Discussions are taking place on the update to the Manual of Style for Thailand-related articles.[edit]

The Manual of Style for Thailand-related articles (the original discussion regarding which you were involved in) has been in limbo as a historic proposal for quite a while. Discussions are taking place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Thailand#Updating the Manual of Style in hopes of developing the page into a usable guideline. A major issue being discussed is the naming of articles on Thai royalty, which so far has relied on the status quo, but lacks clear community consensus. You may be interested in contributing to the discussion. Thank you. --Paul_012 (talk) 20:31, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Raions[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you moved a lot of Ukraine locations to new names. I am not an expert on the Ukraine so I have no comment on the name changes except that you changed many of the Raions to "Raion" and many to "raion". It is not proper formatting that some should be capitalized and some should not, so could you please rename some of the articles so that they are all one way? Thanks so much for working to improve Wikipedia. — Reinyday, 16:46, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Move request for Talk:Isarco[edit]

Hello. Could you move Talk:Isarco to Talk:Eisack? In 2007, users voted there 5.5-1 in favour of "Eisack", with 2.5-1 against "Isarco". Despite the quite clear outcome of the discussion and the vote above, though, the page had been unilaterally moved by User:Icsunonove on 27 September 2007, who was incidentally the only one who had voted against "Eisack". Since the talk page is protected, it needs the actions of an admin to move it to its proper place. Regards Gun Powder Ma (talk) 23:21, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I mean 5x expansion by you or another user in the last 5 days. Mario1987 09:24, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You can't do anything with this article because it's to large. Beeing 14kb you have to make it a 70kb and that is nearly impossible. I suggest you try to nominate a hook from an article created by yourself in the last five days it's easier. If you have other questions feel free to write again. Cheers! No problem. Mario1987 14:17, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you could just create a List of capitals by average temperature. Actually, some people have argued that this is just another cliche, though I guess one could also turn it into something useful for PR, say replace 'cold' by 'cool'. Yaan (talk) 19:04, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bogd Khan[edit]

Hi, I think this whole 'emperor' and 'khan' business is all a bit misleading. His position was more like that of the Dalai Lama in 1911-1951 Tibet, I'd say. I.e. he was really not just a political, but also (maybe even more importantly) a religious figure. In my opinion it is therefore better to just refer to him by his title, and then usually I prefer Jebtsundamba Khutughtu because this is what he was all the time, as opposed to Bogd Khan which he only became in 1911. 'Bogd Khan' has the extra problem that before 1911, it was the title used for the Qing emperors in Beijing, and is occasionally used as such in old literature (Przhewalski and the like). Regards, Yaan (talk) 19:04, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I really think your edits are generally alright, even if I sometimes might sound a bit different. In the case of Mongolia, it often is a bit difficult to tell fact from fiction. For example, most Mongolians might not even be aware that there is a ninth Javzandamba Khutagt. Yaan (talk) 19:21, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sukhbaatar statue[edit]

Hi, may I ask where that info about the Sukhbaatar statue replacing his mausoleum is from? If this refers to the statue in the center of Sukhbaatar square, this one was already there before the goverment palace was extended. Although it got a new paint also around 2006. The statue is just not visible on that old picture on the government palace article because of the angle. The statue is in the center of the square, the mausoleum was closer to the northern edge. The government palace was extended southward, that was the reason why the mausoleum had to go. Btw. google earth shows the construction site. Regards, Yaan (talk) 19:39, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mongolia, political status[edit]

Hi, I hope you are aware that Mongolia is neither part of China, nor strives to be one? Your comment at Talk:9th Jebtsundamba Khutughtu looked a bit strange. Yaan (talk) 11:44, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gryffindor,

I received your e-mail about the Ortisei name change. According to Wikipedia:Naming conventions, we must use the name that most English speakers would most easily recognize. The editors in favor of the move provided evidence that Ortisei was the most-used name in the English-speaking world. One editor initially disputed that, but his concerns were addressed in the further discussion. No other editors provided valid points based on Wikipedia policy.

You also asserted that a majority of votes is required. This is a common misconception. With the exception of a few processes, English Wikipedia does not work by majority vote. For the most directly applicable guideline which deals with this, see Wikipedia:Polling is not a substitute for discussion, especially the section on Deletion, moving and featuring. You should also read WP:Consensus (particularly the section marked Participating in community discussions). For a guide on how administrators determine consensus in discussions, you should read WP:Rough consensus; while it is concerned with deletion, the same logic applies to most discussions.

