St. Helens Central (GCR) Railway Station - Photos

Hi EP111, I received a Wiki e-mail on 5th Feb about the above site which included a request for images. I submitted two of these, the first of the frontage of the station on its opening day in 1900 and the second of a local service passenger train at the platform which was probably taken around 1950. It has not been possible to ascertain the authorship of either, but it is generally thought that most of these types of local St. Helens photos are archived in the Local History section of St. Helens Borough Central Public Library and when I registered the photos on Wiki stated that as the source.

A few days later I was surprised to receive another e-mail, this time from a Stefan2 (apparently from Sweden) telling me that I needed permission for the second (1950) photo (why not for both of them I don't know) and threatening to remove it after 15th Feb. I investigated the photo with the Local History Archive staff today (I couldn't do so immediately as due to local government cutbacks they only now operate 3 days per week ) They are going to look into the provenance of it but as it is archived in the basement of the library will require some time to check out. They did not seem particularly worried about permission, provided of course they can locate it in the first place. Indeed many similar 'old' St. Helens photos are featured in regular local newspaper features and framed ones in many St. Helens homes and businesses - even local supermarkets !

It is extremely difficult to determine the origins of some of these old railway photos - even local railway authors (Bob Pixton ) admit this. The photo is also on another St. Helens website, St. Helens Connect, and they've not had any success in tracing that either. Considering Wiki made a request for photos for the St. Helens GCR Station page and I registered/uploaded them with Wiki, it is then rather galling to be subjected to such draconian one-size-fits-all Wiki contribution criteria, particularly for what is designated by Wiki as low importance.

Doesn't really encourage one to submit further related photos to the page of this type, does it - I would warrant the poor time-confined Archive Staff at St. Helens Central Library would get pretty fed up at being constantly asked for 'permissions'?

I'd welcome your comments

Cheers Paul Gaskell Paul Gaskell (talk) 01:35, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello Paul, Stefan2 is likely correct in stating that only the one image is allowed for public domain use. Copyright would extend to 70 years, if the author is unknown. This would mean that the 1950 image would still be in copyright. The 1950 image will have to wait until 2020, before it becomes eligible for public domain use. See the list of countries' copyright lengths and scroll down to the United Kingdom entry in the second column, for details. That's as far as I can help, I'm afraid. A bit of advice

Hi. I notice that you take an interest in Tidying punctuation & grammar. Perhaps you could stop using the "&" symbol in the text of articles then? Also (this is just my opinion), I think you use rather too many commas, for instance:

The name Birkenhead is possibly from the Old English bircen meaning birch tree, of which there were many, once growing, on the headland which jutted into the river, at Woodside.

This could be replaced with:

The name Birkenhead is possibly from the Old English bircen, meaning birch tree, of which there were once many growing on the headland which jutted into the river at Woodside.

Also, I notice you've been having trouble with the user contributing from IP addresses in the 84.9.xxx.xxx and 87.75.xxx.xxx range. Don't worry too much about him: this is the banned User:Irate, who frequently wreaks havoc with Merseyside area articles.

Feel free to ignore this advice. But keep up the good work with the Wirral articles! --RFBailey 10:06, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

EP111 says: the '&' symbol is acceptable as a replacement in use for 'and'. '&' seems to be the preferred method in textbooks (of which Wiki is a version!). Commas will only be placed in order to split a sentence into a logical manner. I hope this helps! Thank you for your help & encouragement.

TMD Stubs?

Your contributions are welcomed.

However, in the case of some of the stubs they are a bit short, perhaps you could expand on the history of some of the depots?

Altertnivly, combine them into a table on something like Rail TMD's (UK)?

Also you may be interested in the Uk Railways Wiki on Wikia...

ShakespeareFan00 15:29, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

EP111 says: Thanks ShakespeareFan. I will expand on the stubs. I will, fully, incorporate the section into British Rail, when I have completed & expanded on the list of stubs.

More advice

Hello again. First, a specific point: if you want to add the list of stations on Merseyside to articles like you did at Upton railway station, you can now do it by adding the template {{Merseyside railway stations}}, rather than pasting in all of the source code.

Second, please use the Edit summary box (underneath the edit box, just above the "Save page" button) when you edit a page. This enable people to look at the page history or their watchlist to get an idea of what you've done to a page without having to examine it in detail. Have a look at this to get an idea of what you should write. --RFBailey 08:06, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

EP111 says: Both have been noted, thanks RF.

Jean-Michel Jarre

Would i be correct in assuming that you're also a JMJ fan from Merseyside (like myself)? My ongoing project is to slowly add more info to pages related to him as i think they're a bit lacking. I'm currently trying to find info on chart positions. Thanks for the help in the articles so far. Modulus86 19:24, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

EP111 says: I'm not too sure about his chart positions, though I'll help improve the references to his synthesizers.

Well, I really appreciate your work on restructuring synthesizers category, but, generally, it has several flaws and concepts that are traditionally implemented using different methods in Wikipedia.

Namely:

  1. No point moving synthesizer types to "*" sort key. If you want them all to stand distinct, we shall create Category:Synthesizers by type, and re-parent synthesizer types there.
  2. If we need lots of synthesizer by manufacturers categories, they all should be parented in distinct Category:Synthesizers by manufacturer.
  3. According to Wikipedia style guide, proper category title capitalization should look like "Hartmann synthesizers", not "Hartmann Synthesizers".
  4. Categories such as Category:MIDI standards, or Category:Sound synthesis types should be on the same level and with normal sort keys (i.e., not "main article", or "main category" with "*"), as "Synthesizers by type" and "Synthesizers by manufacturer".

