Commerzbank tower

I saw you edited the article a little bit so could you help me ectract some infrmation about the tower from the German wikipedia articule. I used google to translat, and It is a bit hard to read. Feel free. Many of my older articles have uncited material in them, but this hasn't been challenged by other editors. If it is, then I will tend to add the material again with citation to support it. OK, now I don't know what you are talking about. As an experienced editor, I do not go around deleting material willy nilly. Any removal of content is explained and justified. As far as I am aware, the information I deleted from the article you mention was uncited and by Wikipedia policy, any material that is uncited may be challenged and removed at any time. I intend on continuing to contribute and removing or merging material if Wikipedia policy allows me to. City of Birmingham Stadium

I found the links to the images on a forum page about this development, and from my understanding, these were released as part of the development details - though I cannot find where from. Second city Manchester/ Birmingham

Dear Mr Erebus,

Given that there is a current propaganda war from the grim mill town of Manchester to proclaim itself as the second city, even though it is ranked 8th by the office of National Statistics figures (2005) population estimates, I do not find it acceptable for the Birmingham page to provide credibility for these rediculous claims. I have therefore deleted and will continue to delete this reference to Manchester to provide balance to the Wikipedia article.

Unlike the Birmingham page, the Manchester page proclaims itself as the second city and carries no such reference to the fact that this is disputed by Birmingham. In the interests of fairness and balance I find this an unacceptable bias and will make amendments to rectify.

If you read the Second city of the United Kingdom article, you will notice that the artticle explains that there is now several more factors used when it comes to deciding which city should be given the "second city" title. These include cultural, political and economical factors as well as the population figures you outlined.
For the Birmingham page to provide reference to Manchester shows it to balanced and not from one single point of view. The fact that this is cited too shows that it is a credible claim.
If you continue to delete this from the article, you will be starting an edit war between you and other editors. This means that you will eventually be blocked by an administrator for a time period decided upon by them. As well as that, you will find that other editor's efforts to give the article Featured Article status have been in vain as it is the subject of an edit war - as one of the criteria for featured article status states that it must not be subject to this.
Therefore, you should stop deleting such information from the Birmingham article and actually contribute to the Manchester article by adding that Birmingham is a rival to this. This would therefore balance out the two articles. - Erebus555 13:34, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Erebus555, if I understand your post at talk:Manchester correctly, you have removed a reference to Manchester from the Birmingham article because references in the opposite direction (for want of a better description) are removed - even though you think the article is improved by the cross-referencing. I did this seeing as the editor on the Manchester article removed the reference to Birmingham per discussions on talk page archives. This led me to believe that such information added to the Birmingham article, therefore, must not comply with the discussions which have taken place. It maybe best to come to an agreement to whether these references to Birmingham and Manchester on the articles should be included, as I can see it touches a nerve with some editors. - Erebus555 11:44, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Maps

Hello Erebus555,

I'd be happy to produce a localised map for the city. This issue seems to have risen elsewhere in stopping UK settlement articles recieving GA and FA.

What I require is some source material; a few problems include do we use a Birmingham map or a City of Birmingham map, and how do we divide the map (by ward, or other kind of division)? If we use a Birmingham map, then where does its "official" boundaries end? What should be included on the map?

From memory, User:Fingerpuppet may be helpful here. Once we've sorted these, it wouldn't take me long to put something together. Hope that helps, Jza84 18:57, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

That map is excellent - give me a week or so and I'll see what I can do. With regards to the Birmingham article text, some of the content needs to be ordered according to the UK settlements guidelines on sections, (Geog, then Hist, then Demographics, then Landmarks, and then Transport etc are later sections. Administration should be Politics or Political representation, and Famous residents should be titled Notable Brummies) and I believe the infobox should be contiguous to bring it inline with the rest of the UK. Just some pointers!

Thanks for spotting the vandalism warning on my talk page. I've raised my concerns at the admin noticeboard, as I feel this is becoming a little targetted against me and that article, despite attempts for a compromise and engagement.

Map making software

Hello, and sorry for the delay in responding!

I'm still in the middle of a backlog for infobox county maps which I'm trying to roll out asap. I do still intend to aid in other projects like Birmingham however.

I use a package called Adobe Illustrator CS. It's an industry-standard graphics software package, which I think produces much higher quality vector images (< see the article if you're not as much of a graphics-nerd as I) than other image-making software.

