Invitation to the African Destubathon

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Karissa

I've been meaning to get around to creating a page for Allie for over a year, and hoped someone would do it, as I don't have a lot of time. When I started it, I was looking at various race results and found Karissa to be something of a nemesis, though she finished well in front of her at the XC nationals in 2017. I looked to see if Karissa had a page, so I could Wikilink her name in text. That's how I found your new page created for her. I actually used your medals template for Allie's page. That's a great picture of her, but I'm not sure there might not be an objection, depending whether or not it's in the public domain. Thanks to you I also looked at the list of American female steeplechase runners, expecting to find Jackson, Coburn and Simpson, and was surprised to see Shannon Rowbury. I didn't know she had ever run one. So I researched and found she had, in 2006, while at Duke, but couldn't find any date or location. She ran a 9:59.4. Activist (talk) 08:40, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Hey @Activist, thanks for the praise! Turns out there was an old page for Schweizer in 2016 but it unfortunately got deleted -- after recreating it from scratch I found a cached version of the 2016 article online and it looked fine, so it's a shame I didn't see it in time to contest that deletion. re: achievement table, I figured, the wording on the templates seemed very similar (which of course is fine!). The pictures I used on both articles are definitely freely licensed, they were a little tough to find because they're not tagged with names but if you click through you'll see that they were uploaded to Flickr as CC-BY licensed (by the parent of someone else who probably deserves their own article...) Going through their albums is a good source for collegiate photos as they upload all their photos as CC-BY and they have albums for a bunch of high-profile meets since 2013. I knew about Coburn and Simpson but Jackson was before my time -- so thanks for pointing me to that info! And I remember reading that tidbit about Rowbury, definitely interesting and a good reason for having the categories. Thanks for adding the details there to her article.
I might go through and create a bunch of NCAA articles in the coming weeks if I have time (and if I can find a better way to automate the table creation as a matrix-format like at Ewen, Rogers, etc.) I think there are a lot of athletes that meet NCOLLATH certainly deserving of an article that just don't have one yet. I also think there's a lot of creative ways we could go with it -- more meet articles (Payton Jordan, Stanford, etc. all don't have articles yet), more university-specific articles like Oregon Ducks track and field, finishing up the indoor records for List of United States collegiate records in track and field, more old NCAA champ articles (like for 2017), maybe some record progression / event-specific NCAA articles like "history of the steeplechase in collegiate athletics"... TFRRS

Thanks for establishing the TFRRS template. One problem which I will suggest you address in a revision, is that TFRRS produces multiple files for the same athlete. Here is Andre De Grasse at USC Habst/Archive 1 profile at TFRRS, but it ignores previous collegiate accomplishments at Andre De Grasse profile at TFRRS Coffeyville Community College and they also produced a random post collegiate article Habst/Archive 1 profile at TFRRS and a weird one for a 2013 indoor race Habst/Archive 1 profile at TFRRS. Its not you, me or wikipedia who is confused, its TFRRS. But how do we unify this chaos into something the wikipedia readers can understand? Trackinfo (talk) 06:57, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Trackinfo, that's a good point that I didn't originally consider when making the template.
The clearest way that I can think of to fix that would be to make the template accept multiple sets of numbered (id, label, xc) triples, so that it would be backwards compatible with old transclusions but also allow you to link a bunch of different TFRRS profiles to one athlete. So your Andre De Grasse example could become for example:
{{TFRRS|name=Andre De Grasse|id1=5095490|label1=At the University of Southern California|id2=4207601|label2=At Coffeyville Community College|id3=5720200|label3=One random post-collegiate article|id4=4200672|label4=A weird 2013 indoor race}}
And then that would display as something like this:
Andre De Grasse at TFRRS: At the University of Southern California, At Coffeyville Community College, One random post-collegiate article, A weird 2013 indoor race
I've seen the "numbered" parameters done on other sets of templates before so I'm sure I could study those and implement that some time this week.
There are also two smaller concerns I've had with the template recently but I'm not sure if they are really worth fixing / if they are even problems. The first is that we might be "losing" the slug information in some of the URLs, i.e. when we transform https://www.tfrrs.org/athletes/6568861/Coffeyville_CC/Tyrone_Thornton.html to https://www.tfrrs.org/athletes/6568861 via the template then we're losing the words "Coffeyville_CC" and "Tyrone_Thornton" in the original wikitext, even though they are obvious when you click the URL I worry this might not be good in the long run, especially if URLs go dead. I might try to make those two "slug" fields optional in the template so you can preserve them if you want. Also a few days ago I also saw a new URL format someone linked that had something like a UUID (with hex / not only numeric values) in the TFRRS link, and I'm not sure if that new / other format would work with my template. I can't re-find that now (I see you've done a lot of work replacing all the TFRRS links on Wikipedia so thank you so much for that!) so I might just forget about that until it comes up again.
But thanks so much for your thoughts on this, and thanks for using my template! I think I'm going to move forward with this plan some time this week if I can find time for it and figure it out technically. Assuming we make this viable, which may take multiple attempts as happened with the IAAF template for example, there could be potentially thousands of TFRRS transclusions, not that I want to spend the time to edit them all in. Hey @Trackinfo, I ended up getting my hands wet with Lua scripting for the first time today and I wrote Module:TFRRS, which is now being used in Template:TFRRS to make my example work and solve this problem. It should be fully backwards compatible with all the existing transclusions as well. For example see:

