Bluff Knoll[edit]

Hello Gnangarra,

Thanks for your beautiful images. I hope you will not mind that I have used the one of Bluff Knoll (Stirling Range W.A.) on the page about Darwinia collina. I have one of my own but not as good as yours.

Cheers!

Diuris images[edit]

Hello Gnangarra,

Greetings from the other side of the continent.

I am writing a few W.A. orchid pages and noticed some changes on the Diuris page. In particular, an image of yours that you added in 2006 as Diuris carinata (with a note about about some uncertainty) was renamed Diuris magnifica by 1 on 7 November 2009 with no reason given. Given that you created the image in Kings Park, presumably of a labelled plant, I think the label should be Diuris carinata. You?

I am also curious about the image of Diuris longifolia on the same page. You appear to have added it to Wikimedia Commons as Diuris brumalis then labelled it on the Wikipedia page as Diuris longifolia. The same image has been used on the Diuris brumalis page. I do not profess to be an orchid expert so please tell me if I have been wrong in changing the label (on the Diuris page) to Diuris brumalis.

I have an image that I think is of Diuris longifolia which I will use on a page about that species. Gderrin (talk) 00:22, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Durius brumalis it is.. the Durius are one I have trouble with getting accurate id's on because the species have very subtle variations it can be more a time and place rather than appearance that enables an accurate description I use Florabase to id.. If you think one is something else I'm not going to argue with you when it comes the Durius so yeah if you have an image your more certain about with id then use it. Hello!

I have added </noinclude> to this template. Do you want to put this template on articles you've contributed to? That is probably not allowed, and a bad idea. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 08:15, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not Robyn Taylor, this template is the credit for the use of her work and explaining how it came about.. Gnangarra
Well, I am sorry to inform you that using that template on articles is a very bad idea, and probably not allowed. I can easily edit over a thousand articles per day, imagine if I would leave such a template on every page I edited! And imagine what would happen if everyone did! The Quixotic Potato (talk) 08:20, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well show us the policy that says so, I'm complying with copyright requirements as the text is word for word pasted from someone else work with permission, we have previously used similar templates for works source directly from other sources Gnangarra 08:26, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
TBH I am not sure if such a policy exists, although I wouldn't be surprised if it does. We can use WP:CONSENSUS. Where have you used those other templates? Do you agree that it would be problematic if I (or other people) would make a similar template that links to a local business, and place it on many pages? To be honest I think the best option is to move the template to the talkpages of the articles. Is that a good compromise for you? The Quixotic Potato (talk) 08:30, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Someone has tagged Raffaele Martelli for deletion. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 08:31, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks I know cant edit three things at once Gnangarra 08:33, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think Annie Stack also has a problem, WP:NOTABILITY. Where have you used those other similar templates? The Quixotic Potato (talk) 08:37, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Talk Page lurkers comment - To predicate a message probably not allowed, or even bad idea suggests a lack of knowledge of the context of where outreach/glamprojects work, in a number of projects around WP en, where there are various forms of acknowledgement of work on specific projects.
Please, also to invoke slippery slope conjecture, is misleading and misrepresenting the issue. The identification is not a 'self identifying' one, but a very specific contribution, to a very specific project - this has nothing to do in any way with general editing by wikipedian editors. There is a substantive difference that specificallly identify the project, the writer and the purpose.
Find the policy you think is tied, and link to it. Meanwhile, however well intentioned the comments might be, try understanding that where attribution exists in article history at all times (have a look at contribution history on any article - there off-wiki programmes that specifically identify editors...) - this is something different JarrahTree 08:38, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Would you please be so kind to show me some of those "various forms of acknowledgement of work on specific projects". You seem to have indented every paragraph of your comment one more step. Please read WP:INDENT. As I tried to explain before, I am not even sure if we have a policy that explicitely forbids this kinda stuff, although I wouldn't be surprised if there is one. But we don't really need one, we can use WP:CONSENSUS and WP:COMMONSENSE. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 09:00, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
would love spend time finding you the examples there are thousands of them created in earlier times but I'm trying to stop idiots deleting notable articles because they havent been wikified Gnangarra 08:42, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, personally I am not a complete idiot (but I am a potato, we potatoes don't have much brainpower), and I would say that both Raffaele Martelli and Annie Stack are probably not notable enough to get a Wikipedia article (after reading the articles). And if they are then the reason(s) why should be clear when reading the article (this ensures people won't tag them for deletion). Please read WP:NOTABILITY, especially this section. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 08:48, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure where the judgement of in process articles from from - the articles are in process of being wikified - you are jumping in too quick at the wrong spot. A major problem with jumping on articles in process is you are welcome to your insights into what constitutes what, but you are wrong. They are indeed notable people, and also when the articles have been subjected to the usual processes of wikification, the notability issues become totally irrelevent. JarrahTree 08:55, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

sources are in the articles, but here you go

  • Erickson, Rica, Old Toodyay and Newcastle, Toodyay Shire Council, 1974.
  • Garden, D., Northam, An Avon Valley History, Northam Shire Council, Hesperian Press, 1992.
  • Kinder, John J. and Brown, J., Canon Raffaele Martelli in Western Australia. Life and Letters, Abbey Press. 2014.

