Highway Exit Lists[edit]

Hey there, I've noticed that you've added a lot of helpful exit lists to various articles about California highways. What is your source for these lists? You've said on your talk page that you have relatives who work at Caltrans. Does Caltrans have a published book, or pamphlets, etc. with an index of exits for every route in the state? I noticed that the ones on the Caltrans website, for example this, are not at the same level of quality as the ones you post. For one, they don't include the cities and milepost numbers. I would be very eager to order a complete exit index from Caltrans if they really had them. Wikipedian06 05:25, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response. Keep up the good work. I really do appreciate it! Wikipedian06 20:51, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

California State Routes[edit]

I've noticed that you seem to be creating California highway stubs, but you seem to be using the wrong title format -- then redirecting from the right ones, making page moves possible on by admin action. As Wikipedia:WikiProject California State Highways puts it:

Article Naming Convention[edit]

The contents of each article in this project should reside in California State Route XXX, with XXX being the route number; also, California State Highway XXX should redirect to the article as well.

I'll use the correct format from now on (curse my laziness in using red links) --Geopgeop 07:03, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Break[edit]

Unfortunately, I will be away from Wikipedia for a few months. My access to the site has been limited and I can only get on during a few hours a week. However, during summer my schedule changes, and thus I am unable to get back on Wikipedia.

You may contact me however, at Wikisource or by email (keep me updated on the arbcom case, I will be able to respond)...

I'm not really sure when I'll be returning. Possibly in August or September... although I signed up to take AP Chemistry, AP Language, AP U.S. History, Pre-Calculus, Spanish 4, Physics, and Eschatology and Hermaneutics. Don't know how the homework load will be. But rest assured... I'll be back.

Nevada[edit]

I can't find the specs online. Do you have the specs - or alternately some high-quality photos of recent signs - that I could make them from? --SPUI (T - C) 17:39, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I noticed the recent switch to SVG signs for Nevada. I don't think the SVG signs are accurate in the current form, please consider adjusting them. First is the size and font of the numbers. Second is the lack of contours in the lower-right section of the state outline. See for example: (Geopgeop: The following was a comparison between the photo and old revisions of the SVGs. For archival purposes they are still here. See the actual description pages of the SVGs for links to the old revisions. --Geopgeop 06:08, 19 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Let me know in a few days if I haven't gotten around to it. --SPUI (T - C) 08:02, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, while the SVGs do look quite off from the actual signs, the sign specifications that NevadaDOT e-mailed me had the shape of Nevada with less contours. I could e-mail you the specifications if you'd like. Plus, the height is right, that the sign is 36 units wide and tall, and the route number is 8 units tall, and the NEVADA text is 5 units tall. Come to think of it, I think I needed a 0 pixel white border around the image to show up in dark background. Details, details. Oh yeah, I uploaded the blank as well (Commons:Image:Nevada blank.svg), try tinkering with that. If there is an SVG outline of the state of Nevada, I would have used that for the Nevada shape. I still have a lot to learn with SVGs. --Geopgeop 07:38, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, SPUI is looking over the images I uploaded as well as the PDF of the sign specifications, but for one last time I went and uploaded a new version of Nevada 207.svg (and also Nevada blank.svg as well). With the comparison that you made on my talk page, check it out. I'll leave the rest up to SPUI. --Geopgeop 09:46, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This looks much better, very close to the actual signpost. Thanks for your work here. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 13:07, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I must be blind (technically I'm legally blind without my glasses) but I just found out now that you're the one who created the List of Nevada state highways list and uploaded Image:Nevada_State_Highway_Signposts_Carson_Range.jpg. (Smacks head...)

Counting me, you, SPUI, and possibly Vegaswikian and maybe Rt66lt, a Nevada State Highways WikiProject (cool, WP:NEVASH, reminds me of Vash the Stampede from Trigun - I have a bobblehead of him in my room, or the Nirvash from Eureka Seven; Neva works, there's a Cal Neva in Lake Tahoe, why not, there's WP:CASH, okay enough -) could be created at this point. --Geopgeop 10:13, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but I'm not sure I would be of any further use for this project. I have only been to Nevada twice, and so have very little local knowledge. It was actually after a trip that I realized that there were no articles on Nevada highways and so started the list. All of my contributions would be based on online maps and NVDOT data, which I'm not sure would be very helpful beyond what is already there. But, that said, I'm willing to pitch in whenever needed. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 13:07, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

County maps and related - SVG[edit]

I would certainly consider making my U.S. city/place location maps in SVG format, but I've simply never dealt with vector images before. The current PNG format maps are simply based on preexisting state county-outline maps already used on Wikipedia. I'm not overly techy and I don't know if I'd be as comfortable dealing with SVG files. I have no issue with anybody deciding to make vector versions of maps I've already uploaded. Hope this answer clarifies things. Bumm13 04:50, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was looking at the Evil con Carne page and noticed the note at top. It claims that "Evil con Carne" is Spanish for "Evil with meat". In reality "evil" is an English word. How would it be noted that it is a grouping of English and Spanish words?

