Scanlan follow up

Hi discospinster,

Following up on the earlier Scanlan flag. Thanks for letting me know! I am helping Scanlan create the page - since it’s been a significant company in its community for almost 100 years, having a simple page with an overview of its history and function is important.

I completely understand concerns around making entries biased or promotional, so I would welcome any edits to the site to make it better for Wikipedia users. Would you recommend re-editing in the Sandbox? Again, the primary purpose is to inform of the company’s existence, not to market any products.

Apologies for the oversight, and thanks again for the heads up!

Hi, thanks for the note. It would be a good idea to use the Articles for Creation process, so you can get feedback before it goes "live". When writing about companies you want to avoid any hint of promotion. This can occur in ways you might not expect; for example, if you talk about how the company's profits have increased over time, even if it's a fact with citations, it could look like you are "bragging". Focus on facts and neutrality, and especially finding reliable sources that talk about the company in a significant way (i.e. not just mentioning the company or run-of-the-mill announcements) to show that it's notable. It doesn't have to be something online, it could be a newspaper article or trade magazine that's in print. Some guidelines for notability are at WP:CORP. ... discospinster talk 19:57, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Seda Basay-Yildiz

Could you please tell me, what is unbalanced at Seda Basay-Yildiz, so I can do something about it.. Thanks --87.150.97.13 (talk) 09:07, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

The article relies on what seems to be the author's impression of the events, rather than backing it up with reliable sources as to the facts. For example, Yildiz noted that this information could not be obtained via social media. Her father is 79 and does not use Facebook. According to the daily newspaper, the fax was received by Ba'ay-Yaldz on 20 December 2018 – one day after a special meeting of the Hessian Committee on the Interior on the police scandal. "There can be no other way than the police computer," Yildiz said. The police offered to obtain her a firearms licence. This is not cited and looks like you are encouraging the reader to come to a certain conclusion. ... discospinster talk 13:21, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your explanation. I see your point and I work on it. Maybe it is better, not to cite Basay-Yildiz in direct speech. I will work on it and come back to you. --Outdoor-Bro (talk) 08:47, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Page Deletion

Having gone though the article Bobby Craig, I realized he has notable source but the writer wrote it inappropriate. I write to keep the page and make the necessary edit to make it to wikipedia standard and its policy.

OK but since it's in the middle of the AfD process, it can't be moved to draft right now. You can still work on it in the meantime. ... discospinster talk 23:03, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

Would you re-review Benjamin_Gordon_(businessman) please

Hi Discospinster Appreciate very much your initial review of the Benjamin Gordon entry. The orphan issue has been removed but I wonder if you would check it again to see if the citations are now adequate and consistently authoritative, and the tone consistently objective. I provided good sources for each of the "lacking citations" instances you found. I also restructured and added a bit to make the entry less resume-like. Let me know what you think. A tag has been placed on Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Denise Sohn requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". I saw you moved 2019 Canadian federal election/Policies sandbox to User:Walter Görlitz/2019 Canadian federal election/Policies sandbox, but since it was actually MikkelJSmith and another editor (or perhaps two others) that were editing that table, I'm wondering if a more appropriate userspace might be at User:MikkelJSmith/2019 Canadian federal election/Policies sandbox? Just so other users aren't playing in another user's sandbox, if you get what I mean. I'd move it myself, but don't have page mover rights to suppress the redirect.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Carlos G. Edits for further Review

Good afternoon Discospinster,

Thank you for your edits of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_G._Duque which I published yesterday. This is my first publication and appreciate your support and guidance.

You left a note that this article includes a list of references, but its sources remain unclear because it has insufficient inline citations. (November 2019).

I have attempted to remediate this issue and added inline citations within the body of the text. At your convenience please review and advise if the changes are appropriate and have been remediated.

I am still working on the separate notability guidelines issue you notated.

