Good guess, but it's not that Jethro (but that said, not many people are aware of Gibbs' middle name!). I got the name Jethro in high school because 1) my real first name is incredibly common and 2) Because my friends were fans of the rock group Jethro Tull. I didn't start liking them until much later. It's also a tribute to some of the earliest science fiction stories about artificial intelligence.
Interesting! Leroy and Jethro always struck me as an interesting part of Gibbs' name, and they mention his full name sometimes on the show so I remember it. You're an NCIS fan too? --Activism1234 05:03, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

By the way, per this conversation with Dave, I've decided to wait about a year or so before I seriously consider adminship. I think I have the right attitude for the mop, and although I am proud of my work so far, I don't think my editing reflects my attitude and knowledge of policies very well right now. Of course, there's no shame in that-- it's not a race or anything! So, it might be awhile, but in about a year, when I have had a chance to make my reputation more apparent, and also decide if I think I am ready, I'd like to request an assessment from you. Please take care not to add {{stub}} to an article like Fred T. Sterling House which already has a specific stub tag (or two, in this case). Harpenden

I still think it would be helpful to change it to 'Harpenden, Hertfordshire'. As it makes minimal bad effects on anybody. Firstly, if you type Harpenden into Google, your result on maps is Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Even if there is only one Harpenden, this is the correct term to use. Also one who used social network sites such as Facebook needs to mark their current location as Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Just using Harpenden is too vague to tell where someone lives. Please take my advice, I understand what you are saying but with all respect, including the county, 'Hertfordshire', would also help.

how to add source information for edit to name

Dear I Jethrobot, Thanks for your note of explanation. The source for my info is Ani herself, who is a friend of mine. An online source could be to provide the contact information to her record company, which is http://www.righteousbabe.com/contact/index.asp But how do I add that to the edit I already made? Or do I have to undo that edit, and redo it and provide a source? I think Wikipedia needs to put better instructions in it's help section about how to do this, because I have already spent more than an hour trying to figure it out and could not. No, you don't need to undo and redo your edit. You can just edit the page as it currently is. Also, it looks like the source you pointed to doesn't list her full name, so you'll want to use one that does. Her record company might be able to be contacted, but the purpose of a reference is so that the information can be verified directly, rather than having to contact an institution or a person. When you do find one, you can put this citation next to her name using this syntax:
<ref>(url goes here without parentheses)</ref>

Act of Contrition

You asked for an explanation at the RfA. If you don't mind I will answer here rather than take up room at the RfA. I have 5 adult children and 13 grandchildren. When my second son was 10 years old, he carved his name into a bus stop bench. I saw it and asked if he had done it. He said he did. We went to the bus stop, waited for the next bus, and I had my son apologize to the driver for his act of vandalism. The driver was quiziczl and probably didnt have any idea what was going on. But...my son knew there would be consequences to his actions. I dont know what User:Sigma's act against Conservitopia was. He will not elaborate. But I get the impression that he didnt UN-do it. I would argue that a sincere expression of regret of one's poor judgment or an apology is never meaningless, but I can understand that this might not be sufficiently satisfactory for some, and that a clearer undoing of harm would be valuable. Meaningless in the sense that Wikipedia and its editors were not "the harmed", not the victim of his vandalism. So why apologize to us. He might as well go to Amazon.com and say he regrets his actions. They dont mean anything since they are directed at the wrong party. OK Jethro - here was my thinking. I'd seen posts by Sigma which left me with a distinct impression that they were quite young. Alone, that's not a bad thing - and indeed we have several fantastic admins <25 who are far more capable than a few of the over 40 group. (Kei, Julian C, JDelanoy, PeterS, AnonDis come to mind immediately - but I'm sure there are others). Here's the thing though - I was left with the impression that Sigma was impulsive, and when confronted, not adept at explaining his actions or even communicating at a level that admins. need to communicate at to be effective. I also felt that Sigma's intentions were good, and that they were here for the right reasons as far as editing goes - BUT being a good editor is a far cry from being a good admin. If someone is vandalizing (at worst), or disrupting (at best) a website - (Conservapedia in this case) - of if they are ummmm ... engaged in horseplay (joke oppose at RfA, April 1 OTT items, and "look I can make an Alt+Numberpad sig" type of actions .. then the maturity level isn't what's needed for Wikipedia (IMHO). It was different back in 2004 - 2007, when "Wikipedia" was not as "mainstream" and high-profile as it is today. It actually was /not/ a big deal back then .. but today it is. I had no desire to point fingers, find fault, or pile-on Oppose him, but I did want to register my view that I didn't think it was a good choice to grant him the "admin" buttons at this time. (I'll also note that I didn't even use my "admin" account to register my "oppose", as I didn't want to to be taken as some sort of "super-vote") - but I most assuredly did not think that they were ready for the responsibility that goes with the buttons. A couple years from now might be a whole different story - but at this point in time, I'm sorry - I didn't think it was a good idea. If you have further questions, by all means feel free to drop by my talk and ask - I'll do my best to explain my thinking to any-and-every-one's satisfaction. I'll be responding here to keep the thread all in one place. I think you've explained yourself well enough, and not only do I appreciate it, but I generally agree with your assessment.
A couple of disagreements: I think it is unfair to call Sigma's signature an example of "horseplay" in that it has no appreciable value in terms of judging maturity levels in itself. I also think, that while it is a nice gesture to contribute to RfAs as your not-admin self, I think most alternative accounts from non-admins are still readily identified by many (but not all) editors as their admin counterparts (like yours-- I certainly did). So, if there is any influence of admin opinion (which there may or may not be), I think the account you contribute with doesn't matter a great deal, because you would be recognized as an admin either way. I also question the whole "wait a couple of years" argument, because 1) It's an arbitrary amount of time, and 2) There's no clear understanding for sigma or the supporters of what is supposed to happen during that time that is supposed to remedy the concerns addressed at the RfA.
That said, I still acknowledge your concerns about Sigma in terms of explaining their actions, and communicating at a level that is expected for admins, and (perhaps) maturity levels. Well I certainly would not have opposed, and perhaps would have even supported if the Username/sig. were the only issue. I prefer things I can type easily from an "English" keyboard - but it's hardly bright-line or me either. Delta/Betacommand would be a good example of a user I thought well of who chose an alt+num name. I do understand there's a certain "pride" in knowing the little ins and outs of things like that - as well as perhaps being proud of some fraternity ~ either way, a very minor issue in my mind. I can always copy/paste or look-up the key combination for important things, and especially when one is not troubled by another user simply typing out "Sigma" - it becomes moot.
The "admin" posts being regarded as somehow superior to a non-admin post is likely a conversation that could go on a bit, but no real need. Personally I place my weight on the person rather than the rank - but I suspect there are others (for multiple reasons) that attribute more weight to some perceived status. In fact, I don't even have the admin. highlighter active on this account. :)
I also agree that my choice of words "couple of years" was arbitrary. If another RfA comes around in X months, I'll re-evaluate from scratch at that time. Sometimes there's an amazing increase in clue in a short time - so we'll see.

