Welcome

Hi, Dogru144, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the Five pillars of Wikipedia and simplified ruleset. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will be by to help you shortly.

Additional tips

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Happy Wiki-ing.Kf4bdy talk contribs

PS: This is not a bot and you did nothing to prompt this message. This is just a friendly welcome by a fellow Wikipedian.

Clarification of Categories vs Main Articles

Dogru, here are some information pages that I implore you to read:

  • Wikipedia:Categorisation FAQ - This explains "What are categories?," "What is the purpose of categories?," and "How do I categorize categories which have a main article?"
  • Wikipedia:Categorization - guidelines on how categories are used, and when they should be used

I have gone ahead and instated my suggested edits to the Lounge music article. Please read this entire comment and ask questions, either to me or to other Wikipedia editors, before reverting the changes. I appreciate your persistence in this matter, and your willingness to see this through. After all, being bold is a big part of Wikipedia. However, it is critical that you read about categories and understand how they work. What is claimed to be a Wikipedia error is not an error at all - Wikipedia is functioning exactly as it has been designed.

I will begin by saying that I have not "questioned the propriety of including Capitol Records as a category." My comments thus far have been purely technical in nature. If you believe that Capitol Records is a worthwhile category (I am not arguing to the contrary), then feel free to create the category. As it stands right now, such a category (category, not article) does not exist. I realize that you do not believe that this is the case, so I will try to explain in greater detail.

Here is how Wikipedia is set up:

  • A main article page and a category page are two independent things.
    • When an article page is created, a category page is not automatically created - it must be created separately.
    • A Capitol Records article page does indeed exist. A Capitol Records category page does not exist.
    • When a page on Wikipedia has "Category:" in front of its name (e.g. Category: Capitol Records) it is unrelated to the article which is not marked in such a way.
    • A Category page is dedicated to collecting a list of articles that fit under that particular category, not an article page which collects information about that particular subject.
  • When searching for pages through the "long box on the left side of the screen", Wikipedia searches article pages, NOT category pages. Category pages must either be accessed via the list of categories or by typing them in manually into your web browser's address bar.
  • Merely linking to such a category does not cause it to exist.
    • In order for the category to exist you need to click on the red link and then write a summary of the category.
    • You then need to place the category link on other relevant pages.

To make this more clear, search for the article "Pop music." Once you have reached this article, in the address bar of your browser you will see the title ".../wiki/Pop_music." Now, return to the "lounge music" article and click on the "Pop music" category link at the bottom of the page. The address is shown as ".../wiki/Category:Pop_music," an entirely different page. I can understand that this system of filing can be very confusing, especially since categories often (but not always) have the same name as an article. However, article pages and category pages are intentionally kept separate. It is how Wikipedia was designed, and it can be used in no other way.

In the case of "Capitol Records" an article exists, but not a category. In other cases, a category will exist, but not an article. Here is an example:

  • Type "German loanwords" into the search box on the left side of the page. It comes up with nothing, because an article by that title does not exist.
  • Now, navigate to "Category:German_loanwords" by typing it in to your browser's address bar. To make this easier, here is a link: Category:German loanwords
  • This shows how Category pages do not show up in a normal search, but article pages do. It also shows how the existence of one does not necessitate the existence of the other.
  • You will also notice how the category of "German loanwords" is merely a list of links to articles that are "German loanwords." If a "German loanwords" article existed, it would contain information about German loanwords. This is the largest difference between category pages and article pages.

Again, I appreciate your persistence, but please try to understand that article pages and category pages exist independently and have very different functions. Don't let this discourage you though - many of Wikipedia's inner-workings can seem confusing, but it's worth the time to learn.

Page moves

When you create a "new" article with the same content (i.e. cut and paste), as you did with Jean Baptiste Loeillet de gant to Jean-Baptiste Loeillet de Ghent, it becomes very confusing, because then there are essentially two articles, which are no longer connected. They might grow in very different ways, which we want to avoid, and they also "break" the history, meaning that other people who have contributed to the article will no longer get credit on the de Ghent page. In the future please use the "move" tab at the top of the page. For more informaion, please see Wikipedia:How to rename (move) a page.

Now, the actual issue, what the name of the pages should be. I'm not sure about that. Both don't seem quite right. The capitalization of "de gant" is clearly wrong. Usually we differentiate between people of the exact same name by using their profession, i.e. "John Smith (cooper)" "John Smith (blacksmith)", but obviously in this case that's not possible. Grove has "Jean Baptiste Loeillet (ii) [‘Loeillet de Gant’]", and both the titles so far are a somewhat random admixture of these. I think I'll move the original article to Jean Baptiste Loeillet of Ghent, and make some redirects, and do the same thing with his cousin's article. Thanks for your work. Mak (talk) 03:50, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Greetings!

It's not every day we get someone interested in Baroque composers. I noticed your edit to the talk page of 1772 in music, and fixed the problem: Loeillet (of London) is now on the 1680 in music page where he belongs. Hey, happy editing and welcome to Wikipedia! You'll find there's a bunch of decent music editors around, and I see you've already met Makemi. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 04:38, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Automatic signature!

Hello! Did you know you can use four tildes in order to automatically sign a talk page or such? Like this: ~~~~ for me returns Jobjörn (Talk ° contribs) 21:44, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Please don't accuse people of various things when they're only trying to keep discussions in order:

  • I didn't delete your comments, I moved them to the bottom of the page where new discussion belongs.
  • I have no personal interest in the outcome of your debate and I certainly have no economic "dogs in this hunt".
  • I'm not a sock puppet of anyone -- please don't make that accusation lightly.