Best regards,

CE

Yes, thanks, that fixed the issue. I just removed the duplicate references from the end of the page. ... discospinster talk 19:14, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Removal of link in the page 'protected intersection'

Hello, you did remove on the page Protected intersection a link I set about the software 'protected crossing' which have precisely as UNIQUE purpose to design protected intersections. In addition, the schematics on the page were based upon the output of this software. Shall these schematics also be removed ? I don't see in what the link is 'inappropriate', being exactly on topic. I should have set this link in a paragraph 'external link' and that was a mistake, but why remove the link instead of creating the appropriate paragraph? I don't get it. Disclaimer: I am the author of this software and also the authour of miscellaneous modifications and cleanups on this page, including the creation and addition of the schematics. Hi,

You fixed the layout on this page previously and I was wondering if you could lend a hand in making the episode list fit in the space to the left of the infobox. Currently, it's sits below the infobox, while the title "episdoes" remains at the top. Any help is much appreciated! Hidden Hills Editor (talk) 16:20, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

I'm not that great with tables, but I don't see a way to do that with the {{Episode table}} template. You can do it with a regular table by making it "floating" but then you would have to also format it to look like an episode table. Maybe you could ask at Template talk:Episode table about it? There might be a way I'm not aware of. ... discospinster talk 16:32, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

Notability Remediation

Good afternoon Discospinster,

Thank you for your page edits and continued support and guidance on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_G._Duque as I learn and become acclimated to becoming a wiki contributor.

This is in response to the Notability Flag mentioned which states -

"The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's notability guideline for biographies. Please help to establish notability by citing reliable secondary sources that are independent of the topic and provide significant coverage of it beyond a mere trivial mention."

I understand that the guideline calls for 2 reliable secondary sources that are independent of the topic. I have included reference citations to MuscularDevelopment.com as well as the NPCNewsOneline.com to meet this requirement. Each page points to Carlos' historical competitive history appearances with key stats and placements, as well as achievements earned for IFBB.

The specific text in the Carlos G. Duque page as been updated as follows under the BodyBuilding history header:

Carlos has been featured in many fitness websites including the American fitness and bodybuilding magazine MuscularDevelopment.com[14] and the National Physique Committee's premier online news command center - NPCnewsonline.com [15]

As evidence to prove the validity of these two secondary sources, I have provided the summaries of these two cited outlets below for your consideration. Kindly remove the Notability flag if you concur:

Muscular Development

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Muscular Development is an American fitness and bodybuilding magazine first published in 1964. It was founded by Bob Hoffman 1898 - 1985 Bob Hoffman - athlete, nutritionist, weightlifter, coach and philanthropist - was born on a farm in Tifton, Georgia on Nov 9th 1898. His family stock was good. Bob was never the seven stone weakling claimed by other physical culturists. His father was a large strong man who liked to demonstrate the hardness of his tensed muscles. Given this it his easy to see how Bob was influenced in his formative years. When Bob was 5 years old the family moved to Wilkinsburg near Pittsburgh where his athletic career started from a very young age. He was an exceptional athlete especially in aquatic sports - his favorite being canoeing. The First World War saw Bob as a hero. He gained 3 Croix de Guerres with two palms and a Silver Star from France. From Belgium he was awarded The Belgian Order of Leopold and from Italy the Italian War Cross and the Purple Heart. His business started in the 1920s, at first selling oil burners, before developing into the massive York Barbell Company. Bob Hoffman, never a great coach or great weightlifter, was a man who influenced and guided weightlifting and bodybuilding for half a century. He died on July 18th 1985 suffering heart disease and dementia. The owner and founder of the York Barbell Company, its editor from 1964 to its sale in 1986 was John Grimek. [1] MD, as it's known to many of its readers, was previously owned by Twinlab. In 2001 Twinlab sold Muscular Development to Steve Blechman who then resigned from Twinlab.[2] Muscular Development is also currently published in Romania.[1] Muscular Development focuses on bodybuilding and nutrition science. Among its current or past contributors are Michael Colgan, John Romano, Dan Duchaine, and Mike Mentzer. It was notable for including an ongoing comic strip, Max Rep: Mr. Astrotitan 2206 by illustrator Lyman Dally in the 90's. Max Rep and Quadra Blu were even once featured on the cover. After the sale of the magazine to Blechman it changed to a more "hard-core" bodybuilding magazine and focused less on fitness.[2]