Hi Jethro

First, thank you so much for getting back to me. I'm really floundering with this and knowing that you're there is great. I'm in the process of getting a Web Site. As of yet, I don't have a URL. I don't understand why my current article isn't coming up for review though. I'm 63 and a year ago was computer illiterate, not an apology, just a fact. I had to call a friend and ask what a URL is. Ok, there you have it, that's the level of technical knowledge I have. I'm trying to get on Widipedia because I'm committed to a peer review process which demands greater accountability, more than blogging or facebook. If you're able to help me terrific. Ok, how much do you need to know to believe that I've been researching appetites/moods with relationship to food for over 30 years so,indeed, the profile that WHO developed for addictions fits exactly when describing food/eating. I'm confident of this since I've been working with patients for all this time. Another factor is, I've kept off over 70 pounds since 1980 with the method I've been developing. I'm wondering, if Wikipedia is the correct venue for me. I have research data for over 3 decades from the clinical application of classical and operant principles and have outcome data. Unfortunately, since it's based on "fee-for-service", publication in journels will be unlikely.
Jethro, my book proposal was given a green light from a top agent in NY. Unfortunately, I have no platform. Agents want to see so many hits on facebook, tweeting, blogging to assure that when I go for book signings, the store is filled to the hilt. I wanted to launch through Wikipedia to maintian some component of integrity. Unfortunately, even reference to my 1991 Doctoral Dissertation was seen as self-promotion. Lap-bands are popping out of peoples stomachs. In the last decade, I've been getting gastric-bypass patients. First, they're learning how to binge so they're gaining all their weight back, also,because Calcium an Vitamin D is not being absorbed, bones are beginning to be pitted. Throid's compromised, they're left with a severly compromised autoimmune system. This is what the medical model has contributed to obesity/overweight. ENOUGH!!!
There is no self-promotion here. I have a mission to save lives, if it's done anonymously so be it. I'm wondering if another venue might be more appropriate to support my passion and need for a platform. You have, indeed, answered your own question. In the spirit of good faith, you may want to check out one of one of these alternative outlets for your work. I think another important point is that on Wikipedia, a consensus of editors have agreed that Wikipedia is not the place to tell folks about your personal mission, even if it is a noble one (and I believe yours certainly is one of them, and am glad you spend your time this way). This is not really saying that your cause is unimportant, but that an online encyclopedia should not be a vehicle to make your cause more visible (which is a kind of promotion, just not for the sake of profit). You have no idea how you've helped me. Yes, I'll check out the other sites. You're absoultely correct about the limitations of what I can offer to Wiki and, what this site can accomplish for me. Intuitively this was obvious, it just wasn't clear as to why. You've answered that. Thanks for moving me in a direction that will better get my message out. I'm not savvy to the rules and regulations of how all this technologu works so, since my Wedb page isn't available yet, is it ok for me to give you my blod site? If not, I completely understand. It would be unfortunate to compromise the work you're doing for Wikipedia. A frustrated new editor

I hope this new editor heeds our call to slow down and to educate her(?) self in the comings and goings here. I empathize with new editors that have the drive to start with a BIG project. I had the same experience when I started years ago. It didn't get anywhere but I look back and realize all the individual exploring and learning that I did to get it "right". Alot of "How did they create that.."? kind of stuff. And then replicating what I found on the "edit" page. Your outreach to her was right on time especially the reminder that we are ALL volunteers. A kitten for your help!

Thank you for your response. My class as a whole is working on Wikipedia, and I was responding in regards to several of our experiences. The Red Pen of Doom, has been actively blocking our changes for the past two weeks. We admire how hard people work to keep Wikipedia accurate, but there are some grammatical changes that should be kept. I can tell you that after this assignment, very few of us will continue to try to edit Wikipedia because of the negative responses from the "WikiSheriffs" as we call them.
