Help us design granular blocks!
Hello :-) The Anti-Harassment Tools team at the Wikimedia Foundation will start building these granular blocking tools in a few weeks and we've asked WMF designer Alex Hollender to help us make some wireframes so the tools are intuitive to MediaWiki users.
We have a first draft of how we think this tool should work. You can read the full proposed implementation here but here are the significant parts:
Granular blocks (page, category, namespace, and file uploading) will be built on top of Special:Block. These blocks will function as if they were regular blocks and allow for the same options, but only take effect on specific pages.
We will add a new checkbox for "Block this user from the whole site" which will be checked by default. When it is unchecked the admin will be able to specify which pages, categories, and/or namespaces the user should be blocked from editing.
Granular blocks can be combined and/or overlap. (For example, a user could be simultaneously blocked from editing the articles Rain, Thunder, Lightning, and all pages inside the Category:Weather.)
Only one block is set at a time, to adjust what the user is blocked from the administrator would have to modify the existing block.
Block logs should display information about the granular block
When a blocked user attempts to edit an applicable page, they should see a block warning message which include information on their block (reason, expiration, what they are blocked from, etc.)
If a category is provided, the blocked user cannot edit either the category page itself and all pages within the category.
If the File: namespace is blocked, the user should not be allowed to upload files.
We like this direction because it builds on top of the existing block system, both a technical and usability wise. Before we get too far along with designs and development we'd like to hear from you about our prosposal:

We believe this should be an expansion of Special:Block, but it has been suggested that this be a new special page. What are your thoughts?
Should uploading files be combined with a File namespace block, or as a separate option? (For example, if combined, when a user is blocked from the File namespace, they would neither be able to edit any existing pages in the File namespace nor upload new files.)
Should there be a maximum number of things to be blocked from? Or should we leave it up to admin discretion?

Another timeline
Hey Graham, what do you think of the timeline on Sum 41? User:Walter Görlitz? I can't make out what's happening with Deryck Whibley, or not easily, and the separate line for "studio albums"--does that mean that Whibley was a touring drummer before he drummed on the studio albums? And that none of the other ones are on studio albums? Oh no--Tom Thacker has a few years of "studio albums" alongside what I think is a dark green line meaning "lead guitar", I think? But Thacker apparently played lead AND rhythm guitar (and did backing vocals) so he should have dark green AND light green (besides pinkish for backing vocals) and for a while black for studio albums? NORBIT picture
Hi Graham, I saw that you removed the link to a picture of four NORBIT modules in the NORBIT article [2]. Unfortunately, the article lacks any illustrations or photos, that's why I added this link to what, I think, is one of the best photos showing NORBIT 2 modules among the few that can be found in the net at all.
Does your screenreader provide any means to "describe" pictures? The photo shows four colorful modules looking like over-sized DIP ICs diagonally arranged in front of a matchbox - it's quite a nice photo, a pity that you can't see it for yourself.
I would prefer to keep it in the article for as long as nobody turns up a photo that can be included in the article body (which may take some years given the rarity of these modules today). What do you think?

Hi Matthias, rules are rules ... if we let that link in, that might start a slippery slope. (We can ignore them, though ...). I'm assuming the images were made by the person who made the site ... who happens to be a Wikipedian. While this is a good idea, I'd like to point out that you are applying WP:ELNO #11 "links to personal web pages" incorrectly. Per the definition given there a personal web page or blog is one about the owner of the page. A privately held page about a non-personal subject is per that very definition not a personal web page. Therefore, the inclusion criteria is quality. If the link to the "NORBIT" modules is a quality link and if it helps to improve the article for as long as we don't have a picture to include directly (which is even better, of course), the link can be included per WP:ELYES and WP:ELMAYBE.
This also applies to that site about Miriam Makeba as well. It is a privately held web page, but not a personal web page. Therefore, our rules don't forbid in any way to include links to it. Again, the inclusion criterium is quality. Is it legal and does its inclusion improve the article or not? That's the question that needs to be answered.
@Matthiaspaul: Nope, a "content of a personal nature" does encompass a person's interests ... as the article itself says, " Many personal pages only include information of interest to friends and family of the author. However, some webpages set up by hobbyists or enthusiasts of certain subject areas can be valuable topical web directories." However, I've had a think about this specific situation, and since I've made exceptions like this for sounds (with a site about organs called Virtuallybaroque.com, whose author is sadly no longer with us), I thought it'd be good to make an exception for a link to pictures. Power Set
I disagree with the notation. The power set is a \it set \rm of sets.
The notation "\emptyset" is a single element of nothing despite the misleading name LaTeX gave it. It is not a set by itself.
The notation "{\emptyset}" is a set with a single element of nothing in it. It counts as one "set" in the binomial coefficient.
Hope this clarifies my position on the topic. I'd like to see the wiki page revised to reflect {\emptyset}.

