Frontline[edit]

I will add the journalist awards section for sure. I just wanted other's views also to be spaced there , which was not happening with Frontline as well as other Hindu group articles entry, if you have a look at the discussions page you could get a better idea about the point I'm trying to put.--Sahyadhri (talk) 10:03, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While you are in it, some information may be already there in the History of Kolkata article. Also, some info can be assimilated there (so that we don't have to assimilate that info to Kolkata article). Thanks for the job.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:52, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

100,000 seat sporting venues[edit]

I've started a new sporting venue list here for all sporting venues. Take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks. Patken4 (talk) 21:21, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. Regarding only doing those stadiums that are currently 100,000 or more, I wanted the list to look at this from both a current and historical point of view. So even if a stadium is currently less than 100,000, at one point it did have a capacity that high, regardless of the circumstances surrounding. I did move Strahov Stadium to the historical stadium list. As for adding the states, I don't know how much value it would add. Thanks again! Patken4 (talk) 21:14, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Book cover image[edit]

Hi! Please see the description and licensing of the following image: Image:Chander pahar cover.JPG. You will get to know.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:44, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did you upload the cover image?--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:03, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now, now...that's a tough question. Have a look at WP:IUP. In most of the cases, images in most website are not free for use. FlickR has a Creative Commons category which often gives usable images.
Infrequently, some websites states that they abide by creative commons rules, and many of their images can be used.
Again, some images are old enough so that their copyright has expired (hence they are in public domain), whatever may be the website hosting them.
Images from certain domain are absolutely free, for example, all the USA government sites, including government agencies such as NASA. But images from Indian government websites are not free for use.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:26, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bengali wikipedia[edit]

Would you be interested to look into the Bengali wikipedia too? There are about 2 or 3 editors from WB who contribute there ... which is a very small number :( . Since most of the volunteers are from Bangladesh, we now have a complete representation of Bangladesh-related topics there, but relatively less coverage of WB. So, if you can, please take a look. You might have to configure your system for viewing unicode Bangla text. Other than that, there should be no special requirements ... we have a built in phonetic Bangla keyboard there. --Ragib (talk) 04:25, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I'm fine with your removal of "Bangladeshi writers" type categories from the author pages ... for people born in what is now Bangladesh, I add the category for the home district of the person. For example, if someone was born in Kushtia District, I add the Category:Kushtia District to the article. That categorization is independent of the country (i.e. British India, Bengal, East Bengal/Pakistan, Bangladesh, West Bengal/India issues).--Ragib (talk) 04:27, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with that or even "Bangladesh-born writers", but claiming for example Achintyakumar Sengupta as a Bangladeshi writer or Bangladeshi Hindu is a bit too much. I'll add the district thing as far as possible. Thanks.GDibyendu (talk) 04:30, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The default font in XP (vrinda) is to be blamed for the "small font problem". Just get some better fonts like "Bangla" or "Solaimanlipi" from http://www.omicronlab.com or http://www.ekushey.org , and change the display font for Bangla in your browser. --Ragib (talk) 06:44, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of million plus cities in India[edit]

Well this article is misleading- the title is list of million plus cities in India, and then there is a caveat, the data relates to 2001 census and there is a proposal mentioned here that the list not be changed till 2011, and the data is also of 2001.

In today's world it is misleading to have 7 year old data and use it to freeze an online article that people are going to use for referncing in an encyclopedia, if it has to be frozen the article title should be changed to " List of million plus cities in India in 2001".- Your thougts please. Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 04:33, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Automation[edit]

Hi, I noticed your message on Tirunecherian's talk page. Please go through WP:BOTS and Creating a bot pages that explain how bots can be used on Wikipedia. I have run bots and can help you out with any questions. You will need to create a seperate bot account, for example, User:GDibyenduBot and get it approved for the task (for example project assement, see Ganeshbot BRFA). Then you can use the account to make automated edits using WP:AWB. The plugin helps automate project banner tagging using WP:AWB. Hope that helps. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 20:23, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your question on TC's talk page, you can write bots in Python, Perl, .Net for which libraries are available. But most tasks don't need coding and can be accomplished by running WP:AWB. For doing what you ask, you can use "Links on page" feature, enter "Padma Bhushan" and then choose, Add category option to the add the category and skip the articles where the category already exists. Let me know if you have any questions, Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 20:46, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is a bot requests page where non-technical people can request for automation and programmers help out with the requests using WP:AWB or some additional coding. AWB also allows for coding (see custom modules) if you know .NET or C#. Regards, Ganeshk (talk)