Awesome, thank you! Of course we wouldn't use that in an article, just using your words in your original post for demonstration . I updated the template doc with the basics but it could be improved a little more. Once we get it on a few more articles maybe I can try to see how best to integrate that info into Wikidata (in addition to the Tilastopaja and IAAF templates). JWB collegiate track and field redirect job

I'm about to run a WP:JWB job that creates track-specific redirects to general collegiate sports teams like Akron Zips track and field to Akron Zips, only where no track-specific article already exists and there is at least some mention of the presence of a track team on the general article. This is already done on many pages so I'm just completing the job, but I'll link to this topic in edit summaries. So yes I want to personally thank you for your hard work with the NCAA results. It is great to have a new face here, I have felt so alone. There are so many more historical results to attend to. And your results, complete with prose, are much better than I have done and a model for future improvements. Hey @Trackinfo, thanks so much for this! I hope to stay a while . As for the NCAA tables specifically, I wrote a little script to auto-generate them with colors and disambiguate the team names to their corresponding Wikipedia entries (e.g. Penn → Penn Quakers track and field) at User:Habst/Scripts/makencaatable.py and User:Habst/Scripts/fullteams.txt (latter list was just generated from some PetScan I ran earlier). If you have Python and the required libraries (I just use BeautifulSoup and requests), then you can generate the table by running it like: 
python3 makencaatable.py https://www.ncaa.com/sites/default/files/external/track-field/results/d1/outdoor18/Finals/041_Scores.htm decathlon
Still planning on finishing up that main article with prose though, haha. I also wrote a little article-template generator on my site that fills out the medal table based on Tilastopja stats here, but I've stopped using that recently because I don't like the output that much. I think it's tempting to just get robots to write the whole encyclopedia but I also really do like the prose so I'm trying not to do too many auto-jobs without incorporating a lot of language / subjectivity, which I think is super important.
I'm a student of the sport but still pretty young, so if you have any suggestions for older articles / concepts that need some love I'll definitely try to take those on. In light of the new World Champs qualifying method for 2019, I've been working a lot more on results integration with Wikidata recently -- I recently got IAAF ID integrated into the widely-used {{Authority control}} which I think is a big deal, and I built a Wikidata bot (proposal here) that can begin to populate WD with athletics results. Ultimately, my long term goal is to have an infobox template you can just stick on every athlete article automatically populated from Wikidata, that will list all their results in a centralized way so every language editor can improve them -- I think this should already be possible technically but just needs to be implemented. There's of course a lot of ways we can go with it, too.