Please do read WP:CIV, WP:NPA, and WP:AGF.

Sangro123, what is your basis for blocking me? I am requesting unblock.

The following is the pertinent text material cited by Sangro123 as reason for blocking:

Correction re blocking party

Sango123 is blocking party. Sango123 still has not replied with justification for block.

Your block log doesn't show you ever being blocked, the block message likely said something about autoblocked, you can read details about autoblocks by following that link. If you get hit by such a block we need to know the full details of the block message otherwise we are also none the wiser as to your block and can do nothing about it. --pgk(talk) 14:44, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Blocking party identified

I was indeed blocked. Blocking party was: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Sango123 Party (an administrator) never responded with explanation for block.

Have you looked at the block log for yourself? Have you read WP:AUTOBLOCK which I pointed you to? You have not been directly blocked, you have been impacted as colateral damage of another block. --pgk(talk) 15:27, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes I looked at autoblock site you referenced.

I looked at Sango123's page and apparently about a dozen people got autoblocked and User:Sango123's name came up as responsible party

English Language Learner, etc

{{Limited english proficiency|title=Limited English Proficiency}}

I'm not sure what you were trying to do. Just thought I'd let you know. --Singkong2005 talk 13:24, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

I was trying to replace Limited english proficiency with Limited English Proficiency. The former is incorrect: English must be capitalized and Proficiency must be capitalized as this conforms with the education and government established capitalization of the phrase.
A wikipedia suggested I insert the phrase you saw posted. Could you please help with eliminating this typo of a redirect? Thank you. Dogru144 18:01, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
I don't know why they gave that advice. I created a redirect (check that link for more info on redirects) at Limited English Proficiency. No need to replace or remove the old one, it will just redirect people even if they get the capitalisation wrong. --Singkong2005 talk 03:20, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Please don't troll, "relatable" IS a word

Hello.

Re: your angry deletion, "relateable ain't a word!"

"Relatable" is very much a word, and a basic one at that:

Furthermore, "relatable" is weaker than "related". Relatable means "that which can or could be related to", as opposed to "that which is indeed or directely related to". For instance, Hitler isn't related to Napoleon, but Hitler is relatable to Napoleon.

If you have doubt about a word, don't delete it. Consult Google for a quick check, then several of the myriad of online dictionaries available. Please avoid the appearance of impropriety such as starting petty fights over basic English words easy to lookup, or you'll quickly be labeled a WP:TROLL and banned. Thanks.

It is difficult to reply to this person. One should not use such a moral ground, when in the first volley of communication a banning threat is issued. Secondly, the user is hiding behind an IP address; no UserName means it is hard to communicate with the person.

I was merely trying to edit for grammar. Dogru144 14:06, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

re:Issue of Nacos & articles linked to her

That she has exposed a link between terrorism alerts and Bush's popularity is disturbing to wikipedia editors, including one administrator. Before these individuals removed the links there were references to the Nacos article. Dogru144 23:27, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Ah sorry to hear that, I'll look into it... but like it says on the bot's page, no one is required to create incoming links, it's just a suggestion to help the article out. Thanks. --W.marsh 23:37, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:NicadeKoenigswarter.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:NicadeKoenigswarter.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 20:10, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

RE: Converting an article title to end in "accent", not "Accent"

Hi, Dogru. I think the only way you can do that is to move the page to "Tidewater accent." Just click "edit," then the move tab. You might want to look at meta:Help:Moving a page if you want more info.

PS- I'm glad you like the article! I'm hoping to expand it, but I don't have any materials readily available (I'm currently living in Paris, and American dialects just aren't their thing here!) Confiteordeo 22:03, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

When I type "Tidewater accent," I get sent to "Tidewater Accent," which makes me think that it redirects the lowercase spelling to the uppercase. I'm not sure exactly how the capitalization system works with names. However, when I change the spelling in the URL (i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidewater_Accent to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidewater_accent,) it tells me that Tidewater_accent doesn't exist. Therefore, I'd say that you're safe in moving the article. Confiteordeo 23:24, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Re:

Sure, I've actually gone ahead and removed it myself. --W.marsh 02:05, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Re:Thanks for stub tip/ Have redirect tip?

No problem for the stub information. If you want to redirect an article, you should blank the text from the article you want to redirect and, at the very top, put in #REDIRECT[[Article to redirect to]]. In this case, it would be #REDIRECT[[African Meeting House]].

Thank you for starting the article. I have been meaning to write it for quite some time.--Rockero 22:08, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Any time you have an editing window open, there appears on the screen just below it a number of special characters in blue. Some are wiki markup, some are symbols, some are letters with diacritics, and others are letters in non-Roman alphabets. This is the easiest way to use accents. I, however, prefer to use the alt codes. For example, to create á, hold down the alt key and punch in 160 on your keypad. You can also copy and paste characters from your character map (usually under accessories on the start menu if your running Windows). If you need further clarification, don't hesitate to ask.--Rockero 09:40, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Tasting
Hmmm, perhaps I shouldn't have recommended the "alt codes" method. It is a bit convoluted. But just in case it was an issue, make sure that "Num Lock" is on before trying again. Really, the best way to use special characters is to use the clickable characters in blue that appear beneath the editing window. This may not be available to you if you don't have javascript enabled. Another alternative is to copy and paste (highlight the text you want to copy, hold down "Ctrl" and hit "C" to copy, and then place you cursor where you want to paste the text or character and hold down "Ctrl" again had hit "V". An alternative to using the keyboard is to use the copy and paste commands on the drop-down menu under "Edit" at the top of your browser window.) If the special characters appear below the editing window (which they should), you can copy and paste them from there. I hope this helps.--Rockero 00:12, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Quincy Jones/Linux

Thanks for your message about the Quincy Jones article. If you feel that the picture caption should change back that's fine by me - I just felt that the Paris in France is by far the most well known. Also, the article Paris refers to that city (it isn't a disambiguation page). The other Paris articles are all about places in North America that have been named after the original Paris, and are not nearly so well known. I might have seemed a little rude just changing the article like that, but I felt that the matter was a bit too trivial to waste time posting on the talk page.