I also complete my images in Adobe Photoshop CS before uploading them to Wikipedia. I have a degree in Visual Arts and I think it's needed to use Illustrator as it's a little tricky for new comers.

It's a real shame that this package is being downloaded illegally and anonymously through p2p networks like Shareaza.com and is avaliable to anyone with an internet connection. If you happened to buy a copy however, I'd be more than willing to share how I create maps in more detail.

blocks of flats

Do blocks of flats have separate pages on the wiki? What sort of page should Samuel Vale House, Coventry be included in. What is the correct term? "block of flats", "tower block" or "apartment block". Snowman 17:16, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Firstly, we refer to them as tower blocks if they are above 6 storeys in height. Below that, they can be called blocks of flats. Tower blocks have their own individual articles, as do large blocks of flats. The article you asked about would be called Samuel Vale House, although, if there was an article already by that name, then the article name should be Samuel Vale House, Coventry. A reference to it should be made on Samuel Vale House. The wiki really wants as much info as possible. The main info that users have is the number of floors, location (down to road name if possible), height in metres and date of construction. If you had all that information then the article would look like: "Samuel Vale House is a 17 storey tower block on X Road, Coventry. Completed in 19xx, it is xx metres tall." We also have categories as well just to keep it all organised. The style is very similar, or possibly equal to, that of Wikipedia. Hope that helps! - Erebus555 18:48, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
The categories in wikicommons refers to "apartment blocks", and as far as I could find "Category:Towers in the United Kingdom" also contains monuments. I can not get started with the categories on commons for residential tower blocks at the present time. I new category structure might need building, or have I missed something. Church of St Barnabas, Erdington

Hi - I'd welcome any local knowledge you have about this church and Thomas Rickman, as I see you edited that article recently. According to the Birmingham Mail, the stained glass windows were designed and installed in the late 19th century by Thomas Rickman, and various sources state that the church was to have celebrated its 150th anniversary next year, giving it a date of construction of 1858. However this does not tie in with the dates in the article, 1776-1841. Can you shed any light on this anomaly please? Were there perhaps two architects with the same name? – Tivedshambo (talk) 17:17, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Well firstly, I can't see how Thomas Rickman installed stained glass windows in the church during the late 19th century when he died in the early to mid 19th century. The information I have found is a bit sketchy but can be pieced together. The actual church appears to have been built to a design by Thomas Rickman (or possibly Rickman and Hutchinson, which was the name of his practice) in 1822-23. In 1858, a district chapelry was assigned to the church under the name "The District Chapelry of Erdington". I currently have two book sources stating that the church was built in 1823 and just the one for the district chapelry statement. I hope this clears things up! - Erebus555 17:30, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Pinhay Bay

Hi, Way back in Dec 2005 you created stubs for Pinhay Bay & Pinhay Cliffs stating they are in Somerset. I was trying to do some clean up for WikiProject Somerset & was going to merge them (I put merge tags on a couple of months ago) but I can't find any record, map or whatever for Pinhay Bay or Pinhay in Somerset - the only ones I can find are in Devon - do you have any other sources which say there are sites of this name in Somerset - or could we edit the article to put them in Devon?— Rod talk 21:07, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Well, welcome back to Wikipedia, firstly! One way of contacting a Wikipedia editor is through the way you just contacted me - their talk page. However, if the message you want to give them includes personal information then it may actually be better to send them an email. The way to do this is go onto their userpage and on the left hand menu, click on 'Email this user'. Not every user has this option as some wish to keep their email address private. After clicking on this, you can enter the message subject and the message itself. These are the two ways of contacting an editor that I know of.
Of course, as Wikipedia is a collaborative effort, you can add information to an article yourself. If it is not of a written standard that Wikipedia likes, other users can simply edit this to comply with WP:MOS. User:Oosoom

I’ve tried to edit User talk:Oosoom several times. Each time I get blocked and get accused of adding spam. There are no links in my comment. I’ve had no trouble with other Wikipedia edits. There’s been the same trouble with my computer at home and with an IT Centre computer on a totally different network. It looks like the problem is with Wikipedia computers. My comment wasn’t important but the blockage is. I fear anybody who tries to contact Oosoom from any computer network will get the same trouble. I mentioned the "Floozie" several times. Storm of the month

