton" (note the lower case h at the beginning of his name). How can I get it changed to an upper case H?

You would use the move function to correct the spelling. Hover over the down-pointing arrow at the top of the page, and chose "move". Then type in the correct capitalization, and add a short explanation in the text box. Then click "Move page". In that case you should make it clear in the article that the reviews are located there, otherwise the link might be removed because it points to a commercial vendor. Obama Bin Laden

Hi! 1. There's already a redirects for discussion going on at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2011_May_2#Obama_bin_Laden 2. acara deletion

Acara is pretty well known... member Jacob Isim was in High Times, featured on the tonight show, and has been cited by the Amarillo Globe News, Channels 3, 7, 10, 27, and 33 many times on air, facebook, and websites. I've got articles talking about them on the examiner.com today (which was blacklisted?) so when I was looking for other ways to cite the group I was suprised it got deleted. Can you put it back or maybe help me make a suitable page for their cause? They walk a thin line protecting freedom of speech and religion without treading on others rights.

If you are familiar with the Quran burning Terry Jones you may know that he's coming to Amarillo and showing down with none other than ACARA this Mother's Day. Their KKK rally intends on sending an anti-Islam message internationally and will get more people killed than the last time since Bin Laden was just assassinated... last time a couple of UN Peace keeping women were beheaded and a dozen more UN Peace Keepers were killed when the extremists responded to the Quran burning. The tension in the middle east is palpable which is only kicking Terry Jones and David Grisham (Repent Amarillo) into high gear.

Like I said the people ACARA are opposing want to start a war and will cost many people their lives for the sake of their own grandstanding. ACARA is well documented. ACARA is well known. And ACARA needs all the help it can get to help bury the anti-Islamic messages under the GOOD efforts of American citizens or the radical Moslems will say this is what all American's are like.

The best way to proceed would be to start the article in your name space (User:Willis4play/ACARA) so it won't get deleted. Please look at WP:YFA to get an idea of what an article should and should not contain. Keep in mind that Wikipedia is not here to advance any particular ideals, no matter how noble they might be. I understand and thank you your quick response. The cause is noble yet I am being fair... It's hard to not go on about how bad the Repent Amarillo folks are and to always take the high road but I have done like you suggested. There are a ton of citations I'm finding online that are acceptable except for some youtube (video proof) and examiner.com articles (not spam pieces). Would you be able to white list them if I added them. She is the co-founder of the personal genomics program 23andme based from Mountain View, CA. The page was created almost three years ago, and it didn't indicate how she was notable by Wikipedia's criteria. If it hadn't been deleted it could have probably been made into a redirect to the company name, but it wasn't enough at the time. ... discospinster talk 16:40, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Environment-related papers being posted to Wikipedia

I noticed you recently PRODed Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood and Eco-localisation. I've also identified another similar article created today, Command and control regulation, which I started an AfD discussion about. Given these comments by the latter article's author, I believe these articles and others were written as part of a misguided school project that encouraged students to post urban-environmental essays on Wikipedia which were mostly made up of original research and synthesis. Not sure if there's anything that can be done about identifying the rest, but I thought I would alert an administrator. Singularity42 (talk) 03:58, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I've noticed as well the slew of eco-essays being posted. I feel bad about trying to get rid of them because they're obviously well-written and a lot of work has been put into formatting them... on the other hand, Wikipedia is not SSRN. I'm wondering if the answer might be to move them into the authors' userspace, suggest that it needs to be re-written as an encylopediac article rather than an essay or term paper (which for some of the topics, may be impossible), and see if the teacher behind it would be willing to make an account and be referred to WP:SUP? I tried to start a dialogue with one of the authors here, but I'm not sure if there will be any answers. Perhaps it should be raised at WP:Articles for deletion/Command and control regulation? UCSD Kubiak "chinaman" issue BLP recreations

Hello,

Thanks for staying on top of this article!

I have absolutely no involvement in this issue other than having seen it vanishing and re-appearing in the CSD queue, and having tagged the latest incarnation for G10, but the repeated attempts to recreate this article or to introduce the content in different ways (Clifford Kubiak, Clifford Kubiak's Lab Rules) does have the odor of a personal attack, particularly given that the text claims that Kubiak added the offensive content himself, which none of the sources claim. The contribution histories of the users involved also suggest that they may not be entirely unconnected with each other.