About Linux: It's not necessarily true that you'll have trouble connecting to the net, or have trouble getting your peripherals to work. If you connect to the internet using a standard network card or modem, and you have a reasonably modern processor and RAM, things should work fine straight away. If you have an ATI graphics card you may also encounter problems (but don't let this put you off trying!).

If you want to give Linux a try, I recommend that you download a so-called LiveDistro. This is a CD/DVD Image that you burn onto a disk. You put the disk into your computer's drive and it will boot Linux without touching anything on your hard drive (your Windows/Mac files won't be altered).

There are lots of different types of Linux system out there called 'distributions' or 'distro's' for short. I use 'SuSE Linux', which is arguably one of the easiest to get used to. Another one which is regarded as very user friendly is Ubuntu - you should probably try this one first.

Don't be put off if you can't get everything to work with Linux on your first try. If you are having problems, you can bet your life loads of other people have encountered and solved the problem before you. Try searching http://google.com/linux if you get stuck, or ask friends on Wikipedia :)Boabbriggs 18:01, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Alles Nederlands

How is it not a movement or group? It is a real group, as I myself am a member. Whether it is a huge movement or not is debatable, but Alles Nederlands IS a real group and their official website was linked to. Perhaps you could explain your reasoning for removing it a bit better than ´´Google said it wasn´t a group´´ when its official website says otherwise.Gorovich 18:16, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

I´ve lived in Tennessee my entire life. The group´s objectives are stated on the ´´Wie zijn wij?´´ (Who are we) section. The only objective of the group is to make Dutch the official language of America and encourage its use amongst Americans, a group united by a sole purpose without the divisions of left or right. As for contacting the group, I had assumed that there was a contact part of the website, but aparantly there isn´t. I also realize that there aren´t many Dutch speakers in America, but that is part of what the group is about.

Aside from politics, we also help people learn Dutch and hold small events at times to encourage people to learn and speak Dutch, a language which is very similar to English and easy for many to learn. While Alles Nederlands is comical to many, we do have serious motives in both establishing the Dutch language as the official language and helping people learn Dutch. RE: Ground Zero dust

I apologize for any misunderstanding regarding this article. It appeared to be an empty article which qualifies for speedy deletion. As speedy deletion candidates do not require dialog, I chose not to notify you. It's a good idea to use "show preview" when creating an article, and only save the page once it's in its finished form. Otherwise those doing new page patrol may tag it if it meets speedy deletion criteria. Thank you. --NMChico24 18:19, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought you had already removed the tags. I have since removed them. What I meant by previewing the article first is to use the "show preview" button right next to the "save page" button. It's fine to post a stub article, but if the article has little or no content, or insufficient context to be expanded upon, it may be tagged for deletion. Previewing allows you to play around with the article and at least make it a legitimate stub before actually posting it for others to see and edit. I hope this helps. --NMChico24 18:30, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
In the case of your redirect, it wasn't initially done correctly, and I couldn't figure out where it was supposed to be pointing. I probably jumped the gun. Using the preview feature avoids that, though, because you can preview it to see if the redirect actually works or if it's blank. Again, I should have allowed more time for the redirect to be corrected. --NMChico24 18:49, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Dont think you need to add a tag to the template itself - that template is used in a number of other articles. Try undoing any changes youve made to the template, and then just use opentheme = Person's name in the article. (I think the template codeword needs to be just a single word, by the way). The answer is 'yes' as far as I know. I was not around when the show first aired. Heck, my mother was just out of high school and I would not exist for another 10 years or so. Hi Dogru144. We might help Wikipedia develop a better Woman article if we assume good faith and work with TRFA to improve it. S/he's spot on about the section being non-global. And lists, by and large, rarely do a complex section justice. I can see how it's possible for an editor to read that section as it stands as promotion of a few "favorites" rather than as a good articulation on how and why the status of women has changed.
A while back you challenged us on the talk page to develop that section into a seperate article. Perhaps this is a good time to put some real work into developing it. TRFA may even help... -- Siobhan Hansa 21:13, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

I've gone ahead and changed the article Mbila to redirect to Mbila (musical instrument). Daktari

Dogru144, I don't know why you felt you had to restore the material about Mike Wofford playing a tack piano on Daktari, to the Shelly Manne page. It's an interesting fact, but to me it clearly belongs on a page about Daktari or Mike Wofford. The first time, I didn't just remove that and related details from the Shelly Manne page, I moved them to the Daktari page, even adding some more details there. If anyone is interested, they can just click the links! The Shelly Manne article is supposed to be about him, not about unusual instruments other musicians might have played on his albums. --Alan W 03:11, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

OK, I see your point, but I think that the way you added the tack-piano thing was too abrupt a change from what the rest of the paragraph was talking about. I have come up with another version that I think more smoothly integrates this point into what I was trying to say about Manne and his openness to experimentation. Hopefully, we are both satisfied now! --Alan W 22:12, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Mann, Manne, and Daktari

