WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, Trainsandotherthings, Lee Vilenski, Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, SounderBruce, Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

GA list for Manhattan buildings

Hi Epicgenius, following up from old discussions that were never actioned, I've split up the good article buildings list, adding Wikipedia:Good_articles/Art and architecture#Architecture – Buildings of Manhattan and Wikipedia:Good_articles/Art and architecture#Architecture – Buildings of the United States (other). Please feel free to fix any misplaced entries (shout out to New York Life Building and Smalls Paradise for not having "Manhattan" in the article preview). That said, even split all three sub-categories remain massive, so don't spend too long pouring through. The US one has a couple of easy splits (eg. Chicago) if needed. Manhattan though, what a behemoth. Perhaps a split would help provide some further insight (theatres?), but either way, an impressive body of work. CMD (talk) 16:01, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

@Chipmunkdavis, thanks for the heads up. I really appreciate it. It does, in fact, seem like a third of all GAs are about Manhattan buildings (even disregarding the rest of New York or even the rest of New York City). There are a few things that need rearranging, but I'll fix these shortly.

Regarding Perhaps a split would help provide some further insight (theatres?), I originally considered splitting the list by building type (e.g. houses, skyscrapers, theaters, hotels). I don't know if that would be a better way of categorizing these buildings, though, as there will still be a lot of Manhattan articles. – Epicgenius (talk) 17:12, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Some of the categories I mentioned (specifically houses/residences and hotels) already exist, so I have moved some of these articles down. However, I'm not sure what to do with articles like One57 which is a hotel, residence, and skyscraper, so I've left these alone for now. – Epicgenius (talk) 17:35, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

I don't think edge cases matter too much, so long as it's on a reasonable list that matches (thanks) the talk page category. Further splits are helpful mostly for usability. A bigger list is a bigger area to scroll through when adding new articles, and harder to sort through (it took a long time to go through 587 buildings!). Even now, thanks to the V2022 skin, when I look at the list of Manhattan building articles it is so long the header disappears off the top of the page before the end, but at least it's easier to manage than before. Layout

Here, that's a pretty unclear header. But at an article titled after and all about a station, it's pretty clearly about a station layout, not a newspaper layout or newspaper site layout. That said, though, you're right about one thing (consistency). I'm not about to hop across all two million or so similarly wordy sections just to save eight bytes on each, especially if you're following closely behind and adding them back. That's not a knock on you for doing it these three times. Thanks for keeping me in check, honestly! Just saying it's too big a job for any person, and pending a consensus to have a bot do it, I'm with you in accepting it's not going to change. More importantly, I'm curious, was the one edit you "thanked" me for from a shared hatred of misused "would" and useless "however" or a deeper love for "Jet Pilot"? @InedibleHulk, thanks for the talk page message; I really do appreciate it. I agree that we need a wider discussion about these section names. There are over 500 articles about NYC-area stations that have "Station layout" sections (not to mention articles about stations located in other cities). If the section name was an issue on these two articles, they would be problematic for the remaining articles. The reason these sections are titled "Station layout" is because these articles did not originally contain "station" in their titles, e.g. Sutphin Boulevard (IND Queens Boulevard Line).

I did thank you because you removed the inappropriate usages of "would" and "however". It is a helpful change and much appreciated - improving the flow of existing sentences is as important as adding information to an article. – Epicgenius (talk) 13:05, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for posting these links. Unfortunately, it looks like the Southampton/Shinnecock Windmill draft has several unreliable sources, such as LinkedIn and Geni.com. There is also a lot of unsourced content on that page. The draft will need some work just to be accepted at WP:AFC, let alone be improved to GA status. I recommend looking through newspapers such as Newsday, the NY Times, and the NY Daily News, as well as finding book sources. – Epicgenius (talk) 14:37, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
