GAC backlog elimination drive[edit]

This form message is being sent to you either due to your membership with WikiProject Good Articles and/or your inclusion on the Wikipedia:Good article candidates/List of reviewers. A new drive has been started requesting that all members review at least one article (or more, if you wish!) within the next two weeks at GAC to help in removing the large backlog. This message is being sent to all members, and even members who have been recently reviewing articles. There are almost 130 members in this project and about 180 articles that currently need to be reviewed. If each member helps to review just one or two articles, the majority of the backlog will be cleared. Since the potential amount of reviewers may significantly increase, please make sure to add :{{GAReview}} underneath the article you are reviewing to ensure that only one person is reviewing each article. Additionally, the GA criteria may have been modified since your last review, so look over the criteria again to help you to determine if a candidate is GA-worthy. If you have any questions about this drive or the review process, leave a message on the GAC talk page. --Nehrams2020 00:39, 25 May 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Illinois Images[edit]

Hey guy, I just found this talk template for our picture pages. I think you need to start adding this, plus add it to the existing images you already have on the wikipedia. It is {{WikiProject Illinois}}, but for the "class" add it so it says |class=image, that way they are associated with the Illinois Project. As I find pics, I am going to start adding it. Plus, I am going to start adding to categories {{WikiProject Illinois}}, and for class=category after I have created a category.--Kranar drogin 02:04, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Basically just start adding these:
{{WikiProject Illinois|class=category}}
{{WikiProject Illinois|class=stub}}
{{WikiProject Illinois|class=image}}
{{WikiProject Illinois|class=list}}
{{WikiProject Illinois|class=template}}

NRHP advice and CHICOTW[edit]

I am a bit confused on whether you are a user who has changed his username because I do not see your name on our . Thanks for the advice. It is probably not only applicable to the NRHP articles, but also the Chicago Landmark articles regardless of whether they are NRHPs or not. I will take that advice as best I can.

I noticed on your User:IvoShandor/submissions/GA_reviews#Failed section that I account for 2 of your 3 persistent fails that were converted to pass. I will be shooting for a 3rd with Merle Reskin Theatre.

I passed out user boxes to those who had 5 edits or more on Chicago Theatre by the way. There is also another thank that I send for those who help WP:CHICOTW during the week. I don't see you having been on the list, however. Thanks for helping WP:WPChi at Chicago Theatre, nonetheless. We could use your opinion in a few places where consensus is helpful if you have an interest in Chicago related topics.:

  1. Voting for new Category:Top-importance Chicago articles
  2. Nominating new Top-importance candidates for promotion and demotion
  3. Nominating and voting on future CHICOTWs TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 20:55, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I notice you passed only 5 out of 24 articles. Do you know if there are statistics on pass rates because I have about a 50% rate and want to know how I compare to other nominators. If you are any guage, I may be doing pretty well. However, I have been having run-ins with a reviewer who thinks I am too liberal with my nominations. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 04:04, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I do concede that on average the Chicago articles are shorter in length than is probably the norm. I have had some very short GAs that I feel are as broad as necessary for a GA however. I hope to get higher than 50%. I think if I were to get so conservative that I had a 100% pass rate it would be a disservice in the sense that 1) I am not taking advantage of the system which with the onhold feature can help me improve borderline articles 2) not properly promoting enough decent work with the limited publicity a green plus sign can bring and 3) sometimes seeking GA for articles that should be seeking A or FA class ratings. I think optimally 80% which is the magic number in other WP approval processes might be good. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 04:32, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have not seen your Oak Park stuff because you hadn't linked anything for me. I have just posted my review record to the best of my recollection. If I have omitted anything that you are aware of, feel free to add it. Thanks for tagging the articles. Basically, if you put any of these categories on an article the bot will eventually tag them for us. Right now almost all Chicago and Cook County article plus statewide politicians are getting our tags. I am shooting for WP:FLC for Chicago Landmark. I am taking a shot at WP:GA along the way although the article is really formatted for a list. I have been told we need to get at least half the landmarks blue linked for WP:FLC. We are about 4 or 5 articles short so if you see anything you think you can do a good job with take a shot. I have been creating very basic stubs toward this end. In fact a whole week of the WP:CHICOTW was dedicated to it recently (Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chicago/COTW/History/CLstubification. By my record you can see that the Chicago article I am in most need of editorial assistance on is Paul Cornell (Chicago) (3 GA fails). However, my biggest disappointment is Blackstone Hotel. I am going to be working on it and Merle Reskin Theatre (formerly Blackstone Theatre). Help with either would be great. I don't know if you have crossed paths with User:Elkman, but he has gotten me up to speed on some basic NRHP tools (User_talk:TonyTheTiger#NRHP_resources). You may already be familiar with them. Thanks for the help with the Miller House and for adding your newest articles. I have made some page tweaks as have others as you may have already noticed. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 20:25, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I usually put the news info in the refs and only the book info in the bibliography section (like I did here) so I was confused on the New York Times refs, there fine though. The timeline thing is just because I was having a hrad time putting it together in my head, if the info doesn't exist that's fine. Looks great overall. Quadzilla99 13:06, 28 May 2007 (UTC) [reply]