Cyclone Gene formed on January 26 over the open south Pacific Ocean. It drifted southward, and strengthened into Tropical Storm Gene on January 28 as it moved across the Fijian archipelago. There, it brought heavy rainfall, which caused the worst flooding in several years. Half of the country was left without power, and the cyclone killed seven people in Fiji. The storm turned southwestward, developing a cloud-filled eye and quickly strengthening by the end of the month.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • One tropical cyclone formed in the Western North Pacific Ocean west of The Philippines, which was analyzed by Japan Meteorological Agency as a depression; it tracked southwestward and did not significantly affect any land areas.
  • In addition to Cyclone Gene, Tropical Storm Elisa and Cyclone Fuma occurred in the South Pacific ocean during the month, along with three tropical depressions.

Wikiwork and 1000 articles In January 2008, the WikiProject began using a system called Wikiwork, or ω. It weighs the overall quality of the project's articles, and a lower number means a greater total quality. The weighed ω, as used above, is a relative number that can be used to compare groups of this article. As of this publication, the relative ω of the project is 3.404, corresponding to between Start and B class. However, when limiting it solely to storm articles, the number drops to 2.98, which is slightly better than B class. During the month, a new statistics page was created.

Additionally, during the month, Mitchazenia pointed out that we received our 1,000th article with the creation of Cyclone Elita.

WikiProject Coventry

On the West Midlands WikiProject page, it may be an idea to create a subsection called "Sub-Projects" or something along those lines. Beneath it, you can link to the Coventry WikiProject and give a couple of sentences on the scope and goals of the project.
I am actually glad that you have proposed the Coventry WikiProject and managed to get it through to creation as I had initially suggested creating one for Birmingham. However, after discussions with other editors, the decision was taken to propose and eventually create the West Midlands WikiProject. So, hopefully, the creation of the Coventry WikiProject will give enough justification for the creation of a Birmingham WikiProject. Storm of the month

Cyclone Ivan
Cyclone Ivan

Cyclone Ivan formed on February 7 and subsequently executed a loop to the west-southwest. Encountering favorable conditions, it strengthened to attain peak winds on February 17 before striking northeastern Madagascar. It degenerated into a remnant low pressure area as it crossed the island, and briefly re-organized into a weak tropical depression before dissipating on February 22. Ivan caused heavy damage in Madagascar, leaving 190,000 people homeless and causing over 83 deaths.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • In the South Pacific ocean, Cyclone Gene persisted from the previous month; a tropical depression also occurred in the month.
  • Tropical Cyclone Nicholas was the only named storm during the month in the Australian region, which struck Western Australia. Two tropical lows occurred during the month, the latter of which later formed into Tropical Cyclone Ophelia.
  • Four storms occurred in the Southwest Indian Ocean, including two from the previous month and the aforementioned Cyclone Ivan. Cyclone Hondo became the strongest cyclone worldwide in the month, and after becoming extratropical it regenerated over ten days later about 1750 miles (2800 km) to its west-northwest.

The February member of the month is RattleMan, for his lasting dedication and continual support of the project. During February, the user worked on improving the timeline articles for the previous season. RattleMan often updates the sections on storms in season articles, and helps to maintain the southern hemisphere articles.

Improvements During the month, a total of 15 new articles were added, though the net increase in start or stub articles was only three. The highest quality set of articles for a basin is for the Eastern Pacific Ocean, of which half of its articles are either a good article or better; all of its retired storm articles are good or better. However, the basin has a lower total number of articles, and the Atlantic basin has a higher overall total of good articles.

There is a drive to increase the number of featured topics, which is located on the project talk page.

Cyclone Jokwe

Cyclone Jokwe was the first tropical cyclone to make landfall in Mozambique since Cyclone Favio struck in the previous year. The tenth named storm of the 2007-08 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season, Jokwe was first classified as a tropical depression on March 2 over the open Southwest Indian Ocean. It tracked west-southwest, crossing northern Madagascar as a tropical storm on March 5 before intensifying into a tropical cyclone on March 6. Jokwe rapidly intensified to reach peak winds of 195 km/h (120 mph), before weakening slightly and striking Nampula Province in northeastern Mozambique. It quickly weakened while paralleling the coastline, though the storm restrengthened as it turned southward in the Mozambique Channel. Late in its duration, it remained nearly stationary for several days, and steadily weakened due to wind shear before dissipating on March 16.