Hi, Dogru144. Thanks for your comment on my edit of Daktari. I see we both appreciate music and musicians that are a bit off the beaten track of current popular taste these days. How many people nowadays have ever even heard the music from Daktari? I bet we are among the very few. Somebody has to keep the memory of these guys alive, I guess. As for Herbie Mann, yes, he was certainly good, as I'm reminded every so often when I hear something with him in it on the radio. (I vaguely recall a whole show that was a tribute to him on local radio station WBGO a few months ago.) Of course, the similarity in Shelly's and Herbie's last names was just a coincidence, especially since "Mann" was not the name Herbie was born with. As a bit of "trivia," I can think of only one album on which the two performed together, an album by the West Coast singing team of "Jackie and Roy" from the Fifties, where Mann and Manne were both sidemen. I've often thought that it might have been amusing for them to do an album together and call it something like "Mann to Manne" :-) Well, it's too late now, as they are both gone. Moving pages.

Please don't do Cut & Paste moves like you've done to the Republic article. It hides the contribution log and makes it impossible to diff the changes against earlier versions. There's a "Move" tab in the upper right hand corner, though it shouldn't be used if the move is controversial (see Help:Moving a page); there's WP:RM for that.

(Also, I don't understand what you mean by British spelling as reason to move the article - you could have just changed organization - > organisation in the first line at the old location. No need to move it somewhere else.) SnowFire 13:58, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Re:Columns in Black Saint/Soul Note

Hi Dogru, I had some success with the following:

{{Multicol}}

  • text in first column

{{Col-break}}

  • text in second column

{{Multicol-end}}

You can see it here.

I think you were just missing the first and last tags, so it didn't format correctly.

Hope this helps ... discospinster talk 12:28, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Re:Juan González

Well, I can't really resolve the dispute because I don't have any more power than you do. Since there are editors that object to the redirect, it would probably be best to go to Redirects for Discussion. Follow the instructions there, and it will open up a discussion on the issue where you can put forth your arguments. ... discospinster talk 22:20, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject World music

Hi. I saw that you asked someone how to sign up for a WikiProject. This varies from WikiProject to WikiProject, but the basic procedure is to add your page to the Members list on the appropriate page. In this case, it's the main page for Wikipedia:WikiProject World music#Membership. I've added instructions to the page so that you can add your name easily. If you have any more questions, feel free to direct them to me on my talk page.

Oh, and I also took the liberty of correcting the World music userbox on your user page; if this isn't what you want, feel free to change it back.

Ronald Reagan book addition

Hi Dogru. I noticed that you recently added a book in Ronald Reagan's article. The place that you added it is only where books that have cited phrases in the text of the article are placed, so it would be better if you could please add the book to the Ronald Reagan Bibliography article, an extended version and a good reference list of books by/about Ronald and Nancy Reagan. I am going to remove it from the list at the bottom of the Reagan article, for no phrases in the body of the article are being cited by it, and feel free to add it to Ronald Reagan Bibliography. New York City accent

You removed text that had been added to the New York City article regarding the local accent. While I agree that the demographics section may not be the perfect spot to place it, the information would seem to be a distinctive aspect of teh city that should be included somewhere. It is true that an article exists on the subject, but there should be some link from the NYC article. I looked through the article again, but I couldn't spot any section that would seem to be an obvious fit, and the lead section seems less than ideal. Do you have any suggestions as to where this information can be placed in the article? Alansohn 03:38, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, we usually don't block for vandalims unless whoever it is persists and has had a few warnings about it. An isolated incident doesn't seem to be a valid reason to block. 3RR could be blockable for this IP though if he was revert warring to a prefered revision more than 3 times. — Moe ε 16:40, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Hey -- I reverted your last edit. For two reasons. 1) It was a verbatim copy of the source which is a copy vio -- paraphrase it 2) Is this uncorroborated detail even appropriate? I mean, if this lady provides some proof, then I'm all for filling in the details. Thoughts? Therefore 20:33, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

I see what you are driving at. The article does discuss the allegation. I guess since it is not now corroborated, this sort of detail strikes me as, if not unfair, unnecessary. But I won't revert if you want to re-add it with, I would think, some paraphrasing -- not of the quote but of the Wendy Cortez detail. 20:41, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Recent edit warring at North Central American English

Dogru, I blocked 208.104.45.20 (talk · contribs) for 3rr at North Central American English. You've also made four reversions in 24 hours and three minutes on the same article. Due to the circumstances (you making far fewer reverts than the IP and trying harder to get an explanation and dialog about the situation) I'm not going to block you. However, other admins in future situations might not be so kind. If this comes up again, I suggest you ask the editor on his/her talk page for an explanation on the article's talk page. If that's not forthcoming, then revert once. If the other editor isn't responsive, let someone else revert so you don't risk running afoul of 3RR (this often happens accidentally). I know we're sometimes slow to handle things on the 3RR noticeboard. All the advice I can really offer for that is to just wait longer. Having an article in the wrong state for 24 hours rarely does any harm (but it can be annoying).--Chaser - T 02:35, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Quotes and Publications

Yes, quotes are used for magazines and newspapers. (re your removal of them from "Village Voice".) Dogru144 20:13, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

From Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(titles): "Italics should be used for: . . . Periodicals (newspapers, journals, and magazines)"

