Old username

Hi, and welcome (back). I gather from the fact that you made this page a redirect to User talk:Matt Hannan that you previously edited with that username. If that is so, you should state the fact on your user page. You might also link to the old talk page from this one, but I don't think that making it a redirect is a good idea. Discussions with High Noonan should be at User talk:High Noonan and the other should be a historical page for the historical user.

By the way, I wouldn't expect too much of WikiProject Irish Republicanism if I were you. It's been moribund for years. I still have it on my watchlist, which is how you caught my eye, but pretty well all the other members are either officially or unofficially retired. Scolaire (talk) 09:28, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Some of this Wiki stuff just seems overly complex. Would you be willing to assist a noob a bit? I no longer want to use User:High Noonan as a user name. I'd much rather be User:Matt Hannan. I tried following some HOWTO back in the day, but it did not seem to work properly (obviously). I was to get some confirmation from Wikipedia authorizing the change of my user name, but it never arrived. Now I have two accounts (?), one of which I have no idea how to log into (Matt Hannan). Basically, I want High Noonan Matt Hannan, you know? Any ideas?

The behind the scenes here at Wikipedia is also a bit overwhelming. All the different classes and importance levels, strangers cutting your work to ribbons, bots making edits. It can put a person off! I am looking for software that I could use to write the article offline and minimize the amount of updates that I will be making as I rebuild the article. Any suggestions? I am currently using Windows 7, but I can install a Linux distro as a virtual machine if need be.

As far as the Irish Republican project, I don't mind that the project is defunct. My article was tagged as Politics of the United Kingdom. That was just wrong on too many levels. I don't know what you've tried to do to access your account, so forgive me if I'm stating the obvious here. When you click on "Log in" you're brought to a page with basically only three things on it: "Username", "Password" and "Forgot your password?". If you click on "Forgot your password?" you're brought to the "Reset password" page. Now, you'll need to remember what email address you used when you created the account, and still be able to access it. You have the option of entering your username or entering your email address. I recommend entering the email address; then you'll know where to look for the message. If the address you originally used was not the one you thought you'd used, their email would go to the "wrong" address. If your email account was closed, or you can't access it for some reason, then there's probably nothing you can do.

Actually, strike all that. I just had a look at your talk page revision history and the Matt Hannan user page revision history. It looks as though they never actually moved you at all – just moved the talk page. You created a page named "User:Matt Hannan" this month, when you added the WP:IR template, but there's no record of an account being created. On the other hand, the contributions page says that Matt Hannan performed all those edits. It's obviously a technical glitch. You need to bring this to Wikipedia talk:Changing username and see if somebody can sort it for you (your original request is here, make sure you include it).

You don't need to worry too much about the behind the scenes stuff. The assessments – class and importance – are mostly for the WikiProjects. Project members are more likely to work on high-importance articles, like Michael Collins or U2, but a small number of users or a single user can bring a low-importance article up to a high standard, like A-class or Good Article. Bots generally only work on technical things that don't affect the content of the article, but remember that if you don't agree with what a bot did you can revert it, just as you would revert a human. As for strangers cutting your work to ribbons, that's an occupational hazard, I'm afraid. You're bound to do some things that other people disagree with, and bear in mind that some of your edits may be undoing other people's edits too. The thing to do is to open a discussion on the talk page, explain why you did what you did, and ask them to explain why they did what they did. If you reach deadlock, there are places you can go: the policy Wikipedia:Dispute resolution has all the details.

The easiest way to work offline is simply to use Microsoft Word (make sure that "automatically change straight quotes to smart quotes" is turned off), but then you miss out on all the tools. To work online, click "sandbox" on the top right hand of the screen next to your username. In your sandbox you can work on the text, cites etc. to your heart's content, without any interference from anybody, and when you're satisfied with what you've done, you can copy it into the article.

By the way, notice how I indented my reply by typing a colon at the start of the paragraph. Two colons will indent it again, and so on. When you start paragraphs with colons, you don't need a line break between paragraphs.

The standard citation would be "Bureau of Military History, WS 430 (Thomas Barry), p. 22", which is typed "Bureau of Military History, [http://www.bureauofmilitaryhistory.ie/reels/bmh/BMH.WS0430.pdf#page=23 WS 430] (Thomas Barry), p. 22". Scolaire (talk) 17:35, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

I've udpated the image page on the one I'd flagged with an appropriate Non-free license and NFUR, If on the other hand you can show the image is actually now in the public domain ( which given the date of its production is a possiblity) , I am more than happy to consider changing it to {{PD-US-1923-abroad).