after 10years opf creating and deleting content I kind of know what is a notable subject Gnangarra 09:00, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How much time do you need? Would (for example) a week be enough? Then I will (try to) return here after 7 (or more) days. Or do you prefer two weeks? I think the best option is to move the template to the talkpages of the articles. Is that a good compromise for you? Where have you used or seen those other similar templates? Would you be so kind to show me some examples (you can post them here). The Quixotic Potato (talk) 09:10, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
David Ritchie (diplomat) Gnangarra 09:14, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, interesting stuff. Would you please be so kind to answer the rest of my questions (above, in my comment dated 09:10, 14 September 2015)? Do you have more examples? One of the differences is that that text in David Ritchie (diplomat) is imported from an external source that uses a (probably compatible) license and requires attribution. In the case of Raffaele Martelli and Annie Stack there is no evidence of that. The best solution would be for Robyn Taylor to create an Wikipedia account so there is no attribution required (other than the page history). Has Robyn Taylor licensed these texts? Under which license? Another difference is that you are using a huge template you made yourself with a link to a commercial company and a picture (the picture is too big, but even at this size I had to click on it to see what it was) instead of plain text (and the minimum text required). Currently the CC-notice template also contains a logo, albeit a tiny one that is actually relevant, I am not sure why, and I would recommend removing it. But, if you have evidence that Robyn Taylor uses one of the licenses that are compatible with Wikipedia then you can use CC-notice. But using the template you made in its current form is a very bad idea. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 09:58, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
as for the rest please show which policy you are referring to with the template Gnangarra 10:19, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We don't really need one, we can use WP:CONSENSUS and WP:COMMONSENSE. Please answer the rest of the questions. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 10:31, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it is a good idea to add this and that to Raffaele Martelli. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 10:31, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, reducing the size of the template already makes a very big difference. I am not sure what kind of computer-setup you guys have but on my screen that template was huge! The Quixotic Potato (talk) 10:40, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
WP:IAR If the rules get in the way of making or maintaining an encyclopaedia then ignore them, adding the template enables compliance with re-use conditions so it would be that WP:COMMONSENSE is actually supportive of what I and other editors have done consistently since WP started. Thanks for the two additional sources on Raffaela first I need to add inline for the text that was provided, then I'll work expanding it with other materials. I'm happy to discuss this further but please besides an WP:IDONTLIKE reason I'd appreciate it if you could show me some policy reasons specifically related to the issue. Gnangarra 12:00, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My PC monitors are quite big, so the template ended up being huge (before you reduced the size). On a small screen (I used my MP3 player) the template was gigantic. I think you will agree with me that this was a bit too big. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 18:41, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As I had just created the template and was still working on the template and its placement in articles that had you not wasted my time with demands it would have been tested on multiple devices and adjusted sooner, it also would have been better in the first instance to have just said it looks to big on a small screen can you reduce it. Gnangarra 23:41, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Can you show me a list of the demands that I am accused of wasting your time with? I don't think you can. The fact that it was so big (on both small AND big screens) is just one of the problems. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 00:00, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
heres one Gnangarra 00:10, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. Demand = a forceful statement in which you say that something must be done or given to you. Demands is the plural. The Quixotic Potato (talk) 00:19, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The way I see it, Lotterywest is effectively paying to have its name mentioned on Wikipedia articles. This kind of sponsored content amounts to back-door advertisement: "This article brought to you by Lotterywest." I really, really doubt that the community would agree to that if it were aware of the issue. I don't think it's comparable to attributing PD sources to avoid plagiarism. There are all kinds of other problems here that I could think of; for example, those who add this content to Wikipedia are effectively proxying for paid editors while avoiding the letter of the Terms of Use. I'll raise the issue at WP:AN to get more community input. This isn't just something a single project should decide, and as soon as we begin to credit a lottery company, I don't think calling it a "glamproject" is appropriate. Huon (talk) 00:36, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Link: Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Sponsored_content
Exactly. This is not comparable to an attribution template. I don't need a policy to show that this is not allowed, it is easy to get a consensus that we don't want templates that say stuff like "This article brought to you by Lotterywest".
  • I don't know if you (or anyone else) has promised Lotterywest that they would get a link on every article that they "sponsor", but it seems like that is the case. If not, then you wouldn't have a big problem with removing those links.
  • The attribution part is OK. We can have a sentence that says: "Text for this article includes material written by Robyn Taylor." (If Robyn isn't notable then her name shouldn't be linked).
  • Using div class="toccolours" is a bad idea. Most of the attribution template are simply a line of text. We don't need any background colors and borders etc.
  • The picture is so small that I cannot see what it is without clicking on it to get a full-sized version. The picture should be removed, it is pointless.
  • The Dr PhD MPHA looks a bit silly, it is probably better to remove that.
  • "for the Shire of Toodyay" and "to expand the Toodyaypedia WikiTown project" is irrelevant text should be removed.
  • The template is transcluded on just two pages: Raffaele Martelli and Annie Stack. In both articles an editsummary was used that already attributes the text to Robyn, which means that the template is not necessary.
To make a long story short; you can delete the template, or you can change it to: "Text for this article includes material written by Robyn Taylor.<noinclude></noinclude>" The Quixotic Potato (talk) 05:05, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I should probably mention that I'm the one who answered the OTRS email, which did not give a specific license but seemed to put restrictions on the re-use of the content that would make it fall under the purview of the WP:NFCC. I'd advise Gnangarra or others who are involved with the project to discuss the licensing requirements with Ms Taylor and to make sure firstly, who owns the copyright (if it's a work-for-hire, copyright might be owned by the Shire), and secondly, what license, exactly, it is released under and whether that license is compatible with Wikipedia's requirements. That's entirely unrelated to the template issues, but technically right now we violate the policy on non-free content, and if this isn't resolved soon we should put up the articles for speedy deletion on copyright grounds. Huon (talk) 09:35, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When I work on OTRS emails there was a level of confidentiality that prohibited discussing the content of the emails in public and that OTRS agents could only give confirmation that an appropriate permission had been provided, if you thing more information is required you email the people involved and discuss it. Gnangarra 09:47, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gnangarra: I'm not going to argue over your deletion because arguably G7 could apply even though you were not the sole contributor anymore. However I would just remind you that it is generally inadvisable to use the admin tools in areas where you are involved. Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:19, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

