marking mentees' userpages

Hey Fluffernutter! This is just a quick reminder: please be sure to add {{WAP student}} (for an example, see User:Sfofana) the user pages of your mentees. And once they are working on articles, be sure to tag the talk pages with {{WAP assignment}}. Cheers--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:47, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

hi, i'm researching about the game for a project and i saw your thing about losethegame.com last week. i replied but may be you didnt see it. i read the news stories at the end of the article and they all interview the losethegame website for information. if metro and candian press use it i think it's good enough for my project. but don't you think if these big news corps interview this website, and we use there stories to make this article, maybe you should keep the link? i guess thats why the link was there already. can you reply at the game talk page because i don't want to make a wikipedia account. thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.255.1.87 (talk) 07:57, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Mentoring students: be sure to check in on them

This message is going out to all of the Online Ambassadors who are, or will be, serving as mentors this term.

Hi there! This is just a friendly reminder to check in on what your mentees are doing. If they've started making edits, take a look and help them out or do some example fixes for them, if they need it. And if they are doing good, let them know it!

If you aren't mentoring anyone yet, it looks like you will be soon; at least one large class is asking us to assign mentors for them, and students in a number of others haven't yet gotten to asking ambassadors to be their mentors, but may soon. --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:06, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Online Ambassador Program

Please take a look at this project page and see if you can be a mentor to one of the many Areas of Study. If you can, please put your name in the "Online Mentor" area of the Area of Study of your choice and then contact the students you will be working with. As the Coordinating Online Ambassador for this project, please let me know if I can be of assistance. Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 04:28, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Thanks! --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:11, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Please help assess articles for Public Policy Initiative research

Hi Fluffernutter/Archive 3,

Your work as an Online Ambassador is making a big contribution to Wikipedia. Right now, we're trying to measure just how much student work improves the quality of Wikipedia. If you'd like contribute to this research and get a firsthand look at the quality improvement that is happening through the project, please sign up to assess articles. "Harvey" mannequin

Thanks for your edits to the "Harvey" mannequin article and fixing the references to something that worked. I have been working with a High School student on his first article and he was trying to trouble shoot what he had done when he added the gallery. It was an improperly placed "}}" when he moved the gallery location and did not "preview" the edit. Sorry we were moving so slow. I did revert the reference list back to the previous format per WP:LDR since that was much easier for Andy to read and edit that the more traditional reference style. Just wanted to let you know why I did it... Thanks --Gene Hobbs (talk) 17:38, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

No problem with your revert of the reference style - I didn't even know the style you're using existed, but apparently it does, and as long as it's not throwing reference errors (which is how I landed on the page - the broken gallery was making ref errors appear and the page pop up in a category I monitor), I'm happy! Hope I didn't step on your toes jumping in to make the fix. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 17:51, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
It was actually great! I had told him that someone would check behind him and help with minor corrections or better wording so he should be bold and write. He did not preview change before he posted and I was setting up for another class and did not see it. Proved the system works! Thanks! --Gene Hobbs (talk) 19:39, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Horacio Gutierrez

I seriously want to know what makes you so obsessively and repeatedly change the article about Horacio Gutierrez? Has he offended or harm you in any way? If you want to create a valuable and helpful article about a pianist, why don't you do some real research instead of posting some cheap information about his health problems. Also , posting the press articles about his cancellations instead of posting a few great reviews , which Mr.Gutierrez receives from all major music critics , also makes me think that instead of creating a helpful Wiki Article about a pianist, you want to create a page with information more suitable for cheap newsstand papers. This information is not helpful in any way for a person interested in Gutierrez's music. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.125.58.89 (talk) 16:56, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism patch up jobs

