The Tea Leaf - Issue Seven (special Birthday recap)

It's been a full year since the Teahouse opened, and as we're reflecting on what's been accomplished, we wanted to celebrate with you.

Last month January was our most active month so far! 78 profiles were created, 46 active hosts answered 263 questions, and 11 new hosts joined the project.

Neurobiology

Hi Jami. Thanks for volunteering to pitch in and help with the Marquette Uni Neurobiology course. You couldn't have arrived at a better time; the students are expected to be at a "go-live" stage with their work by the end of this week, so I'm (optimistically!) expecting a flurry of activity any... minute... now...

I've listed the students' draft pages here; as you can see, there's still a fair bit of work to be done on them. Because they fall under the requirements of WP:MEDRS, I've also got User:Biosthmors involved as a sort of "unofficial" OA, since he's got a lot of experience with medical sourcing; you might want to drop him a line if you encounter any students who are having trouble with the WP:MED side of things.

Michelle, the course professor, is pretty on-the-ball and is offering her students good classroom support. I haven't heard from her this week so will be dropping her a line in the next day or two - if you like, I'll copy you into our correspondence.

Embattled Media: Media of Somalia

Hi there! As part of our Embattled Media class, we were assigned a group project of editing the article Media of Somalia. We added a new section to the article on Press Freedom and some additional information to the different kinds of media. Unfortunately, our contribution on Press Freedom has been removed by another contributor and, despite having posted on their talk page, we still don't know why the information was removed. Ball State Project--Article "Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company" moved into Wikispace

Hi Jami, Just thought I'd alert you that I've moved the above article into the main area to complete their work in the project for now. The article doesn't show up in searches yet so I can't add the course banner to the talk page. Is there a waiting period before new articles are available, for editors to check on them? Sandbox concern

Unable to move article out of sandbox

Hi Jami, Both mdillman and I have been unable to move her article "Domestic violence in Chile" out of the sandbox. Lost/missing article links from course page

Hi Jami: Thank you for your earlier help, which I did not acknowledge. It is the weekend again and we have a new (real) problem this time. On the course page several of the articles created by my students this semester no longer have functioning links. They were functioning earlier, now broken. The trouble is that students are supposed to write peer reviews by this evening and are unable to access the articles. I will alert them and ask them to go via the user contributions pages, but I hope you fix the links. I just posted this message on Nikkimaria's talk page. I hope one of you can fix the broken links. The time zone on Wikipedia edits

A very small question, but important for judging timeliness of my students' peer reviews ;). Is the time reflected on the edits/talk page posts the GMT? (so, 5 hours ahead of EDT?) Thanks. BerikG (talk) 21:15, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

@Ric.chi: Wow; looks like you guys expanded the article pretty significantly. Great job, and I'm glad to see you used so many in-line citations! Some editors may come in and cut some of the detailed sections down, like her first job, as it may not necessarily have much to do with the reason she's notable as an article on Wikipedia. Other than that, it looks to me like a pretty great expansion. Formatting-wise, you may want to add some wikilinks to more content from the article, just for terms that may require further reading. I'd also suggest you break down that first section, as it's quite long in its current state. I also checked to see which pages link to the article, and it's fairly sparse regarding pages in the article namespace (real Wikipedia entries). Can you think of any other relevant pages on Wikipedia that should have a wikilink to her article? That will help incorporate it more so more readers can find out more about her when browsing related articles. These are just tiny comments, since it seems generally like you've followed the most basic policies/principles of contributing to Wikipedia. Great job; hope this helps! COMM 3460: Pocahontas (1995 Film)

Hello! My name is Shelby and I am working with User:Sarahpeters93 and User:Easowers to improve the page on Disney's 1995 Pocahontas film. We are editing this page as part of an assignment for Cornell University/Online Communities (Fall 2013) Wikipedia Education program. We wanted to put some more media on the page, as well as validate the media that is already there. The talk page of Pocahontas mentions that the fair use explanation of the existing photos is missing. How can we make sure that the images are fair use as well as add some new ones? We have explored the Wikimedia Commons but cannot find any photos relating to the movie, only photos relating to the history figure Pocahontas. Any suggestions/tips? Thanks! Online Communities Class @ Cornell University, ambassador

We're from Cornell's Online Communities class, and you're our ambassador. We wanted to reach out to you and ask you a brief question.

On our talk page for Peter Pan, user Stelmaris recommended us to use British English when editing the article. We don't have any experience with British English. Do you have any guidelines or suggestions?

@Hek34: The editor is correct in suggesting British English is typically used when writing about British topics. However, all dialects of English are accepted on ENWP (English Wikipedia), so I think it's ok if you use your particular dialect. Someone else may come along and change some spellings. This page in the Wikipedia Manual of Style may also give you some tips on some differences between American and British spellings. Hope that helps! How can I do it? Education_Program:Washington_University_in_St._Louis/Behavioral_Ecology_(Fall_2013)

Hi Jami, I just wanted to drop you a quick note about some concerns at the WT:GAN about work coming in from Education_Program:Washington_University_in_St._Louis/Behavioral_Ecology_(Fall_2013). This class of 57 seems to be assigned to nominate 1-3 articles apiece for GA, in some cases without having first worked on them; while I realize this is well-meaning, and it'd be great if some of these submissions did turn into GAs, the practical result is that we're getting flooded with low-quality submissions, most of which we're quickfailing.