"Citation needed" tags

Please note that "citation needed" tags are not intended for the original contributor of an uncited statement to use. If you add a statement to an article, it is your respnsibility to include a citation. It is not appropriate to add the "citation needed" tag and expect others to find the citation and insert it. Adding content without citing a reliable source is not consistent with Wikipedia's policy of verifiability. If you don't have a citation, don't add the uncited statement. "Citation needed" tags are only for an editor to insert after an uncited statement that is already in an article. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Ward3001 17:43, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, my mistake! After looking at the edit again, I see that you added to a paragraph that already had a "citation needed" tag. I originally thought you wrote the entire paragraph at the end of this edit [2]. My apologies. Ward3001 18:32, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

About this [5]... You do realize that the Ahmaddiya claims are of a religious nature based upon a quaint reading of the Qu'ran & other Islam-stuff? It isn't attempting to be the result of authoritative research. In that section I was reporting an opinion not a fact. The Behnam 17:18, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Dogru, I've consulted WP:OR before, thank you very much.
WP:OR forbids Wikipedians from committing original research - it has nothing to do with what research or claims other sources make. I am not Rabbi Marvin Tokayer or the Ahmadiyya sect - I'm just reporting their strange opinions on Kashmiri people. BTW, Wikipedia is not against reporting opinions. They just have to be reported as opinions, rather than facts (which themselves are simply very agreed-upon and solidified opinions, but that's aside the point). Hence I write "The Ahmaddiya sect believes that Kashmiri people are descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel" rather than writing only "Kashmiri people are descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel." The key is in not presenting what is a disputable opinion as a fact.
When I first encountered that article, the Judaic thing was presented as a fact, so I adjusted the presentation to clarify that it is an opinion and nothing more. From my outside knowledge I knew that Ahmadiyyas think the same thing, so I added that (with a source, of course).
All in all, I haven't committed any OR here, so I suggest that perhaps you consult WP:OR instead, as it is completely absurd to describe reporting directly relevant opinions as original research.
There is a point of WP:OR that applies here, but it is not specific to the Lost Tribes section. As we don't have any RS narrating the topic of "Kashmiri people," we (the Wikipedians) are deciding how to narrate this topic. This is forbidden by WP:OR, second sentence, which states that we should not create "novel narratives." Unfortunately this is done on many articles, and voters at the deletion nomination do not seem to grasp how a novel narrative is original research. Until RS narrate upon the topic of "Kashmiri people," we shouldn't even have an article, as it is completely inappropriate for Wikipedians to decide what comprises the topic and how it should be presented.
As I've yet to run into an RS coverage of "Kashmiri people" as a topic, I'm not sure whether or not the Lost Tribes opinion would be mentioned - I suspect that an RS may mention the Ahmaddiya claim but of course this is my speculation. In any case, I don't mind leaving out that part until we see some real coverage of this topic. The only problem is that we can take out the rest of the article on the same grounds - in fact, more, because the rest of the article generally doesn't even have a listed source.
While it should be deleted for now, I'm afraid that a nomination would be a hopeless endeavor. Recently I nominated some articles for deletion because they are "novel narratives" but these AFDs ended in "keep" despite nobody being able to answer to my central argument for deletion. Hopefully, there are some RS narrations somewhere out there that can be relied upon for defining the scope of this topic.

Penultimate

  • I noticed you removed the word "penultimate" from the article "All Our Yesterdays." It is indeed the penultimate episode. Look the word up, then correct your revisions, please. Sir Rhosis 04:45, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I will do the work for you. "Penultimate" means "the next to last." It does not mean "the very last." "All Our Yesterdays" comes right before "Turnabout Intruder." Thus "All Our Yesterdays" is indeed the penultimate episode. You're welcome. Sir Rhosis 04:51, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Re:Canadian spelling

The main feature of Canadian spelling, I think, is that it is not identical to either American spelling or British spelling. We write "jail" instead of "gaol" and "flavour" instead of "flavor". And we also can't decide whether it's "licence" or "license", "defense" or "defence"! In terms of editing Wikipedia, however, I'll just go with whatever is the theme of that particular article. ... discospinster talk 00:07, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Katherine Prudhomme-O'Brien, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Katherine Prudhomme-O'Brien is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Katherine Prudhomme-O'Brien, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Reference box

You've replaced the reference box, I believe twice, for Mr. Crestillo. Why? It looks nice; and there's nothing controversial with it. I do give you a high five for the other reformatting of the references. Cheers, Dogru144 02:07, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm a fan of the scrolling reference box, but it only really makes sense if there are very large numbers of references in proportion to the size of the article, not an issue here. Is there a need for it here? Alansohn 02:20, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Prod Tags

Hi Dogru144. Please don't place Prod tags on talk pages as you did on Talk:Mary_Eisenhower. They're only meant to be used on articles, user pages, and user talk pages. If there's any confusion, either see WP:Prod, or drop me a line. --Bfigura (talk) 03:06, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

A prod tag is the tag used to propose an article for deletion, and is created like this: {{prod}}. See WP:PROD for more details. But basically, at some point you stuck one on the talk page of an article, and they're only meant to go on actual articles, not discussion pages (with the exception of user talk pages. Let me know if I'm not clear. Best, --Bfigura (talk) 22:01, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Music of Israel - Iraqi music

Please read Rich Janis's comments at Talk:Music of Israel#Transplanted musical traditions from Iraq about Music of Israel#Transplanted musical traditions from Iraq. He has some questions about the references. Not having read them I am at a loss to fix them.

