Khalistan[edit]

The article about Khalistan, apart from being nowhere near NPOV, is quite well written. I like that ref style... but when refering to a book use the ISBN number syntax... check out the help pages...

INCOTW[edit]

Hi, just dropped in to say that it was great work by you on INCOTW this week on Maruti Udyog. You, hydkat and Ganeshk have improved the article a lot. Keep up the good work!! --Gurubrahma 13:47, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvios[edit]

Hi, thanks for bringing this to my notice. I saw his edits on "Vijayanagara Empire" but did not realise that it was a copyvio. I have removed that section completely as it could not be reverted to earlier version without disturbing the work done by others. You have done the right thing on "Vikramaditya VI" as well - however, the second step of reporting it on the link given in the copyvio notice hasn't been done and I have done it for you this time. I have also left a note on his talkpage - hope it helps. --Gurubrahma 10:45, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the stub - oh, it was ok. And, let us collect more info to create a good page. --Bhadani 14:25, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vikramaditya VI[edit]

There was no copyright violation on this page. I had explicitly given reference name and its author as "History of Karnataka" - By Mr. Arthikaje. The link you have quoted "www.ourkarnataka.com/states/history/historyofkarnataka23.htm" is the same as the one I have quoted. Please look carefully. Please put the deleted material/page back.

Dinesh Kannambadi

Hi, with reference to the above, I have replied again on his talkpage. btw, for Vikramaditya VI, it appears that you have not blanked the content. Whenever you tag an article as a copyvio, the content should be blanked. I have done it in this case. --Gurubrahma 05:36, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rename[edit]

I've now renamed you. Best wishes, Warofdreams talk 01:50, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Useful references for Karnataka history[edit]

1. Mr Arthikaje i believe is associated with Archelogical Survey Of India in someway.Anyone doubting Mr. Arthikaje's material should refer to "Indian inscriptions" web page and you will see the names of historians he quotes. These historians work for Archelogical Surevy of India. Seems like OurKarnataka.Com,Inc is an incorporation who work much like we do, ie; collect info from reliable sources. I have written to them asking them who Mr. Arthikaje really is. Hopefully they will respond soon. Under any circumstance, if we try to doubt just about every one who provides info on Indian history, I dont think too much information would be available on indian history, given the convoluted nature of Indian polity and its constant manupalation of history. Dont get too suspicious about my content. you must go the wiki pages for Cholas/Marathas for example and you will see what kind crap they write, without references.

2. Dr. Mrs Jyotsna Kamat (my favorite reference) is a leading authority on Karnataka/Kannada history and winner of "Kannada Rajyotsava" award. She has written sevral books along with her late husband. Her late husband, Krishnanand Kamat is a famous historian/journalist who apprently won the Padma Vibhushan for his 50 year endearing work.

Here are some awards won by Dr. Mrs. Kamat. Karnataka Literary Academy Award 1988

(for the book Karnatakada Shikshana Parampare) Rajyotsava Award 1991 (for extraordinary contribution to Kannada language and literature through electronic media)

Best Kannada Woman Writer of 1995-96 and the K. Shamarao scholarship award.

A.S. Krishna Rao memorial grant and scholarship by Mumbai Karnataka Foundation, 1998

Vidooshi honor for non-creative Scholarship, 2001

Rev. Kittel Award for Research in Kannada Literature, 2001

Honorary President of Karnataka History Congress (2001)

The web page to learn more on Kamats, go to http://www.kamat.com/krishna/

I prefer not to rely on other small time articles i see every now and then. 3. www.templenet.com gives good insight into temples of Karnataka as well as of other regions.