National Physique Committee

The National Physique Committee (NPC) is the largest amateur bodybuilding organization in the United States. Amateur bodybuilders compete in competitions from local to national competitions sanctioned by the NPC. One amateur organization per country is recognized by the International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB), which claims to be bodybuilding's international organization and the IFBB recognizes the NPC as its amateur extension for the United States. Advanced athletes can progress as professionals and join the IFBB Professional League. In order to become an IFBB professional bodybuilder in the United States a class must first be won at the NPC Nationals Championship or be the overall winner at the NPC USA Championship. However, there are other organizations and federations in the US that also promote amateur athletics and have a professional extension. While the NPC and the IFBB are the largest and most well known, there are other amateur and professional bodybuilding organizations and federations. The NPC also sanctions bodybuilding fitness and figure competitions across the United States.

Re: Draft:International Association of Coaching

There is a link to a page not yet existing for the International Association of Coaching on the Thomas J. Leonard wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_J._Leonard

When the lin is clicked on, one is taken to this page and messsage: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=International_Association_of_Coaching&action=edit&redlink=1

A draft for this page is found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:International_Association_of_Coaching

I have added data to the page to provide a range of source material to support this page. This may not have been the best thing to do since the draft may take so many more months to be accepted and go 'live' on Wikipedia. Would it therefore be more advisable to simply create a new page from scatch and allow the draft to be deleted? Could I delete it after a new page is created?

For what it's worth, though I deprodded Bibliography of books defending Islam, I don't necessarily think it ought to be kept and probably wouldn't !vote to keep it at AfD. My concern was that your rationale seemed to run counter to WP:CSC, which says that stand-alone lists where "Every entry in the list fails the notability criteria" can be worth keeping, and was also no longer true as The revealer had added several notable books to the list in the meantime. However looking at the list now the criterion seems unfeasibly ill-defined – most of the books listed surely have defence of Islam as a secondary objective, if they engage in it at all, and some (e.g. Minaret (novel)) can probably only be said to do so as a matter of interpretation. List of Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles of 2020

I noticed that this name is being used in draft space right now, and you moved it from article space. (The draft shows it is not in the review process at this time.) With the first Billboard Hot 100 chart of 2020 coming out next week, dated January 4, 2020, and its number-one song to be determined on Monday (December 30), would it be appropriate at that time to move the contents, including the information to be released next week, back into article space?

I also have the similar question for the name "List of Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles of the 2020s", also moved from article space to draft space by you. In this case, however, it may be later into 2020, very likely after the chart dated January 4, that something new moves into the number-one position on the Hot 100, and would warrant the article at that time.

In the past, when an article of this nature had been created, ahead of the year it was for, it was usually redirected to the article for the name of the chart (Billboard Hot 100 in this case), from what I've seen. Not that this WP:OSE argument has any merit, but that's what has been done. MPFitz1968 (talk) 17:46, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

Since my post a few hours ago, another entry has popped up in article space under the above name (List of Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles of 2020), current redirected to the article for the previous year's Billboard Hot 100 number-one songs. We now have a conflict, between that new article and the draft. MPFitz1968 (talk) 23:45, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
I suppose when there is substantive content I could merge the histories if necessary. ... discospinster talk 02:51, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
There is new content at the article, with the announcement of the number-one song on Billboard's first Hot 100 for 2020. While the draft didn't have more than just a lede statement about the Billboard Hot 100 chart itself, I'm not too sure there's any concern about the content in article space being totally different. Still, to preserve the history of the article, I'd be okay with merging the draft's history, though I'll leave you to the technical details (as I'm not sure what happens with the current article exactly). Draft persus PROD

