DYK for 200 Madison Avenue

On 1 June 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 200 Madison Avenue, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/200 Madison Avenue. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 200 Madison Avenue), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. NYC subway layouts?

Hi Epic. I am a bit confused. Is there consensus to keep the subway layouts for NYC subway/LIRR stations? I remember adding a layout for Embarcadero BART/MUNI station and that got reverted because there was opposition to having layouts for every station.

What are the exact guidelines for these subway layouts? And if there is consensus against these subway layouts then should they just be removed? Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis 01:22, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

@Awesome Aasim, thanks for bringing this up. As far as I know, there is consensus against most station layouts except in particularly complex cases, but the NYC Subway is an exception. Even most LIRR stations do not have platform layouts anymore because the platform arrangement is so simple.
However, most NYC Subway stations (even seemingly simple ones) have complex service patterns. Often, two or three services use the same track at each station, and many services have different termini depending on time of day.
Furthermore, platform layouts often give important info about a service pattern and/or termini. Until recently, NYC did not display any termini in infoboxes, unlike stations of almost every other subway system in the world. In almost every other article about a rapid transit system, like BART, each service runs to the same termini no matter what time of day it is. Thus, these service patterns are easily handled by Module:Adjacent stations. But in NYC - just to give one example - the N train can run local in Manhattan, express in Manhattan, local in Brooklyn, or express in Brooklyn depending on whether it's a weekday/weekend and whether it's daytime or nighttime. Even the adjacent stations module cannot handle this - only the platform layouts will give an accurate depiction of each service's termini. That is part of the reason why these platform layouts have remained on NYC Subway articles for so long. – Epicgenius (talk) 02:31, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Platform layout templates

I was wondering, how come Template:NYCS Platform Layout IRT Lexington Avenue Line/Park Avenue South stations invokes Template:NYCS Platform Layout IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line/local/previous instead of the Lexington parameters being in their own template? Cards84664 05:32, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

I think it may have been part of {{NYCS Platform Layout IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line/local}} at one point. Thus, when the Lexington Ave template was split out later, it retained most of the code from the Broadway/7th Ave template. – Epicgenius (talk) 14:18, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Epicgenius, it's been almost two months, and the reviewer hasn't edited Wikipedia since writing that one-line comment that wasn't really a review on the review page. I think we have to consider it abandoned.

Would you prefer that I reset this so that it gets put back into the pool of GANs waiting for a review (eventually a GA2 page would be created when a reviewer came along), or request a second opinion in the hopes that someone takes it up from the current GAN backlog drive page and continues on the GA1 page? Unfortunately, as it was nominated on April 11, it won't be eligible for an extra half point as an "old" nomination. Please let me know. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:53, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

@BlueMoonset, sure, we can put it back into the queue and wait for another reviewer to create a GA2. I would definitely appreciate that. – Epicgenius (talk) 16:07, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Line template bolding

I've noticed about half and half, some templates use bold text for express stations and some don't, which style should we go with? Template:IRT Flushing Line and Template:BMT Brighton Line for example. Cards84664 14:50, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

My feeling is that we should use bold consistently. For the BMT Brighton Line template, except for the size of the icons, it is unclear which stations are express. On the other hand, we should not use bold excessively, particularly for lines that don't have any express segments, or for lines that have very short "express" segments, such as the Rockaway Line. – Epicgenius (talk) 15:44, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Epicgenius/Archive/2022,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 11777 articles, as of 16:00, 8 May 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.
