I view Abdullah H. Abdur-Razzaq as an important historical figure and believe that his Wikipedia Page is long overdue. I have looked back to the day when I edited Abdullah H. Abdur-Razzaq. I think I found the article when I was 'patrolling new pages'. I often patrol new articles either five or ten days after they have been created (in this case 5 days), so that authors have had a chance to get their article as they want it before other editors come in on them. I found your article needed some obvious improvements that did not require me to know anything about the gentleman, so I went ahead. You are the first person who has ever thanked me for working on 'their' article, so I am very appreciative of what you have written. Now I have told you how I found the article (I had never heard of him before).

Why was I 'inspired to contibute'? I find Wikipedia an inspiring project. Many people work here together for the common good, mostly in an unprejudiced, open-minded way, to benefit strangers they will never meet. We are building something that may last for generations. You may have been wanting to know whether I was sympathetic to Abdullah. I will answer that by saying I support justice for all people and harmony between all people, and in learning how that can be encouraged into being. I am not a Muslim but I am not opposed to them. I was brought up a Christian because of where I was born. I am interested in learning and in publishing truth, and WP seems to have found a way to do that. That you were unfamiliar w/the subject of my article - and simply make a habit of 'patrolling' and adding 'obvious improvements' to new articles on behalf of their authors - makes me even more grateful. Though it's surprising - and even unfortunate - that no one has thanked you up until now, it's my pleasure to express at least a small part of the gratitude you deserve. I'm sure mine is not the only subject worthy of being shared here on Wikipedia that benefited from your edits. Especially appreciated is the fact that you make a conscious effort to improve entries according to WP's standards while simultaneously preserving the content of the original author.

As I author new articles - and become more proficient at meeting WP standards in the process - I'd love to be able to do the same as you: share any expertise i develop along the way with others. So though I'm sure more thank yous are forthcoming in the future, in the meantime, rest assured that your efforts are not in vain. Hello Greenmaven. Sorry about getting the count wrong. I was counting Peace journalism too, but you're right, it should only be counted when you've completed it. Thanks for correcting that. I find reviewing very difficult - I had some bothers with reviews during the summer, too - and we need to be told when we're getting it right or wrong. 2010 Nobel Peace Prize

Hi Greenmaven. As I believe this was your first FA-level copy edit, I had a look through. I hope you won't mind, but I've corrected some things and placed fairly explicit edit summaries to explain why. If there are any you are unclear about, please do raise them -- I'm watching this page. One thing I haven't reverted is your sytematic changes from ndash to mdash, but the Dash section in the Manual of Style allows either form so long as it's used consistently, and the lead in the MOS says "Where more than one style is acceptable, editors should not change an article from one of those styles to another without a substantial reason." Please take care in removing tags

Please see this version of an article you removed cleanup and copyedit tags from. Not only was almost the entire article a copyvio (direct cut-and-paste plagiarism)-- it was a copyvio from non-reliable sources (and the remaining sources are deadlinks). Although I removed most of the coypvio text, the text that remained still had copyedit and cleanup needs, including wikification and deadlinks. When attempting to copyedit, it is important to consult sources, and also review MOS issues such as wikification and removing external jumps from text-- otherwise, it would be better if you left tags in place until other editors can address the issues. It has again come to my attention via complete coincidence that you have copyedited another article that has likely plagiarism. Please understand that when you do this, you camouflage the problem, and further it. Please do a cursory check of sources before copyediting. [[[Tammar Wallaby]]. There are plenty of articles worthy of a copyedit (meaning there are correctly sourced and correctly paraphrase sources); if you don't check sources before copyediting, how do you know what you are leaving our readers? I understand that in the spirit of a content, and seeking a reward, you and others may be working quickly, but please make a cursory check for reliable sourcing and accurate representation of sources without plagiarism before doing work to polish an article in ways that will deceive our readers into thinking they're reading something representative of our Project's core pillars. (talk page stalker) SandyGeorgia, I think you've been a little bit unfair here. The only tag that Greenmaven removed from Ciudad Bolívar, as far as I can see, was the {{copy edit}}, and your own tagging of it is not above reproach -- "unreferenced" was false, even after the removal of the copyvio. I'm also a bit surprised at some of your edit summaries: what have "for gosh sakes" and "d'oh" (twice) got to do with anything? Have you taken issue with the (almost drive-by) tagger who asked for a copy edit of that article in September 2010? I can't find anything like it on their talk page.