WikiProject films peer review of Pather Panchali[edit]

Pather Panchali, an Indian film directed by Satyajit Ray, is one of the Core articles in wikiproject film. The article is at the WikiProject Films' peer review section here. Please provide inputs. Thanks a lot. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:44, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also tried Japanese sites on Kinema Junpo, but even google translations are not adequately helpful to find out the archives. Will have to ask some Japanese for help.
Regarding the "cast" section, I personally do not have any preference. Wikiproject films style guidelines recommends a separate section on "cast". However, at the same time, it cites some film FAs that do not have separate cast section, and introduces the cast within the "plot" section, as does Pather Panchali now.
You can do one thing, state that you have removed "cast" section in the film peer review (link provided in the earlier message). Let's see what do the guys of the film project have to say. If they say it's ok, that's fine. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:32, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Asked for help from Nippon :)--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:40, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Added another paragraph in Legacy. See how do you like it. The rationale behind this para is - I thought the legacy of Pather Panchali (director's first film) on teh director's subsequent ventures should be mentioned. However the last para does not really say anything on the effect/reflection of Panchali on his nexts. I am trying to find some sources (I came across once some days ago) which would prove the adequacy of this last para.
Moreover, the paragraph describes in very short the development of Ray to an auteur. IMO, this is needed. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:41, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Added source and accordingly modified the legacy section. Actors in later life—something on their professional life may be acceptable. Regarding articles for Subir Banerjee and Chunibala Devi, those already exists. Acting in the role of a enotable character in a notable film is adequate for having articles, i guess.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:02, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pather Panchali plot[edit]

I was thinking about totally changing the plot section, and describe it as it unfolded in the film, rather than the present rambling form. What do you think? Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:01, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see User:Dwaipayanc/sandbox15. An effort to create a descriptive plot has been started. Please help. Later, two versions can be compared. --Dwaipayan (talk) 12:37, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I shall ask in the PR if this approach is what someone is asking for (descriptive detail). However, the alternate version is far from being complete. I have forgot details :(
Oh yes, I have noticed the stubs. and also the expansion that Banshi Chandragupta underwent recently. Great work, indeed. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:49, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Had a go at the plot, condensing, and removing details. Please have a look. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:48, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pather Panchali received the award in "Stratford Festival", as mentioned in several sites, such as this and this NYT archive. But what it is (the festival), none has clearly mentioned. Indeed this is intriguing. The only notable Stratford festival is the Stratford Festival. No separate film festival I could find in the web. That's why I made that wikilink. If the festival from where Pather.. won the award is not this Stratford Festival, then what is it? What is that festival? Any clue?--Dwaipayan (talk) 08:52, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But the Film Festival was a part of the Stratford Festival, per the "Stratford Festival Production History (1953-1999)" in the appendix of this book.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:48, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bur at the beginning it was not a Shakepearian one, it was just "Stratford Festival". The epithet Shakespeare was added much later, very recently.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:20, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, I saw the book you just referred, that the film festival was moved to Toronto. So, the wikilinking is wrong in teh article. The proper link would be Stratford Film Festival.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:21, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Girolamo's reviews[edit]

Hi! Yes I saw your edits. I am doing some edits now (those which are easily addressable). Will do more tomorrow.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:07, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did that "first Indian cinema to receive international attention" bit; also added several translations of the title. However, IMO, "auteurs" sentence is ok. Let's see how Girolamo responds.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:32, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scenes[edit]

