"Incorrect" spellings in old book titles

Hello, you recently made some corrections in the articles "Edward Wright (mathematician)" and "Emery Molyneux", changing the spelling of somtimes in a book title to sometimes. However, the change should not have been made as this "misspelling" was in the title of a 1599 book, and in those days the way English words was spelled was not necessarily the same as the way we spell them today. In fact, there were actually hidden comments in the articles indicating that these were not misspellings. In future, before changing spellings in old book titles or quotations, please check the source to ensure that it is really a misspelling. Hi Eumolpo, I undid a correction of 'allmost' to 'almost' you'd made in the article on Robert Hayman, for the same reason as the contributor above - though the spelling is incorrect now, it is the way the word was written at the time, and as the quote is meant to be an exact copy of what Hayman actually wrote, we have to stick with his spelling. Sorry, but your correction from 'Intendent' to 'Independent' in Safehold, etc. is incorrect. There is in fact a position within the Safehold church known as 'Intendent', as mentioned earlier in the same paragraph. Please read the books before making such changes, since (especially in SF) the author may make up new names, ranks, etc. Murray Langton (talk) 09:18, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi there. You must have not noticed it, but on this edit you corrected a word which was marked with [sic]. I try to obfuscate those words so people don't "fix" them, but I sometimes forget and not everyone does this, so caution is required. Again, do not change spellings in direct quotes or cited titles. This edit is not allowed. We all know there is a typo in the original, but all we are allowed to do is say what was said, not correct others' mistakes. Note again there is a "sic" after it, which makes it very clear that the (mis)spelling is intentional in wikipedia because it's carrying that mistake from the source. "For for" corrections

Hi - please can you take care when correcting "for for" in the text of articles. A lot of the "corrections" you have made today are in fact wrong. Some examples of changes you've made:

• "it was in fact the very man we'd been looking for for three months" changed by you to "it was in fact the very man we'd been looking for three months". -- from Lofty Large
• "Olswang has been in the Sunday Times Best 100 Firms To Work For for the last 5 years." changed by you to "Olswang has been in the Sunday Times Best 100 Firms To Work For the last 5 years". -- from Olswang
• "Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, who they had "been looking for for the last few weeks" changed to "Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, who they had "been looking for the last few weeks" -- from Cofer Black

How interesting: an editor who specializes in 'orthographic correction'. Thank you for your 13:01, 12 June 2011 correction of the redundant-'the' I had left after editing a section of SDF Public Access Unix System. I imagine that I was preoccupied with restoring a large section of the article which had 'vaporized' after a previous edit ("Oops! Where did the rest of the article go?"). Curious how the human mind can fail to recognize an obvious error (even under careful scrutiny), when it wears 'blinders' imposed by the perceived urgency of another matter. Diverse specialties will ultimately result in a 'uniform cleanliness' throughout Wikipedia. (Although, as noted above, the context of the apparent error must first be examined to avoid defeating the purpose of one's specialty. Bravo, nonetheless.) Well done. Orthographic

Is fixing "the the" really an orthographic correction?—I thought those were only spelling corrections. (For clarity, this is intended as a genuine question.) -Rrius (talk) 19:08, 10 September 2011

You mistake me. I'm not arguing that "the the" is correct; what I am saying is that repeating a word isn't a spelling error. Spelling is the forming of words with letters in the accepted order. Both instances of "the" had the letters in the correct order, it's just that one instance was unnecessary. If accidental repetition of words isn't simply sui generis, it is a question of syntax or grammar, not spelling. -Rrius (talk) 00:31, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Eumolpo, I also was wondering about "orthographic" (as have several others who have enquired or commented on this page). I would suggest that you could possibly change it to the more common 'Typo' as is 'Typographical error' (sometimes called a Speeling error ) You could link 'orthographic' to spelling in your summaries like this [[spelling|orthographic]], or perhaps 'orthographic' is better? Chrome (browser) at least will 'remember' it so you won't need to type it out, which I assume you don't do now.

"her her"

Hi. You have recently been trawling Wikipedia looking for "her her" formations, and "correcting" them to a single "her". You have clearly been doing this in good faith, but can you please stop. In the vast majority of cases (to be precise, in 37 out of 43 cases you changed today, or 86%) the formation is quite correct: one "her" is an object pronoun, and the other is a possessive pronoun, as in "he gave her her first break". Spelling correction to Frances Buss

I notice you corrected a spelling mistake in Frances Buss without noticing that it was introduced by repeated vandalism by an IP, including obvious inserted references to prostitution. Please take extra care when correcting proper names and non-English words

Your edit here appears to be part of a mechanical campaign of replacing "Buiding" with the English word "Building". Consider, though, that proper historical names of Geo-political locations in Hungary from the 1800s are unlikely to match common English words. Too hasty spelling changes

I'm afraid that I have to take you to task for a recent edit in which you changed "chid" to "child".

The phrase in which the word occurred was "[H]e held a rally in the county at which he chid his opponent for her unwillingness to campaign there". The position of the word in the clause clearly calls for a verb, like the past tense of "chide"; changing it to a noun like "child" leaves the clause without a verb.

Your gnomery is definitely appreciated: Wikipedia's got tons of spelling and grammatical errors that need correcting, and I'm grateful to editors like you who hunt them down and fix them. However, performing the task too quickly and automatically can introduce errors where none existed before. Ammodramus (talk) 12:34, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