Thanks, --Ravpapa 04:44, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Later: I went ahead and did it myself. Please take a look. I'm afraid I didn't leave much of your original prose. Hope you are not offended (a lot of people take umbrage when they are rewritten). --Ravpapa 09:29, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Still later: Nice work. I combined a couple of sentences that were repetitive. I had omitted your reference to Salima Pasha because she never immigrated to Israel (though she was Jewish). Since the article is about Israeli music, she seems a bit off-topic. As written, it appears as though she, too, immigrated. In any case, I leave it to you to decide whether to include her or not.
Thanks, --Ravpapa 18:30, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of The REAL Rudy

A tag has been placed on The REAL Rudy, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per CSD a7.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. Bfigura (talk) 22:58, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Lastly

I noticed that you cross-posted personal attacks warnings on the following talk pages: [6], [7], [8], [9], [10]. Please note that this is probably contrary to WP:NPA, WP:CANVASS and WP:AGF. Granted, at the time, I believe you were acting in good faith, but I don't really think they're appropriate (especially since the page isn't going anyway). Thanks, --Bfigura (talk) 00:07, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Removal of Speedy tags

Please note, that per WP:CSD, you may not remove speedy templates from articles you have authored. If you wish to contest deletion, you may place the {{hangon}} tag on the page. Best, --Bfigura (talk) 23:36, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

So after doing some googling, I did come across some ref's to support your case. (In the HuffPost). I'll be adding it to the article. (Again, note that this was not some sort of POV-hatchet job CSD -- probably just too much time playing whack-a-mole at new articles). --Bfigura (talk) 00:01, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Dogru, thanks for alerting me to this dispute on my talk page. I came here to express my view that the article should stay, but also to caution you that you shouldn't unilaterally remove a CSD tag, even if you think the article is not subject to speedy deletion. I agree with Bfigura on that score.
I also did some searching (only I use Yahoo!). Along with the references on sites like Huff Post and Common Dreams, I found a short article in The Nation. I'll add that to go along with whatever Huff Post citation Bfigura includes. JamesMLane t c 00:13, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Are you serious?

Please note the existence of this page: [11]. It lists new pages as they are created. (See this Wikipedia:New_pages_patrol.) Many people, myself included perform the task of new-page patrolling, where inappropriate articles are flagged for deletion. In this case, I made a mistake, and have admitted as much. I suggest you educate yourself before continuing to make unfounded personal attacks. --Bfigura (talk) 03:03, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Because, the page registers the creation of new pages 'instantly', and using twinkle (a tool developed to help with New page Patrolling / Counter Vandalism), it takes all of 2 seconds to mark a page for deletion and notify the creator. I will warn you though, cross-posting is a violation of WP:CANVASS. If you feel my actions have been that inappropriate, I'd suggest you take it up at the admin noticeboard rather than persist in a behavior that violates policy. --Bfigura (talk) 03:22, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
If you don't want to believe me about twinkle and Special:newpages, then fine - you can think whatever makes you happy. As far as other pages go, I honestly haven't seen the page you're referring to before. It's hardly as if you were singled out in some way though: I probably flagged 20-30 other pages for speedy deletion tonight, if not more. (Ie, pages that basically consisted of the words "(insert name) is stupid crackhead, and I hate him", or pages that were about non-notable people/places/websites). But that doesn't mean I see every page that's created, nor do I care to. There's plenty of other people doing the same thing, and most of the bad pages don't last too long. In your case "Real Rudy" looked like some non-notable attack video floating around on youtube, so I marked it for deletion. I made a mistake -- I'm human, it happens. Now if you have any more questions, I'd be happy to answer them. If not, fine too (and good editing to you). --Bfigura (talk) 03:48, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I think I only got a partial comment there. --Bfigura (talk) 04:08, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm about to take a break for a bit, so I'll come back to it in a bit. But should I take this to mean that you no longer think I'm some sort of right-wing evil-hacker intent on purging wikipedia of all anti-guiliani literature :-) ? --Bfigura (talk) 04:11, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Stellar. It drives me nuts when I make a mess by mistakenly deleting something important. (Seriously, don't patrol new pages for too long, you start to get really trigger-happy after a while :) Must be something to do with seeing 20 articles an hour dedicated to the words 'penis' or 'poo'. --Bfigura (talk) 04:14, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Probably not without reason. I don't think hackers are allowed to own macs and read the HuffingtonPost or Talking Points Memo. And thanks. When I'm not bone-headedly deleting things, I like to try and be constructive :) --Bfigura (talk) 04:18, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Speaking of which, since my OCD seems to be acting up, I'm going to consolidate this whole discussion into one big section on my talk page, then head to bed. Happy editing. --Bfigura (talk) 04:21, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Dollar

I finally got around to looking at that article. It does seem to have rather bad POV issues. I tried to fix some of them, but I think there's too much inertia to do much. (And there's no way it's AfD-able, so clean up is the best option I think). Cheers, --Bfigura (talk) 20:44, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

You still don't understand

The "civil war" is Iraqi insurgency - Iraqis are killing mostly each other, by thousands, in the name of politics (their government, party, militia or insurgent group).

What you think is "another" war is not a war - it is religious strife, it is terrorism and pogroms for the sake of religious hate and only this, perpetuated by a shadowy factions with no clear leaders other than these of so-called al-Qaeda in Iraq (and AQI takes part in the insurgency, too, which is a real "war in the war", or maybe "war after war" if you count the foreign invasion and what came after). --HanzoHattori 18:18, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Giuliani

Hey bud, didn't mean to sound personal or offend. I'm not sure what you're driving at there, that Giuliani misspoke or misunderstood or lied about WTC explosion. I got the impression the text was taking his words out of context to allege some sort of conspiracy. For instance, by highlighting his statement "I didn't know the towers would fall", from what you have there, he could have said that he didn't know in 1985 that the towers would fall in 2001. Presumably, he said it after, but you've not included that context.