Started work on the Scenes of the film here. If finally the section turns out ok, it can be included in the article. But it's huge now. Please help. --Dwaipayan (talk) 13:40, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at the Themes section of Tenebrae (film). The themes section there has several subsections. Somehow we can accomodate the scenes in Pather Panchali in some similar fashion. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:43, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Digboi[edit]

I am not very sure about Digboi and Digboi Oil Town merger/ otherwsie. At the time of transfer of matter from Ganeshbot sandbox, I had kept them separate because they were so treated in the Census. There must have been some reason behind it, but I could not find it. I think the merger tag can be ignored for the present until some one suggests a good reason for the same. Field parameter[edit]

I noticed you have assessed many articles with the field parameter. I currently don't have a easy way to find the distinct list of the "fields" that you have used. Regarding declaration of my new article of the India Rockstar[edit]

Hi Baabu Moshyy, hami tere dewaane.

Hey bro i have received ur message regarding the modifications made in the Himesh Reshammiya article.

I accept the presentation was not upto the mark but i want to do new work on it. As the current one is totally irrelevant, out-dated information regarding the Indian youth rockstar Sir Himesh Reshammiya Ji.

My aim is to provide something fresh and new and update article.

And u have completely removed it ! What is this ?

Rather than just simply removing it, u could have done some sort of team work for further improvement of the Sir Himesh Reshammiya Ji article which u have marked it as the B-Class.

Neither the article has an embedded photo of the Indian rockstar.

Even the upcoming films are also not self-detailed and informative . e.g. (Mud Mud Ke Na Dekkh Mud Mud Ke , Kabhi Bhi Kahin Bhi)

Its a disrespect and an C-Class insult to the Himesh Ji !

Hope u will improve atleast the current article by providing extra info.

So kindly do it !

Jai mata di lets rock "GDibyendu" !

Re[edit]

Discussed with the creator of the template, User:Blofeld of SPECTRE. It actually does not even need to be discussed; the template is not relevant in actor and film articles - nothing links to it. The Bollywood and regional industry templates serve as navigation boxes because they link to lists that include the film articles, while this one contains mostly categories, and therefore should be linked there. ShahidTalk2me 18:07, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, there are two kinds of templates.
A) Template in which the subject is included. For example, a template of one director's films is included in the films, and in each film article, the title is blackened within the template.
B) Navigation templates, like Bollywood etc.
Now, what "see also" links are you talking about? The links in the template do not add any information about the films - they are essentially categories, and thus should be placed in categories.
That was the case with a similar template of US films, which is now placed only in cat pages.
Apart from that, I had discussed it with the creator of this template, the one who had been actually adding them. ShahidTalk2me 18:19, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good to note that this is not a matter of consensus, but a matter of fact; the template shouldn't have been added from the beginning. ShahidTalk2me 18:22, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well I don't mean he is the only one - I was also adding and maybe you. That's not the case, you should familiarise yourself with the new standard of these templates. This has to be used in Award articles, film studios, film festivals. And that's something that was discussed by many people regarding a similar template.
I'm not doing things without basis. Please see {{CinemaoftheUS}}, that was a big concern when this template was being added to multiple film and actor articles. As a result, a discussion took place, and subsequently the use of this template was defined. The standard on Wikipedia is similar for all the templates of the same type. Please note that before reverting someone's work in the unpleasant way you have done that now. ShahidTalk2me 18:34, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Dear friend, I'm just a human being, and I'm allowed to make mistakes. If you figure out some, please revert it (and use an edit summary - something you did not do, and you must do in such cases). We are here to help each other.
Both these templates were created by Blof. When the new rule was conducted, it was implemented on American films, but not on here. These tempates are of the same kind. They have nothing to do with the task force, which is a project for matters within the project. The templates are related to WP:FILMS.
Now please turn your questions elsewhere, you can go and present the argument to Blof himself. I'm not interested to go on with this discussion. ShahidTalk2me 18:50, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Undoing at Sabarna Roy Choudhury[edit]