I nominated my article Tompkins Square Park Police Riot for FA status[edit]

From the nomination page:
(self-nomination)This article is simply excellent. Excellent writing, interesting subject matter, improved during its Good Article trial, and eye-witnesses have left notes on the Talk page that talk about the article being so accurate, it's like they were living it all over again. Written in a NPOV and heavily cited with the highest of sources, it includes GFDL media, is wikified to the fullest, a fantastic "See Also" section, and looks at the story from every angle. --David Shankbone 18:21, 29 May 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Hey, just saw this on the bot. I was glad to see you starting to use that shell! I love that thing, it compacts it, but at the same time when you expand them it doesn't reveal every single project, just the one that is important to you. I also added in the ratings and inportance, so you may want to copy that so you have it for yourself. Remember, rate the dang buggars so I don't have to! haha, no worries if you don't.--Kranar drogin 01:20, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, when you use the shell. Make sure you capitalize the class or it shows up in lowercase. Minor, but just doesn't like right. Yes, I can be anal about some things!--Kranar drogin 21:37, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Illinois Image tagging[edit]

I think we are all done, here is the list Category:Image-Class WikiProject Illinois articles. Now, as I am looking at it, it appears that some of the images are going to have to be renamed I think. Also, I think there is some sort of mass tagging to move all the pictures over to Commons, but maybe you would know better than me? And if we did so, would we lose everything we have done already, named tagging and putting them into categories. I know I should send all the maps I have done over there, along with my images, just haven't gotten around to it.--Kranar drogin 11:00, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Monte Ne[edit]

Hello, I'm needing some info or support for an article about a place listed on the National Register of Historic Places that I've been working on. It's a place called Monte Ne which was a health resort of sorts run by an eccentric bimetallisms named William Coin Harvey in the early twentieth century. I've put a lot of time into the article and now I'm trying to get it featured, so if you wouldn't mind looking it over and giving me some criticism or support I would really appreciate. Also I've asked a few other users for there help and placed this exact same message on their discussion page. This was just so I wouldn't have to type it again, I'm not trying to spam your talk page. If you have any questions please feel free to leave me a message or email me. Thanks so much! --The_stuart 21:44, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DeKalb[edit]

Hey, your maintain article in the DeKalb category was red, so I removed for now, might want to fix that. Anyways, I have created this page Category:People from DeKalb, Illinois, since there were many that were from the city. I also removed the county cat from them, since it is basically a redundant category having it under the city (99% of articles, if it is in the city do not need a category for the county). Just wanted to keep you abreast since you are maintaining the page.--Kranar drogin 14:55, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Latest work[edit]

Thanks for your ongoing work on Cook County residential architecture. I have a few questions.

In George W. Smith House, the sentence beginning with "The other structure is the Unity Temple and the Smith House. . ." could be corrected a couple of ways with different meanings. I am not sure what change to make.

Also, I am not sure why there is no Category:Frank Lloyd Wright-Prairie School of Architecture Historic District if there is a Category:Ridgeland-Oak Park Historic District. However, I am not sure the latter is needed. I think they should both be included as articles which may include lists in tabular form. I don't really think either needs a category, IMO.