Is there any action you might be able to take to prevent recreation? As a non-admin I'm not clear on whether this would be an appropriate situation for salting, or if a "delete" AfD is usually needed for that (though it looks like there will be one of those too soon enough).

Nowhere did he "admit" that he wrote the offending list. He only said that it existed and that he accepts responsibility as the supervisor. There is no evidence anywhere that he did in fact write the racist comment. In an American or Canadian court of law, this would be what is known as "reasonable doubt". you can say he did not personally write it, but he as the leader of the department, were not aware of the page in the barely 3-4 pages of the lab site? He as the leader, will have to take that responsibility and face the result. At least, this is about the event, this event happened, and is important to big group of people, there is no reason to deleted it entirely, you may request to modify it, say there is no direct evidence that the guy wrote it, so the words should be appropriate. Wikipedia's biography of living persons policy states: "If the entire page is substantially of poor quality, primarily containing contentious material that is unsourced or poorly sourced, then it may be necessary to delete the entire page as an initial step, followed by discussion." There was nothing in the first two versions of the article that would be useful to save. It would have to be recreated from the ground up, which it was, and I did not delete that particular article.
You say "this is about the [...] truth, not something about 'biography of living persons'". I respectfully disagree. Per Wikipedia's verifiability policy: "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth — whether readers can check that material in Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether editors think it is true."

HireClix

Hi Discospinster, I was wondering why you had deleated my "HireClix" page. It would be great if you could let me know what the differance is between the page that I created for HireClix and that of a similar company, Benerard Hodes Group, that is one of our competitors? I really would like to get HireClix up here so that people get reference wikipedia if they are looking for background on our company. I had sources for everything that I had written and I just wanted to know where I was striking out. Some of the sources were even really industry specific preiodicals, etc. I looked at all of the material that you have on wikipedia about writing articles and I didn't know what in my article violated your policy. There were a couple of reasons it was deleted. One is that it was written in a very promotional manner. For example, "The company provides serivices to help corporate recruiting teams, staffing firms, and other businesses get results by delivering customized recruitment marketing campaigns, leveraging search engine optimization, pay-per-click recruiting, targeted interactive advertising, email marketing and social media." That's something that would be found in a press release, not an encyclopedia, which is supposed to be neutral. Secondly it did not specify how the company is notable by Wikipedia's criteria. The sources given were either from the company's own web page, a press release, or an article that mentioned the company in passing. The Bernard Hodes Group article has been nominated for deletion for basically the same reasons. I would suggest that if you want to work on the article without fear of it being deleted, you should start it in your user space at User:Abrosch/HireClix. ... discospinster talk 15:38, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

I believe there is screen shot and the guy and the college apologized for some extend, which means he admitted. But you still insist there is no evidence? Even real police or judge won't act that way. I doubt your neutral position as a wiki user.

I'm surprised that you don't think the article is promotional. It has three paragraphs, one of which is "Vallum publishes poetry that is sharp, engaging and exciting. It pushes boundaries and invites the exploration of different worlds and perspectives. In addition to the poetic contributions are essays, interviews, book reviews and stimulating visual art." Thanks for pointing out the copyvio. It's gone. As for promotion--I didn't think it was entirely promotional, and with a decent (not "fundamental") rewrite it could have looked like a real article (not that I think it was a notable magazine at all--I found no proof of that).     • I had already deleted it for that very reason. :-) Generally, my rule of thumb is, if the text looks more like it comes from a sales brochure than an encyclopedia, it's promotional. According to WP:ATHLETE, a notable footballer has to have played for "any officially sanctioned senior international competition". The article doesn't even specify whether he played for the national team, only that he was selected. Akagami: Otokotachi ha kôshite senjô he okurareta page

I noticed that my page regarding this book is tagged for deletion and I am confused to why. This book was groundbreaking in Japan, as there was little material published about akagami, call-up papers. This book focuses on a man Debun Shigenobu, who is essential to the author's research, as if it weren't for him disobeying direct orders to incinerate all documents pertaining to the Japanese Military, there would be no documents regarding how the Japanese Military drafted gained information on and drafted people. Debun Shigenobu has been mentioned in other titles, including Japan At War: An Oral History by Theodore and Haruko Cook (used at Universities). Please tell me why this would not meet the requirements?