If, after reading all of the above policies and guidelines, you are still convinced that Ortisei is not the correct name, you are free to request a new name change at WP:RM. Cheers,--Aervanath (talk) 05:51, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move[edit]

Can you move Province of Bolzano-Bozen to Province of Bolzano/Bozen per consensus (see Talk:Province of Bolzano-Bozen/Naming#Province of Bolzano/Bozen)? Thanks. --Checco (talk) 00:09, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A simple techinical issue about hypens and slashes is becoming something bigger and our "Bolzano/Bozen" old compromise (was it good or bad) is increasingly in danger. Probably a broader discussion would be OK, but I'm sorry that a techincal issue was not taken as it was by some users. In the meantime, why don't you express your position about the hyphen/slash issue? --Checco (talk) 23:38, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So why don't you vote in favor of it? --Checco (talk) 23:58, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Raions of Ukraine[edit]

Hi. I noticed your working on the Ukraine Raions. I was curious what naming convention your using? I'm asking because I began working on it myself and was following the list on Raions of Ukraine. I have noticed some variations in the names (here). It is the same here also:Template:Subdivisions_of_Crimea. To be honest I'm not sure which spellings are correct. Thanks. BaomoVW (talk) 02:55, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help although I'm still a bit unclear on Romanizing the names. Are you simply removing the -(t)skyi? Maybe there is a list other than Raions of Ukraine that I could follow? I agree that 'Raion' should be captialized. Cheers. BaomoVW (talk) 20:57, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great! I've copied and started to update the list here User:BaomoVW/Sandbox, when compared to the original Raions of Ukraine it should be easy to see which ones need updates. There are quite a lot! BaomoVW (talk) 03:35, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding "On January 21, 1896, Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria issued an Imperial Warrant to William Steinway." which you have added to the article about Steinway & Sons (Steinway & Sons#New Steinway Factories). If the Imperial Warrant is to William Steinway and not to the company Steinway & Sons, I think we should move the sentence to the article about William Steinway. Italian Villas etc[edit]

I have reverted your pointless edit here [2], which I have only just spotted. Making images so large that the text is sandwiched into a narrow column is demeaning to the article, as is making pictures explaining a minor point of architecture larger than the lead image which actually concerns the subject. I spend a great deal of time finding images to explain points, you making them so large that the point is lost, or out of proportion, is less than helpful. Please consider these facts and the integrity of a page before making such edits again. Thank you. Giano (talk) 21:45, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Teatro Regio di Torino[edit]

Hi. I've just noticed that you moved the title of this page to Royal Theatre of Turin and I'm wondering why - I've never heard it referred to by that name. I've had a look at List of opera houses and I can't see many other houses whose names have been translated into English. In my experience, English speakers refer to most opera houses in countries where the local language is French, Spanish, Italian, German by their local names - La Scala rather than The Staircase, La Monnaie rather than The Mint, Theater an der Wien rather than Theatre on the River Wien, Opéra-Comique rather than Comic Opera, Teatro Real rather than Royal Theatre. The few exceptions are very well-known houses with generally recognised English names (e.g. Vienna State Opera) and names in Scandinavian, East European, Far East, etc. languages - see here. Any comments before I revert your move? Best wishes. --GuillaumeTell 16:28, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Tjampuhan Hotel[edit]

An editor has nominated Tjampuhan Hotel, an article which you have created or worked on, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tjampuhan Hotel and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. -- Eastmain (talk) 21:04, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Saint Edward's Chair in England
Naderi Throne in Iran
well I do feel that the article describes more the institution of the throne rather than the throne itself. The throne in Kyoto is after all the Chrysanthemum Throne isn't it? There is nothing written about its history, how is it used, when, what, etc.? Gryffindor (talk) 14:45, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you've correctly identified what's possibly missing in this article. My concern was more specific -- I was a bit uncertain about whether the positioning of the image in the upper right corner needed explanation or defending?

In my view, the generic image of an emperor in a chair remains a better option than a contemporary photograph of the outside of the Shishinden in Kyoto.

I have seen a black and white photo of the raised platform used in ceremonies that accompanied Emperor Taisho's accession. If I could remember where I saw it, that old photograph would be an ideal image for posting in the upper right corner.
David's The Coronation of Napoleon
I have the impression that there is no single piece of extant furniture in Japan which might be considered comparable to King Edward's Chair or, for example, the less exalted seat of Napoleon's mother which is positioned centrally in Jacques-Louis David's The Coronation of Napoleon (1805-1808)?