Hi - I wonder if you'd be willing to outline your thinking on Draft:Arya Toufanian - I had BLP-prodded it, you removed the prod and draftified it instead. I'm not here to argue the toss about it, you've been doing this a lot longer than I have, I'm just eager to get your thoughts on it to help me improve my reviewing. I use the NPP Flowchart, and my decision path was along the lines of: Written in English --> Not nonsense or pure vandalism etc --> Not blank --> Enough context to identify subject --> Not copyvio --> Unsourced --> has a claim of SIGNIF --> BLP yes --> No external links whatsoever --> BLP Prod. Why did you think draftification was the better option? Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 12:22, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

In this case the article had some more serious BLP issues (making unsourced claims about lawsuits and criminal charges). I felt that while it wasn't enough to be speedy deleted as an attack page, it should not be in the main space for this reason, even if there was a prod tag on it. ... discospinster talk 16:41, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

Aurora Theatre Hong Kong: already sources thoroughly included in page

Response. Thank you for your comments discospinster. Please rapidly reinstate the page. You are concerned (I suggest wrongly) with establishing publicly the sources of the information for this page. At age 79, I have had many, many years experience of establishing the Wikipedia sources of information. I have done so to support this worthy theatre company in Hong Kong that improves the Cantonese/English-language skills and political situation in these difficult HK times (I live in England) – for this I have fully and carefully done so in and for the page, fully satisfying your requests:

1. Link from another page … see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Hong_Kong#Theatres

2. In the page to state the source of 80% of the page … www.auroratheatrehk.com

3. In the page to state the source of 20% of the page Awards and credits … www.hkeld.com

Duncanogi (talk) 10:13, 6 January 2020 (UTC) Duncanogi (talk) 10:27, 6 January 2020 (UTC)

@Duncanogi: The issue is that these are primary sources, i.e., they come from the organization itself. Wikipedia requires significant discussion of the subject in third party reliable sources, like newspapers, magazines, well-known websites, etc. Furthermore the "Awards and credits" section does not tell us who gave out these awards. ... discospinster talk 14:03, 6 January 2020 (UTC)

AfC query

Hi Disco. Is any action required with this draft? You moved the initial article from the mainspace in October. The draft has now been blanked, with the article recreated here, albeit with a slightly different title. Sourcing, and IMO notability issues, are still a concern on the mainspace article. Thanks. Hello, whilst I was copy-editing Ace Hudkins, Boxer, The Nebraska Wildcat (August 30 1905 - April 8 1973) it seems you were moving the page to Ace Hudkins. I intended to do that after the CE. However, when I clicked 'publish', the edit was saved and I did not get an edit conflict and then was unable to move it to the shorter title. It now seems that I have somehow created a page at the old over-long title which needs to be deleted. Can you do this or if need to request, would G6 or A10 apply? Thank you. Thirdlane article

Hi,

An article "Thirdlane" I posted yesterday was marked for speedy deletion and then deleted the same day. As per the guidelines I contacted the editor who marked the article for deletion, but so far received no response. The article was removed by you as G11 (advertisement), even thought it was simply an article about a company and its products that in my opinion was informative and useful to readers, similar to many other articles of the similar nature. Are any articles that mention a company or products inappropriate? What are the guidelines I should have followed to improve the article and avoid the deletion?

Thank you

Aepshteyn (talk) 19:03, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

It was deleted because it had a promotional tone, e.g. talking about how it is easy to use and what benefits it provides. Wikipedia articles are only supposed to include facts, and not how wonderful the product is. Furthermore it did not show how the company is notable, in that it should be the subject of significant discussion in multiple reliable sources, not just mentioned somewhere. ... discospinster talk 19:54, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for your response. I would be happy to edit the article to make sure it includes the facts only and nothing subjective. I honestly don't see much advertising in describing a purpose, feature, or a benefit, but will try to be aware of the possibility of that being interpreted this way. As far as notable - Thirdlane is not a household name but it has a very large number of users - should that be mentioned to make it more notable?