You seem to use some sort of automated edit tool? Which one, if that isn't a secret?

--GreyCat 06:47, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

GreyCat, your points are noted. Thanks for the advice. I'll try to get the category tidied up, as you see fit, according to Wiki. I'm sure we both agree that this is a collection of articles which can be developed - whatever the final choice of category titles! n.b. The only automated edit tool, which I use, is Find/Replace in MS Notepad. EP111 12:07, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

ps. All synths have now been moved to Category:Synthesizers by manufacturer as a subcategory of Category:Synthesizers which has, also, been tidied. I'll sort out the '(Manufacturer) Synthesizers' capitalisation problem when I have a little more time! For now, the whole should be a little more acceptable. Hope this helps! Wallasey

Thanks for the advice and the additions of lat/long co-ords and map to this article's infobox. Now it correlates better with the Birkenhead article. Should infoboxes be added to other large(ish) places in Wirral too? Suppose it's a matter of personal opinion. Strongly agree with your statement (on your user page) about Wirral's relevance to Cheshire. Cheers. Snowy 1973 16:06, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. In answer to your question; yes, I think so. My intention was that infoboxes for Heswall, West Kirby, Hoylake, Bebington, Upton, Moreton, etc. would help the category in starting to fit together, better, especially with regard to census & mapping/location data. re: Wirral & Cheshire. A historical relevance; I suppose we have to move with the times! :D

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Eastleigh TMD, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a search with the contents of York Leeman Road DMUD, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: York Leeman Road depot. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. MadmanBot (talk) 14:54, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

York DMUD

Please use page move proceedures to move pages. Wikipedia:Moving a page. Also please note the use of 'common names' in naming articles, and the recommedation to use "commonly recognizable names" Wikipedia:Article titles.Prof.Haddock (talk) 16:18, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give York Leeman Road depot a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into York Leeman Road DMUD. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut-and-paste-move repair holding pen. Thank you. New Brighton Tower

Hi EP111

I thought I'd drop you a line about your re-assessment of New Brighton Tower. Assessment is a funny thing on Wikipedia, most levels can be assessed by just one person. However, there's a couple (Good articles and Featured articles) which need a slightly more formal assessment process, they need to me global agreed standards. New Brighton Tower went though the assessment process for "Good Article", which it passed. It might be that it no longer should include that, but if that's the case, it needs to go through the Good article reassessment process. I hope that makes sense, but if not, let me know. WormTT(talk) 13:15, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Worm That Turned, I appreciate the need for the higher qualities of article to have a more formal assessment, preferably by a group of several qualified assessors. Personally, I would request external assessment of any article nominated for a B-rating, or higher. Thanks. EP111 (talk) 13:38, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
No worries, Thanks for spending a bit of time getting through the old requests. We need more people willing to get down and do assessments, and we've needed that as long as I can remember being on the encyclopedia. WormTT(talk) 13:40, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Carmarthenshire, England

Hi, I see you recently visited this page - East Carmarthenshire (UK Parliament constituency) and Assessed it for WikiProject England. I admit to knowing little about projects and assessments on wikipedia but I do know that Carmarthenshire doesn't have much to do with England, so your desire to include it in WikiProject England strikes me a little odd. Perhaps this is just a mistake, if not i would be intrigued to know your thought process. Graemp (talk) 14:08, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello Graemp, the page was already listed as part of Wikiproject England. I assessed the article based on quality and importance, only. Regards, EP111 (talk) 14:15, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

Bearsden

Thanks for taking the trouble to look over the Bearsden article. Is it really still a "Start" class article? Perhaps you could leave some advice on the article talk page to help bring it up to standard. Thanks. Wikiwayman (talk) 16:31, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello Wikiwayman, that's my mistake. You are correct, it is at least a C-class article (with so many references, it could well be higher, but that'll require further assessment from a group of people), I'll adjust it accordingly. I've been going through the backlog for the WikiProject and was mainly filling in the missing bits, rather than checking to see if it had been particularly improved. Thanks for the pointer. If you notice any similar discrepancies, then please feel free to correct them. Regards, EP111 (talk) 17:31, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Cities

Hi EP111, Pamukkale, Denizli which you have added to WP Project Cities is not an independent settlement. It is a part of a city (Denizli) with a municipality of its own. I am not sure if it can be included in the Cities project. Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 21:09, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Small captions

Hi, on the small captions you quote London as the defining example for this but that article uses {{infobox settlement}} which has small text coded into it for captions. It was removed as a requirement from {{infobox UK place}} in 2012 because of concerns over accessibility with it been made double small because of style sheet setup with that infobox. I remember updating the documentation as there was no objects to its removal. The tags have been slowly removed from articles since then. Keith D (talk) 03:13, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello Keith D, would it be possible to recode {{infobox UK place}} to allow similar formatting to {{infobox settlement}}, without causing the previous problem, so that there is conformity of presentation across all populated UK places, with London being the example for all others to follow? It's a messy, non-standard presentation, between a collection of similar articles, otherwise. Regards, EP111 (talk) 03:33, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
I am sure it could be done but would need someone more familiar with infoboxes to do this. May be because of the accessibility concerns that was raised then the removal of small from {{Infobox settlement}} should be considered more appropriate. Keith D (talk) 18:35, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
I would prefer to be with the opinion that if the rest of the world hasn't raised any concerns about the present format of infobox settlement which, I expect, is a much more widely-used template, then it's not a problem (consensus?). Indeed London uses infobox settlement. Infobox UK place may, therefore, be surplus to requirements and an unnecessary fork. EP111 (talk) 18:52, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
