Well, it's not like I'm biting you, I just wanted to point out that dates of birth and deaths are usually wikilinked... a good rule of a thumb when unsure what to do is to look for a featured article on similar topic (i.e. writer biography, like Tolkien's or something) and look how it's done there. :) --Koveras ^☭ 09:07, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

This is a response to your question about how "Boyer" is pronounced. I believe the second way is correct, only because Boyer was American and even if it is a French surname, I imagine it would have been Anglicized. Sorry I don't have any more definite information. Hi there—thanks for the edits you have been making to the chess articles here on Wikipedia. It is extremely useful that you are adding the extra detail necessary to lift the quality of these articles.

If you have not already been there, I would encourage you to pay a visit to WP:Wikiproject Chess where you will find lots of information on how our 'chess' coverage is progressing, including suggestions for new articles, biographies etc. Add your own name to the participant list there if you would like to join the Project. While there, you will also see that the Project 'Talk Page' is the place to raise any issues on chess-related topics, or simply to contribute with your own views on other peoples' issues. Of course, if you have any questions about editing that you would like to ask me, I would be happy to try to answer them—just leave something on my Talk Page.

One tip for now—when editing articles, it is usually a good idea to quote the appropriate references/sources for any details that you add; this is particularly the case with articles like Leonid Stein, where there are currently no references at all. It seems likely from your edits that you have access to a number of reliable sources, so adding, for example, the name of a book and the relevant page numbers in a 'References' section near the end of the article, would indicate to other users that your edits are made in good faith and are factual. Of course, many editors like to use inline citations, but I would never expect a relatively new user to pick this up straight away. Chess edits

Thanks for the responses. I see now where you got the Leonid Stein fact from - and not from a book or external link, as I had imagined. Apologies.

Of course I have been writing here for a few years now, so I think your achievements are equally praiseworthy, given the short time you have been doing it. I would indeed like to have a look at the Torino 2006 website, but can you confirm the web address? I'm not sure I can find it.

My chess library is also the size of a small house, but it is curious how we all borrow information from each other - I wrote a new article on Jan Smeets today and found the German wiki site a big help. These articles take time to write, so any savings on research time are always welcome!

I have been working with User:Voorlandt on the World Youth Chess Championship for some time now and we are unable to fill the few remaining spaces in the tables, much to our frustration. The under-16 girl champion of 1983 is the most annoying, as we have even found a photograph that shows some of the girls sitting next to Alexey Dreev at the opening/closing ceremony. Thanks for all your work so far. Let's hope that the Colombians keep records. I have also emailed GM Matthias Wahls, who I think played in Bucaramanga in 1983, so hopefully we might resolve this one at some point. I very much enjoyed my visit to the history section of the Torino 2006 website; there is the basis for a new Olympiad wikipedia article there, I'm sure! Hope you are enjoying visiting the Dresden Olympiad coverage at the moment - all boards live - that was a pleasant surprise, although the clock timings seem a little dodgy sometimes. Side project

Hello again. Thanks for making the adjustment to the Yudasin page. He was in fact also a co-winner in 97/98 with Komarov, but this was badly described in the text, and a glance at the sources did not confirm it. I have now hopefully explained things better.

Congratulations on your ongoing work btw, I havn't been back to it.wikipedia recently, but I would imagine it's filling up nicely, judging by the number of times I see you adding interwiki links. It's great that you still take the time to edit on en.wiki too.

I am trying, as a side project, to produce a universal list of international tournament results, on a Word File (allowing some searching/replacing etc.). It's a huge project, but for all but the most important tournaments, I've attempted to minimise the effort by using a very lightweight format, truncating the result after the first few places, like so;

1977 Apr. Sao Paulo BRA - Vaganian 10/13, Quinteros 9, Benko, Miles, Razuvaev 8, Kaplan, Rocha, Segal 7 …

1977 Apr. Birmingham ENG (Cat. 5) - Botterill 7.5/11, Damjanovic, Rukavina 7, Gasic, Soos 6, Basman, Luginbuhl 5.5, Kagan, Povah 5 …

1977 Apr.-May. Balashikha URS (Cat. 7) - Knaak 9/13, Ivanovic 8.5, Makarichev 8, Vatnikov, Lanc 7.5, Peev, Kholmov 7, Kirov 6.5 …

This extract shows that 1977 is quite well populated, as there are probably 12 or so entries for April alone. Many years are still virtally empty however, containing perhaps 4-6 entries for the super-GM tourneys only.