Different people have different skills, and there's a real issue about what is fair to expect of copy editors. Please see, for example, what SMasters wrote in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Archives/2011/September#Splitting the guild? -- sorry it's a long thread, but his key point begins with "Some people confuse copy editing with writing". Please see his immediate follow-up too. And, you know, random source checks don't always work, for two reasons: (a) For example, Giraffe (close paraphrasing -- I hope nothing worse): I copy edited that, and I did check a selection of sources, but noticed nothing amiss. Sorry, but unluckily I didn't happen on the ones that had the problems. And (b) Some copyvios are not of sources or external links. (I was working on such a case earlier today, as it happens, and I only spotted it because I saw in the history that the article creator had removed a {{db-copyvio}} tag minutes after it was added, and nobody had done anything about this.

Anyway, the copyright checking issue has been raised again on the GOCE talk page, at WT:GOCE#Copyright violation. There will, I believe, be some who say that it's not a copy editor's problem, so your input there would be valuable. (My own belief, by the way, is that this problem belongs to all of us, but we need to build the solution into the system, and not necessarily rely on copy editors, who won't all have the right skill set). Stfg—There is no need to apologise for being on my talk page. I welcome your input and am reading what you have pointed to, as well as thinking through the issues. I was aware on January 22 that Ciudad Bolívar had made it onto another talk page (Wikipedia talk:Featured articles/2012 RfC on FA leadership) and was being used to criticise the GOCE project. I had also read -"for gosh sakes" and "d'oh" (twice)- (and other sarcasm) and found it offensive. After seeing the level of conflict on 'RfC on FA leadership' and on Sandy's Talk Page, I decided to say nothing, at least until the end of January, and perhaps not at all. Now the editing of Tammar Wallaby is being raised, so I am returning to the issue. I need to read a few things (re COPYVIO and CE definitions and expectations) before commenting. I tried to clarify the problem phrases and did some further cleanup. Maybe is worth taking a second look. This article is absolutely central to WP:DACIA and I plan to do further work as it is still not where it should be. The usage of some terms like Sarmizegetusa/Sarmizegethusa, Roman Dacia/Roman-Dacia, as well as of different reference style will require a lot more cleanup. I think it was written by many users at different times. As a side note, do you know how to help with formatting and push some of the pictures up? I have checked all your recent edits, which were excellent, especially the clarifications. I found one error only and fixed it. I thought there was a second error but then I could not find it again! There might be a tendency to overlink. Usually just the first instance is made into a link. However, in so large an article I believe it is helpful to the readers to have links repeated through the text, so they don't have to scroll back to find a link. I have not had time to look at the photos yet.

Unjustified reversion of edits

I'm sorry, but your reversion of my edit to the Hotel Polen fire article was done in rather poor taste. First off, the article's main contributor solicited my involvement in copy-editing. What exactly about my edits was so counterproductive or ill-advised as to warrant a complete reversion? Your reasoning in the edit summary is also quite disparaging and borders WP:NPA. If, for future reference, you think my edits are indeed as defective as you made them out to be here, please notify me on my talk page and feel free to correct me where I'm wrong. I am sorry you are offended by my reversion of your edits. My reversion of your edits was justified, and I immediately followed the reversion by adding several of your phrases, which I thought were improvements, and acknowledged that they came from you. I had just done a very thorough revision of this article before you edited. Here are several examples of your edits that I oppose:

1. "6:30 am local time"—what other time would it be other than "local time"?
2. "Exited the building" in place of "ran outside"—there's a fire in progress!! "exited" is far too formal here.
3. "window openings"—no native speaker of English would use those words in this context. "window" is sufficient.
4. "closure" of the cafe suggests that it may have ceased to operate as a business—no reason to believe that was the intended meaning. We never use "closure" when a business has closed up for the day.

The latter three examples suggested that, even though your English may be very good, you were not a native speaker; I checked and found it to be so. It's a fact. If you choose to to be offended by it, I cannot help that. I wrote 'non-native speaker of English' into the edit summary for the benefit of other editors to see why I had made the changes. I will be more careful in future; I have no wish to offend other editors. I did say your edits were "in good faith".

