Regarding your doc change[edit]

In the category name, "type" will always be enclosed in parentheses, but "series name" will not be. To me, it's clearer and more helpful to show them likewise in the documentation.
I thought you were pointing out in your edit summary that when I inserted an underscore in "series_name", it looked similar to the usage for parameter names, and it is not the name of a parameter in the calling template; hence, my first edit was also confusing; so you reverted it, which I accepted.

My revert was for both, but I have less issue with series-name than with series_name. You left [[:Category:series-name (type)|*]]. @Gonnym: perhaps "series-type" would be an improvement.
Actually, would it be useful to document the functionality using "series-type" for "TV series"/ "video game series" etc, plus "content-type" for "episode"/ "character"/ "location"/ "element"? The template is doing more than currently stated in the doc, e.g. the given example Category:Arrow (TV series) episode redirects to lists is placed in Category:Arrow (TV series) episodes.
Just realised, I may have been misunderstanding "type" all along. I thought "type" referred to series-type, since you raised the need for "(TV series)" at Wikipedia_talk:Categories_for_discussion#RFC_on_including_disambiguators_in_category_names. That was why I left "type" in parentheses, and thought I was being consistent. However, "type" in the current doc means content-type, doesn't it. Well, that needs to be explained in the doc.

Sorry for not responding sooner to your ping[2] to WP:CFDWM.

I assumed that I couldn't edit that page. I now see that I can edit it ....but it still feels wrong for a non-admin to be poking in there.

There is a further issue that most of the backlog results from my nominations. Given arbcom's bizarre ruled that cleaning up after my own nominations were implemented by someone else was sufficiently WP:INVOLVED to justify stripping me of adminship, I am not gonna go there.

Yes, it was because part of the backlog was from your disambiguation nominations that I pinged you; I thought you might enjoy creating dab pages, or at least have a list of potential cat dab pages to be made. Yes, notice the preceding edit "Update category". My main work in Wikipedia is WP:CFD administration. The job (renaming/deleting categories) is not done until links to old pages are checked.
I come across old user drafts, among other more useful pages, when checking backlinks to former category pages (redlinks in "What links here"). The second edit (blanking) is to save any similar maintenance being required on that page in future.
I do always check whether there are usable edits in the page history that have yet to be merged into the live article. If there are, sometimes I merge the content myself WP:AGF, giving attribution; sometimes I tag it for merging, and leave a note in the live article talk page.
But when I blank, it is not blanking for no reason, which was an accusation made against me some months ago. COPYARTICLE says it shouldn't be hosted indefinitely. Blanking saves work for me or other admins checking backlinks after future moves.
I began blanking abandoned user pages after realising what a drain they were on admins' time and attention. Time after time I found that their recent page history showed a series of edits by admins updating various links and tags. Even when no edit is made, the presence of abandoned user drafts in a list of "what links here" takes time and effort to check whether an edit is desirable.

I just wanted to say a quick thanks for two things you did at CFDS:

  1. Withdrawing[3] your proposal to move Category:Albini (cognomen) to Category:Albinus (cognomen). As I noted at speedy, my original move proposal had a bit of a coin toss, and your questioning of it was wise. The fact that my original move turned out on scrutiny to be OK was mostly a matter of luck.
  2. removing[4] the disambiguation section heading as no longer needed. For the last 3 or 4 weeks, I had been working in reverse alphabetical order through a list of ~7,800 articles not included in their eponymous categories, and that section was being used to disambiguate the false positives. The last edit on that list [5] was late on Thursday night, so the job is done. You were very eagle-eyed to spot that it was complete.

Following progress on the list would not have been in any way stalking, but your other path to the same decision was sound. The subsection was no longer helpful.
Now I gotta wait for the CFD backlog to clear before I do re-run of all my list-making, and see what's left over. Mitsui Miike Coal Mine disaster[edit]

Hi, I removed the categories on the above page because I redirected the whole page to a section in another article. This was because the page was only a couple of sentences long and didn't make sense to be its own article. When I did that I replaced the entire page contents with the redirect code (as per instructions here). I'm not sure what the purpose of having categories attached to a redirect page is - could you advise, please? Itsfini (talk) 16:58, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Itsfini: please see Wikipedia:Categorizing redirects. I don't see anything on WP:Redirect that contradicts that guideline. Basically, we categorise redirects when they fit in a category better than the target page. So if a stub is merged and redirected to another article, categories which are not on the target page should often be left in place. – Fayenatic London 21:42, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, this seems to have come about because of the use of {{Religious buildings and structures completed in decade category header}} by user:BrownHairedGirl. The preceding Category:20th-century religious buildings and structures by decade was already deleted in April (without notifying its creator user:Iaritmioawp), and Category:19th-century religious buildings and structures by decade (created in 2012 by user:JASpencer) is now likewise tagged as empty.
Well, the former subcats e.g. Category:Religious buildings and structures completed in the 2000s seem to be sufficiently well parented in (inter alia) Category:Religious buildings and structures by decade and Category:21st-century religious buildings and structures. Therefore the emptied categories are not really necessary; moreover, there is no general pattern of having "XX-century Foo by decade" e.g. Category:21st-century buildings and structures by decade. Conservation in X[edit]