I too enjoy the prose, explaining the sport, the strategy behind a bunch of people just running fast etc etc. I've been adding prose to World Championship and Olympic articles as I find youtube videos to source from.
By the way, creative stuff is my company name. The Python coding is way over my head currently, though I would welcome an education. But you'll have to start with the very basics . . . to turn it on, do this. I'm old, next season will be my 50th year of officiating and I have been competing longer than that. Still active even this month. So I will have more of a historical perspective. Feel free to bounce stuff off of me.
I have been trying to work my way backwards through history. I have a lot of old NCAA results and all USA National Championships downloaded and broken down into Excel. Manually compiling that into wiki is time consuming and I haven't had much time lately. Inevitably when I do a list article, I end up seeing a glaring missing article (or a bunch of them) that needs to be written. So many National Championships and Olympic Trials deserve prose but its been formatted out, so far. I like the way you have changed that in NCAA results and I'd like to expand on that. From your discussion above, Elizabeth Jackson steeplechaser is one article that is definitely still missing. I should make a list.
We also have a problem, system wide but focusing on our sport, where know-nothings attack our articles and delete content. I feel like a one armed paper hanger here trying to protect content against a marauding band of invaders trying to destroy our knowledge base. 1) do your best to avoid things that go against or even skirt policy. Contradicting that last statement, sometimes audacity is necessary to convey information (like the colored team representations in the 2018 NCAA results). If we can make it better, do it. I edited the women's 3000 steeple for the Outdoor NCAA Div I finals, but I couldn't locate a cell for Eastern Michigan. I also didn't red link the names of three finishers because there are articles for three others, not athletes, with the same name. I don't have time to do articles for any, I'm afraid. Hey Trackinfo, I agree with you that creative stuff is the most important part. Elizabeth Jackson has an article but I agree it could use a lot of expansion (and perhaps a disambiguation redirect from Liz Jackson). For deletions, I just keep an eye on the "Article Alerts" section of the Athletics WP home page and if there's something I feel like was wrongfully nominated I think the best strategy is to just address the nominator's rationale in an update to the article, and then comment saying you did that. I think closing admins tend to favor the side that has improved the article the most, so if you add well-sourced info and reference WP policies I think deletion discussions are usually winnable battles.
And Activist, thanks so much for adding that table, I was hoping to get around to that soon. It looks great, but I added some prose, plus a source for the results. For athletes that already have a wiki article of the same name I've just been adding wikilinks like [[X (athlete)|X]] instead, so I did that for the remaining athletes in the table. And for E. Michigan, the colors are all from Module:College color so you can just look in that page for the right string to use (you can always add "track and field" after it), so I made it Eastern Michigan Eagles. P.S. I've been backlogged on emails recently but will get back to everything after I finish the new Wikidata bot run and some new IRL commitments. WD ontology for sports

Hi, I see your bot updates on P1344 with several qualifiers (for instance, on Usain Bolt (Q1189). Now, I try to deep in the ontology should have the sports results, but also the classes related with structures as sports competition (Q13406554), sports season (Q27020041), recurring sporting event (Q18608583), recurrent event edition (Q27968055), sports season of a sports club (Q1539532), etc. Unfortunately, projectes as d:Wikidata:WikiProject Sports or d:Wikidata:WikiProject Sport results seems to be abandoned or to be oriented to upload data on basic structures (person, sport, team,...). In the d:Wikidata:WikiProject Olympics, I can't found specific information about ontology. Ex: Why do you upload all the events of a person in P1344 ?. Some athlete could have hundreds of entries. Or, perhaps, will not be uploaded all the events ?. why do you repeat the result information (as a qualifiers of P1344 in the athletes) when it already exists on the event item?. In summary, if exists any ontology criteria at this level of sport information, do you know where to find it?. Is the Olympics project in early status and still in process to define ?. Hi Amadalvarez, apologies for my delay. I also regret that the two projects you linked are inactive, and there is no real ontology for track and field events yet other than the one that my bot defines. Originally, the bot didn't repeat result info on both athlete and meet items, but I added it because someone requested that on the bot proposal page for it to be approved. I use P1344 "participant of" because another requested change was that each "event" at each competition should have its own item, so that it would mesh more easily with existing items and articles like Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 metres. I think the info should still be on the bot's proposal page. I've been pretty inactive recently, but maybe one day I will resume work on wikitrackbot. Habst (talk) 17:08, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

Good to see you still editing

I added to Karissa Schweizer's and Allie Ostrander's articles and wondered if you were still editing. I see you weren't for quite a while but have resumed doing so. I hope you got to see Karissa's double in the 5&10. I watched both online and on TV at the same time with a simultaneous but different feed. I watched the steeple as well, as I've followed Ostrander since she was a high schooler doing mountain running. I also noticed that Emily Lipari's article is in draft space. Hi @Activist:, it's good to hear from you again. That Trials was really something special, I watched every day of coverage so far. I was in high school at the same time as Ostrander so I remember her from then as well, it's a shame she has struggled with eating disorders.
I saw the Lipari page was deleted several years ago so I wanted to restore it because she now meets WP:NATH, I'll get to finishing that soon. Fun fact, I once paced Lipari in a track workout a few years ago. I wasn't as fast as her but fast enough to run half the workout, haha. She closed our workout with a ~26 low second 200 and a few years later she won the US road mile championships.
Anyways, I've really appreciated your track coverage here, and I'm hoping once I settle down and find a programming job I can spend more time editing, would be nice to make even more detailed Olympic coverage than 5 years ago here. Thanks for checking in. --Habst (talk) 05:56, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Recreation of WP:LUGSTUBS article

Hi Habst,

I see that you have recreated Alexandre Fayollat and George Patching by copying and pasting the content from Draft:Alexandre Fayollat and Draft:George Patching respectively. There are two issues with this.