I really don't know if you intended some sort of far-reaching allegation, or if something's unclear in there. This seems to be a minority view you've asserted here. Anyway, I won't touch the paras again, since you insist.

Cheers,DBaba 00:29, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Haha, yes, you are completely correct. But I'm not sure, what are you saying about Giuliani? That he knew the WTC would collapse, only he occassionally lied about it? I'm out of the loop! Seriously though, I'm not editing anything, I figure if my impression is valid someone else will act on it! Good to meet you, Cheers!DBaba 04:45, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I've acted on it. And I did mean to be uncivil; your (Dogru144) edits were approaching Siegenthaler controversy territory, and I have no tolerance for that. If you'd just spent a little time researching this claim of inconsistency instead of just regurgitating every piece of anti-Guiliani venom you could find, you'd have realized the claim is bogus. (If you want to discuss the substance of this, do it on Talk:Rudy Giuliani.) Wasted Time R 11:40, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Hey bud, it's creepy to see you talking about me.[12][13][14] I've been very friendly! That sort of behavior, beyond being unjustified, is like confessing to the world that there's some sort of tragic imbalance in you. You'd do better to be more aware of yourself! If you're attacking me like that, putting in time like that to go after me, I can't even imagine how much of your life must be squandered in petty squabbling. I'm not your enemy, and I'm not going to be; your problems begin and end with you.DBaba 03:42, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello! I saw that you added some additional criticism to the already un-neutral Giuliani controversies page. I and other editors are working hard to make the page less slanted so I'd appreciate if any additional criticisms you want to add are first discussed on the talk page. And I promise you that I won't object to reasonable additions, we're just trying not to take one step forward and two steps back. You might also consider helping us out in our efforts to make the article more neutral because I'm sure you want for that NPOV tag to come off as soon as it can--just like we do. Thanks!|3 E |_ |_ 0 VV E |) 00:41, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I noticed you reverted this edit regarding Global Warming. I'm not sure how POV it is (as you stated in your summary). The current statement means very little "Giuliani believes the planet is indeed warming up." Just about everyone believes the planet is warming up. The debate is over if he believes it is due to man and how serious the issue is. These two points need to be covered for the paragraph to be of any value. I believe the anon editor was trying to address the second statement. If it is POV please reword it, but if the information is accurate - please include it. I mentioned these points on the talk page. Rudy Crew

Hi. I am asking an administrator to delete the page Rudy Crew because I can't rename Rudolph Crew "Rudy Crew" while Wikipedia already has a page called "Rudy Crew". It's simply an administrative task. Within a few hours, somebody will delete Rudy Crew, I'll move (rename) Rudolph Crew to "Rudy Crew", and Rudolph Crew will redirect users to Rudy Crew (the opposite of what it does now). Don't worry. The article itself isn't going to be deleted. — Malik Shabazz (Talk | contribs) 23:31, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi. You could cut and paste everything from the article and from the Talk page, but it's strongly discouraged because when you do that you lose the "edit history". That's why I'm trying to "rename" (move) the article. Like I said, no need to worry. — Malik Shabazz (Talk | contribs) 23:46, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Rudy Crew

Hi. I'll take a look at the article, but please read Wikipedia:Canvassing. It's okay if you ask people to read an article and comment at the AfD, but please don't ask them to voice a specific opinion ("help defend"). Thanks. — Malik Shabazz (Talk | contribs) 03:02, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know about the speedy deletion tag-- I wasn't aware that Crew had been given an article, but it was appropriate. I'm glad to see that I wasn't needed for the article to be kept!--Gloriamarie 01:25, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello Dogtru144. I read that TRFA gave you and other hard working Wikipedians considerable stress at the article Woman. He was a sockpuppet of the banned vandal and pov-pusher User:Haham hanuka. He has just been blocked. Please let me know if you spot him under a new identity and I will take it from there. gidonb 00:59, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

No IPs???

I am very disturbed by this comment of yours. There is almost no forum on Wikipedia that is not open to IPs and newly-registered users. To dismiss an IP-contributor on this basis is uncivil and in stark contrast to Wikipedia policies.

I suggest you take the time to read and understand the following pages:

Thanks. - Che Nuevara 18:04, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Are you not familiar with sites/ article pages closed to new or unregistered users? Are you not aware of the exhortations of people to become full-fledged users. A civil society requires a measure of acknowledgement of one's identity. Please address your comments to the topic page, not to my user page. Dogru144 23:54, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
No, your talk page is the place to address my concerns, because my concerns are about your treatment of another user, not about the article in question.
I am aware that there are a few things (I said "almost no" above) that are not open to IPs, namely RfA, AOR, and the like. But we welcome IPs at AfD, RfC, and especially on talk pages. This is especially true on semi-protected pages -- although IPs are encouraged to register so that they can edit semi-protected pages, those who do not wish to register are encouraged to use talk pages to help contribute to those articles.
WP:CON says nothing about anonymous IPs, nor is there an admonition of IPs on WP:TALK. WP:ACCOUNT specifically says the following: You do not have to log in even to edit articles on Wikipedia — just about anyone can edit almost any article at any given time, even without logging in, and many long-time contributors do not log in.
There are scores, possibly hundreds of good-faith positive contributors who edit with their anonymous IPs. Analyses done by Wikipedia contributors have determined that the majority of IP contributions are positive contributions, and the supermajority are in good faith. To say this:
This forum is for the wikipedia community. Those signing from anonymous IP addresses have little legitimacy in our community / this dialoague.
is not at all appropriate, as it is uncivil and, frankly, incorrect. Did you read the foundation issues I linked to you? -- Anonymous IPs are, according to Jimbo and the Foundation, specifically included in the community. - Che Nuevara 10:55, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!