I've already reached out to the professor, who agreed to take some sort of action on her end, but you're listed on the course page as its online volunteer, so I thought I'd bring you into the loop also. Is it possible to institute some sort of quality control on their end first (checking by the professor, the TAs, or you and other online volunteers) rather than the submissions coming straight from students to us? It seems unlikely that many of these will be close to ready to pass without someone helping the students on their end, particularly since they seem to all be making multiple submissions. As a former prof myself, I love to see student work coming through GA (and have personally promoted a few), but it seems from my end like it's most effective when a class nominates its best works after careful revision, rather than the whole kit 'n' kaboodle.

Anyway, thanks for all your work as an online volunteer. While I'm skeptical of whether this class is likely to pass the 50-150 GAs they plan to nominate, it does look like a lot of good content has been added, so that's a big win. Cheers, -- Khazar2 (talk) 03:26, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

@Khazar2: Thanks for notifying me! I'm glad to hear Dr. Strassmann has responded to your concern. One great thing about her style of teaching with Wikipedia is that she's one of the few professors (that I know of) who actually reads each word the students submit to check for accuracy, at least from the point of view of her expertise. I believe that step may actually come once the semester is over, since it's quite a time sink. I think it makes sense that she can't do that before they nominate for GA (since they'll exit the class and may not respond to GA revision suggestions), but I totally understand that some of the articles are likely unsuited for GA and, thus, overwhelm you guys over there. Dr. Strassmann had a lot of success doing her assignment this way last year, but she does have almost 3x the students right now, so this is a great indication that we may need to rethink the GA aspect, since it's a bit too much to handle. For what it's worth, I know the reason they submitted this early (in the semester...there are still a few more weeks) is because Dr. Strassmann wanted them to have ample time to review any suggestions and make necessary edits. I think that's a great assignment for producing work that makes a really big impact, but do you think it's simply too time-consuming for the GA reviewers?

Do you have any other suggestions for a way for them to get specific feedback that they can fix in their articles? The students do a peer review, and the professor does an "accuracy check" (as I mentioned), but she also wants them to incorporate their work into the format, style, policies, etc. of Wikipedia. I don't want to overwhelm the existing and functioning infrastructure, but I am elated that she is committed to making sure the students' work fits in well with the encyclopedia. Ok, now I'm rambling. Any thoughts or suggestions on ways to do this without being a burden to other volunteers? I don't want to generalize too much, but I feel like at least this approach is an unreasonable burden on GA reviewers. My experience is that student nominations at GA are most successful when the students are working in groups rather than individually, work on no more than one article per group, and the instructor is involved in giving feedback before the nomination rather than after. We had a class like that this summer that got 3 of their 4 articles passed, which is at or above the standard GA pass rate. I passed one of them and thought it was great.

On the other hand, I've had to fail something like 30-40 GA nominations from individual students in my time as a GA reviewer, and I don't think I've ever passed one. The nominations are rarely good quality to begin with, and even if you make detailed suggestions for revision, the students never return to the process after the course is done. There are complaints constantly at GA and DYK about student work being dropped on us; it's a huge demand on volunteer time for very meager results.

To answer your broader question, if it's not possible for the professor and TAs to give specific feedback to these students on their articles, could online course volunteers like yourself do it? I don't mean to dump this work on you personally, just as you didn't mean to dump that same work on us, but it seems like it would be better to ask Wikipedians specifically interested in mentoring students to donate the extra hours. In this particular case, would you and other online course ambassadors) be willing to do at least some of the GA reviews this course is requesting? If you'd be willing to split it with the GA regulars working in this area, it'd be an enormous help.

Anyway, thanks again for all your work with this course. I'm not sure GA is a realistic goal unless someone is available to help these students pre-nomination, but that's no disrespect to this class's work as a whole. I think they've improved a lot of content and appreciate their efforts, and Dr. Strassmann's efforts, tremendously! Cheers to all, -- Khazar2 (talk) 02:46, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Just to follow up, since these continue to suck up reviewer time and I haven't heard from you about another plan, I've removed the class's 4 or 5 remaining nominations from the queue without comment. All others had already quickfailed, and worse than those, one of these nominations was "passed" without review by a brand-new account--pretty clearly the students themselves--despite having large problems; luckily, another GA reviewer caught it and is now re-reviewing it.

I'm new to all of this, of course, but at the Education Noticeboard discussion about this course, somebody pointed out the helpful best practices document WP:ASSIGN; it seems to me to give some good guidance about how you and professors you're working with might better approach GA or DYK assignments in the future. And on our end, we'll try to be faster about simply deleting mass nominations like this instead of the somewhat confused response we had this time--sorry about the haphazard approach.

The Edit-a-thon will occur in parallel with Litquake, the San Francisco Bay Area's annual literature festival. Writers from all over the Bay Area and the world will be in town during the nine day festival, so the timing is just right for us to meetup and create/translate/expand/improve articles about literature and writers. SF edit-a-thons on March 7 and 8

ArtAndFeminism (3/7) and International Women's Day (3/8)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

In celebration of WikiWomen's History Month, the SF Bay Area Wikipedia community has two events in early March -- please consider attending!

First, we have an ArtAndFeminism edit-a-thon, which will take place at the Kadist Art Foundation from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday, March 7. We'll be one of many sites worldwide participating in this edit-a-thon on March 7th. So join us as we help improve Wikipedia's coverage of women artists and their works!

Second, we will be celebrating International Women's Day with the International Women's Day edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 8 from 1pm to 5pm at the Wikimedia Foundation. Our editing focus will be on women, of course!

This exercise, pioneered by Wikipedians Nikola Kalchev and Vassia Atanassova in 2015 and conducted in many places around the world, will help us all - from first-time wiki users to veteran Wikipedians - share ideas, while building an article together. If you have ideas (relating to Bay Area history, ideally) about a new article we could build (stubs and short existing articles are fine), please submit them ahead of time to coordinator Pete Forsyth. (User talk page or email is fine.)