In other words, there is no Japanese "national treasure" like Iran's Naderi throne. In Japan, I imagine that the List of National Treasures (chairs) remains a null set?

Curiously, I note that someone has posted an interesting external link at the bottom of the page of the article about Emperor NinkoKazu-No-Miya Chikako. In this early photograph of Emperor Kōmei's sister (and Tokugawa Iemochi's wife), she appears to be seated; but I don't imagine the Imperial Household records can lead us to find out what happened to that specific chair?--Tenmei (talk) 21:47, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I sometimes wonder - I am not going to touch the article - but hell in 1975 (?) they were panicking about the same issues - when I was regularly visiting the place in 1985.1995.1996 - there were issues which the Indonesian government was aware of - any NGO consultancy/UN Body from outside of Indonesia never gets anywhere with their advice - even if the Indonesians put armed guards (which I encountered after the bombings in the 1980's) - all archeological sites in java have the same problem - the people are poor if they can lift it - the biggest miracles in Javanese archaeological history is when gold hordes and the candi i used to live next to - actually survive discovery... tourism in the end will destroy all the sites - with help from the government - oops sorry - I just remember my best experience of Yogyakarta - the rainy season - Borobodur and the other monuments need umbrellas to last even another 100 years - the thing was they were covered by either earth or vegetation in the past to protect them from the elements - prettying them up for tourists is a kiss of death for the stone SatuSuro 15:35, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of images on New York City Subway station articles[edit]

I don't understand your removal of images in multiple station articles' infoboxes. Some of the pictures you are adding are better, some aren't. Can you move the images to the gallery section instead of removing them entirely? Please enlighten me on your rational.

Thanks, Acps110 (talkcontribs) 16:18, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

hi there,
I have replaced, and not removed as stated in your message, images from the infobox which I deem to be of better quality. In order to show the rest, I have added an image gallery whenever possible. If you disagree with some of the choices, it would help if you stated which image you find contentious. cheers. Gryffindor (talk) 17:05, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry about removed; you're right, replaced. Here are some examples of pictures that could be moved to a gallery section instead of removed.
Can the above changes be made?
Acps110 (talkcontribs) 18:07, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
hi,
what you see as "blurred" trains, I see as dynamic images where the train is clearly moving. These were taken without a flash, in order to give a better impression of the station as it appears to the human eye (apart from the moving train of course). By using flash, the composition of light, colour, etc. completely changes in the image and stops becoming a true depiction of the object (speak: station) itself. The images of stations should not only show the platform, but also the train IMO. Commuters can also be shown. But I frankly find an image of a station devoid of trains or people flat and boring, there should be some kind of action in it to give an overall better impression of what normally goes on there. If there was an article about a ghost station, now that would be something different of course, don't you think? Gryffindor (talk) 05:42, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
1st image: use of flash, no train to be seen and not much of the rest of the station either. 2nd image: Flash used again, no people, no train, nothing dynamic about it. 3rd image: I kinda like it as well, but the name of the station cannot be seen unlike the replacement. And I prefer the train when it moves (but that's just a personal preference). 4th: what's wrong with the caption? Gryffindor (talk) 05:48, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I see your point on the quality of the two images that were taken with a flash. I don't have the same opinion on moving trains.
  • I'm dropping my support of the 68th Street-Hunter College pic.
  • I don't think the flash use on the Rector Street image significantly degrades that image. There is some slight reflection of the flash on the column and wall tile. I don't support your opinion that every image must include people and/or trains. The system is vast and varied, these "empty platform" pics can be included, but shouldn't necessarily be the infobox pic.
  • I still like the Wall Street (Lex) pic. I don't think the station name has to be included in the pic in the infobox. (Many stations have pictures of street stairs in their infoboxes.) If the station name is not in the picture, it should definitely be in the file name though.
  • Caption on the 4th says... "The Lexington Avenue upper-level local station, opened in 1918." A good picture needed for that article, but not what is depicted. A better caption would be "A station mosaic name tablet on the upper level."
I have re-added the Rector Street and Wall Street pics to their respective galleries. I have re-captioned the 59th Street mosaic. Can you take a better picture of the upper level that is similar to the lower level picture already shown, to better illustrate the difference between the two levels?
Acps110 (talkcontribs) 17:53, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So you prefer images where the train is not moving? I will see what I can do. Gryffindor (talk) 17:02, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'll look forward to it. Acps110 (talkcontribs) 00:18, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't remember if I took the Rector Street image with a flash, I don't believe I did. (The original image was darker than the posted one, my editing may have sucked.) But I tend not to use a flash in my pictures (at least my most recent ones) because they do throw off the lighting. The reflection that "destroys" the image comes from the lights on the left. That's one of the common problems I face that I can't avoid. See File:Grand Street BMT Canarsie SB platform.jpg for example, which would be better without the reflections. I only stated taking subway pictures recently, and I am realizing lighting is a major factor in producing good-quality images; I apologize if my photography is not as good as yours.