I appreciate the Barnstar. The next twelve months should be quite an entertaining time for those of us (liberal and conservative) who edit U.S. political articles on Wikipedia. JamesMLane t c 07:04, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Giuliani controversies

Please discuss general principles on Talk:Controversies of Rudy Giuliani. Do you think there should be a controversies page, or do you think the controversies should be integrated into the mainline texts of the various Giuliani articles? Wasted Time R 03:57, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Dogru, I noticed that you voted twice (1st !vote 2nd !vote) over at the AfD for Giuliani controversies. As each editor only a gets a single !vote in these things, I was about to strike one of yours, but then I though maybe I should bring this to your attention and ask you to rectify the situation yourself. No big deal, but I really think that you ought to strike or remove one of your votes. Yilloslime (t) 16:09, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

This article was marked for deletion per WP:CSD. There is no assertion of notability, nor any proof of it. However, you're free to contest the deletion if you think there are independent reliable sources that confirm the subject's notability. Also, please remember to assume good faith rather than asserting that I have a 'POV'. Best, --Bfigura (talk) 23:06, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

POV deletion of articles by User:Bfigura

User:Bfigura has moved to delete The REAL Rudy on Robert Greenwald's viral video immediately upon its posting. The move to delete the article was made with no justification on my talk page or on the talk page of the article.

PROF0OUND NOTABILITY'

The {therealrudy.com} web site is politically significant. There are hundreds of google accessible hits as the result of the google search for it.

  • The videos are noted on news sites as diverse as those produced by commondreams on the left, and Fox and Cyber News Service on the right.

The move to delete the article is probably politically motivated, as it is inconsistent with the survival of other viral videos. Note that there is existing commercially motivated material, such as the Ron Paul Dollar, promoted on the wikipedia page for Liberty Dollar. Yet, this has not been deleted. Dogru144 23:27, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Examples of other viral videos that have not been deleted

The above is an example of a viral video that has not been deleted. Dogru144 23:27, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Please note that WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not generally considered to be a valid argument. Further, if you have references from mainstream sources that discuss the website in a substantial (ie, not passing) way, please add them to the article. Otherwise, per WP:WEB, deletion is perfectly valid. Also, you were notified of the deletion tag's placement (although notification, while nice, is not strictly required under the speedy deletion policy). Please see this section of your talk page for the notice of tagging. Also, please WP:AGF --Bfigura (talk) 23:33, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Dogru144. Regarding this article, there is a reference (I believe to establish notability) pointing to http://news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20070904/cm_thenation/45229547 but I get a yahoo error when I try to follow it. Is there a typo in there somewhere? If you know where the real page is, (I have no clue) you may want to correct the link so that it doesn't get deleted. Thanks, Epthorn (talk) 06:31, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

(copied from my talk page)
Hi; I got your note on "The REAL Rudy" and your yahoo search. Google is more reliable and more precise. So, my first recommendation would be to first look ath those searches. I entered <real rudy> and got many results. Dogru144 (talk) 19:13, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
I wasn't doing a search for numbers- it doesn't matter how many 'google hits' there are. I was saying that the link used in the article was dead, and no longer linked to a real page. I have found the original blog entry, however, and corrected the link. This might not stand for notability by itself (the only reason those other viral videos are on WP are because they were covered in journals, newspapers and in the news, not just blogs). But anyway, yeah, the link's working now so... nevermind. Epthorn (talk) 14:37, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Re: Canal in Israel?

I am not aware of a canal between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River watershed ever having existed, though such a canal has been proposed for the future. The Romans built a few aqueducts in Israel when it was part of the Roman Empire in the first centuries of the Common Era. The most well-known of these is Caesarea Maritima (see the photo in Caesarea and also List of aqueducts in the Roman Empire. Shalom (HelloPeace) 05:36, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

If it were true that there was a natural waterway connecting the two systems, I would expect to have seen a mention of that in Dead Sea canal, but it's not there, and not in the Hebrew version either. Shalom (HelloPeace) 05:44, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Some reasonable people can disagree whether it's appropriate to start naming successors. Another editor removed your edit regarding who's his successor, based on the fact that it's too soon. Happy editing! Bearian (talk) 23:23, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: The Harvard Coop

Hi Dogru144... Glad you were so impressed by the Harvard Coop. But why are you mentioning this to me, of all Wikipedians? I haven't been in the Boston area in years, and if I wanted to see the Harvard Coop myself I don't know if I would even be allowed in, as I have no connection with Harvard. Are you mixing me up with some other Wikipedian? Regards, Alan W (talk) 01:26, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

I figured it must be some kind of mistake, or else you had just gone completely off your rocker. :-) Well, no problem. Regards, Alan W (talk) 03:35, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Anyway, he's back: see edit to Nadler article and edit to Glick article. You're invited to join me again in the utterly boring but necessary work of patrolling these articles. Re: Sen. thesis

In Hillary Rodham Clinton:

Rodham returned to Wellesley, and wrote her senior thesis about the tactics of radical community organizer Saul Alinsky under Professor Schechter (which, years later while she was First Lady, was suppressed at White House request and became the subject of speculation).[1]

The linked-to article under "was suppressed at ..." is Hillary Rodham senior thesis, which I created last July when the controversies article was dismantled. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:17, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