Dear Sir, I'm not "Madam". No doubtly Sabarna Roy Choudhury family is muy important in Calcutta, but bald statements must be support by primary reference from RS. VOlumes by Sukanta Chaudhuri, Samaren Roy etc on Calcutta do not support the article which is written by a member of the family to promote their commercial activities. The article as you have left it is very POV. The article is muy poorly citationed for DYK. [LillyCottage] 212.227.114.82 (talk) 19:40, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:geography tagging[edit]

Hi, the articles which fall under cities group need not be under geography group too. Do you agree? Thanks. --GDibyendu (talk) 08:09, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Actually...I don't. The whole point of creating a taskforce is to collect all the articles that are part of the group...not exclude articles that fall under child projects. I generally don't see harm in additional tagging. Ideally...I would prefer the banner not even show up on the talk page and the wikiproject categories totally hidden. This would solve the eternal banner and category spam complaints. :) But that is just my opinion. :) Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 02:15, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Additional taskforces[edit]

You had asked somewhere why we should not go ahead and create food and other wikiprojects. We should create taskforces only if there are sufficient number of people voluteering to work under it. In-active wikiprojects will tagged as such. The field parameter allows for creating stats tables without actually creating a wikiproject. Hope that clarifies. Regarding maps.[edit]

He GDibyendu! Nice to see a message from you. I do create maps on Wikipedia and created 2 state maps for NE states of State of Tripura and State of Nagaland. But for locator maps I am a novice. Most of the locator maps for India are made by PlaneMad and some by Nichalp. These locator maps need intricate knowledge of cartography as they take in consideration co-ordinates of the four corner of the map area. I think the reason for the selecting an entire area of north-east is that for creating these types of maps we need equi-rectangular area. Since most of the state are small in size I think Planemad might have used all states together. BTW, I appreaciate your great work on these state articles as they are in need of some serious hard work. Keep up the good work ! --gppande «talk» 11:50, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perl[edit]

Hi I notice you are a perl programmer. I'm not good at programming, and my perl knowledge is limited to the last three days. I'm trying to create a script of my own based on the Commons:File upload service/Script. For some strange reasons it is not working. Would you have the time to have a look at it? Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 10:00, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I've put up the code on User:Nichalp/code. I want to use the script to upload images along with metadata. This metadata is created in a spreadsheet with the following fields:
  1. Image name
  2. Description
  3. Date
  4. Permission
  5. Other versions
  6. Latitude
  7. Longitude
  8. Region
  9. Type
  10. Heading
  11. Category

The above fields are stored in a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file

In addition, I store my username and password in the perl script itself. The output should be as shown in User:Nichalp/code#Output text. From what I understood, the script should read the csv line, match the first column with an existing filename, and then upload the file along with the metadata.

There are several problems:

  1. The file refuses to run. No error specified.
  2. I can't ignore the header line in the CSV file
  3. So far all the fields are compulsory. Haven't figured a way of making some optional yet.

Thanks for offering to look into it.

Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 10:24, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Followup[edit]

Am not sure. :( I use Ubuntu Linux, and the original script works when I run it. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:13, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hope the change from "Tennis Grand Slam win by a woman" to "Woman beyond 1st round in a Tennis Grand Slam event" was more a change prompted by nuances of the language, rather than technicalities of the tennis grand slam event. I still feel "win" is the basic, simple achievement than any "round" formats. Jay (talk) 14:16, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perl code II[edit]

Hi! Could you help me out again with Perl? I'm trying a different script this time, its a lot simpler: (User:Nichalp/code2). I've put up the code there and the contents of the CSV file. The code works fine except for two instances of not effecting a switch.