Hello, I think you may be an administrator for the moving of catgories? A whole slew of categories were moved overnight from "Conservation in X" to "Nature Conservation in X" as a speedy move, and I would like to dispute this move, which as far I can see was carried out without discussion. To take as an example, Category:Nature conservation in Scotland clearly includes both nature conservation and heritage/built environment, and the lead article, Conservation in Scotland, is written to reflect this. So moving this to nature conservation does not really make sense. As I say, it looks like lots of categories were moved at once, so it may be appropriate for some, but certainly not all of them. Another user (Oculi) had alerted me to the fact that the former "Conservation in X" included conservation of both natural and built heritage. Grinner (talk) 17:54, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Now Binksternet is making the Spandau Ballet The Story weird and he is trying to wreck the article now.

Please WP:Assume good faith. If you disagree with edits by an established user, discuss it on the article talk page, in this case Talk:The Story – The Very Best of Spandau Ballet, or on the user's talk page. This will be clearer than trying to have a conversation in edit summaries.
I see that Binksternet thinks you are the same person as User talk:Ben2719941, an account that was blocked for using multiple accounts. Wikipedia is very strict about that. Well, I can see straight away that you write like the other user, and are interested in the same sorts of articles, and seem to be well informed about the history of the other user. It does look as if you are the same person.

What the Heck are you sending me anyway? huh? Are you trying to say that you want me to add Essential albums? No way I don't plan to add anymore The Essentials to Wikipedia you do that yourself do not ask me to do your dirty work.

It was you who kept bringing up The Essential, but with no links, wasting my time so that I had to go searching to find what you were talking about. Well, I found that it was deleted after Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_June_25#Category:The_Essential this discussion, where it seems that Marcocapelle and others assumed that the pages were already in Category:Legacy Recordings compilation albums etc. In some cases at least, they were not, so the category ought to have been merged/split rather than just deleted. Here's a chance to put that right.

Who is "we"? It's all right to have somebody helping with research or with your writing, but you should not be sharing your account. If more than one person is editing as Sireesha EV, please would each of you set up your own user account on Wikipedia. Homeland episode redirects[edit]

Hey, could you tell me what the point of this edit is? I commented in the CfD that if the redirects aren't deleted that they will still be categorized. You supported the deletion of the category but then recategorized them anyways. Now instead of actually being in a relevant category, you've placed them in Category:Episode redirects to lists, which states at the top, that is is a container category and should contain only sub-categories. --Gonnym (talk) 14:26, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, sorry, I think I intended to put them in Category:Redirects from episodes. Would that be of any use to anyone? If not, I'm happy to revert those edits.

Entries in Category:Redirects from episodes are placed there by {{R from television episode}}}, which when not given a TV series name, also places them in Category:Episode redirects to lists, which is why I stated in the CfD that if the redirects are not deleted and we still want to add redirect categories, then deleting the series category was incorrect. --Gonnym (talk) 17:08, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so I should remove that Rcat template from the Homeland redirects to episode articles. I think I used that Rcat on Homeland Series 2 Episode 4 & similar because I could not find any other applicable template. I have taken those four to Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 November 6#Homeland Series 2 Episode 4. Is it OK to leave the others for now? My goal was to populate the renamed Category:Roller coasters manufactured by S&S – Sansei Technologies, and I apologise for not checking all the effects of my edit. I have now moved and updated template:S&S – Sansei Technologies which I hope will fix any other messed-up links. What's up with these Cornish occupation categories? Some of them are showing up on the Empty category list. The CfD discussion was closed a few days ago so the closer removed the CfD tags from the categories. But then you reverted them. Can they be tagged as empty cats now? Liz Read! Cornish categories[edit]

I have completely lost track of what is going on with the Cornish occupation categories. So many moves and deletions and undeletions. Is Category:Writers from Cornwall coming back again? Yes, that was a disastrous fat-finger-syndrome moment, for which I apologise to everyone concerned. I have left those edits deleted.
I have now split the page history of Category:Writers from Cornwall to give user:William Allen Simpson (rather than the CFD bot) the credit for the redirect that he made at the old name Category:Cornish writers, and to bring the old page history into the current page, which I believe is correct. – Fayenatic London 22:18, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