The storm caused minor damage in northern Madagascar. In Mozambique, the cyclone affected 165,000 people, and left at least sixteen fatalities. Cyclone Jokwe destroyed over 9,000 houses and damaged over 3,000 more, with the heaviest damage in Angoche and the Island of Mozambique in Nampula Province. The storm also caused widespread power outages and crop damages.

The March member of the month is CapeVerdeWave, whose first edit was to a tropical cyclone article, back in January 2006. CapeVerdeWave has been a steady and active member of the project, writing several articles on Category 5 hurricanes as well as working on the often forgotten older hurricanes. The user also has contributed to some older season articles, and recently helped update the project after the recent hurricane re-analysis. We thank him for his continued dedication.

Project News: Updates on the Best Track - Atlantic and North Indian Ocean, and more
In February, the Hurricane Research Division released its reanalysis for the Atlantic Ocean from 1915 to 1920. Highlights include the addition of eight storms, as well as the removal of one storm. The winds in the 1919 Florida Keys Hurricane were increased to 130 knots, and the 1916 Texas hurricane was increased to a Category 4 hurricane.

According to an email sent to the India Meteorological Department, there will be an online version of the North Indian Ocean best track from 1877 to 2006, scheduled to be released in two months; it is unknown if it will cost money to access.

In unrelated news, the project was featured on the Signpost; Mitchazenia was interviewed, and talked about the past, present, and future of the project.

At the end of the month, there were five different Featured content candidates (FXC's) by five different editors; two were featured article candidates, two were featured list candidates, and one was a featured picture candidate. The have been a few times in which there were four FXC's from four different editors, most recently in February and early March of 2008.

Typhoon Neoguri on April 17

Typhoon Neoguri was the earliest tropical cyclone on record to strike China. It formed on April 13 to the east of the Philippines, and once entering the South China Sea, environmental conditions allowed for quick strengthening. Neoguri attained its peak intensity of 150 km/h (90 mph) as it approached the island of Hainan, though rapidly weakened due to unfavorable conditions. The system made landfall in southern China on April 19, causing three deaths and moderate damage totaling over ¥296 million (2008 RMB, $42 million 2008 USD). The typhoon left 40 fishermen missing in the South China Sea.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • A weak tropical depression formed near New Caledonia in the South Pacific ocean early in the month, and another tropical depression developed in the basin later in the month.
  • Two named storms formed in the Australian region during the month, including Tropical Cyclone Durga, which was the first ever cyclone named by the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia. Tropical Cyclone Rosie co-existed with Durga for much of its duration.
  • Cyclone Nargis developed in the North Indian Ocean late in the month, and reached its peak intensity early in May; further details will be covered in the next newsletter.

There is discussion on the status of articles on non-notable storms in the Merging page of the project. Comments are welcome.

A Wikipedia traffic counter was launched earlier this year. In the month of February, the article on Hurricane Katrina was viewed just over 200,000 times, making the article the 496th most viewed article on the English Wikipedia during the month.

During the month, Hurricane Camille was demoted from GA status, continuing the trend of good articles degrading in status on notable storms; other occurrences include the FA removal of Cyclone Tracy and 1900 Galveston Hurricane. If anyone has any ideas how to fix the problem, feedback and ideas are appreciated.

Accessdates

There is no need to replace assessdates as you did on "Woodway Park School and Community College‎". Accessdaymonth and accessyear are used on some FA's and sometimes it is written in scratch format; it is clearer which is the day and which is the month. Big Brum was never a fire tower and wasn't designed to be one either. The original plans for Big Brum by Thomason clearly show that it was intended to be a clocktower. It may be possible that the speaker was actually referring to the clock tower at Sutton Coldfield Town Hall as this was a fire tower before becoming a clock tower.