You also made stylistic changes that added nothing to the article and were mostly quite pointless. The last three errors I have listed above require a quite subtle knowledge of English, so you need not react defensively to my reversions. The fact that another editor asked you to edit is irrelevant. Your edits have to stand on their own merits. I will respond again, if you wish to discuss this further. I do not, and did not, mean to upset you or to make a personal attack. --Greenmaven (talk) 06:45, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

I just think that my being a native speaker had little to do with anything, and that a complete reversion was unnecessary. That's the reason I inquired about the matter in the first place. As for the 2nd point: I think "ran outside" is suboptimal wording, although I can see why you'd consider "exited" too formal of a replacement. It's nothing more than an editorial disagreement. The 4th point was an honest mistake: the context made it sound like the cafe had in fact ceased its operation definitively, so I assumed this to be the case -- again, it had nothing to do with the fact that I'm not a native speaker. Regardless of your actions, I too apologize for taking them with a grain of salt; it's hard to interpret one's motives correctly over the Internet. Unfortunately an 'edit summary' requires us to be brief, and this may lead to an appearance of rudeness or insensitivity. I have been thinking more about this and hoping we would not be embroiled in a long argument. So I am relieved to read your conciliatory words as I begin my day. I should have taken the time to alter each of the phrases (the ones I listed) where I believed you had made the article worse, and left the rest as equivalent ways of saying the same things. None of us likes to see our efforts to improve WP undone by others. I was hasty in reverting your entire edit. I hope you can see that I also felt that your edit was undoing my thorough revision of the article. Having this conversation with you has taken vastly more time than if I had taken a little more care and time in the first place and not dealt with it by reverting you. So that has been a useful lesson for me. My edit summary— "reverted good faith edits by non-native speaker of english"—was actually intended to mean "I realise that you have tried to improve this article (good faith) but in fact you have made it worse because you (as a non-native speaker) do not completely understand idiomatic English usage". It was intended as an explanation not as a criticism.

On the second point: I still think "ran outside" is perfect wording in the context of a fire. It is a completely believable and accurate description of what was happening.

On point four: the pre-existing text was ambiguous; You took one meaning; I took another; your interpretation might be the correct one. In the absence of other evidence I thought my interpretation was the more likely to be true. It is certainly something that needs clarification.

Conflicts seem to be an unavoidable part of being an editor. I don't like them at all. But, handled properly, they can be very instructive. I have profited from this exchange with you and will be more careful in future. I hope you are no longer upset. help triage some feedback

Hey guys.

I appreciate this isn't quite what you signed up for, but I figured as people who are already pretty good at evaluating whether material is useful or not useful through Special:NewPages, you might be interested :). Over the last few months we've been developing the new Article Feedback Tool, which features a free text box. it is imperative that we work out in advance what proportion of feedback is useful or not so we can adjust the design accordingly and not overwhelm you with nonsense.

This is being done through the Feedback Evaluation System (FES), a tool that lets editors run through a stream of comments, selecting their value and viability, so we know what type of design should be promoted or avoided. We're about to start a new round of evaluations, beginning with an office hours session tomorrow at 18:00 UTC. If you'd like to help preemptively kill poor feedback, come along to #wikimedia-office and we'll show you how to use the tool. If you can't make it, send me an email at okeyeswikimedia.org or drop a note on my talkpage, and I'm happy to give you a quick walkthrough in a one-on-one session :).

A big NPT update

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

• Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
• Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

Stuff to look at

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism; this is a slightly updated mockup of the list view, and this is what the filtering tab is going to look like. All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcome on the NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here.

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

I appreciate there may be questions or suggestions where I've said "I'll find out and get back to you" and then, uh. not ;p. I sincerely apologise for that: things have been a bit hectic at this end over the last few weeks. But if you've got anything I've missed, drop me a line and I'll deal with it! refimprove

When I clean up a Notable people list page, I leave that header on if there are notable people needing verification that they have a notable connection to the town. With the List of people from Oak Park, Illinois there are well over 20 people that I could not verify their connection to the town from their biography page. New Pages update

Hey Jack Greenmaven/Archive 2012 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! New Page Triage/New Pages Feed

Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.

I have not had time to read the article myself. Still trying to read one of the old conversations you pointed us to, and to even read closely some of the thoughts on the Guild T page. Real life is pressing in on me a bit more than usual. What did you think of my comment on the 'purpose' column on the table of reviewed articles. I agree with it (though we may need to add FL and DYK to the list of opening characters). It's clear and not at all fussy :) The reasons why I haven't followed up on it yet are partly that I'm giving priority to agreeing how the drive should be, and partly that I want to let Allens lead on this, because that may make it easier for him to produce the new program he's talking about. There are some discussions to have about how to detect and report the progress of articles done, too. Meanwhile, are you happy with the way the drive format discussions are going? Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right. It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). We'll be holding two office hours sessions to discuss the tool and improvements to it; the first is at 19:00 UTC on 14 August, and the second at 23:00 on the 15th. Page Curation update

Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! As always, these features will need some work - but any feedback would be most welcome.

