Overcategorisation[edit]

Hi, I noticed that yesterday you were adding Category:Irish books to articles that are already in its sub-category Irish novels, or in sister categories such as Early Irish literature or Irish manuscripts. Please just use the most specific category that applies. - Fayenatic (talk) 12:34, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oh fair enough. I got that backwards. It was because the Irish books category was severely underpopulated I added it. Shall I delete it? Is mise, Fergananim (talk) 14:52, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For the ones that are already in a better category - yes please! Cheers, Fayenatic (talk) 15:46, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Gaeilgeoir for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Gaeilgeoir is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gaeilgeoir until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Gnevin (talk) 18:11, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have no problem with the article deleted if it is found unfit, via our guidelines. All I hoped for was that other editors more erudite than I would find better sources than I could accrue. It deserves it. Fergananim (talk) 18:49, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contribution. Could you please return to your article and format the references correctly. The instructions are at WP:CITE. Thanks. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:12, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Questionable move on O'Flaherty[edit]

Why in the world did you make this move? He is know to the English speaking world as O'Flaherty not Ó Flaithearta. Don't you think a proposal and some sort of discussion appropriate before such a change? ~ Alcmaeonid (talk) 21:11, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • You're right, I should have done so. What do you propose? Fergananim (talk) 10:20, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • I suggest a move back to O'Flaherty since this is the name that is the most widely recognized. Mention of the (I assume Gaelic) Ó Flaithearta can be made more appropriately in the body of the article. What do you think? ~ Alcmaeonid (talk) 19:09, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
      • You're right. Will do soonest. Sorry for doing it, I got too enthused! Fergananim (talk) 23:08, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification (for Fergananim)[edit]

Hi, this message is to let you know about disambiguation links you've recently created. A link to a disambiguation page is almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Merge discussion[edit]

As the initiating ed. for Michael Bodkin, just a note that it appears to fail guidelines for a stand alone article. I have proposed it be merged with The Dead (short story). Discussion here.

Just noticed you also started Michael Feeney (schoolteacher). I have nominated it for merge with The Dead (short story) for similar reason. Discussion at Talk:The Dead (short story)#Merge. RashersTierney (talk) 13:01, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Style[edit]

Hello, Fergananim. I've noticed that you tend to start articles with a section consisting only of a sentence fragment; such as, "Eoghan Carrach Ó Siadhail, Gaelic-Irish poet, fl. c. 1500-1550." You might want to take a look at WP:LEDE; our preferred style is to have a brief introductory section, in full sentences, that provides an overview of the article. Thanks. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 21:20, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

DPL bot notifications[edit]

These notifications serve to inform you when you've added a link to a disambiguation page to an article, and probably didn't mean to. For instance, in the article Amhlaoibh Mór mac Fir Bhisigh, your edit here created a link to Descendant. But that links to a "Did you mean..." page. So we're hoping you can let us know what meaning of "descendant" you intended. (Myself, I'm not sure if it should go to lineal descendant, kinship, or just be unlinked.)

Let's say you chose the first option. You could then fix the disambig link by using a piped link: [[Lineal descendant|descendant]]. The article would still display "descendant", but the link would go to Lineal descendant.

Also, if you use Dab Solver, it helps do the piping for you.

Let me know if you're still confused by all this. Also, please feel free to just ignore/delete the messages, or opt out of them altogether. The messages are only intended to help you with your work, nothing more. Cheers, --JaGatalk 03:11, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Irish people of British descent[edit]

I have seen you adding "Category:Irish people of British descent" quite a few times. Often, there is no proof of this British descent. So why do you add this? Night of the Big Wind talk 05:52, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think I am reverting this odd category in 99% of all cases. Sorry, but this is more vandalism than useful. Please refrain from adding this link unless the article proof the British descent. Night of the Big Wind talk 16:59, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This bizarre category was added to the Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke article although as the page clearly states, she was born in the late 12th-century-well over 500 hundred years prior to the Act of Union! Additionally, she was born in Wales to an Irish mother and Norman father, so how it was reckoned she could accurately be categorised as an "Irish person of British descent" is beyond me! I hope you don't think I'm being rude or attacking you, Ferganinim, but I was honestly baffled by the category being applied to Isabel who was born in 1172!--Jeanne Boleyn (talk) 17:24, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, I must apologise for adding the category to far too many articles. Once again, my enthusiasm got the better of me. It would have being better if I created articles on the surnames concerned, all of which demonstrate British ancestry (I mean British in both sences - Cymric speakers from Strathclyde/Cumbria/Wales/Cornwall/Isle of Man, and people from the island of Britan). Breathnach, Walsh, Wallace, and related names belong in this broad category. I also included people who bore surnames of French or English surnames, or who had a parent or grandparent who was French or English, in similar categories. Regarding Isabel de Clare, I thought that as she was part-Welsh it would be obvious that she was of British descent. Shall I revert all the articles, or have you already done so? Thanks for your input, and especially your courtesy! Is mise, Fergananim (talk) 04:13, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I came across this category in a number of articles - too many to edit - where I think it should be removed as there is no basis for it in the articles concerned. Hohenloh + 12:25, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, what a lovely article! Are you planning on adding bio's to it? Cairpre Ua Lígda, for example, sounds interesting! Fergananim (talk) 00:59, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure there is enough information to create articles for them all. With some all is known is their names and death dates. It's possible with some others, such as the one you suggested, and Eógan mac Cinn Fáclad, son of King-abbot Cenn Fáelad hua Mugthigirn and Marcán mac Cennéitig, brother of High-King Brian Boru. Also I've just created another page, Abbot of Lismore. Scrivener-uki (talk) 01:43, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Abbot of Lismore article is just as excellent. I love these, as there is nowhere near enough articles on pre-12th (or even pre 19th!) century Ireland. Have you created other articles within this era? Fergananim (talk) 01:49, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm mainly concentrating on articles where are lists of abbots/bishops/archbishops/etc, which includes the pre-12th century. That is to say, those in Category:Irish abbots and Category:Lists of Irish bishops and archbishops. And where there is enough information, and if I'm in the mood, I create articles for each individual. Scrivener-uki (talk) 15:19, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Leo Bodkin has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article is a biography with very few reliable sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Garret Barry[edit]

