Neglected diseases
Anti-parasitic drugs being distributed in Côte d'Ivoire
What's a Neglected Disease?, ScienceSource video

To grasp the nettle, there are rare diseases, there are tropical diseases and then there are "neglected diseases". Evidently a rare enough disease is likely to be neglected, but neglected disease these days means a disease not rare, but tropical, and most often infectious or parasitic. Rare diseases as a group are dominated, in contrast, by genetic diseases.

A major aspect of neglect is found in tracking drug discovery. Orphan drugs are those developed to treat rare diseases (rare enough not to have market-driven research), but there is some overlap in practice with the WHO's neglected diseases, where snakebite, a "neglected public health issue", is on the list.

From an encyclopedic point of view, lack of research also may mean lack of high-quality references: the core medical literature differs from primary research, since it operates by aggregating trials. This bibliographic deficit clearly hinders Wikipedia's mission. The ScienceSource project is currently addressing this issue, on Wikidata. Its Wikidata focus list at WD:SSFL is trying to ensure that neglect does not turn into bias in its selection of science papers.

Michael Spink Reversal

Wednesday 05/09/18

Dear Edward,

I am getting in touch on behalf of our client Michael Spink at SPINK Property with regards to this Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Spink

Michael Spink is Founder and CEO of SPINK Property, a London-based architectural firm https://www.spinkproperty.co.uk/

We handle the communications for the company and as part of our remit we need to update the existing Michael Spink page on Wikipedia.

On Thursday the 30/8 we edited/updated the existing page with factual additions on Michael himself and his company, and unfortunately our additions and amendments were removed and we received the following message from you. Reverted to revision 834425533 by KolbertBot (talk): Michael Spink is independently notable. If you want to, please start Spink as a separate article. (TW))

We need to update the existing page, rather than create another page for the company SPINK, as it will effectively become confusing to have two pages. Spink is also a disambiguation page, so it would be very confusing for wiki visitors to differentiate. Please could you let us know what the next steps are as we are keen to update the existing page as submitted last week.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

Alex Herlihy Account Executive LUCHFORD

Conradq (talk) 15:13, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Thank you Conradq, The normal process is that paid editors and those with a conflict of interest propose relatively small discreet changes to the article on its talkpage. In this case, Talk:Michael Spink. Such changes should reflect a neutral point of view (WP:NPOV) and be properly sourced citing reliable sources (WP:RS. Please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for more guidance. I have copied your message and my response to Talk:Michael Spink, and any further discussion should be on that page. Asking for help with Point72 Asset Management

Hello, User:Edwardx. I would like to ask you for help with edits on an article where I have a COI. I work for Point72 Asset Management. I've made edits in the past to the article, but that was more than two years ago and the article needs to be updated.

I believe that the rules around COI editing have been strengthened since then, which is why I am reaching out for help. I see that you have edited the article, and others like it. Would you be willing to review the updates for the article and, if you agree that they improve the article, either make the updates or give me the go-ahead to make them? Here they are, with the updates highlighted in italics and including citations to support the edits:

Point72 Asset Management, L.P., is an American hedge fund managing the assets of its founder, Steven A. Cohen, and eligible employees. SAC Capital Advisors was founded in 1992 and converted its investment operations to the Point72 Asset Management family office in 2014.[4] In 2018, the firm reopened to external investors after a two-year ban and began accepting outside capital.[1] As of 2018, Point72 employed approximately 1,200 people. The firm's long/short investment divisions are Point72 Asset Management and EverPoint Asset Management. Cubist Systematic Strategies is its quantitative investing business. Point72 also operated a big data unit, Aperio, which was folded into its Market Intelligence team in 2018. [2] Point72 has its main office in Stamford, Connecticut and there are several satellite offices around the world.[7]

History

[First two paragraphs are fine as is]

In August 2014, founder Steven Cohen replaced many of the management personnel who had operated SAC. Among the changes, he named a new president of Point72, Douglas D. Haynes, and a new chief operating officer, former IBM executive Timothy Shaughnessy.[15][16] Haynes retired in March 2018 and was replaced as president by Cohen.[3]

[last two paragraphs are fine as is]

Thank you in advance for considering my request. AlexReads (talk) 20:14, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Edwardx, wanted to let you know I went ahead and made several factual updates to the Point72 Asset Management article. I would greatly appreciate it if you would review them when you have time and let me know if you approve. I have a few more edits to make and would like to know if you would be able to review them for me.AlexReads (talk) 20:32, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

DYK articles

Hi, I notice you have removed links to footballer from two of my recent DYKs citing WP:OVERLINK. Personally I have no issue with it but, when I started nominating football articles, a discussion was held on the DYK talk page regarding including these links to give a clear indication to the reader on the sport the subject participates in as Football has different meanings around the world. So should I add these back in or do you feel like you would take this further? Kosack (talk) 12:31, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Shiv Pande

On 14 September 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Shiv Pande, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Edwardx, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

The science publishing landscape

In an ideal world ... no, bear with your editor for just a minute ... there would be a format for scientific publishing online that was as much a standard as SI units are for the content. Likewise cataloguing publications would not be onerous, because part of the process would be to generate uniform metadata. Without claiming it could be the mythical free lunch, it might be reasonably be argued that sandwiches can be packaged much alike and have barcodes, whatever the fillings.

The best on offer, to stretch the metaphor, is the meal kit option, in the form of XML. Where scientific papers are delivered as XML downloads, you get all the ingredients ready to cook. But have to prepare the actual meal of slow food yourself. See Scholarly HTML for a recent pass at heading off XML with HTML, in other words in the native language of the Web.

The argument from real life is a traditional mixture of frictional forces, vested interests, and the classic irony of the principle of unripe time. On the other hand, discoverability actually diminishes with the prolific progress of science publishing. No, it really doesn't scale. Wikimedia as movement can do something in such cases. We know from open access, we grok the Web, we have our own horse in the HTML race, we have Wikidata and WikiJournal, and we have the chops to act.