Hi. Yes point taken. Usually when dealing with a topic in which I have no specialist knowledge I just do a quick patch up job on the more obvious, recent edits and hope that the experts will tackle longer term or more subtle problems. Obviously this approach is not ideal, and prehaps I should think twice before touching articles that have clear long term issues. The trouble is, when ploughing through dozens of edits on vandalism patrol, and without specialist knowledge it's not always easy to spot longer term problems. Advice on this would be welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prunesqualer (talkcontribs) 14:35, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Yeah I don't think it's any reflection on your abilities at all. I almost did the same thing on that page before someone reminded me to check the history when I revert and I went, "Ohhhh. Hey, look at that!" So let this be a reminder to both of us that hey, histories can be useful :) 14:39, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

For the record: no, I'm not a paid editor (the comment farther up on the page was a note someone left me to remind me to read that page for a report I am working on), and no, I don't work for a PR firm. I'm a regular old wikipedia editor who monitors the incoming edits to the encyclopedia for problems - in your case, Athena, you've been blanking out content from articles with no explanation. If you disagree with information in an article, the best thing to do is to bring it up on the article's talk page. Blanking it with no explanation has every appearance of being vandalism - someone trying to damage the encyclopedia just for fun - and is not tolerated. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! questions..

Hello, Thank you for correcting the article that I edited "Beefsteak (Banquet) The content that I provided was taken from an interview with Mr. Giresi in preparation for an article that was submitted to "The Bergen Record" This was part of a project for a college writing course. I noticed that the NY Times article had been quoted. Is there a different format that I need to use, or is it out of the question? I will reread the infomation that you submitted regarding contributions. Thank you for your help. Creative Arts Services — Preceding unsigned comment added by CreativeArtsServices (talkcontribs) 19:05, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I removed the content because it wasn't cited to anything (if the information appeared in a newspaper, you need to cite that newspaper when you add the content. If it hasn't appeared yet, it really can't be added, because there's nothing to prove it's true) and because the content appeared to be mostly promoting a business. We use encyclopedic wording, which means that phrasing like "over 50 years of experience in the business and offers a unique spin on the traditional feast" and "REAL AA quality BUTTER" come across as advertising Giresi's business, not providing encyclopedic information about the topic of beefsteaks. In addition, unless there are reliable sources saying that Giresi's business is very important to the concept of beefsteaks, a whole paragraph discussing him is not called for in the article. We're not a yellowpages, basically, so unless a business is integral to the concept being discussed, there's not really any reason to name them. Finally, we try to minimize our use of direct quotations when a rephrasing would work, especially in cases like this where the direct quote reads like advertising, so the fact that the content you added was almost entirely quotes didn't help either. Non-promotional material flagged as promotional

Thank you for leaving feedback on the page Riviera Nayarita. Can you please tell me which sections of the page you would consider "promotional" so that I can fix this? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Msilverpr (talkcontribs) 19:03, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Sure. Phrasing like "Mexico’s newest vacation destination" and "An exclusive gated resort" and the general tone of the content you added makes it sound like you are trying to advertise for your resort, rather than writing an encyclopedia. We strive to make our content neutral rather than promotional. In addition, you overwrote what was an article on a geographical area with content about a resort. I can see that you put a lot of work into drafting up what you added, but it's going to need a fairly major rewrite to change it's tone from "Hey, come book a vacation here!" to "Here is some information about an area of encyclopedic interest."
In addition, it looks to me like you may have copied some or all of the content you added from here. If this is the case, you need to know that we cannot accept copyrighted material from other sites, due to legal licensing issues. Any content you add to the article must be original text, not copied from elsewhere. Since it's a legal issue, we take that very seriously, and if we find copyright violation material in articles, we usually have to delete it, and sometimes we have to block the user who added it if they keep adding it despite being told of our policies.
Hope this info helps! A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 19:13, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

New messages at random places in the middle of the page may well be missed. GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