Good work. I was wondering why you hadn't taken a look at the architecture for Blackstone Hotel yet, but I can see you were hard at work. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 15:22, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AIC Building[edit]

Since you are an architecture guy, I want your opinion on whether important buildings should have separate articles from the institutions they may house. WP:CHICOTW did a good Chicago Board of Trade Building article. I am thinking the Art Institute of Chicago Building should have a separate article that talks about the sequential building additions leading up to the new modern wing and landscape architecture of the north and south gardens. What do you think? TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 18:45, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly the Chicago Board of Trade Building was long enough to warrant its own article. The way the WP:CHICOTW use to work Art Institute of Chicago Building would produce an article of about the same length in my estimation. However, recently, no one has gotten involved and it has been 90% my own work. I am not sure if by myself I can produce anything to rival the CBOT Building. I think I will attempt to dedicate a COTW to it however. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 16:37, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blackstone Hotel Architecture[edit]

You seem to me like an Architecture student. Would you mind driving for the architecture section. The difference between Second Empire and Beaux Arts is not something I am entirely familiar with. I appreciate the link, but I truly think it would be a disservice for me to try to detail the architectural nuances. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:38, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would also appreciate your opinion on what should be redlinks at Historic Michigan Boulevard District and what should just be black text in the buildings table architect column. I know Adler & Sullivan should have an article. I think George A. Fuller Company (who built many other Mich Ave buildings they did not design plus the Marquette Building should have a page). I don't know about the others. I imagine you might have an opinion. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 17:50, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship?[edit]

Remember me? It's June and February is a long time ago, especially considering your fine contributions. I noticed that Snowolf and Wizardman wanted to nominate you and now it's my turn. I think you'd do well. Of course if you don't want to run there's no pressure. So what do you say? James086Talk | Email 12:50, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think so. I'll notify Snowolf and Wizardman aswell (co-noms always look good). I'm going to write a nomination statement, have a look at the instructions and the guide, they're really useful. :)James086Talk | Email 12:58, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok then, I created a nomination page and have asked Snowolf and Wizardman to co-nom. You can answer the questions and put it up in your own time, though I would wait for those two to respond before posting it to WP:RFA. James086Talk | Email 13:38, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies, I have to go but at a glance they seem alright. I will reply tomorrow, but now I must be off. James086Talk | Email 14:15, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So, when are you going to transclude your RFA onto the main RFA page? I can't enter a supporting comment until you do so. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 19:54, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I went and added my co-nom.--Wizardman 22:57, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Although I agree that it doesn't look to be successful, I would let it run its course. There's still things we can learn from it, for example; you have received no opposition other than for the incident all the way back in Feb and almost 70% have supported nonetheless, which means you must be doing the right things. I don't think it will pass, but it may yet give an indication of when the community (or enough of them) is willing to grant you the tools. Don't be disheartened, in this case it was my error, I misjudged the time it takes for people to accept your one-off and many administrators take more than one RfA before passing. It's completely up to you, my opinion is that the RfA is not a snowball so I would leave it up. If you do withdraw there's no harm done. James086Talk | Email 00:10, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If it fails this time, it'll pass next. Daniel Bryant (not related to Daniel Brandt) even had to try a couple times before he became administrator. SakotGrimshine 01:59, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wish you every success despite those in opposition, Ivo...
There's just something unintentionally funny about someone saying that you have 'anger issues' and 'immaturity' and only using one incident as their main case. If all Admin were forced to subscribe to a doctrine of removing those two 'evils', surely there'd be no more Wikipedia Admin? -Kingpin1055 09:56, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to withdraw, just under where you "indicate acceptance of the nomination", state that you withdraw your nomination and strike out the "I accept" (see WP:GRFA#Closure). Though it's looking up now; 70% support, that means you're in the area where the bureaucrat makes a decision (not just counts the numbers as they would if it were 10% support or 95%). James086Talk | Email 05:46, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing like an RFA to remind you of past mistakes, huh? It sort of makes me afraid to submit an RFA (following up on a discussion I had with Snowolf last month), because I have a block log. We should just retitle the whole process Wikipedia:Nominations for sainthood instead. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 05:18, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Cold War history project is now active at the page above. John Carter 21:45, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Responding, or not[edit]

IvoShandor, you're being given a hard time at the RfA thing, by jerks like me. (I trust that NPA allows me to be rude about myself.) While I don't intend to retract what I said or to change my vote, I agree with at least some of the complaints that you've expressed, and I sympathize with some more of them too.

A tip, however: Think really, really hard before responding to any comment you don't like, particularly if it irritates or angers you. If something seems really unfair, get away from the keyboard for a time. When you later return to it, somebody else may have come to your defense, or you may have thought of a more effective way to respond. And sometimes the most effective response is no response at all: Silence definitely won't be taken as acquiescence, and your detractor will be seen stewing in his primness.

