Hello everyone and welcome to the 18th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter:

Updated scripts Twinkle has made a number of improvements, including using a change tag to identify actions made with it and automatically filing edit requests for protected XfD nominations.
SD0001's shortdescs-in-category is now compatible with scripts modifying category listings, such as Equazcion's CatListMainTalkLinks
GhostInTheMachine's TalkHelper2 is a newer version of their prior script, TalkHelper
GeneralNotability's spihelper updated to 2.2.10, fixing a number of small bugs, automatically tagging globally locked socks as such in the sockpuppet template, and restoring open cases following an SPI history merge.
Enterprisey's script-installer gadget has been updated with more internationalization of messages, as well as addition of a user preference, window.scriptInstallerInstallTarget to allow controlling where new scripts are to be installed.

teahouse post - new article

Thanks for your reply in teahouse. I am really new and could use some help in providing sources so that someone with experience can develop a new article on the Arch of Healing and Reconciliation in Bellingham, WA, installed in 2018. Because I was involved in this project and also have no experience with wikipedia, I don't think I should write the article. What do you suggest? Paul Pengles (talk) 20:46, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi there Pengles, and thank you for wanting to contribute to Wikipedia, it's people like you that allow this project to thrive. Since you have disclosed that you have a conflict of interest with the topic subject for the article you wish to create, I recommend also disclosing it on your userpage. A Wikipedia article about yourself, a friend or company is not necessarily a good thing, as the tone of it may sound promotional and contain puffery. However, if you really want to continue, these are the next steps:
Articles generally require significant coverage
in reliable sources
that are independent of the topic.
After a quick Google search, I can't find any sources that seem to meet the criteria above, so I don't think the article is notable enough for an article. I generally suggest against creating an article, until the arch meets the criteria above. Berrely - Most of the sources that I listed above seem reliable and independent. How significant is a matter of opinion, I suppose. Because this monument is quite unique and addresses historical events and issues that are national and international in scope and importance, I see this and the sources as significant. Berrely - I posted this in the "talk" for the A.K. Mozumdar article because I am not seeing a way to edit the spelling of his first name or to provide information about the conflicts. There are also conflicts about the year of his birth which I did edit. What do you suggest?:

There are conflicting records regarding the spelling of his name. He signed most official documents as Akhoy Kumar Mozumdar, rather than "Akhay." I have copies of his signed immigration documents and draft registration for WWI and WWII. I believe that this entry should use "Akhoy" for his name. Also I think there shoiuld be a note about conflicting accounts of his birth year. On official documents he gave July 15, 1881 as his birth, but later in life he seems to have fabricated the year, probably because his teaching and beliefs were that his spiritual practice could postpone aging. In later years he gave 1864 as his birth year, which is what is listed in his obituary and headstone plaque. How should this be discussed? I can provide the documents. I edited the article to show 1881 as his birth, but I did not indicate the conflicts. - Paul Pengles (talk) 19:34, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Pengles, apologies for getting back late, I had some a personal issue I had to take care of. I have decided to review some of the sources you provided, as it would take way too long to review them all.

  • The Seattle Times, Belling History and The Aerogram are not in significant coverage.
  • The Bellingham Herald seems to be reliable, so it could be used as a source for an article.
  • The "Whatcom County Bar Journal" is effectively meeting minutes from a local community group, so it likely wouldn't be reliable.
  • The AS Review is a student published magazine, so it likely isn't reliable.
  • The Medium and YouTube links are self-published. So they are not independently published nor reliable sources.
  • The articles from the South Asian Post, Northwest Published Broadcasting and Cascadia Weekly all appear to mirror each other and contain pretty much the exact same information, so it would be likely more useful to use only one of them.
  • As the organisations you linked to seem to be all involved in the Arch in someway, their sources should avoid being used as they are primary.

Whilst I appreciate that you spent a while collecting these sources, it would've likely been more efficient than reference bombing with mostly low-quality sources, and instead, it would've helped you and I if you'd tried to find some more reliable ones. I also think you've misunderstood what I mean by "significant". On Wikipedia, a source in significant coverage (see WP:SIGCOV):

"Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material.

As for your most recent question, if you can find independent, reliable source to backup your claims, then you can be bold and change the info yourself. I hope this helps. — Yours, Berrely • Talk∕Contribs 16:16, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Berrely - Thanks. Regarding the question about editing the Mozumdar article, the reliable sources I found are scans of government documents/microfilm that have been made available on genealogy sites such as familysearch.com, so I am not sure how to cite them. Also, as to conflicting sources pertaining to spelling of his name, there does not seem to be a way to edit the very first part of the article that includes his name. Is there any guidance for Wikipedia about dealing with conflicting reliable sources? I found the preponderance of evidence was that he was born in 1881 and edited his DOB as 7/15/1881, but some later sources give his DOB as 7/15/1864. How should these conflicts about name and DOB be indicated? In a footnote? Do you know of any examples? Thanks, Paul Pengles (talk) 18:15, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Berrely - The documents that I accessed through Familysearch are government documents from the microfilms. They are from U.S. government microfilm collections and were not generated by users. Draft article

