In truth, I wrote Cowper's entry in the third volume of the Dictionary of Virginia Biography. Having spent so much time excavating the details of his life (particularly pinning down a birth date for him, which was buried in his mother's divorce petition), I rather acquired a fondness for him. The Randolph-Cary clan certainly produced some very influential writers and some amazing women. Virginia's sister Mary Randolph wrote The Virginia House-Wife (1824); their sister Judith Randolph carried out the manumission and resettlement of more than seventy slaves; and their sister Ann Cary "Nancy" Randolph was accused of adultery with her brother-in-law (Judith's husband) and infanticide in 1792 in what is usually called the Bizarre scandal. I'm not related, alas. I've done a great deal of writing on the Custises. Mary Lee Fitzhugh Custis recorded notes on her parents', siblings', and children's life dates in a copy of Annual Visitor: or, Almanac for the Year of our Lord, 1802, which is in the Annfield Collection, Clarke County Historical Association, Berryville, Va.