In response to dynamism in images, there are plenty of images that don't include people in them, and that's the preference of many photographers in the subject. Take a look at the pictures at nycsubway.org and you'll find many of them don't include people. It is the station that should be the focus, with people or without. For a good example of a moving-train picutre, see File:NYCSub 7 Vernon Jackson 3.jpg, which was nominated for Featured Picture but was rejected due to a lack of educational value. Finally, I do not remove links to other images on pages as to be considerate to the original picture-taker. Tinlinkin (talk) 07:44, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Nathaniel Wheeler[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Nathaniel Wheeler at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. DYK for Nathaniel Wheeler[edit]

Updated DYK query On March 11, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Nathaniel Wheeler, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

The changes you are making to this article are breaking the layout and causing a huge amount of whitespace to be created. Please discuss your changes on the article's talk page, and perhaps we can work together to add some of the material you want to insert, but in the meantime, please stop adding it yourself, because you are doing it very badly. Re: 23rd Street (IRT Lexington Avenue Line)[edit]

Your edit to 23rd Street (IRT Lexington Avenue Line) leaves tons of unecessary white space on the left side that mine reduces. The only white space mine has is in the middle where the potential fourth image would be. I doubt that the browser makes any difference, but I've got Internet Explorer 8. ----DanTD (talk) 03:01, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the infobox is on the right, and your edits leave a huge space on the opposite side that forces users to scrolll down just to see any of the images in the gallery. By adding "perrow=2", I'm preventing that obstacle. ----DanTD (talk) 19:15, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Close. The gallery isn't blocking the box on the right, but it is forced down on the bottom of that box. And I doubt that the type of software or the monitor I'm using matters that much. I've had some of the same problems when I've used IE 7(as you can see in this edit, of Pavonia-Newport (HBLR station)) and bigger monitors than this. As for my monitor, I forget the size, but I believe it's between 16" and 20." ----DanTD (talk) 00:35, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Embassy naming conventions[edit]

I was wondering if there was a dicussion at WP:FOR before you moved all those embassy articles. I know there was a convention which is why there were the way they were, and I'm curious to know if it has been changed or what. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 23:24, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't particularly care for the older names of those articles, but I would still suggest building consensus before you move hundreds and hundreds of them. That's a lot of work to do to have them all undone. And I disagree that there in any name for them that is not OR (your formula included) since an "embassy" refers to the mission and not the building, be we have foolishly wrote articles about buildings (I have brought this up many times to no end). --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 23:53, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Allow me to illustrate. Canada House and Macdonald House are buildings. The High Commission of Canada in London (or even better ...in the United Kingdom) is a mission. This is the pattern I have been trying to get all of our articles to follow, to no avail. Londoners might colloquially call either of the buildings the "Canadian Embassy", but they would be wrong and the article on those buildings shouldn't live there. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 21:52, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just for sh(o)ts and giggles, I just wrote a stub for Embassy of Canada building (Mexico City) to show how a building article differs from a mission article. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 22:50, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How about Embassy of Canada to Japan or Embassy of Canada to Japan in Tokyo? I think that is much, much better than Canadian Embassy, Tokyo which feels a bit like an entry in a directory rather than a proper name. OR Canada House (Berlin)? --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 16:57, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Gryffindor - on March 30th, you moved Embassy of Estonia in Ottawa to Estonian Embassy, Ottawa, but the new name is now out of sync with all of the missions named in {{Diplomatic missions in Canada}}. Can you please reverse the article move? Thanks in advance, PKT(alk) 14:16, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply, but I don't understand why you think "Estonian Embassy in Ottawa" is wrong when that's exactly how it's named on their website. It's not a particularly long name, either. PKT(alk) 16:21, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
'k, we'll probably have to agree to disagree on this. Redirects will help us find a compromise. PKT(alk) 23:08, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Austrian People's Party logo.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Austrian People's Party logo.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Please be careful with splits[edit]