Why am I blocked as sock puppet from PN on my mobile phone?
@Graham87: Hi Graham87, hope you are well. You put me on a block as a sock puppet although I am not one, and also am not from Pennslyvania nor have I actually ever lived there.
I haven't noticed my edits causing a problem on the talk pages as we typically find consensus. Furthermore, the pages that I am editing have quite a few issues that I am qualified to fix, and even planning to contact Wikipedia's legal team due how frankly, propagandistic some pages are concerning topics that involve wars that the US is currently involved with and has troops on the ground. Sincerely, as an American, I find it troublesome that some of these articles are not even written correctly in some cases at all and almost perplexed on why I was blocked on mobile (it seems that I can still edit on my laptop, so perhaps this was a mistake?). Although the Brecker Brothers page itself doesn't say that the brothers were prominent with composing, the albums say that. Many of their studio albums say "All compositions by Randy Brecker except when noted", along with some by Michael Brecker. Does it still mean I can't add the fact he's a composer, and do I really have to add the information about both of their prominent composing on the Brecker Brothers page itself and Randy Brecker's "biography" section? Diamantina Deep
Diamantina Deep article created in 2006 says its 8047m and the deepest point in the Indian Ocean. Java Trench article says its 7725m and (also) the deepest in the Indian Ocean. How do you fix this? I’m guessing the depth for Diamantina hasn’t been corroborated.

2607 range
Hi. I sometimes edit while not logged in, but have recently found this to be nearly impossible. Virtually every time I try to edit a page in the area to which I recently moved (using many different wireless networks), the IP range I am located in has been blocked. Recently these have fallen in an IPv6 Range starting with 2607, all of which seems to have been blanket blocked by you in response to the Dog and Rapper vandalism case. I wanted to ask whether such a large range of IP blocking is necessary to quell this vandalism. Chubbles (talk) 02:47, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Civil engineering
I would like to talk with you about the edits you have deleted from my edits regarding civil engineering systems on the civil engineering page. I am still learning the ropes about Wikipedia contributions and you perhaps felt my edits were too subjective. I accept that may be the case initially but my changes today 25th July I felt were not. You have reverted the entry to one that is simply not correct by the literature we both agree to reference. Civil engineering systems is a discipline that promotes systems thinking to manage complexity and change in civil engineering within the wider context of society - it is not a speciality or sub=discipline within civil engineering as quoted by the authors. I'd be pleased to know your feelings on this point.

We've had a quick introduction at some place personally a while ago, maybe it was at Wikimania in Esino Lario?!
We would like to invite you to test exposure of “Page Previews” feature in screen readers. Readers department has successfully released Page Previews on all Wikipedias several months ago. It enables GUI users to have a preview (an image and an excerpt) of an article by hovering or keyboard focussing a link. It helps users to not have to go down rabbit holes and more quickly gather what a linked article/term is about. Due to a series of technical constraints we've needed some extra time to provide a basic support of them in screen readers.
Without wanting to bore you, just a sentence: on the pure technical side we've added dynamically aria-describedby on keyboard focus (!) which on its own might not be the right way. But let's continue the bigger story for the moment. :)
The test wiki is setup with real content is setup at https://a11y.wmflabs.org/wiki/Main_Page and you should be able to test without registering. It also features MonoBook if you register – I've seen on a Phabricator task that you seem to prefer it over Vector.
Please, if you got an hour to let us know about it's impact on your reading experience. Does it for example actually provide a beneficial improvement in not needing to go back and forth between articles? Or is it to quickly to verbose?

If you navigate to another page from there, you will loose the monobook setting, but might save you creating an account. your reversion, quite justified, sort of, Frankston Reservoir (Parks Victoria) has an outflow, the peak overflow runs a channel through a canal up through the Blaxland Avenue Reserve, not listed on Frankston Council site. missing revision history
Do you have any idea if the missing edit histories from January - Nov 2001 exist anywhere? An example - the Scientology article was definitely not created by me in October 2001 (here's a version from April 2001 in the Wayback Machine), although I'm on the oldest edit listed in the active and nostalgia database. --The Cunctator (talk) 20:56, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

Hello - I'm Ryan, from Maryland, USA, and I've loved the wikipedia as an entity and an ideal since its inception. i spend 95% of my time on Wiki reading. I do contribute occasionally, although almost always I've done this anonymously.
Recently, from my T-Mobile device, I've not been able to edit anything. Nor was I able to retrieve my old password for this very account, which I created in maybe '05-'06...
Nor was I able to create a NEW account.
The reason for such prohibition that I was given included a .jpg of you, and a blank "reason" field.
Only that my IP range had been blocked due to "vandalism".
I can assure you quite completely that I've never vandalize a Wiki article. Truly, I'd rather urinate on my grandmother. I do understand that anonymous edits are somewhat more prone to be malfeasant; this being said, it's a tenet of wikipedia itself to be freely editable by anyone - anytime - and not subject to undue censorship.
The original prophylactic IP range ban was set to expire a few days past. I waited a bit, and tried again just now. The block had just been renewed - by you.
Much keening and wailing, gnashing of teeth and rent garments later I literally drove twenty-two miles (thats like 1000 kilometers) to my mother's house (who has dementia) and searched high and low for the key to the old storage unit, which I found, then drove another forty miles to that one garage-doored unit with the limo containing severed heads in formaldehyde/US flags/dust and other detritus, and found the PC tower I used from '02-'08, BROUGHT IT HOME, used it to access an old email account, used the old email account to reset my Wikipedia password, and am using this opportunity to ask you to maybe not ban entire IP ranges again and again.
