Bueng Kan

I was partly correct in deleting the Bueng Kan link as it went to the Bueng Kan township and not the province link as it should have. At the time I didn't know that there were two Bueng Kan's. That plus the poor grammar is why I deleted the change. I have since changed the link to the correct site and corrected the comma's and spacing.

Page name change from: 'viol' to 'viola da gamba'

Hi Graham87!

I hope you had a good holiday - sorry for troubling you, I am not such an experienced editor and have come unstuck trying to change the name (and therefore also ultimately the URL) of a wikipedia entry, but the page name which I wanted to change the name to is apparently a deleted page.

The page I wish to change the name of is entitled 'Viol' - which, as I am sure you are aware, is a baroque instrument known equally as widely as the 'Viola da gamba'. The reason for my interest in changing the page to the longer form is twofold;

i. the word 'viol' in French means 'rape' - which will perhaps unintentionally offend some people. ii. Many societies and organisations sharing an interest in the viola da gamba appear to use that name in their titles.

I look forward to hearing from you - or indeed please feel free to change the page yourself if that is simpler!

Freedom Scientific

A user came on the help channel on I.R.C. He wanted to create an article about his company. He had no independent sources. We told him that we would not approve his article without sources. He said, why does Freedom Scientific get to have an article without sources, it's not fair, et cetera. I looked at the article on Freedom Scientific, and told him he was right. But not in the way he had hoped.

As for the speediness - well, I rarely bother to invoke a specific CSD; I delete articles if I feel that they need to be deleted, and if I feel that I can justify my actions to other admins. DS (talk) 03:57, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Indus Valley Civilization

Can you remove this libelling for Historians believing in Indus-Saraswati Theory as 'Hindutva'(A political Hindu nationalist ideology). The last sentence on this section.

Screen readers for PDFs

Hi Graham87, I recall you mentioning that you used a screen reader. Wondering if you might be able to give me some advice. I am seeking to listen to textbooks in protected document format. There is an in-built "read aloud" function but it takes forever to load each page. Seems like several minutes sometimes. Perhaps this is because of the size of the PDFs I am asking it to read...

Thanks for that info. Was looking for something open source and free ... ok it seems screen reader is the wrong term for such a program that would only be needed to read the PDF and nothing else, while preserving normal keyboard functions. Guess I will stick to the in-built read aloud function, but damn it is slow sometimes.
Also, I've been using Audible.com and LibriVox for a few years for leisure reading. Range of available audiobooks is getting better. Shame they don't do many textbooks, perhaps soon these will become a feature. Regards, Lesion (talk) 15:41, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Looking for advice

I see you are active in writing about Yehudi Menuhin. I realize your interest is due to the music connection, but I'm looking for some advice, and thought you might be able to help. OTRS received a photo of Lionel Rolfe, the nephew of Menuhin, and an accomplished journalist and writer. He submitted the photo in connection with a draft of an article about himself User:Lionelrolfe. I have explained that this is a discouraged practice, but was hoping to provide a more positive answer. I checked out Wikipedia:WikiProject Media but it doesn't seem to be active. Use of either+or in the negative vs. neither+nor in the positive.

Not sure if this is a subtle change in the English language but many younger writers (okay, I'm making a value judgement here!) seem reluctant to use neither+nor - eg. "the dog neither sat on the mat nor on the seat (but elsewhere)" vs. "the dog didn't sit on the mat or on the seat (etc.)".

Yes, Wikipedia is international, but neither+nor is neither an archaeic construct nor something to avoid - even for users for whom English isn't their first language! But I'm interested in alternate perspectives (FYI I'm 61 this year, and I'm an irregular Wikipedia author, and I can't spell without the help of a spell checker!). @Redrose64: Nope, it's not. I'd actually remove the TOC as a matter of course, because it only points to appendix sections. It wouldn't be there if it weren't for the template, because the article has only three headings. Placing a heading above the table and moving the TOC accordingly would also work. Micropenis edits

I clicked this wiki by chance and just wanted to make a little correction.

Even the article used as reference said this " the average size of the human penis is around 12.5 cm or 5 inches, a micropenis spans less than 7 cm or just over two inches. " ----> http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/12/041206205001.htm

So why than put 7cm as 3 inches? when 7cm is 2.76 inches...... not 3 inches.

Archaeology challenge

Having a poke around some very old pages just now - what a leisure activity - I happened across Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense/WikiSex (originally located at User:I am sexy/WikiSex). Unsurprisingly for a page of this vintage, I see your fingerprints on its recent history. But I see that the page itself, Wikipedia:Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense/WikiSex, doesn't appear to exist in our database at all beyond the redirect you created at that title. There are no logs for its deletion, either. However, the Internet Archive has a copy of the page at BJAODN. Helpfully, it includes two links to earlier revisions of the page, which are described as:

  • Version prior to "I am sexy"'s departure - revision ID 3105300
  • Version prior to move here - revision ID 3185641

So my challenge to you as an expert wikiarchaeologist is, can you find out what happened to it, or even resurrect it? It is admittedly a very stupid page, but hey, fixing history holes is what we do.... Cheers, — Scott • talk 10:52, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