Please be careful with splitting of articles, because you can see, this has created problems with referencing on the article. You also need to be careful when splitting articles that you take into account CC and GFDL licencing requirements. Additionally, the move of information from the article, has clearly removed information from the article that should be present there. Please see notes on Talk:Consulate-General of Russia in New York City and discuss this before reverting/removing information. Cheers, --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 07:00, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I'll post this here, as you seem to be more active here. This edit on Commons removed categories which are relevant. I have now added the removed categories to commons:Category:John Henry Hammond House. Anyway, it's great to have more photos of the Russian C-G in NYC available to us. Cheers, for those. --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 07:06, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Diplomatic mission articles - naming issues[edit]

You probably are thinking the naming of articles concerning specific embassies and consulates is a bit disorganised. However I note in [[5]] the idea of a consistent format was mooted: {type of mission} of {country} in {name of city}. Do you have any ideas? (feel free to join the project page!) Kransky (talk) 06:18, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on The Cecil requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Codf1977 (talk) 12:36, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Animal protection has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This seems to be a single-purpose advocacy/opinion article, and is pretty much just a copy of [6]. There's no way to objectively validate it's list of "nations and their components of animal protection (listed in descending order of relevance, the left most component is the most relevent)" - it just seems to be a single author's opinions from a piece of original research.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I have nominated Animal protection, an article that you created, for deletion. Moves[edit]

Hi! May I ask you: what are you doing? The title of the article about Mary of Austria, Queen of Hungary was determined through discussion and consensus. On a related issue, we have discussed so much about disambiguating consorts with names such as Eleanor of Portugal and in each case, we agreed that using the marital title is better than using years of birth and death. Please don't ignore this anymore. Start a discussion and request a move. Surtsicna (talk) 20:50, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But several discussions have already taken place. A discussion took place at Talk:Mary of Austria, Queen of Hungary. Consensus achieved there cannot be ignored just because there is a guideline, which, by the way, does not prohibit using marital titles as means of disambiguation. Surtsicna (talk) 21:01, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (royalty and nobility)#Consorts with ambigious names. Surtsicna (talk) 21:23, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! May I also say that titles are a better way of disambiguating the articles, if a person is say searching for Elisabeth of Poland, Queen of Hungary, they would see several women with their dates of birth and death and it is unlikely they'd know which one to look at. Also, titles are alot more notable than dates of birth and death. I did create or expand many of the articles being moved. Thank You--David (talk) 16:24, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Emir or Emirate?[edit]

bornu and neighboring states circa 1750

I just expanded Zazzau Emirate from a redirect to a stub. Then I spotted that you had just expanded Emir of Zazzau from a redirect to the stub! I suppose technically the Emir and the Emirate are different, but am not sure that there would be enough content to justify two articles. No strong feelings. Comments? Aymatth2 (talk) 17:22, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For now, I will redirect the Emir to the Emirate and keep on expanding. It can always be split out again later. I have a feeling the Emirate article should be split: Zazzau Hausa State and the successor Fulani State, perhaps better called Zaria Emirate. I will see how much content I can find and maybe split later.
I have been haphazardly trying to create basic entries for the traditional states and their current rulers. What I find is that most states whether in the north, west or east do not follow strict inheritance, but the ruler is appointed by a council of kingmakers from one or more royal families (there may be two or three families). A person could be "royalty" as a member of a royal family, but not a "ruler". Nowadays there is a fashion to appoint a "traditional ruler" for every small community, regardless of whether it was ever an independent state. With these, the governor just picks a leading figure, usually a politician, so a person could be "ruler" but not "royalty".
I have been vaguely thinking of breaking down the traditional states into type categories. Obvious ones are Yoruba, Hausa 7+7, Other emirates, Other. I suspect this does not work... Aymatth2 (talk) 17:50, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Complicated and interesting. Nigeria is far more diverse than Europe, and had sophisticated states like the Bornu Empire and Ile-Ife when Europe was in the dark ages. Wiki coverage is hopelessly incomplete. Just wish I had the background to do more than stubs. Aymatth2 (talk) 18:09, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Gryffindor, You stated on Template_talk:Christianity#Face_of_Jesus_or_Cross.3F: "Why is the image a face of Jesus taken by User:Carlaude instead of a simple cross that truly represents Christianity?" Well, you and other users said that a cross or something else is preferable to the Jesus face image, so I just changed it to "Three Crosses.jpg" under the grounds of WP:BRD: there is no consensus, but many people are against the current Jesus face image, so I made the edit to facilitate more discussion and move towards resolution of the disputed image. Carlaude just wrote that I should not go against the consensus by posting a different pic, but there is no consensus for the Jesus face image! He further stated I should revert the image or he will. Should I revert the image, or should Carlaude allow more discussion instead of reverting my image? This is my first time doing WP:BRD, and your comments on the talk page would be much appreciated.