I am not sure that your move to Gearoid de Barra was correct. The English form is clearly the WP:COMMONNAME and actualy the sources do not indicate whether he went by the English name or not, or indeed if the Irish name is a backformation to Irish. I think you should probably move it back, untill we have a source that makes sure that he actually used the irish form of the name. ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 00:22, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Ireland-related_articles#Naming_people is quite clear in showing that the English name is the preferred location here. None of the sources use the Irish name as the primary name. ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 00:25, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, the main source I used for the article was hAllmhuráin's "A pocket history of Irish traditional music". He gives the English name and the Irish in parentheses. Thanks for moving it back. ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 12:10, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Irene Lynch requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Bgwhite (talk) 07:19, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article James Harrold has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

We have a city employee who is not automatically notable. Only one reference goes into any detail about him. The other refs are quotes or statements of him doing his job, which doesn't do anything for nobility. There needs to be refs about him.

In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. As other editors have noted (above and in edit summaries), there seems to be some discomfort with your drive to copy/paste loosely related annalistic references into every town article for Ireland. Frankly I'm a little concerned about it myself. Per the WP:NOTEVERYTHING guidelines, it really doesn't seem in keeping with the project (to me) to have quotations from the annals just "copied and pasted" (with no context or anything) and randomly added to articles. If a place is mentioned in an annal, then it should really be included (in prose!) in the history section. With perhaps some context and a note about whether the annals are supported by any other historical or archaeological facts. Not just lumped in as an after thought - with no real indication to the reader about relevance, reality, etc. I recon you should consider moving all that stuff to Wikisource. Maybe as part of a "Annalistic references by Irish placename" - or similar. And then add a simple cross-link at the bottom of the town articles. Wikipedia isn't Wikisource. Hi. In your recent article edits, you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Removal of text from Irish people in Jamaica[edit]

Why have you removed that text from the article? I was going to revert but looking at your contribs, you're clearly not a vandal so I thought I'd ask you first. It seemed referenced and relevant to the article. Valenciano (talk) 09:14, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for the kind words! I removed them because none of the sources cited actually specify Irish slaves. The one article one the subject (http://www.historyjournal.ie/irish-slavery/57-irish-slavery-topics/113-irish-slaves-in-jamaica.html) confuses indenture with slavery and ignores the massive Irish emigration pre-1641 all over the West Indies. It talks of "indentured Irish slaves" in the first paragraph, then "indentured servants" and "Irish labourers" in the second - which is it, slaves or servants or labourers? Indentured Irish had a terrible time over there, but they choose to emigrate. They were not slaves. We all know that Cromwell transported Irish people to the West Indies, but they were prisoners, not slaves. I used to think that talk of Irish slaves over there was true but the more I research this the more it seems a mirage. Fergananim (talk) 09:25, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That seems fair enough then, but don't forget in future to put something in the edit summary like "removing dubiously referenced text, will explain on talk" otherwise recent changes patrollers may revert you. All the best, Valenciano (talk) 09:29, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. Ooops. Didn't know you were supposed to do that. Will do so henceforth. Thanks for the advice, always most welcome. Fergananim (talk) 11:11, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Joseph Rafferty (murder victim) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article subject is not notable and the entire article is non-sourced and contains controversial and unsubstantiated accusations against individuals or groups.

In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Proposed deletion of Joseph Rafferty (murder victim) and the articles you have created[edit]

I have removed my request for this article to be deleted, as the issues of my concern are being worked on. You have created several articles today about people that have been allegedly murdered by Irish Republicans. I would suggest that they be titled as "Murder of X" as in Murder of Robert McCartney. I would also suggest that you include the word "allegedly" if and when saying that they may have been murdered by X. That should be in the first sentence or two as that is why these people are notable by Wikipedia Standards. That being the case the Title should be "Murder of X". Also, may I suggest looking at Murder of Robert McCartney to see how it is formatted, sourced, and written and use it as a guide. I will try to make an effort to help improve these articles you have written and prevent them from ending up being deleted. With Thanks, King of Nothing (talk) 06:01, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Any and all help is much appreciated. Fergananim (talk) 06:10, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

References[edit]

Can you please read Template:Cite web and start formatting your references accordingly. It is not appropriate to simply add references into articles like this [2]. See here for an example of where I have fixed this for you. Have a nice day. Freikorp (talk) 06:18, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Please do not add categories to articles if the category is only a theory, as opposed to an accepted fact. For example, you added the category "People killed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army" to the article Murder of Joseph Rafferty. Yes, Rafferty's family believe he was murdered by the IRA, however, no one has ever been charged so by definition this is not an accepted fact, and accordingly you should not have added this category to the article. Mochua of Balla[edit]

While correcting some errors on the Balla article, I noticed that there were two articles on the local saint, Cronan Mochua, the older one, Mo Chua of Balla appeared more detailed, although it is copied verbatim from the Catholic encyclopaedia, and agrees with the archdiocese of Tuam web site. The second and newer article, Mo Chua was written by your good self, and many of the details of it are different from the other article. I have therefore redirected it to the older article. Perhaps you would be so good as to revisit your article and check which bits of it you wish to incorporate into the combined article. Kind regards.--File Éireann 20:58, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