Would you have any time/inclination to contribute to this project? I'd like to build it as big as possible over the next year or so. It will eventually be an incredibly useful tool for editing biographies, constructing articles on tournament histories etc. I also think it would make a brilliant collaborative website ... some good possibilities ... but that's some way off yet.

There are about 40 pages of entries so far (that's about 800 tournaments) and I should be able to add a lot more from my own library of books, mags etc.

Does the project appeal to you? Could you spare the time to choose some of the sparsely populated years and add what you can? Many thanks for your time and it's no problem if you can't do it, really. List of grandmasters of chess compositions?

Hi there, thanks for the kind words, but I do very little editing currently, so I don't really know why I earned a star award - busy editors like yourself would be much more deserving! Hopefully, I will return to editing one day soon. Meanwhile, your question is quite a complex one and I'm not sure I have all the answers. A quick google search appears to show a preference for grandmaster 'of' chess compositions, rather than 'for'. So maybe List of grandmasters of chess compositions is more accurate, but it does sound grammatically more clumsy using 'of' twice. That's one dilemma. Another is that some encyclopedias give International Grandmaster of ... however, I think FIDE dropped the 'International' bit a while back for its other titles and so probably for this one also. Of course FIDE themselves are no help - a quick look at their site revealed nothing. Capital G or small g in grandmaster? I'd probably go small g, just for consistency with List of chess grandmasters. Also some authors think the title ends ... composition (e.g. Gaige) whereas others (e.g. Sunnucks) prefer ... compositions with an 's'. Okay, enough for now. Perhaps more research is needed for the definitive answer, but I don't have time ... any of these options may in any case be fine. I will not complain about your choice and I doubt anyone else will either. If I have only confused you (probably!) then feel free to ask everyone's preference at the Project Talk Page. Unified account

Ciao Gabodon, I noticed that on the Italian (and few others) wikipedia you use the account Gab.pr, while here on the enwiki you use this account Gabodon. None of these accounts are associated with a unified SUL account, so my suggestion is, why not go for a unified account? You could ask here at the enwiki for an administrator to rename your username to Gab.pr, or vice-versa on the other wikis. Your contributions are not lost with an account renaming, they are transferred to the new username. Then you request that a SUL account be created for the username that you chose to keep. The advantages of a unified SUL account are:

• Everytime you visit/contribute to a wiki in a new language (while logged in at your home wiki), you won't need to register again there, it will be automatic (like here).
• You avoid the risk of someone creating an account as "Gabodon" in the itwiki, which could potentially cause you some troubles.

After your account is renamed, the procedure will be very simple: If you use different passwords here and at the other wikis, it's a good idea to change them all to a single password, it will simplify the process of unification. Hi Gabodon, thank you for your information. I was doing New page patrol and saw the article came up on my screen and in its first iteration there was one reference. If you were still updating the article, I apologize for being too quick to assume it was not going to be updated. You can let other people know you are still updating the article by putting a {{inuse}} or {{goceinuse}} or even {{underconstruction}}, so new page patrollers will give it time to be wikified.

Andrei Sokolov

Hello again. Yes, the reference at the bottom of the Sokolov page is correct - CHESS magazine, Christmas 1985, page 255. One day I will add all of these properly, as inline citations (sadly long overdue). The magazine article gives all of the information in the Suetin paragraph, though I have paraphrased most of it.

It is a useful magazine article, as Suetin also gives his thoughts on Tal, Vaganian and Yusupov - you will see I used them when writing en.wiki articles on the latter two. The magazine edition is from 'Volume 50' and the article extends from pages 255-258, if you prefer to have all of these details in your reference.

Things like changing "his own achievements" to "his remarkable achievements" could definitely be subject of a dispute. Also, changing "Apart from his publications, Arguelles has produced a considerable number of instructional and informational videos" to "Arguelles has produced a considerable number of didactic and scholarly texts" could also reasonably be called into question.