Category Concerns[edit]

Hi, as an admin would you please tell me why is Str1977's sandbox coming up in the Paul Robeson section as an article? Is there a way to remove it or is it applicable per wiki rules that it be included? I assume it should not be alongside proper articles as it is a personal practice edit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Paul_Robeson Thanks for you time.Catherine Huebscher (talk) 14:03, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Wonderful. It's vanished now. Cheers!Catherine Huebscher (talk) 21:23, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of Burma[edit]

The new version of the file is mostly fine, but the emblem became little asymmetrical and squished in the last round of tweaks. I've reuploaded a slightly cleaner version of the new rendition. As for the ratio, the 9:5 ratio was not set down until the 1947 constitution. British Burma's flag was at 1:2 and the Konbaung flag probably didn't have a set ratio (and if it did no record of it survives). It would be anachronistic to put the State of Burma flag in this ratio. I've changed the image back to 2:3 since that corresponds to the photo and the FOTW image based on the photo. Okay, uploaded a new version. Look alright? Orange Tuesday (talk) 14:55, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File copyright problem with File:Esperanza.Birthday.gif[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Esperanza.Birthday.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Kelly hi! 09:16, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Esperanza.Coffee.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Esperanza.Coffee.gif. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 09:17, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New picture: query[edit]

Hello Gryffindor, Thank you for adding the beautiful picture of the stained glass window. Could you clarify, if possible, what you meant by the "old" Theater an der Wien? In some sense it's been the same theater for 200 years, but there have been various remodels, the last one just a few years ago. Thanks, Opus33 (talk) 23:59, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Opus33 (talk) 17:18, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to let you know that I found a source for some additional information for this, which I've added to the article, as well as doing some layout cleanup. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:37, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from 173.45.72.122. I have performed a search with the contents of Royal Warrant (United Kingdom), and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Royal Warrant. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. 173.45.72.122 (talk) 23:00, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

talk at Commons discussion[edit]

I saw your input at the Burma discussion, and thank you. We're arguing with a troll who was banned here at en:WP. I can't get the admins there to do anything about him. I wonder if we should just stop arguing and he will go away?

This guy http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:23prootie , banned here en:User:Elockid/Long-term abuse/23prootie. --Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 15:03, 17 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Doge's Palace[edit]

Hi. Now that Doge's Palace is a disambiguation page, don't forget that WP:FIXDABLINKS asks you to review the 150 or so other articles that contain links to "Doge's Palace" and fix them to point to the correct title. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:32, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Doge's Palace[edit]

Hi Gryffindor,

I'm surprised you moved the article again. After I had the Venice article restored, it's clear that the Doge's Palace -> Doge's Palace, Venice move is controversial, since it was opposed. Why didn't you start a WP:RM discussion instead of just moving it again? Now I'm going to have to restore it again. --JaGatalk 16:32, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Brazilian Empire" or "Empire of Brazil"[edit]

Hi, Gryffindor. I just saw your last edit creating the "Brazilian Empire category". The correct name is "Empire of Brazil". I believe you should fix it. Regards, --Lecen (talk) 22:17, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Krušovice beer logo.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Krušovice beer logo.PNG.

Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 13:55, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quit moving articles and changing names[edit]

You clearly know nothing of proper names nor of proper translations between German and English. Schloss Eggenberg, Trautenfels, Stainz etc. are Schlosses not castles and are best refereed to as palaces but only in explaining what they are, not in the names of the articles. Confirmation[edit]

Hello, my name is Mithrandir2, I used to be Mithrandir, but I hadn't used that account in over a year and I forgot the password to it so I couldn't log in, and the account is not connected to my email. I am back on editing and I recently created an article called Lightspeed Systems. I want to load some images, but I need to be a confirmed user. When previously on Wikipedia, I made a lot of contributions and I had rollback rights. Can you confirm me as a user? Thanks... Mithrandir (talk) 17:27, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Confirmation[edit]

Please see the page Wikipedia:User access levels. If you scroll down to the bottom of the chart, you can see that administrators have the right to confirm users. Can you ask a more experienced admin. how to do this? Thanks for your time... Mithrandir (talk) 15:54, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