Being new to creating content - what would be the recommended next step in getting the article about Thirdlane published?

I'm puzzled. How significant does a person have to be before they can be listed on List of tallest people? I don't see any parameters for the list. What are they? I believe anyone that looks over List of tallest people will click on my article to see the story of the tallest Nazi soldier. He is a significant figure for WW II and the 1950s. I would like to be able to put him on the list. What are the requirements? --Doug Coldwell (talk) 18:13, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

The problem is that the list could go on forever if we keep getting so specific. Obviously someone is the tallest of some set of persons but we have to have some kind of cutoff. If he was the tallest soldier in WWII, or the tallest German soldier ever, that's one thing, but "tallest person in a particular country of a particular political party in a particular war" is getting a bit granular. ... discospinster talk 19:17, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
I do believe my person that I created an article on DOES meet your parameters. The article has said that he was the tallest soldier in WWII AND he was the tallest German soldier ever. Do you know otherwise? Are there parameters for the list that specifies these type of specifications? I didn't notice them. Where are they located in the List article? I am very interested in getting my article that I created on Jakob Nacken put into List of tallest people. I believe that would be correct. Perhaps we should get a consensus on this from the top editors? --Doug Coldwell (talk) 19:35, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

CHAZ (Capital Hill Autonomous Zone) deletion

Hi Discospinster,

Could you elaborate on the deletion of my recent CHAZ addition to the list of micronations? Although CHAZ has only recently formed, it appears very comparable to Freetown Christiania as an autonomous zone in Copenhagen. It has its own Wikipedia entry, it has attracted considerable media attention, it has a serious purpose (or purposes), and merits inclusion on historical grounds at least as much as some other micronations in the list which are now inactive or wholly defunct.

Looking forward to hearing your thinking.

Thanks,

Eastkeil

As stated on the article's talk page, it's described as an autonomous zone, not a micronation. These are two different things in that a micronation claims to be an actual independent state, while an autonomous zone is still within an existing state, but they govern themselves in some way. If you can find a reliable source that describes CHAZ/CHOP as a micronation then feel free to add it back. I don't believe that Freetown Christiania should be in the micronations list either, so I will look more closely at that. There are reliable sources that describe Freetown Christiania as a micronation. ... discospinster talk 14:26, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

I don't know what page you are referring to. ... discospinster talk 00:42, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello, you moved this page to draft earlier today and it was almost immediately returned to mainspace without much improvement, if any. I was unable to move it to draft again as Draft:Adrianna So already exists. Can you assist please? Thanks! Eagleash (talk) 15:03, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

OK, not to worry; it has ended up at AfD. Thanks anyway. Eagleash (talk) 21:49, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Translation of the article from Italian into English - Ship 'Elettra'

Hello:

Sorry but I'm not sure whether to post this on your Talk page or mine. Mikeo1938 (talk) 15:30, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Here it is again:

My translation of Elettra

Hello discospinster and thanks for your comment. But there is a note with the Italian article requesting a translation. And that is what I am trying to do. However, I'm not creating an article from scratch. I am merely translating the article that appears in the Italian Wiki. This is the request ... Wikipedia is requesting a translation.

It is one thing to translate an article but quite another to find citations. Are you saying that my translation will not be accepted unless I find citations? There may be some citations in the Italian article (cannot remember just at the moment) and if there are, I will, of course, include them.

I am happy for my work to be held in draft form until my translation is complete - but at that point I would like it to be published. My translation will be a total waste of time if it is denied publication because of a lack of citations.