RE: Akagami

This book is the only book that actually exposes primary military documents dealing with akagami. The man who saved these documents is quoted through verifiable source. Look up "Debun Shigenobu" in Japan at War: An Oral History. Akagami is even cited on a Japenese wiki page, as this book is a one of a kind for this information, or can't you read Japanese? Which may be the reason you are not finding any sources. If you need help with this, I would be willing. I know that it's mentioned on the Japanese Wikipedia page, but wiki sites are not reliable sources. I looked up the Japanese version of the title and author on Google and was not able to find reliable, third-party sources that significantly discuss the book. I found some blogs and some booksellers. Marking as Patrolled

Hello there Discospinster. Just a little request. It seems that Twinkle, quite annoyingly, doesn't mark pages as patrolled even when you tag them for WP:CSD, WP:PROD or WP:AFD. I've just come across an article, Austin wells that you'd tagged for WP:CSD on the unpatrolled list. I'm sure you already know, but if you scroll down to the bottom of the article, there will be a little link in square brackets that says mark this page as patrolled. If you click that the it'll get taken off the unpatrolled list and no-one else will come across it. It's not your fault, I know; it's Twinkle's. But until they fix it, it'd be great if you clicked that link just before you tagged an article. I've marked that one as patrolled. Sorry to be a pain. CSD A7 was not applicable to this article. The subject of the article was the regeneration of Salford Quays and/or a PhD thesis about that subject (A7 specifically says that it does not apply to books, and I would have thought that a thesis was a book for this purpose). The procedure for adding references can be found at WP:CITE. Basically you would put the reference between these tags: <ref>Reference goes here</ref>. For a Wikipedia article, the information has to be more than just true and verified. It has to show how the subject is notable by Wikipedia's criteria. So there has to be coverage of the company in other sources such as newspapers or magazines, but I didn't find anything like that when I searched your company on Google. The Chemistry of Large Metal Cluster Ions of the Type M(I)8M(II)6L12X -- A Review

I need help starting a draft of a review of an area of chemistry which I was heavily involved with during my career. In the year 2007 I presented an invited paper at an international meeting of chemists in Lima Peru, and the substance of that review is what I want to present here (what was placed on my user sub-page was a DRAFT; it was never actually published as far as I know). The review cites an interesting area of inorganic chemistry that may have biomedical applications, and it is worthy of a review. The material is referenced to the appropriate primary scientific literature.

I could supply text that is internally hyperlinked.

How could there be copyright violations? The figures were my own creations in the first place (!), and they are found in the primary literature citations. The article that you saw on that webpage is a draft, which I left with the symposium coordinator while I was in Lima Peru to present the paper. Apparently, he didn't do anything with it.

So I placed a draft of the review on a Wilipedia user subpage (of my own, Jrwright72626), and it was removed for "copyright infringement." Was it because you thought it was a paper that the Peruvian Chemical Society actually published? Or was it removed because of the figures? I was the originating author of the eleven figures selected for the review (or maybe I should use the word "overview") -- I actually drew them for some of those journal submissions cited in the primary literature. And I was either the primary PI or the research program director in charge (depending on the time frame) who was receiving National Institutes of Health funding to do the reported research. You should note that I almost always put my name last in the scientific papers that I published; my students were first.

What am I missing here? Insofar as I can tell, the Peruvian Chemical Society never published the material. Years after the meeting the contact in Lima did not have the courtesy to answer my letters one way or the other, and I can't think of any other instance in my career where a reprint of a symposium presentation was not sent to an author. I have to believe that the work was never published. So how could there be a copyright violation? I could strike most of the figures (though some were never published anywhere), but that would make the review less interesting.