@Scott: It is indeed fun to traipse through old page histories! The current deletion log only goes back to 23 December 2004; the same is true of all of the other logs that go back that far, actually. For deletions before that, we need to consult the page Wikipedia:deletion log, but most of the logs linked from there have been deleted per libel concerns. However the Wayback Machine still holds copies of the original logs, and the one we're looking for is the second log from April 2004, which contains the WikiSex entries. Unfortunately this was before the great database crash, so the revisions cannot be restored. I have text files of all the deletion logs which are easily searchable; if you'd like a copy, email me (same goes for any of my talk page stalkers who want one). Graham87 12:24, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Of course - I had forgotten that our automatic logs hadn't started at that point, and also about the database crash. (Although I was around back then, I wasn't paying that much attention and so never heard of it at the time.) I was also unaware of the existence of the manual logs, let alone that they'd been deleted. And so much for that message on them - "I have temporarily deleted all deletion log archives temporarily. [sic] For now, if there is any need to view these entries, administrators can view them via the deleted edits feature. I will restore the entire logs soon." That was nearly 8 years ago! And more like oversighted; they certainly aren't available as deleted revisions. Well, thank you once again Wayback Machine for saving us from the goofs of others. I'll definitely drop you an email about plaintext versions, Graham, thanks.
Incidentally, I did find a leftover - one of the two VfDs for the page was originally located at {{VfD-BJOADN-wikisex}}, but got copy-and-paste moved into (what is now) the AfD. The redirect left there was subsequently deleted. I've restored it to this subpage. Have you ever tried tracking down deleted old VfDs in template space? @Scott: Yes, you can view the deleted revisions of the old deletion logs (I haven't checked all of them, but that example still works ... and they were all intact when I made the text-based copies for my own use). Nice save of the second VFD! I haven't thoroughly gone through all the old VFD's in the template namespace (though I have dabbled in that area). You've just inspired me to do this prefix search, which can be extended like so, which helped me find old VFD history related to Talk:Arab world, Talk:Battle of Modon, and Talk:Blogosphere. I've just history-merged them with the VFD pages because I thought it was the easiest approach I don't think overlapping edits matter in cases like these. That's yet another bit of wiki-archaeology to put on my to-do list (but any help would be appreciated, of course) ... I still haven't finished some of the work I'd planned related to queries on the 2003 database dumps! Graham87 14:44, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Ah yes, you're right, in fact, I was examining the wrong deleted revision of the log. That's good. About the note, well, I was totally copying your technique - earlier today I saw a similar note that you'd left. A good idea.
I didn't realize that it was possible to do a prefix search on deleted revisions, that's very useful. I'll have a poke around, although probably not in much of a systematic fashion. Found another one. Merging it would have resulted in a page history that was too confusing, in my opinion, so I moved it to a subpage and replaced the copied-and-pasted content with a transclusion. Ha ha!! Here's a good one: {{VfD-Page name}}. It's a placeholder template that got accidentally edited over and over again by different users. Moving it to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Page name doesn't seem right, because it's not actually a VfD/AfD. There's also already a page at that title, a similar placeholder with its own history. Unbulleted lists

Hello Graham. Since I don't use a screen reader myself, I would appreciate your opinion on the value of unbulleted lists in infobox fields. After reading WP:UBLIST, my understanding is that using this technique to emit semantically correct HTML is useful to readers who rely on a screen reader. My thought was that using <br /> line breaks indiscriminately to signify the end of a list item, as well as for formatting within a list item, would be confusing – am I right? I have had an editor revert my use of an unbulleted list in an infobox, but before I insist on replacing it, I'm trying to get a feel for how big of a difference it makes. Title of Sarah Moore (doctor) Wikipedia article

I think the title of Sarah Moore (doctor) should be changed to "Sarah Moore (The Family)" as she is known for her association with The Family, not for her brief period as a doctor. Hungarian Turanism article

User Maghasito try to spread pseudo-history and fringe theories (which is not supported by academic scholars)in the article which closely related to fascist ideology. That's why I said that he must edit the metapedia instead of wikipedia. He deleted sources references and sentences. Australian people category

Hi Graham, I saw you removed the "Category:Australian people of English descent" from William Forster (Australian politician). I understand that Australia, as a country, didn't exist didn't exist until 1901. Australia, the country, took it's name from Australia, the place (or continent). But Australia did exist as a place for thousands of years before 1901. e.g. New South Wales was referred to as one of the Australian colonies in the 19th century. On that basis, the category should be re-instated for Forster, don't you think? It doesn't really matter what status the place was at the time, it was still "Australia" before 1901 and an "Australian person of English descent" is still a valid statement about a 19th century person. Church cantata (Bach)

I believe that the above name would be more appropriate for what is historically called List of Bach cantatas by liturgical function, which is not precise any more, because came to be also a list of the prescribed readings, and lists several non-liturgical cantatas. Also, the redirect is already shown in the works' infoboxes, we could avoid an awkward piped link. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:37, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