Help with speaking English

Hi Fluffy, Thanks for the advice(!) I'm British and so are 60 million other people. I think I know how to spell colour thank you very much x — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.152.244.230 (talk) 18:00, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm sure you're very good at spelling and English, but the fact remains that it's not appropriate to change spellings on Wikipedia the way you did. As long as you implement British spellings only on British articles (or articles that are written in British English), you should be fine, but if you keep changing them on other articles, you could run into trouble. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 18:06, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Fluffernutter; on the edit to the introduction you reverted an assertion that's borne out by the citation that follows, that the subject never served in the army. I think the passage could be re-added and rephrased to meet NPOV. Thanks, 99.0.82.226 (talk) 18:09, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Hm, I'm not really involved or willing to get involved with the article at the moment - I just reverted it to the last version I could find from before that epic edit-war started up. Your best option is probably to propose your change on the article's talk page and see if people who watch the article have an opinion about whether to re-insert that material. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 18:12, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm not involved there either, but both the article and the talk page appear to be long-term battlegounds, with the article's subject or someone sympathetic persistently removing such information. Since I can't edit the article, I'm just asking that you have another look at the source, and the claim which links to it. Cheers, 99.0.82.226 (talk) 18:15, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

A vandal has repeatedly edited the Harold Covington article with false information claiming he was in the Rhodesian Military. The source that cites this says that he was not. The discussion page for this article has been repeatedly vandalized as well.

http://books.google.com/books?id=kbKJU3e59MsC&pg=PA45&dq=Covington++%22Rhodesian+Army%22&hl=en&ei=VRh0TP–DMKB8gbFyqj2CA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCsQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Covington%20%20%22Rhodesian%20Army%22&f=false — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk) 18:06, 19 July 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk)

As I said above, the correct thing to do now is to STOP REVERTING EACH OTHER (for those of you who have been) and TALK. On the article's talk page. Not here, and not by undoing each other's edits, but on Talk:Harold Covington and using actual words. Continuing to revert - on the article or on the talk page - will only get you blocked for edit warring. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 18:20, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Indeed. I've supported the above contention at the article talk page--as it stands the source contradicts current text. But the point here is to double check connections between content and sources before reverting. 99.0.82.226 (talk) 18:23, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

I've tried to use the talk page but my posted are deleted from there and the page continues to be changed by someone else. Obviously they don't want to talk about it and only want to have an edit war. I've tried to have other mods lock the article but they havent taken action. It's blatant vandalism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk) 18:26, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

As I've already said, repeatedly, your dispute will not be resolved here. You must engage on the article's talk page. I have neither the power nor the willingness to fix this dispute for you; you have to do it yourself, by discussing with your fellow editors. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 18:48, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

I can't dispute this with a biased editor who only wants to further someone's image instead of provide accurate information. The article is locked anyway. I didn't think that it would take a genius to see that he hasn't served in the Rhodesian military. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk) 18:57, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

I already posted this issue in the discussion a few days ago by the way. Instead of a dicussion it was deleted and the article was continually vandalized. What do you suggest I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.47.11.81 (talk) 19:09, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedia Stories Project

Hi,

My name is Victor Grigas and I'm a Storyteller at the Wikimedia Foundation. We're exploring new ways to explain why Wikipedia is so special and we’ve started a Wikipedia Stories Project, where we’re chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community, especially editors and active contributors in the movement like you. I'll be traveling to Wikimania next month to collect stories for our 2011 Fundraiser. While there I'd love the chance to meet with you and hear your thoughts about Wikipedia. We’ll have a schedule of available times for you to sign up if you’re interested, but right now, we’d like to make the initial contact to gauge your interest. Please let me know by emailing me at vgrigas@wikimedia.org or responding on my talk page.

thank you,

Hi!

Thank you for getting back to me so promptly! I look forward to speaking with you. We're going to have 45 minute time slots available to us at Wikimania, so scheduling will be key. At your earliest convenience, I'd like to have a chat over the phone or over Skype to go over the topics we will discuss in the interview. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

See you in Haifa!

I'm not a huge fan of Skype calls (or phones - both make me nervous!). If it's possible, I'd rather do it through text - google talk or irc, or even just Skype IM would work for me. Any chance of one of those instead? A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 23:07, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Hello Fluffernutter, I have been editing the Chuck Muth page. I was not familiar with the coatrack issue. My intention was not to make the page a coatrack. The content I am including is relavent to Muth's political career. If possible could you explain to me how I can include this information without making it a coatrack. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Poseidon246 (talkcontribs) 21:03, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Muth Page Revision

Hello Fluffernutter, I have been editing the Chuck Muth page. The information I've included was not meant to be a coatrack. It is relevant information in Muth's political career. Could you give me some pointers so that it will not be a coatrack? Thanks.