As for the -- sarcastic? but even if so I don't care -- speculation that people who sail through the RfA must have haloes, no, I don't think so. They just can't be bothered to present the diffs for their lapses. Or they can't even remember those lapses.

Relax. It's only a mop and bucket anyway. And as in a real (dead-trees) publishing organization, the editorial work is more fun than the janitorial. -- Hoary 15:35, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can I add that the only thing that stopped me supporting was the length of time since the incident. This is your chance to show that under provocation you can be cool and handle it maturely. Another couple of months and you will have as clean a record as any newbie presenting for RfA (they like a min of 6 months) so it then shouldn't count otherwise we are encouraging people to abandon accounts as soon as things get hairy. Your editing record is impressive and I'm sure just a couple of months more will do the trick. All the best. Sophia 16:01, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What Sophia said. And thanks for the message on my talk page. Remember that we don't all hate you really (actually I for one am slightly jealous, thinking of the times I've wanted to tell dickhead vandals what they should do with their various body parts). Be patient: you'll pull through this eventually. -- Hoary 16:07, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just remember what a wise man once said:
Whatever happens, happens.
Whatever, in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen.
Whatever, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again.
It doesn’t necessarily do it in chronological order, though.
In other words, whether it's now or later, you'll be an admin. Just remember, though, to never admit to your mistakes. Apparently that's a job requirement???
If it's votes that count, then you've got it, since it's about two-to-one in your favor. If it has to be unanimous, then I don't see how anyone becomes an admin.
Still, if you somehow don't get it now, that means more time to spend on da project. Just remember us little folks when you do achieve sainthood, doncha know. And don't forget to be practically perfect in every way. You know, like me. *heehee* -Ebyabe 16:33, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Douglas Adams from the beginning of Mostly Harmless, unless he also quoted someone. I'm sorry for the stress you must be under from this RfA. James086Talk | Email 00:07, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, you missed the perfect reference, and if you don't use it, I'm sure shameless enough to. That one night was like the long dark tea-time of the soul. Just remember, Ivo, don't panic. Re: NRIS query by architect[edit]

I've implemented a National Register database query by architect. It's at this link.

There are a few quirks with their listing of architects, though. The National Register database lists it by last name first, so instead of querying by Henry Hobson Richardson, it's listed as "Richardson,Henry Hobson". But, sometimes they aren't consistent, so some entries are listed as "Richardson,H.H.". To get around that, you can use a % sign as a wildcard (i.e. "Richardson%H"), or just query by last name. How the blazes would anyone being told to shut up because their opinion doesn't matter, and having their comments deleted, be offended? That really seems unlikely. Do not post on my user page again, or address me again. KP Botany 20:26, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I told you not to post on my user page. If you have no ill will, leave it alone. I don't appreciate having to clean up comments from people who tell me I'm over-reacting and have no right to be offended by what offends me. Do NOT post on my user page. For any reason. I will not read this, so don't bother replying.

Good job making the effort. I know you had no ill will. they are just being a bit uncivil now. Best to just drop it and move on., THanks again for making the effort, that is all you can do! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:32, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA review of Manzanar[edit]

Hi -- just wanted to give you a little nudge that Manzanar is getting a bit overdue on the hold -- you might want to go ahead and finish up. I'm sure you're distracted by the RfA; I actually noticed because someone asked me to point out some diffs of your good work, and I spotted it. Good luck on the RfA; it does look borderline, but I suggest trying again in three or four months if it fails. Thanks. Mike Christie (talk) 02:29, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CPW Historical District Photos[edit]

Hey IvoShandor, sorry it's taken two months, but I took about 100 photos today up and down CPW. I have to go out to a concert now, but when I get home I'll put them up on the Commons (which might take a while, but I'll let you know when I'm done). Not all of them are fantastic, as I had to work under a time limit, but I got a lot of good ones, and at least there's documentation for most. A lot of buildings were under scaffolding/renovation and I didn't bother -- it wouldn't have done justice to the article and the building itself. I'll let you know which ones specifically later, but just wanted to apologize for the delay. --Fbv65edel / ☑t / ☛c || 20:54, 12 June 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Your RfA - the aftermath[edit]