As a side note, I detected quite a bit of hostility toward Americans at the Lima meeting. A Peruvian scientist who lived in the United States until he retired, one who knew of my work, got me on the invited list and even insisted on paying my travel to and from Lima. I know that the attitude that I ran into disappointed him (he witnessed it), because he was trying to encourage a spirit of international cooperation. My own attempts at diplomacy were futile.

Hello Prof. Wright. If the text and figures that were in the Wikipedia article were your own (whether or not it's been published elsewhere), you own the copyright and you would have to give Wikipedia specific permission to use them. Wikipedia licenses all of its text under the Creative Commons license (attribution, share-alike), which means that anything in the article can then be used by anyone else. So you would have to license your academic article under the same copyright license so that Wikipedia could use it. It's all explained here, along with the procedure for giving persmission: Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
However, even if you do that, the article would probably still be deleted because it's original research and synthesis of ideas, which is not suitable for Wikipedia. It could be useful for a sister project such as Wikisource (http://en.wikisource.org). It could be suitable for an open access academic repository such as SSRN-type site for hard science (perhaps arXiv or CiteSeerX, although I'm afraid I'm not familiar with your subject matter, so you should probably ask your academic librarian).

Eyecon

Hi Discospinster

You recently deleted a page I created for the Australian Roleplaying convention 'Eyecon' citing that it did not indicate the importance or significance of the subject. I should have made it clearer that Eyecon is the largest roleplaying convention in Sydney and is the second largest in Australia (only Arcanacon is larger). It is also soon to be the home of the Australian Munchkin championships (Muchkin is a very popular game and this information which significant to gamers)Could you please restore the page and I will amend the page to highlight the significance.

As further evidence Eyecon is a larger event than all of the Australian conventions listed on this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gaming_conventions) other than Arcanacon (and only by a small margin - the increase in numbers at Eyecon over the last two years suggests it may soon overtake Arcanacon). This is what prompted me to create the page as smaller, minor conventions have their own pages but Eyecon and Sydcon, two of the largest conventions in the country do not.

The claims of being the largest RP convention in Sydney and the second-largest in Australia may be true, and would probably make the convention notable, but they also need reliable sources to back them up, along with other significant mentions in independent sources. Likewise, being the home of the Munchkin Championships might be significant to gamers, but it should also have attracted media attention. What other conventions have articles that you feel are smaller and more minor? I could take a look at them as well. A good way to work on an article without fear that it will be unduly deleted is to start a draft in your userspace, e.g. at User:Lukestrotz/Eyecon.... discospinster talk 14:25, 23 June 2011 (UTC)


Getting independent sources for a roleplaying convention is difficult. Media just don't report on roleplaying and certainly not on the web (There were a couple of articles in the local paper - i'm not sure if you have an equivalent overseas but they're small enough they don't have a web presence) and most of the info comes from blogs and forums at best (which are ephemeral). The convention does have a website (http://www.eye-con.info/) but obviously that's not independent. Also the convention is fairly new (only 4 years old) so it's not well known outside of the Sydney gaming community (one reason to put it on wikipedia). What strikes me as inconsistent is that the following pages for Australian conventions have no supporting material (and certainly no media mentions) and yet these pages are up and have been so for some time

To be honest, there is no way I could ever provide a media source (the chances of Eyecon ever being covered are slim no matter how big it is - it's pretty niche) and if you are going to insist on that then an article for Eyecon would never be possible, even if it had a thousand attendees. I also point you to the rules for A7 (the clause you used for deletion - the criterion does not apply to any article that makes any credible claim of significance or importance even if the claim is not supported by a reliable source or does not qualify on Wikipedia's notability guidelines

Wikipedia (not me personally) does insist on media sources to back up claims of notability; the guideline page at WP:N states: "Information on Wikipedia must be verifiable; if no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, then it should not have a separate article." Even if the article wasn't speedy deleted, it would likely be deleted by some other mechanism because the subject is not significantly covered elsewhere. A list of attendees wouldn't really help since it's not an independent source and we would have nothing to compare it to. It is listed as an item in the article List of gaming conventions but without outside coverage there's a slim chance a separate article would survive. ... discospinster talk 03:10, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