It's like someone asking a tanned person how he gets his tan and a vampire shows up out of nowhere saying "I hate you" to the one who asked, where it would have slightly made more sense to hate the person with the tan out of jealousy or something but instead hates the person who just asked a simple question. Orphaned non-free image (Image:ESRB K-A.png)[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:ESRB K-A.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. King of ♠ 03:38, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the primer on how to create shields. I created Shields for Nevada State Route 722 and 723. They don't look as good as yours (I didn't get the font pitch just right) but hey, its my first one, I'll get better. =-) Davemeistermoab 03:42, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I was using the Roadgeek D font. At least I think I was. I'll play with it some more later and figure it out. I have two theories: a. I didn't have the font size right or b. I may not have put the fonts in the right place. Inkscape for Mac OS X currently runs on an X-windows emulation layer (the native port isn't available yet). I wonder if the fonts have to be in a special place for x-windows to find them and X11 did a font substitution behind my back. Again, I'll get it. But if you know anybody else who uses Inkscape on a non-windows operating system who could confirm or deny theory b I'd appreciate it. Davemeistermoab 16:28, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help. I'll try that when I get back. I think it's cool that Apple now includes layers to run both Unix and Windows apps (despite the stereotype it means that macs can run almost any current application) but X11 is a quirky beast. I was very happy when openoffice announced they were doing a native mac version that didn't run on X11 for that very reason. I gave up on gnucash because of X11's quirks =-), hopefully someone is working on a native inkscape too =-).

Davemeistermoab 23:09, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why do we need the county abbreviation before every postmile? The county's already in the list in the first column. --NE2 16:07, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Exit lists[edit]

The way I see it, there's a difference between a little airport symbol ([1][2]) and text saying there's an airport. About the additional street names, have those been added to the main signs ([3]) or are they only on auxiliary signs ([4])? If you say signs have changed, I'll believe you; if you're worried that it will be reverted just add an HTML comment that signs have changed. --NE2 14:18, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you put a lot of "notable" destinations in the Notes column. Well, I removed a majority of them, mainly because I believe that we should only put down nearby points of interest, not cities or roads. This is because the exit list is becoming cluttered with extraneous details. If you wish to put them back in, I pretty much recommend that you should discuss with others on WT:ELG and see if you all reach some kind of consensus. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Hercules seal.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Hercules seal.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:45, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I never said thank you for hunting down how to get Inkscape from doing font substitutions under Mac OS X. I'm getting ready to do a bunch more NV Route shields. So wish me luck. If you're curious, i'm going to try to to the shields used on Nevada State Route 447 and U.S. Route 395 in Nevada, in the latter's case I had to re-do the exit list without images, cause it looked so ugly with so many missing images =-) Anyways, thanks again.

I really never liked the navbox way; I think it makes everything look more cluttered and unorganized. And there is no rule which says all templates have to be navbox. I'm not trying to start an edit war, and its not that big a problem to me, so if there is a consensus that the template should be navbox I will not argue, but I just personally like different ways. I did find that information from the Bio-Rad website itself, but it seems you found that out as I see from the article's revision log. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. --Geopgeop (T) 13:37, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Everything has been straightened out in my mind. Biorad was founded in 1952 by the Schwartzes, and then incorporated in 1957. I inserted both dates (and their distinction) but IP 192...36 (from Biorad Laboratories) then deleted the 1957 reference. The loss of the 1957 is not a big deal at the moment. But 192 needs to begin supplying references for his additions (and deletions) ASAP, or he is going to get blocked because he is a definite Conflict of Interest. Orphaned non-free media (File:Caltrans logo.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Caltrans logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:21, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ditto as SVG replacement found... --Geopgeop (T) 09:17, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Four Peters[edit]

If you haven't watched it again by now, the Family Guy episode was "Model Misbehavior" in which the Four Peters sing the first movement of Mozart's "Eine kliene Nachtmusik." Thank tv.com for the that information [6], and I thank youtube for having the clip. I don't like that show, but I did like that arrangement of the Mozart. clean copy paste templates[edit]

i recently made some edits to a page that i thought was just a royal mess and very difficult to decipher only to have them summarily reverted by User:TwinsMetsFan. quite a while back (oct 2007), you had a discussion re 'clean copy paste' templates and i was wondering if you might be interested in joining in with me to revisit that topic. cheers! --emerson7 09:52, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not create hoaxes on Wikipedia, as you did at California State Route 399. Doing so is considered to be vandalism and is prohibited. If you are interested in how accurate Wikipedia is, a more constructive test method would be to try to find inaccurate statements that are already in Wikipedia—and then to correct them if possible. If you would like to make test edits, please use the sandbox. Under section G3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, the page has been nominated for deletion. Repeated vandalism may result in the loss of editing privileges.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