First, copying and pasting the content, rather than moving, is problematic for attribution purposes; see WP:CUTPASTE. If the articles were to be kept the histories would need to be merged.

Second, the WP:LUGSTUBS consensus requires that sources are added that plausibly demonstrate WP:GNG before the article can be restored to mainspace. The sources you added (binktster, arrs, gbrathletics, la84, and la84) are all statistical databases; GNG is not plausibly demonstrated.

In the future, please do not restore articles drafted under LUGSTUBS unless you are able to plausibly demonstrate GNG, and if you are basing the article on Lugnut's work please make sure to move the article, rather than copying and pasting, to ensure that attribution is given. Hi @BilledMammal, both articles clearly meet WP:NATH because one is an Olympic medalist and another finished 4th in the Olympic 100m. As far as I'm aware, the Fayollat article was deleted in error, because WP:LUGSTUBS says "non-medalling Olympians" but he has an Olympic medal. So he never should have been listed at that page to begin with. Also, the LA84 site is not a statistical database, it is the Official Report and it contains prose. I can add other newspaper sources this week, there is significant coverage of these athletes. Thank you for bringing the copying issue to my attention, in the future we will move the articles for attribution.

You're right, Fayollat was caught in error as it lacked the relevant categories; I've removed the CSD from him on that basis. However, the attribution issue remains; I suggest you add the content to the draft before nominating it for deletion under G6 and then moving the draft back to mainspace. The alternative option is a history merge, but those are harder to do and in the case appears to be unnecessary.
You're also right about LA84; it does contain some prose. However, as it lacks independence it also cannot plausibly contribute to GNG.
I've left the tag on Patching as even if you do add the sources something needs to be done for attribution. I suggest you work on that article in draft space until it is ready for restoration? BilledMammal (talk) 11:32, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
@BilledMammal Thank you for removing the deletion tag on Fayollat's article. For attribution on the Patching article, can't a WP:DUMMY edit be made that simply links to the draft page in the edit summary, so that the attribution is noted and anyone who wants to see the prior history can navigate there?

Mauritz Kåshagen

Please check "what links here" when creating articles about athletes. You will find all the championships pages where the athlete is mentioned. A look at Kåshagen shows that there are a number of international championships which he competed in, that are not mentioned in the article. Hi Geschichte, thanks, in my recent batch of articles I have always checked Special:WhatLinksHere before creating and I do things like changing any unrelated links (to people with the same name) to add a disambiguation. For Mauritz Kåshagen specifically, I generally only include linked articles in the article body if they are international competitions and the athlete at least earned a medal or is discussed in detail at the article, and Kåshagen never won any medals at the European Athletics Team Championships, European Athletics Championships, or athletics at the Summer Universiade. I made an exception for the World Junior Championships because that was his most prestigious global championship.
But you are free to add them if you want to expand the article. I don't know Norwegian but there may be local coverage on his relay win at the 2019 Norwegian Athletics Championships that could be worth including. --Habst (talk) 13:29, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
Win a medal? Any article of any person are to describe everything they did during their career. "Discussed in detail at the article": Which article? What you should be looking for here are secondary Wikipedia:References that indeed discuss these participations in smaller or greater detail. A national relay medal "may" have local coverage, yes, but this is true for many other things as well, and the relay would be a very strange point to start the research. Furthermore, the World Junior Championship was not his most prestigious championship as the bar for entering is significantly lower than in senior championships, which by extension are the most prestigious championships. In addition, an article creator can of course say that "somebody else can do the job of adding all this", but then again, articles benefit more from being developed as drafts. @Geschichte Thank you, I agree that we should include as much as possible that's documented. I significantly improved Draft:Mauritz Kåshagen to remove all comments, I added records of all of his nationals finishes, and I described in prose all of the competitions in Special:WhatLinksHere/Mauritz Kåshagen plus several others. I also added several Norwegian-language references about Kåshagen that include some details about his injuries, the circumstances of his participation in the 2016 ECs, and his current activities.
I think the World Juniors was Kåshagen's most notable global championship, which is useful to mention because it's the most recognized across the world (especially outside of Europe). However I agree that's hardly what he is most known for, so I included as much as I could find and understand from translating the Norwegian sources.

Refrain from unused data

Inserting thousands of bytes of unused data into articles is not a viable strategy in creating articles. You can keep things like that in your user space, a Wikipedia:Sandbox or draft space. The reason I left some comments was because I thought the data could potentially be repurposed to fit the article in the future, but I see that much of it was unrelated anyways.
