John Caudwell page re: your message to me

Hi Edward - you messaged me that I cannot update John Caudwell's page because I work for him. Please can you advise how I can make updates? There are several factual inaccuracies and key omissions. I don't want to put PR stuff in, just accurate information, including about his personal life (eg the date of his son's birth).

I have submitted to John's Talk page, as you suggested, for one of the worst inaccuracies which is frequently cited in media interviews by journalists using Wiki as a source. This causes huge and ongoing problems.

I am not a Wiki specialist. How can I best get these changes made and kept? Can I send you a list of them for you to consider?

Thanks in advance

TerriPaddockJC (talk) 09:58, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, TerriPaddockJC. For a start, you need to liaise with your colleague Bensutcliffe78, who posted to Talk:John Caudwell after you (both yesterday). Everything you need to do is set out in my message to you above. I am an unpaid volunteer, so am unable to provide you with further guidance. I have copied your message to me (and this reply) to your talkpage. Please continue this discussion there or even better at Talk:John Caudwell. Edwardx (talk) 12:11, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Question about reversal

May I ask what the Wikipedia standard is when the person in the article uses neopronouns? I have seen in the version history another person said that the established precedent is that if a person's pronouns are uncommon, use the person's name instead. However I've looked through the gender identity section of the manual of style and in other articles talking about writing about these topics and I haven't seen anything talking about that. Maybe I've missed it?

I do understand why you reversed the edit since I guess it would be confusing and hard to read for the layman. I kind of assumed it'd be okay because it was already at the top of the page that Quasar uses xe/xem/xyr pronouns. Do you think you can clarify why you reversed the edit and tell me how to go about this in the future? --Nyla Smokeyface (talk) 02:07, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

Thank you Nyla Smokeyface. The relevant policies are MOS:IDENTITY and MOS:GENDERID. My understanding for articles such as Daniel Quasar is that we go with whatever recent reliable sources use, rather than whatever neopronouns the article subject may themselves use. After all, Wikipedia is a tertiary summary of what is written in (reliable) secondary sources, and we create biographies, not autobiographies. As far as I can determine in this case, reliable sources avoid using any pronouns, so this should be our approach. I will copy this thread to Talk:Daniel Quasar, as others may wish to contribute. reFill issue with olympics.com URLs

Hi Edwardx, just wanted to briefly make you aware that there's currently an issue with reFill that causes it to turn any olympics.com URL into a garbled mess. I've fixed the issue for Mikhail Astashov, but still wanted to make you aware of this. I already reported this problem in late July, but unfortunately, recent maintenance of the tool has been spotty – for example, it still inserts to this day the deprecated |dead-url= into articles. Anyway, thanks! AngryHarpytalk 05:59, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

If it helps, there is a template that can be used for Olympics.com profiles: Template:Olympics.com profile. If you just fill in the ID then it populates the rest of the citation for you. Joseph2302 (talk) 07:40, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you kindly, AngryHarpy and Joseph for your constructive comments. Edwardx (talk) 09:57, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Oliver Lam-Watson

More info needed re the medal. No reference to the event. It could have been any competition. Drams707 (talk) 14:23, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

The article, Oliver Lam-Watson, read "He won bronze in the Men's team épée in 2020", so I fail to see what the issue is. I have now linked "Men's team épée" to Wheelchair fencing at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.

I saw those edits, and then looked at that RfC, which strikes me as strange and flawed (and someone was editing the MOS along the way?). And its conclusion is "screw the MOS"? And the editor you were discussing this with quoted that RfC as substantiation? Ha, "Drivers represent teams and nations. Teams also represent nations."--they used that argument in cycling too, and it's absolute crap. That they put those flags on some TV channels means nothing. Same with articles on soccer teams, and no doubt other team sports. The result is, of course, that all those pages are completely unreadable with all those stupid icons. What kind of fetish is it? I ask you a favor

I see you are making a lot of pages of Paralympic athletes who have won a medal. But they are not just stubs, they are very inaccurate (use of notes without templates and often without links, no formatting). Could you please correct them? --Kasper2006 (talk) 05:07, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, Kasper2006. Agreed that many are rather perfunctory, although some of the issues have been created by others editing the stubs. As ReFill has not been working properly on olympics.com URLs, I have been leaving them bare, but am now filling in the "cite web" templates manually. Now, I am only creating articles at least as good as Maria Andrea Virgilio. Still stubby, but presentable, I hope. Edwardx (talk) 14:23, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Revert

Hi, you reverted my edit on Laschet to redirect to Armin Laschet, with the comment "fine before", ignoring my statement in the edit summary that all items are related topics to Armin Laschet.