Google doesn't have any control on what comes up on a search, unless it is a dangerous site and they are asked to remove it. Wikipedia's evergrowing popularity could mean that some people, who are searching for information on Birmingham City Centre, will refer to Wikipedia first before searching on Google. Co-ordinates

Do you understand the co-ordinate display system - I see our enthusiastic geo-locator is on an enforced vacation. If you look at Dorridge there are two overlayed co-ordinates, and I am not sure how it has managed that. Thought you might have seen this before or could point me in the right direction. Don't worry, when you see something like this on an article, it means that there are two sets of coordinates somewhere in the article. As there is an infobox, that means one set of coordinates are in that. Those should remain as they actually help put the little marker on the map. The other set of coordinates are usually found at the top of the article (which in this case they are not) or at the bottom of the article in the External links section (which they are here). They are usually in a template beginning with 'coor'. Just remove this from the article in the edit box and it will be sorted whilst having no detrimental effects to the quality of the article. Thank you for the comments on the Lad in the Lane article! I felt it was necessary to get rid of some red links in the Architecture of Birmingham article. As for the category, I think it is a good idea. I think the category should cover the scope of the Parliamentary constituency/ Council constituency to avoid confusion over the boundaries. This would mean including Stockland Green and Kingstanding and would also make the inclusion of Gravelly Hill Interchange possible. Also, I think an article for the Highcroft Hospital is due. There is a lot of information out there and the sub-section is only going to get bigger! Hi, I was looking at your talk page. "Handsworth station", was opened 14/10/1854 as Handsworth and Smethwick railway station. It was renamed Handsworth station by BRB; and it closed on 6 March 1972. The station listed as "Handsworth station" on the Wikipedia:WikiProject West Midlands/Article requests, appears to be Handsworth Wood railway station. I think the collaborations section should go in the discography article, as most collaborations produce a single at least. Also, I don't think there is any need for a This Is My Demo section considering there is already an article on it! The problem with expanding the article is that there are very few references out there on the internet at the moment. So, whatever is put on the article usually ends up with a Cite tag. As it stands, I think the article is fine at the moment. Until the release of the Signature LP, I don't think it can be expanded much further as there will be a lot of hype when the album is released. The discography article is in need of expansion though. A section on singles released by Sway needs to be included and may be a section on tracks that he has produced - if there are any. - Erebus555 (talk) 15:45, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

As part of the Motorcycling WikProject I am working though all the missing articles and stubs for British Bikes and sorting out all the manufacturers with an infobox etc. I've just replaced your redirect of Ariel Motorcycles and linked it as main to the section in Ariel (vehicle) - when you have a moment please will you have a look at how the two can fit together more comfortably? Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

Tony Hatch article - split into three big sections

Hi, I've split the Tony Hatch article into sections, as you suggested on the discussion board, though not as many as would have been necessary from a "visual" point of view. I did not want to re-write the article in any way (since I know virtually nothing about the subject), so I had to make do with the opportunities for splitting which the current article offered. It is some form of progress, at least. I had hoped that you might find the time to replace my crappy section titles, for I failed to come up with useful ones.

Commons account hacked?

Hi Erebus555,
could it be that your account on Commons has been hacked? Though I don't know anything about your work here and little on Commons, todays actions of your account on Commons were so strange (compared to your earlier uploads) that they raised alert. From your account an explicit image was uploaded over an existing high-profile image of Stockholm, therefore guaranteeing wide distribution. Hey, I have not used my Commons account for quite a while. I have no idea what happened there; those were certainly not my edits. I'm very confused and concerned as to how the person got my password so I have changed it.

"Birmingham" or "West Midlands"?

I wondered what your thoughts were on the naming of various articles for districts of Birmingham that use a distinguisher to differentiate them from other places of the same name elsewhere? I only ask because I recently noticed that Nickyl had created a new article about California in Birmingham, but that he had done so under California, West Midlands. Whilst I’m far from being anywhere near an expert when it comes to Wikipedia’s name conventions, I was under the impression that the distinguisher should be the principal area, which in this case would be Birmingham. Consequently I moved the page to California, Birmingham, so that it would then be consistent with neighbouring district articles such as Quinton, Birmingham and Northfield, Birmingham (I have also similarly moved Woodgate, West Midlands to Woodgate, Birmingham for the same reasons). Looking at Category:Areas of Birmingham, West Midlands I see that there are 20 district articles that use “Birmingham” as a distinguisher, and 8 that use “West Midlands”. I therefore wonder if, for the sake of consistency, it might not be best to move the 8 articles that have “West Midlands” so that they have “Birmingham” instead? Knowing you are an active member with an interest in all things Brummagem, I would be grateful to hear you thoughts on this? Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia.