Sure... I meant what I said - I respect the fact that you had the balls to admit you screwed up at the time, and apologize. We need more admins who'll do that, rather than react defensively when they make a mistake. It's too bad that people somehow got the mistaken idea that someone else had uncovered the diffs, when you were upfront with them. You could have kept quiet, and you'd likely have passed, so being honest and upfront didn't help in this case. That's an unfortunate message. Anyhow, you did garner a lot of support, so if you keep up the good work and avoid any major problems, I think you'd be a shoo-in if you want to reapply in a couple of months. MastCell Talk 16:54, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You'll have my support next time as well. I'm not sure what advice to give about disclosing that "incident" from months back. It must be incredibly frustrating to have that in the history. I think that with a little more time you should be an easy pass, although there are probably some editors that will never let you live something like that down. I hope that you stay with and continue to enjoy Wikipedia! Gaff ταλκ 18:18, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the support, everybody. Besides finding it a bit frustrating I don't know if it will affect me overall. I have a hard time figuring out what caused that to go so badly, why such a rush to judge, why so many misperceptions. I cannot explain it myself. It seemed a bit harsh and out of line for what essentially amounts to (and as said so many times by the multitudes at RfA) a mop and bucket. I will go on editing, as for another attempt at adminship, not likely. IvoShandor 18:22, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry it failed man. I guess the best thing I could tell you is that you will be supported by me in the future if you're a candidate again. And I mean it. The answer I got from the Water Pump is yes. I specifically stated "If something is in commons, is it ok that we are tagging it here on the Wikipedia" I was told "that is perfectly fine". So, that is why I am doing it. I can freely say now that I have ALMOST totally cleaned up all of Category:People from Illinois. Let me tell you, that was a royal pain in the ass. There are a few branches beyond that that will need to be clean up, civil war and stuff, and ESPECIALLY Chicago. The reason I bring this up, is that I have been populating Category:Images of People from Illinois. That is coming along nicely. Well, just figured I would chime in a good explanation here. Sorry!--Kranar drogin 01:05, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review[edit]

Hi there IvoShandor

Just a quick note to ask something of you. When you start reviewing a good article candidate, please please please add under the entry on the GAC site that you are reviewing it! I settled down to start Manzanar myself, read it, wrote a few notes, looked at the discussion page and found your review buried on a subpage of your own userpage, 10 minutes wasted!

I'm sure it was a slip of memory, something I'm personally prone to more than most, but please just try to remember next time!

Thanks very much,

Chrisfow 14:50, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IvoShandor, I had removed the GAreview tag because it didn't appear you were actively working on it; I have now updated the GAC page to point to your partial review so other reviewers will see the work you've already done. If you want to finish it up, go ahead; or just leave it if you prefer as others should be able to pick up where you left off. Thanks. Mike Christie (talk) 15:16, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comments[edit]

Thanks for the comforting words. WRT, PR I have 5 items at WP:PR right now. You were a GA reviewer on Merle Reskin Theatre, you are involved in Blackstone Hotel, I already have gotten significant feedback on Paul Cornell (lawyer), Chris Young (baseball pitcher) is outside the Chicago domain. This leaves Chicago Board of Trade Building in need of a peer review. Help and direction would be appreciated on that. CDP vs Unincorporated[edit]

Ok, I have just noted in Category:Settlements in Illinois we have two different designations which I THINK mean the same things. Category:Census-designated places in Illinois and Category:Unincorporated communities in Illinois are for the most part the same thing. Do you agree on this, or are they different? If they are the same, which should we keep and which should we get rid of? I'm going to cross post this.--Kranar drogin 10:48, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, speaking of Unincorporated. I see a few from your home area need to be created. You don't have to add them to the list, since I am working on a BIG list right now of all the counties (you should see the number from Cook County alone). But those from DeKalb that need creation are as follows:
- Clare
- Esmond
- Fairdale
- Herbert
- McGirr
- Valley View
You may want to just stub them out by modeling them after Egan, Illinois, but that is up to you. Heck, if you don't want to stub out those six, I will get to them once I get this list set up eventually. Maybe I can get everyone to do a few from their home areas...hmm.--Kranar drogin 03:31, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We are going to go with Unincorporated, it just sounds better. Esmond map, that is going to be gotten rid of once I get to the "E"s. I am in the process of changing over all the UCs to the geobox, and have started with the As and Bs so far. See List of unincorporated communities in Illinois to keep track of what I am doing. First step, get the list made. Second step, add the UCs to the county pages and their templates, third step, stub all of them out. There is only over 900, so this should keep me busy for a bit.--Kranar drogin 21:01, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