As such, I see your revert as vandalism and reverted it; if you insist on keeping the disambiguation, please explain why. Thank you! LenaAvrelia (talk) 09:22, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your message, LenaAvrelia. However, per Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, the onus is really upon you to start a discussion, rather than reverting me. And describing my edit as "vandalism" is not constructive. Armin Laschet has had 124,298 pageviews over the past 30 days, Susanne Laschet 13,081, and Cabinet Laschet 548. So, simply redirecting Laschet to Armin Laschet is not helpful to our readers. Edwardx (talk) 10:25, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. Susanne Laschet has been subject to a successful AfD on the German wiki for lack of notability (to paraphrase the AfD: her notability is limited to being Armin Laschet's spouse and a single patronage) - given this, I think it's safe to say that Armin Laschet is the primary topic. The 5th bullet point in WP:POFR supports a redirect in this case. LenaAvrelia (talk) 11:34, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
What happens on de.wikipedia is of little relevance here. What you should have done is move Laschet to Laschet (surname) or Laschet (disambiguation), then redirect Laschet to Armin Laschet, along with a hatnote atop Armin Laschet. Edwardx (talk) 13:07, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
The only other article in a disambiguation page would be Susanne Laschet (there is precedent to not include cabinets in disambiguation pages). A hatnote to a spouse feels nonsensical, given Susanne Laschet is notable exclusively for being Armin Laschet's spouse. LenaAvrelia (talk) 20:35, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
I have created Laschet (surname) etc, as suggested above. Edwardx (talk) 12:14, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Well, the problem remains: it's a fancy hatnote to the politician's spouse. I don't see how confusion can arise, so shouldn't this fail WP:RELATED? LenaAvrelia (talk) 12:41, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Except that the problem was created by redirecting Laschet to Armin Laschet. Do you have a better solution? Edwardx (talk) 20:52, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Marc Worth

Edward unsure of how to get in touch with you. You reverted changes to Marc Worth page citing no evidence. Marc has indeed remarried, please revert your changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:E821:9900:3416:6A68:3521:F830 (talk) 13:58, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

Even if Marc Worth has remarried, you still need to follow basic Wikipedia policies, such as Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, Wikipedia:Citing sources, and Wikipedia:Reliable sources. And please do NOT remove cited content about his previous wife and his career, as you have done. I will see if there is a reliable source about a second marriage. Edwardx (talk) 15:57, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
I am unable to find anything about another marriage or wedding, or anything about Marc Worth in connection with anyone called "Kelly", just "Hilda", his first and seemingly only wife. I will copy this thread to Talk:Marc Worth, as that is the best place for it. Edwardx (talk) 16:03, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
I wonder if you could get in touch with you directly. My email is marc.worth@stylus.com. I don't really understand the protocols of Wikipedia but what I do know is that my ex wife - Hilda - wishes to be disassociated with me and my new wife Kelly, is distressed that I am "still married" to Hilda (according to Wiki). My marriage to Hilda was dissolved 3 years ago and I remarried Kelly on June 25th this yeasr — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.27.170.44 (talk) 09:21, 12 October 2021 (UTC)
Very sorry, but I am an unpaid volunteer. If you are Marc Worth and you have remarried, surely it must be possible for you to provide some evidence for this. Please re-read my earlier comments, and should you wish, continue this at Talk:Marc Worth, where I will now copy these last two comments. Edwardx (talk) 12:31, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Cadogan Lane

On 14 October 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cadogan Lane, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a flat on London's Cadogan Lane has been described as "one of the happiest turn-on centres there's ever been" due to experiments with LSD done there? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cadogan Lane. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Cadogan Lane), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/G. Philip Stephenson

Edward, I noticed you started an AfD for the G. Philip Stephenson page and I'm not sure how to contribute to that discussion chain: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/G._Philip_Stephenson

You mentioned this: "Struggling to find any independent in-depth coverage in reliable sources, either those in the article or elsewhere online." A google search for Philip Stephenson would give you access to independent coverage. There is another Philip Stephenson on Wikipedia, which is an entry for a contemporary baseball player, hence the differentiator was needed by adding the G initial. There are several articles linked on the Wikipedia page from reputable, independent sources, such as the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Financial Times, etc, as well as links to prestigious organizations, such as National Geographic Society and Ocean Exploration Trust where the subject serves as a board member, advisor, and/or donor.

Many other philanthropists have wikipedia pages. This one too is factual, accurate and sourced according to guidelines. When it first accepted the entry several years ago, Wikipedia said this: "This article is within the scope of WikiProject Biography, a collaborative effort to create, develop and organize Wikipedia's articles about people."

Should you feel that more or different links and sources need to be included please suggest appropriate edits or additions that you as an independent Wiki editor see as necessary. Deleting the page serves no purpose as it does not violate any terms of use. Would you please consider withdrawing your Afd? Thank you. Ebabau (talk) 21:47, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, Ebabau. As you have posted the same message on your talkpage, I have responded there. Edwardx (talk) 11:41, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Geni.com

I see you have reverted external links to Geni.com reasoning it's not a reliable source. That's exactly why the link is informed to the reader, under "external links" - so the reader themselves can make up their mind.

For famous people with Wikipedia articles, the family tree on geni is also completed. So it's wrong to say geni is unreliable for these people. Edits are also monitored by geni editors, chosen by geni, so not anyone can edit.

