AfD, deletion and before

Hi! I was looking at AfD's and I'm really glad you raised some questions on Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Stephanie_Powell_Watts about notability and WP:Before. I'm very frustrated with the tone that goes on in AfD's. I see a lot of editors not bothering with WP:Before and I too, wonder, what's the point?

Personally, I think they hope to sweep an article away before anyone who has time to look into something can vote on it. It's easy to slap a tag on something for delete, harder to figure out if it's truly notable first. I think it's part of the Wiki bias: if the article is about a woman, foreign person or minority, there is an implicit assumption that they aren't notable. This is especially troubling with people who have articles and the sources are in print or in another language altogether.

Another frustrating thing can be seen here Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Hitomi_Tanaka, though I do think the editor isn't a sexist person at all and was playing, it was the wrong venue to joke around at.

Sometimes I think the best way to fight the trend of slapping AfD's is to add the sources and then pointedly ask the nominator what on earth were they thinking? Why didn't they do due diligence? If enough of us do this, we can counter the attitude of "I can delete whatever I want." If people know we are watching, it will help.

Anyway, that's my two cents, which won't buy you anything (especially a cup of good coffee!) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 14:24, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Betty Holberton.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Betty Holberton.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:11, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Wiki conference and editors

Hi! Well, regarding what you posted on my talk page, I understand your frustration with things. I hate seeing new editors made to feel unwelcome. The names of people constantly doing AfD is always the same. My frustration is that none seem to do WP:Before and the ones who think they do don't seem to have database access and only Google basic search skills. Editors be saying not notable, no references when a good search turns up plenty. I can't prove bias against women and non white folks, but it seems like it's there.

I wish I could go to the conference. I'm helping to open a Makerspace at my library that weekend. :)

I just felt happy to see someone else who was expressing many of my own feelings. I felt less alone in AfD land. I like contributing to Wiki and your own passion for defending articles struck a good nerve.

Btw, are you on the WikiProject Women in Red? If not, you might like it. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 04:18, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

Nomination of Opal Tometi for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Opal Tometi is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Opal Tometi until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.--JudgeJason (talk) 14:16, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

why have I never noticed your work?

Probably because it's both excellent and unpretentious. I tend to focus on problem areas these days, and your work does not fall into any of them. (I have some questions about he notability of some of the Indian scientists, because their citation records are not impressive on a world scale, which is the scale used in WP:PROF, but we cna discuss this later. But even so, they're short sensible articles as compared to some of the promotional illiterate work in that area)

I greatly deplore the attacks on you, which are in my opinions signs of what I can only call COI paranoia. It's a side effect of the necessary great importance there now is in removing coi, and it probably is unavoidable, but you;re is a particularly start example because it's so easy to tell the difference--nothing is even borderline.) Please do not be angry about your experience--It will be very useful as a counterexample.

If you're going to Washington, I'll see you there, but if you want to talk first, please send me an email and suggest a time. I want to explain to ou the various paralllel lines of approach to the problem of COI, so you'll know what's happenning. DGG ( talk ) 08:14, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

here's a suggested course of action: invoke DGG deletion training, and NPP training, and civility training and enforcement. if we had some librarian ethics around here, more work would get done. a sustained campaign will be necessary to enforce "safe space" asshole-free zone, against the "free speech" troll-enablers. i'll bet you would get serious support at wikionference usa, but you have to get consensus at arbcom. put in for a idea-lab. Duckduckstop (talk) 18:25, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
here would be some evidence of COI paranoia, i.e. blocking for socking asking questions at teahouse Wikipedia_talk:Teahouse#Sockpuppetry. Duckduckstop (talk) 18:14, 2 October 2015 (UTC) (seems they were actually socks, with very unimaginative username variations.) DGG ( talk ) 02:36, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
I hate to disillusion you, but not only is arb com very unlikely to every initiate anything, but it will not even commit itself to support anything. So I thought before I joined, but now I know it. Its only practical function is to throw out long-established well-liked trolls whom ani refuses to deal with. DGG ( talk ) 02:36, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
and that is why you do not see me: not interested in dysfunctional processes. apparantly there is a call to librarians to edit [2]; it could be a change in civility enforcement, but it would require some top cover, from arbcom, which i have yet to see.
here another stellar notability judgement;[3] might come up at AfC redesign at wikiconference usa.[4]. Duckduckstop (talk) 16:27, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

Done I added the external links and ISBN numbers from the current article into the draft. Personally I don't like the ISBN numbers, but won't argue over it. Proposed deletion of Nurungul Tohti

The article Nurungul Tohti has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Some notability is existing, but it's very shaky

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Margaret Fletcher, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.quickiwiki.com/en/Margaret_Fletcher.

It is possible that the bot was mistaken and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.) CorenSearchBot (talk) 21:17, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

when you cite a mirror site "quickwiki" you tend to undermine the credibility of your bot. Duckduckstop (talk) 21:20, 27 December 2015 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Margaret Fletcher requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.quickiwiki.com/en/Margaret_Fletcher. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Fatima Massaquoi has been nominated for Did You Know

Catalan Culture Challenge 2016 edition

I apologize if this message is not in your language. Please help translate it.

From February 21 to March 6 we organise the 2nd edition of Catalan Culture Challenge, a Wikipedia editing contest in which victory will go to those who start or improve the greatest number of articles about 11 key figures of Catalan culture. You can take part by creating or expanding articles on these people in your native language (or any other one you speak). It would be lovely to have you on board again. :-)

We look forward to seeing you!

Ways to improve Public Art of Barcelona

Hi, I'm Peter SamFan. Duckduckstop, thanks for creating Public Art of Barcelona!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. The article you created, Public Art of Barcelona, needs copyediting. Otherwise, I think it is good.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Peter Sam Fan | talk 19:51, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
