Thanks for all your great work User:KylieTastic!!! This one needs a lot of expansion but it's a start. Interesting guy. Some of the letters detailing his political activities and organizing is on the talk page. Thanks again. Happy Holidays. FloridaArmy (talk) 16:51, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. I didn't have the energy left today to do my normal source hunt and expansion as I'm still recovering from two weeks of fever and I was getting confused by all the other Charles William Anderson's, but I agree an interesting subject and I'm sure there is a lot more to be added. It was good enough to get out as I wasn't sure I'd find time to get back to it, hopefully some others will pick it up and improve. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 17:36, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

User:Timtrent what is an eventual name? I'm open to handling disambig differently but Harry Eaton currently redirect to marginally notable Ronald Eaton. I guess I can change the target to Harry B. Eaton and add a disambig hatnote there. On the other hand the painter seems pretty notable and went by C. Harry Eaton. FloridaArmy (talk) 16:56, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Harry Eaton (disambiguation), perhaps? I mean the name it will, in due course, be accepted as 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 18:36, 26 November 2022 (UTC)
Harry Eaton (legislator) seems the best, if he wasn't normally known as Harry B. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:22, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
His article is submitted for the name Harry B. Eaton. Draft:Harry Eaton is submitted as a disambig page. I don't knownwhy the disambig page would be at (disambiguation). If there isn't to be a disambig page then I will just change the redirect to Harry B. and add a hatnoted to Ronald Eaton, the current redirect. I don't know why this needs to be so complicated. Hey, I tried to finish off African-American_officeholders_during_and_following_the_Reconstruction_era#Florida_State_Senate - I started Draft:Washington Pope but after an hour and a half of looking I can find nothing more than statements that he served. If you can find anything then please add, if not I may just publish as is. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 15:54, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

User:KylieTastic I thought there might be some coverage in this book but it doesn't appear so. I will check my hard copy when I locate it.. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:29, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

  • Hi, I have a copy of Freedom's Lawmakers and do use it to start a new article from, unfortunately for Pope it is just 2 lines "Pope, Washington (dates unknown) Served as county commissioner, Jackson County, Florida 1870-73, and in state Senate, 1873-76." and that's all! For once Eric has let us down. The trouble with a newspapers search is Washington and Pope are common words so a huge number of false hits. floridamemory also did not help for once, just this basic listing, and another listing in "The People of Lawmaking in Florida 1822 – 2019" that I used. One elusive senator! KylieTastic (talk) 17:40, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Sorry User:KylieTastic, I posted the wrong link. this is the book I meant to post. Canter Brown Jr.'s. Florida was a bit of a backwater. I don't think the early papers covering these subjects have been digitized and I don't know how many have been preserved. Hopefully someday soon we'll get there. :) FloridaArmy (talk) 17:48, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
As your probably know, Foner's Freedom's Lawmakers leaves out a tremendous number from various states. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:50, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
I will do some digging in Newspapers. S0091 (talk) 17:58, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks FloridaArmy, at least that book gave a YOB and farmer, and a third source which also will help fend of any deletionists - and thanks S0091. Cheers KylieTastic (talk)
One other source to check for this and other similar subjects would be Joe M. Richardson's The Negro in the Reconstruction of Florida, 1865-1877 Florida State University (1965) which appears to have been reissued (revised and updated?) as African Americans in the Reconstruction of Florida, 1865-1877 University of Alabama Press (2008). No idea if either version is online or accessible online. FloridaArmy (talk) 19:11, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
I did not find anything in Newspapers, or NewspaperArchive. Given he was in the Florida panhandle thought there might be something in Alabama or Georgia, but nothing. I came across these in Google Books: this has a possible photo (not helpful for the article but interesting to see a photo) and this which states he was "the first Democratic representative in the general assembly from Jackson County, following military government in 1867...". I don't know what "military government" really means. FA, do you have any clue? S0091 (talk) 20:50, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Military government refers to Union Army officials and federal officials more generally. There was a transition back to state sovereignty and voting rights for X Confederates (who pretty uniformly were Democrats). The photo is interesting. The original should be accessible from the Florida Archives? Is it on Wikipedia Commons? I notice the second source, from 1950, identifies a fellow senator as "Negro" but not Pope. It's certainly noteworthy if he was a Democrat. 21:39, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
I found nothing in the Internet Archive except the already referenced Florida's Black Legislators, nothing at Newspapers.com (which does not appear to have indexed Florida at all during the relevant years), and nothing through the Wikipedia Library. BD2412 T 21:48, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
  • The photo is also (fuller version) here. I didn't see it on Wikipedia Commons but searching there can be flukey. Florida Memory is given as the source which is the state archive. The photo is also here in another version. If he were a Democrat I don't onow why he would be amongst that group. FloridaArmy (talk) 21:55, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
  • It's worth noting that abbreviations were often used in 19th century. W. Pope? FloridaArmy (talk) 22:10, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
I did look for W. Pope but did not find anything that I could concretely identify as the same person (i.e. nothing about a politician, etc.). S0091 (talk) 22:20, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:25, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Blaze Wolf per WP:NPOL, they are notable and is one of the exceptions to GNG. S0091 (talk) 20:28, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
I see that, however I do not feel comfortable accepting this article since there's practically nothing in it. I understand that if an article has a greater than 50% chance of surviving a deletion discussion then it can be approved via AFC, however there's practically nothing to this article other than "he was a politician and has a historical marker in some random town". ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:33, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
Also, in what you linked I'm not seeing anything that says it's an exception to GNG ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:35, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
You are right, it does not explicitly say it is an exception but from an AfD perspective they are. See Veo Easley, Gilbert F. Smith, Herman B. DeCell and J. P. Scales for other examples, all which also passed NPP. I understand you may not be comfortable accepting these so I suggest skipping them rather than declining because FA will simply resubmit them. S0091 (talk) 20:46, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
To my knowledge specific notability criteria like this are often simply additions to GNG and they still need to qualify as notable per GNG. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:48, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
See below. FA already resubmitted and it was accepted. You will the see the same theme above in others that were declined. S0091 (talk) 20:54, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
See also WP:POLOUTCOMES. To be clear, I am not chastising you for declining or anything like that so I hope you are not taking it that way. I am glad you are now a AfC reviewer (see you around Teahouse, etc.) and think you will do an excellent job. S0091 (talk) 21:09, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

I would just add that he served in the North Carolina House and Senate. He was African American. And serving in the state senate in 1889 he would have been one of the last African Americans to hold state office before the Jim Crow era. Original research of course but there are good reasons to include state legislators especially African Americans on Wikipedia. FloridaArmy (talk) 21:13, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

None of that means anything to me. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:16, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