The family tree contains very much more information about the person than Wikipedia, as geni shows all relatives - many who also contributed significantly, and not only famous ones, as Wikipedia does.

Thank you, Ronny vika. First of all, you should post on my talkpage, not my userpage, and I have moved your post accordingly. Please read the entry at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources, which is as follows: "Geni.com is a genealogy site that is considered generally unreliable because it is an open wiki, which is a type of self-published source. Primary source documents from Geni.com may be usable under WP:BLPPRIMARY to support reliable secondary sources, but avoid interpreting them with original research." Nomination of Dr. Omar Rai for deletion

Hey Edwardx, I have worked on a few of the pages lately and have found this subject notable and hence created a wiki page 2 years back. Apart from this, created a few others but didn't see any issue so request your assistance if this subject needs additional references though all relevant and notable ref is added. The subject is a leading technocrat of his country and notable as per Wikipedia:Notability policy.

RufinaSmith (talk) 17:19, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, RufinaSmith. I note that you voted "keep" in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Omkar Rai, and as that was redirected to Software Technology Parks of India, you have recreated the article as Dr. Omkar Rai. Are you familiar with our Wikipedia:Conflict of interest policy? Can you confirm that you have not been involved in any conflict of interest or paid editing? Edwardx (talk) 17:28, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Hey Edwardx : Thanks, yes I do confirm that neither have I any conflict of interest nor I am doing any paid activity. I follow technology thought leaders from the country and have contributed to a few notable subjects earlier. The subject in discussion has good notability as I see quite a few notable print and web presence of this subject from IT Services domain. I would be keen if this article require more references and I will get this improved. Thanks. RufinaSmith (talk) 17:41, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Sándor Csányi (banker)

Hi Edward, I do not know how to get in touch with you. A reverted your edit on Sándor Csányi (banker)- I am his personal advisor - I am doing all changes upon his request - it is not advertising content just objective facts we out on Wikipedia. Please, write me on monikatoth@yahoo.com or tothmo@otpbank.hu and I am happy to provide you with proof of my status and that I act upon his personal requests. (Tothmona)

Thank you Tothmona. With regard to Sándor Csányi (banker), I will be reverting your changes, as they are not in accordance with several Wikipedia policies, see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, Wikipedia:Citing sources, and Wikipedia:Reliable sources. As you are a paid editor, you need to make a declaration in accordance with Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. Rather than editing Sándor Csányi (banker) directly, please suggest proposed changes at Talk:Sándor Csányi (banker); I will be copying your message and my reply there, which is where any discussion should continue. Edwardx (talk) 09:25, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi Edward, I have maid that declaration to Wikipedia - I do not know why it is not showing. AS I am editing on his behalf- how can I convince you to accept my changes? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tothmona (talkcontribs) 09:31, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Notice

The article Ado Campeol has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article shows no notability apart from being the co-inventor of tiramisu. Under WP:SINGLEEVENT, this article should be a redirect to tiramisu.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Intros

Howdy, FWIW, the vast majority of bios have the birthplace (and deathplace) mentioned in the intros 'next to' the birth/death dates. GoodDay (talk) 14:25, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

As I noted in my edit summary when (again) removing "London" from the first sentence of Richard Desmond, MOS:BIRTHPLACE is clear, "Birth and death places, if known, should be mentioned in the body of the article, and can appear in the lead if relevant to notability, but not in the opening brackets alongside the birth and death." Your view about the "vast majority" is at odds with my experience; I have edited many 1000s of biographies, and the vast majority are MOS compliant. Edwardx (talk) 14:36, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
Agreed, although I used to do it that way before I knew better. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:51, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
Some of my early edits are shocking. GoodDay has 378,897 edits. Edwardx (talk) 17:30, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
Well, I'll likely keep doing it my way per WP:IAR. Not gonna stress too much about it. GoodDay (talk) 20:45, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
IAR is really for the rare exception, it's not a licence to go your own way when there are agreed ways of doing things. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:53, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on United Kingdom parliamentary second jobs scandal requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. -- DeFacto (talk). 07:25, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello! In case you have ping notifications turned off, I'm hoping you can revisit this request to add the subject's current titles to the infobox (perhaps the "title" or "occupation" field). Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 14:39, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Have replied at Talk:Joe Gebbia. Edwardx (talk) 14:46, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for assessing the infobox request. If you have a moment to revisit the talk page, I've submitted a subsequent request to correct the article's text, which currently notes the subject's former role. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 14:43, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Jerry Jones

Literally everything I did to his page is backed by one policy or another. Infobox: WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE, Lede: MOS:FIRSTBIO, non-notable family members mentioned by name: WP:BLPNAME. Additionally, your blind revert of all my edits also added back the mention of him being named all-southwest conference when he played at Arkansas. He was never all-Southwest conference. I do not have to discuss BLP policy violations on the talkpage to remove them. Please do not revert these edits again without taking your own advice.--Rockchalk717 16:59, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