Dear Berrely, Thank you for reviewing my article about Hanley High School. As I live in Wiltshire, and because of the corona virus restrictions preventing travelling, I have written to the Stoke-on-Trent Education Authority, and separately to the City Library Archive, asking for information that I can use for citations within my article. The two bodies have responded positively and are currently progressing my requests. However, I would imagine that their archives on historical educational institutions will still be in paper format and not digitised, which may still be a problem in providing you with acceptable citations. If you believe this may still be case then can I suggest that, if you provide me with references to the specific areas of text that are of concern, I can look at redrafting them or deleting them. Hi there, and sorry for getting back late. Notability, and verifability are two separate things. However, the article does have problems with both matters.
Verifability
  • None of the information about the headteachers are cited (§ Headteachers).
  • There is only 1 source for the entire "Hanley Municipal Secondary School" section.
Some other concerns are:
  • The section about "Extracts from the school log book" is not really needed. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not an indiscriminate collection of information.
  • The prose seems to read more like a story.
  • The images are almost definitely copyright violations
Notability
  • Schools fall under the notability guideline WP:NCORP, specifically section WP:NSCHOOL. It states that schools must either satisfy WP:ORG, general notability guideline, or both. The draft article does not seem to pass the requirements of NCORP, as it has not been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.

Joseph Joachim removed edit

Hello, I recently made an edit to Joseph Joachim's biography page about him premiering Brahms' violin concerto. I was surprised this detail did not make it onto his page, so I added it, but it was removed by you for being "original research" and not having a "reliable, published source." Wikipedia's own page on the Brahms violin concerto lists this fact in the "Premiere" part of the article: "The work was premiered in Leipzig on January 1, 1879, by Joachim..." The fact that Joachim premiered the concerto is also found here on Britannica, and here on the San Francisco Symphony's webpage about the piece. I would appreciate if my edit was reinstated. Welcome to the sixteenth newsletter from the Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

Growth features show impact

Newcomer task experiments results

The team recently published our analysis of the impact of newcomer tasks. We are happy to announce that we found that the Growth features, and particularly newcomer tasks, lead to increased editing from newcomers.

In November 2019, the Growth team added the "newcomer tasks" feature to the newcomer homepage. After six months, we collected data from Arabic, Vietnamese, Czech, and Korean Wikipedias. We analyzed the overall impact of the Growth features, including newcomer tasks.

This analysis finds that the Growth features lead to increases in:

  • the probability that newcomers make their first article edit (+11.6%)
  • the probability that they are retained as editors
  • the number of edits they make during their first couple of weeks on the wiki (+22%)

We also find that the quality of their edits, as measured by revert rate, is comparable to that of a control group.

  • The number of suggested edits completed by each wiki each week, going from December 2019 to November 2020, with a line for the total.

  • The number of distinct users completing suggested edits by each wiki each week, going from December 2019 to November 2020.

General metrics

As of November 2020, across all wikis where the features have been deployed:

  • more than 5,000 newcomers have made more than 40,000 edits using Newcomer tasks.
  • more than 14,000 questions have been sent to volunteer mentors by more than 11,000 users.
  • more than 2,000 questions have been asked on help desks by more than 1,500 users.

Variants C and D

Variants C and D are two new arrangements of the newcomer homepage. We deployed them in October. After six weeks of these variants being deployed, we can see that they have led to increased interactions with newcomer tasks. Next, we will determine which variant is best and use that for all newcomers.

News for mentors

A separate list for workshops hosts

During workshops organized by education programs through the communities, workshops hosts like to mentor people they train on wiki. Several wikis requested to have a way to claim their mentees without having other newcomers being randomly being assigned to them. To address this need, a separate list can be created on wiki, for mentors that wish to claim mentees, but prefer not to have random mentees being assigned to them. Learn more about this feature.

Claiming multiple mentees at once

Mentors can use Special:ClaimMentee to claim a newcomer as their mentee. The feature now allows mentors to claim multiple newcomers at once.

Community news

The help panel allows people to post a message to the local help desk while editing. Previously, the tool always posted messages to the bottom of help desks. Wikis are now able to configure it to display new messages at the top of the help desk page. T261714

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Cite Unseen update

Hello! Thank you for using Cite Unseen. The script recently received a significant update, detailed below.

  • You can now toggle which icons you do or don't want to see. See the configuration section for details. All icons are enabled by default except for the new Green checkmark generally reliable icon (described below).
  • New categorizations/icons:
    • Megaphone Advocacy: Organizations that are engaged in advocacy (anything from political to civil rights to lobbying). Note that an advocacy group can be reliable; this indicator simply serves to note when a source's primary purpose is to advocate for certain positions or policies, which is important to keep in mind when consuming a source.
    • Hand writing Editable: Sites that are editable by the public, such as wikis (Wikipedia, Fandom) or some databases (IMDb, Discogs).
    • Red journal with an X Predatory journals: These sites charge publication fees to authors without checking articles for quality and legitimacy.
    • Perennial source categories: Cite Unseen will mark sources as Green checkmark generally reliable, Exlamation mark in orange triangle marginally reliable, No symbol generally unreliable, Stop hand deprecated, and Black X blacklisted. This is based on Wikipedia's perennial sources list, which reflects community consensus on frequently discussed sources. Sources that have multiple categorizations are marked as Blue question mark varied reliability. Note that Green checkmark generally reliable icons are disabled by default to reduce clutter, but you can enable them through your custom config. A special thanks to Newslinger, whose new Sourceror API provides the perennial sources list in a clean, structured format.
  • With the addition of the new categorizations, the biased source icon has been removed. This category was very broad, and repetitive to the new advocacy and perennial sources categorizations that are more informative.