Poseidon246 (talk) 21:06, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I'm not sure if there's a way to add the information you want to add without it being a coatrack. Basically, the Muth article is supposed to be about Muth. The stuff you're adding is about another person, who has some vague link to Muth but isn't Muth, and you're adding a whole paragraph about how that other person is bad and committed crimes, etc. This has nothing to do with Muth unless Muth was involved in the crimes. The only connection to Muth at all in the text you're adding is that Muth supposedly "took up the cause" of this other guy. What does that mean? What bearing does it have on Muth and his career? Does it have anything to do with his political career? Is it really a notable event in the overarching career of Muth, or is it just a matter of his name having been linked with someone who got in trouble? Are you adding it because you think the event is important to Muth's story, from a neutral perspective, or because you think Muth should be punished in some form for "taking up the cause" of someone who committed illegal acts?
Basically, what you're adding is, in its current form, never going to be ok to put in the Muth article. It's possible that, with some extensive re-working, you could come up with something that explains why the information is relevant to Muth and add a sentence about the situation, but right now there's nothing in what you added that seems to show that the information is relevant to Muth. What does No evident notability mean?. My contributions are being deleted but I just cant seem to correct the problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marigen1971 (talkcontribs) 02:39, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, that means that the article you created doesn't give any evidence for why the topic is notable - that is, why it's important that an encyclopedia include information on that topic. You can read our notability policy for some more information, but in plain English, your article needs to say why the subject (the anthology, etc) is important. Why do people know about it or care about it? Was it highly-reviewed? Was it featuring someone famous? Was a book written about it's awesomeness? You need to include something to that effect, linking to a reliable source that proves that it's a notable topic. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 03:15, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Ann Rule's Wikipedia Site re: Rick Swart

I am the web author for Ann Rule. I am not a Wikipedia editor. Friday July 22nd was my first time trying to interact within Wikipedia on a level other than just reading various topics. I saw an entry on Ann Rule's Wikipedia site that was "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libelous or harmful." I found a way to remove it. I now know there are more proper (and quite well documented) ways to go about addressing this sort of thing.

Rick Swart's References on Ann Rule's Wikipedia site need to be removed. It has been discovered by the "source" (Seattle Weekly)and by one of Wikipedia editors that Rick Swart's article was at least flawed and "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced". Please remove the 2 links on Ann Rule's Wikipedia Reference Section. They are truly more about Rick Swart than Ann Rule. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raineywebtech (talkcontribs) 01:27, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm sorry to inform you that the subject of an article has no more control over its content than any other user. In fact, per our policy on editing with a conflict of interest, you really should avoid editing the Ann Rule article at all. In general, if you have a concern over article content that relates to a living person, the best place to raise it (as an article's talk page may have low or no-traffic) is the BLP noticeboard. While you are welcome to start and participate in these discussion, at the end of the day, inclusion of content is based on reliable sources, and verifiability; as an editorial decision, and is not under either yourself, or Ms. Rule's control, as you seemed to believe in this edit. Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

Conflicts of interest -- practices for editors and what's good for Wikipedia?

Hi -- Heard your wikimania talk on editors with conflicts-of-interest. I tried to start a discussion on this at Wikipedia_talk:Best_practices_for_editors_with_conflicts_of_interest and put an example COI statement on my user page. Nobody replied. I'd be happy to collect examples of how editors handle this, make a list, work with others to define a standard good practice. If you can point me to an appropriate place to write it I'll get started. My own attempt flopped! so please lead in a constructive direction. My conflicts are relatively trivial but the general topic is interesting and relevant. Possibly I'll want to avoid a vast policy discussion and just research existing practices and recommend for and against some. -- Econterms (talk) 10:10, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