Mikeo1938 (talk) 15:25, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

If there are citations in the Italian article then those can be imported into the English translation as well. Once the citations are added you can move the article back into published mode. ... discospinster talk 15:43, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
OK and all noted. So I will continue with my translation and include any citations and references that appear in the Italian article. At that end point I will "undraft" the new article and include a mention that it is a translation.

Regards Mikeo1938 (talk) 15:47, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Yes that is a good approach. ... discospinster talk 22:57, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of Thomas DeMark

Hello Discospinster, I'm a novice Wiki user and was referencing Thomas DeMark while trying to help create a new Wiki page for a company of his that didn't already have a Wiki. I heard it mentioned during a CNBC tv interview yesterday. I didn't mean or intend to make any changes to Thomas DeMark. Will you please help restore Thomas DeMark? I understand the text I used for Symbolik was from their website and could've been interpreted as promotional so I'll have to read more before helping Wiki add a Symbolik reference. There aren't any WP:COI or WP:PAID disputes for my contributions, I read Thomas DeMark books while in college and when I see articles on Bloomberg/CNBC I check Wiki and add the reference if they haven't already been added. Thank you! Kreid913 (talk)

It would probably be a better idea if you started it in draft space (Draft:Thomas DeMark), that way you can work on it without having the possibility of being deleted. The text from the previous article is, as you mentioned, quite promotional, so it doesn't make sense to restore it. ... discospinster talk 17:53, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Article "Gennady Ermak" proposed delition

I assume that the main reason for the deletion is “significant coverage”. I agree that the subject is not something that everybody is talking about. Still, it has public interest: 1) research work of Gennady Ermak is frequently referenced by others; for example, researchgate.net says: “Gennady Ermak's 50 research works with 3903 citations and 2564 reads…” 2) his research might be not even the main interest to public. His books draws more attention, especially the controversial book “Communism: The Great Misunderstanding.” Famous American social critic characterized it as “interesting and important.” In fact, the reason that I decided to create this article is that, in a blog about this book, someone questioned: Who is Ermak? I could not find any information about him.

I improved the article a bit by providing some of the above information. Hope it is more suitable now. It is up to you whether to accept it and I am not going to contest your decision. Prosto aneg (talk) 17:24, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

ThinkPad Lineup draft moving

Hello! Can You revert this moving to Draft space? Sorry about this request, but this is not a independent pages, it's just a part of a ThinkPad page, and... I must add a sources? But, it's just a list of current models. You can see a older version of these table here, the current page now have a these redlink, that's just a bad result. ThisIsNotABetter (talk) 01:34, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

These pages were created as separate articles, which means that they should have some citations. If you mean them to be embedded in the ThinkPad page and other pages, then a template would be a way to do that. ... discospinster talk 14:59, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for a advice, but why the "template" must be used? Because I have a previous recommendation, and it's has been a recommendation to create a mainspace page. That's a rule collision, or a non-transparent rule? You may see, currently I extensively use a templates in my userspace, and I prefer to use it for embedding code and formulas inside of tables. In my mind, that's a much better way to utilizing of templates power, I think. And one-time usable templates (like these tables), maybe - this is not a better solution (not bad, but non-elegant). ThisIsNotABetter (talk) 18:32, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
Hello. Sorry, that's a silly question? ThisIsNotABetter (talk) 01:39, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
Mainspace pages need citations. ... discospinster talk 18:35, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for plain answer. But can You expand it? That's may be impolite, but I must know: why the template pages don't need a sources with the same content?.. ThisIsNotABetter (talk) 01:47, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
Templates are normally part of a larger article which itself would contain citations. ... discospinster talk 03:26, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
That's a better answer, thanks! Maybe, the Wiki engine must have a catchy warning block to prevent a creating of slashy sub-pages? That's a relevant request to a dev team, so. ThisIsNotABetter (talk) 17:57, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
I don't think it happens often enough for devs to bother automating it. It's probably better that a human reviews it first. ... discospinster talk 22:11, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