In the coordinate field I need a switch; If a user enters d, it formats as per the decimal coordinate system (eg 19.45 52.32). If the user wants a dms system (degree, min, sec), he enters dms in the coordinate field. In case of a blank field, the default reverts to the decimal. But what's happening here is that if I enter dms or leave it blank, it gives a bizzare output (that of $geo_reference). It only works if d is entered. Could you let me know where I have gone wrong? Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:38, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

) Thanks! I should have figured it was that simple! :) =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:16, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello GDibyendu, the administrators are currently observing the IP troll (Sock of User: Nangparbat) who's making unconstructive edits to Kashmir / Indo-Pak related articles. A rangeblock may be on its way. In the mean time, simply rollback all related edits made by this user (TW / HG would make the job a breeze) and update active IPs in User:Hersfold/Vandal watch#Nangparbat. Please take care to keep them in sorted order to make rangeblocks easier to determine and marking the new ones with (active). please save POK article from deletion[edit]

this article has been posted for deletion by pakistanis..i have made the following appeal there:

  • do not delete : PLEASE allow editing to take place in this article so that it gets balanced; disabling editing and then crying unbalanced is hypocrisy!!!..As we all know we didn't delete european union article just because there was an "england" article or "france" article or "germany" article (which are part of EU nevertheless) ... Similarly we did not destroy soviet union article just because it is divided into 15 parts..Further it is very very clear that POK is not the same as azad k as pok also includes trans karakoram tract, gilgit and baltistan (from 1947 till now)...pok term is used by most if not all non pakistan media.so ip and soman contention invalid.. i think it is not "fork" since contents are not identical, verifiable, has reliable sources and differs from the other articles like "trans-Karakoram tract" or "Northern Areas" (at the maximum, there is a passing reference in the summary(if this is considered fork) style with redirect links to sub regions). So, i am opposing this high handed move based on ignorance..rather i suggest that those who suggest it as non neutral contribute towards making this neutral, if it is not already neutral..pahari sahib's contention of inflammatory not substantiated both in talk page of pok or otherwise..so DO NOT DELETEKashmircloud (talk) 10:28, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

if you can improve this article or if you believe that the article can be improved by removing the edit ban(say, exampple: semiprotect) and if you also concur that pok not equal to ajk, please help in saving this article from deleters with nationalistic (pakistani)/ religious(islamist?) motives for POK article removal(example: User:paharisahib is pakistani)..please save the POKarticle... i also saw that you support status quo..you can suggest that at pok article's "link for deletion"..hope you respond to my appealKashmircloud (talk) 10:28, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Lifetime template[edit]

I dislike the lifetime template and don't use it ever (but leave it in place if I find it). I think it makes something that should be basic more confusing than it needs to be for beginning editors, becoming in effect a "barrier to entry". In particular, I intensely dislike that it includes and thereby hides the DEFAULTSORT template. The DEFAULTSORT template has "side effects", that is, it has an effect outside its own scope, in Category statements elsewhere in the article. As a programmer for 35 years, I've always found hidden side effects to be bad news; they bite you in the butt later or at best create unneeded confusion. Same issues for the BD template, of course.

I've probably cleaned up 20 or 30 articles now that had 2 or more of DEFAULTSORT, Lifetime, and BD. Studerby (talk) 08:09, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey GDibyendu,
Thanks for your message and thanks for the link to the August MoS changes. I have to admit I don't follow the frequent MoS changes as carefully as I should. However, in your example on the Johnny Lever page my DAB link edit (diff [4]) was in his list of films. I changed the generic and unwanted (per MoS) link to the DAB page Indian to the correct and specific link to the page for the film Indian (film) where Johnny played a small role. Linking to Indian cinema would have been little improvement at all. So, actually I changed an unhelpful link to a demonyn into a link to the correct film :) A useful edit, yeah? SVG map tips[edit]

  1. Removing the rivers and highways shouldn't be too much of a problem. Select, delete, done.
  2. If you plan to use text, please use only the fonts listed here: m:SVG fonts. Else mediawiki will make a mess of your work. Bitstream Vera or DejaVu are most popular.
  3. Note: Vertical or text placed on a curve will not be rendered correctly by mediawiki. Convert them to a path.
  4. Note: Arrowheads will not be rendered
  5. Remember that the files are XML, so open it in notepad and do a "search and replace" to replace all the colours (HTML colours) on the map :-D

Let me know if you have any further issues. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:27, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From what you describe about the borders, I think I understand what is going wrong. Make sure you adjust the stroke colour, not the fill. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:02, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