none had added any content to the template besides me but yeah about the tools given the permission isnt going to be acceptable and its going to involved significant travel and time on my behalf to clear it up I thought its better to clean up my own mess rather than chase some to clean up after me. Hi Gnangarra, hope it's not too smoky where you are!
Just wanted to point out that the Southbound page has been updated about the cancellation, with somewhat different information, in both the History and #2016 sections.diff. I also added some text to both about the Bushfire benefit concert tomorrow at HBF Stadium. Possible needs a copy-edit to reduce tautology. Just FYI. 220 of Borg

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Help decide the future of Wikimania[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk), from Community Resources 22:01, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Perth Freight Link[edit]

Regarding the COI edit, I had already reverted by editing an old revision, and adding back some of the additional info in (what I thought was) an appropriate way. Did you intend to revert the edits I made after the COI edit? - Evad37 [talk] 09:48, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • All the COI edit content should be removed, if there is any content that you think could be added it should be discussed before hand to ensure we dont inadvertently introduce a bias and any sources from a primary source with the coi should be corroborated by an independent source which would then be used in preference to the COI source. Gnangarra 09:58, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oh, okay. This is the first time I've dealt with this kind of COI editing. I've proposed edits on the article's talk page. - Evad37 [talk] 11:29, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reviewing. Just so you know, it's customary to add to DYK reviews so users will know that it's approved and able to be moved to a DYK prep area. Sorry for the inconvenience, but without the "tick" mark, the submission will likely not be promoted, and just sit there on the DYK nominations page. Reclassification of Mullalyup, Western Australia[edit]

Re the second paragraph in this edit...
Mullalyup, Western Australia looks like more than a stub to me, so reclassifying it as "start class" seems reasonable. Your use of the plural in "reclassing Noongar stubs" suggests there may be other articles - perhaps one of those others might better illustrate your point. (I remain undecided on the matter of the CfD, but suggest that particular example does not help your case.) Mitch Ames (talk) 13:22, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Something you may have missed[edit]

I see from your edit history that you have been away for a few days so I thought I'd point out something you may have missed. WP:IAP has been nominated for retargeting again. There was no interest in merging Wikipedia:Ignore all precedent, which you had previously nominated so the merge tag was removed. I've subsequently nominated it for deletion. --AussieLegend () 04:53, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Hello, Gnangarra. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi Gnangarra.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Hello, Gnangarra. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was hoping for some stronger support and participation in this. I know it's probably a time of year in Australia when people will be editing less, but I thought it would be a good way to root out articles needing work and something to work on long term with some contests to fuel it or something. Old block submitted for your review[edit]

While going through some old categories, I came across User talk:222.64.218.33. It looks like you left a warning about a temporary block, but then blocked the IP indefinitely as a "Spam / advertising-only account". I don't see a history of a abuse from this IP outside that one day, and it's been blocked since April 2010. I assume that was a misclick? Avicennasis @ 04:02, 19 Kislev 5777 / 04:02, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • It wasnt a misclick as such it was part of a series of chasing spamming accounts from what was WikiTravel of wikipedia articles in 2010. In 2012 when it was forked into Wikivoyage and Wikivoyage became part of the Wikimedia Community the spamming stopped and became interwiki links. The IP once blocked couldnt continue with the spamming that is the whole the purpose of a block, but yeah there wouldnt be any reaily apparent reasonings for maintaining that block any further, I'll remove it. Gnangarra 04:20, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