Great![edit]

I like your new name but it took some time to figure who it was ;) especially because you wanted to change it to AVNP. I see that Dinesh has responded above and I hope that the matter is resolved. However, please inform him that quoting anyone in the beginning of the article is bad form. Also, quoting some one by name doesn't help unless his affiliation is also mentioned. You may want to inform him that if he is related to Arthikaje his edits could potentially violate WP:AUTO. I think Dinesh is new to WP processes and hence we must give him some space. He seems to have finally come round to my explanation about copyrights and GFDL. --Gurubrahma 15:51, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how you determined that it was his previous avatar, but if it is the case, it's Ok, let's keep a watch. Thanks again for the info. --Gurubrahma 09:01, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Abdul_Hamid.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Abdul_Hamid.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

my references[edit]

When i mentioned Kamats and Arthikaje, I did not say they are my only sources. I have contributed quite a bit from sources like articles by historians and columnists. Just did not want to go into every detail. You will see this on other wiki pages like "kannada", "karnataka" , "Bangalore", "south India", "India monarchs" etc. It was i who brought about proof that the first inscription (890AD) with the name "begaluru" on it recorded by a historian in 1914 AD and that the Inscription is in "old Kannada" (just as an example), when a war was going on between telugu and Kannada guys about the origin of the name of my city.So please dont patronize me. The reason I like to Quote the Kamats and the Arthikaje is because i felt it adds credibility to the source, thats all. But I am learning. Thanks for your advice.

Hello, IndianCow. About the image of Kapil Dev which you just uploaded: (1) You need to supply a source, saying where the image came from. This allows other people to check the licensing conditions; (2) You need to supply a fair use justification. You can't just say "This is fair use", you have to say why it qualifies.

Thanks very much, Stephen Turner (Talk) 12:57, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Bagalkotmap.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. SteinbDJ 18:48, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am wishing you a happy Holi, the unique Hindu celebration of color and brotherhood among all members of the humanity. The festival falls on 15th March 2006. I have collected A Gift Pack of Quotations for you contained in the sections Do things Differently & Something More , which are part of the on-going discussion pertaining to my nomination of Idleguy for adminship. You are aware of the tradition that if you throw colored water on flames of burning Holika, you enable a Prahlad to emerge from the flames!!! I again convey Holi greetings to you and your family!!! --Bhadani 15:06, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The template Template:PD-IndiaGov was deleted presumably because Indian government works are not actually in the public domain. Then User:Splash marked the image as lacking copyright information. Later Orphanbot removed the image from the article. You then added a fair use claim to the image but did not re-add the image to the article. All fair use images must be used in articles, so another bot User:Roomba marked the fair use image as needing to be deleted. As it now stands the image is fine and will not effected by any more bots. --Martyman-(talk) 21:20, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Fair Use" images in user namespace[edit]

I noticed that you have a gallery of the images you have uploaded to Commons and listed as fair use. Please remember that fair use generally only applies to images that are used within the encyclopedia—that is, to illustrate specific topics. Having this gallery is, while fun to look at (you've uploaded some great pictures!), not covered under fair use and therefore almost certainly in violation of US copyright law. If you have any questions about whether the use of a particular image in the user (or main) namespace is legal under fair use, consult WP:Fair Use or respond to this comment. (I've put your page on my watch list, so I'll see it.) Thanks much Seqsea (talk) 04:21, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand about your frustration... copyright is tricky business, and especially here on WP can get seem to get in the way of honest people not trying to cause damage. The important thing to remember is that while fair use is a nice "exception" to the copyright law, it is not blanket permission to include any image we want, anywhere we want. • Read in Nichalp's page that you are planning to take pics of Bombay. If possible, can you get a few pictures of Brabourne, Wankhede and Bombay Gymkhana. tia, Tintin (talk) 09:14, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please turn the fair use images on this page (I understand you used to use that username) into a list of links or something like that as soon as possible. Wikipedia policy doesn't allow fair use images to be displayed in userspace (see Wikipedia:Fair use#Policy), and acording to this report you have 56 of them on that page (if you have fair use images on other userspace pages please fix those too). Thanks in advance. --Sherool (talk) 20:05, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2[edit]

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3[edit]

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.