Page Curation newsletter

Hey Jack Greenmaven. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

I note that you reverted my split of this article, but did not leave any explanation apart from the fact that you had used Stiki to do so. Your reversion left Wikipedia in a poorer state than both before you made your edit and I made the split because: 1) The long standing split tag that I was addressing still remained unaddressed. 2) The articles that I had created were left cluttering up the place. i.e. if you are going to revert, please do it properly and if someone has tried to address a problem then at least show some willing to resolve the problem e.g. by suggesting another way. Danish Pastry

Hi Jack

I am a Dane who is new to Wikipedia! I tried to change the Danish Pastry text as I have found som errors in it.

For instance authentic Danish Pastry is not made with butter but margarine! In Denmark there is developed a special margarine only for Danish Pastry. Butter is used in the French croissant. The authentic Danish Pastry is a laminated dough with margarine and the other fats you write about are used in many "copy" products in other countries, where the dough are sometimes not even laminated.

Also: It is a Danish invention - the Vienna influence is the lamination tecnique. The Danes called it "Wienerbrød" (Vienna bread) lovingly acknowledges the Viennese for their contribution. And at that time in Denmark allmost all baked goods was called something "excotic". For instance a plain wheet flour bread is called "Franskbrød" (French bread) even though it has almost nothing to do with the French baguette.

There are quite a lot about this online but most is in Danish. The Danish bakery Mette Munk has some info in english on their site: www.mettemunk.dk They where the first company to export the frozen Danish Pastry to the UK and USA and are still producing.

I hope you will either let me correct/add theise facts or add them yourselves to make the site correct.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Manga

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that, in regards to the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga (page here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Neon_Genesis_Evangelion_chapters) the licensed title for the 12th volume, for the Viz edition at least, is not "Father and Son," but rather "Ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath." My source being the Viz manga website itself (Volume 12 is here http://www.vizmanga.com/reader/1180-neon-genesis-evangelion-12), and the licensed names of the other volumes on the wiki page in question are also consistent with the volume names given on the Viz manga website (for example Volume 13 (http://www.vizmanga.com/reader/1199-neon-genesis-evangelion-13), "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun") I just wanted to let you know that my edit of Neon Genesis Evangelion manga page had constructive intents, as it was meant to rectify the issue of the 12th volume not having the correct license title like the other volumes did. 70.183.52.31 (talk) 10:03, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Tengu

You incorrectly edited the page "Tengu". It is not "heavenly phoenix" it is heavenly dog. If you don't believe me, search the characters in a dictionary, the gu of tengu is spelled "狗" and in every case it's used it means "dog" except for the case of 狗鷲 which, in this case, the character is read as "inu" (which, again, is a word for dog) and it's the name of an eagle species. Typically the character "凰" is used in words to describe a phoenix (a Chinese phoenix) and "不死鳥" is a typical western phoenix. As well, the word "tenryuu" 転流 means to drift and has no connection to the word "tengu". In Japanese "tenryuu" would not be written as such and then pronounced "tengu". Tengu is written formally as 天狗 and in hiragana is てんぐ (literally te-n-gu) and tenryuu is てんりゅう. I know that tengu are represented as birds of prey, but the kanji does not lose it's initial meaning. See WP:ERA, our policy on this, where it says :"Do not change the established era style in an article unless there are reasons specific to its content. Seek consensus on the talk page before making the change. Open the discussion under a subhead that uses the word "era". Briefly state why the style is inappropriate for the article in question. No worries. There are loads of sources for the subject matter and the problem will be fixed. The article has had a troubled history re: outright copyvios and since they were revision-deleted it is impossible for anyone but an admin to track back beyond that point. It also covers an area of Indian and Islamic history that is notoriously subject to pov-warriors, vandalism etc. Nearly as bad as the articles concerning the Maratha people who were so influential in turning over the Mughals. Ok, you are now a reviewer and rollbacker. I am guessing that your previous ability to roll back a set of edits was through Twinkle. Twinkle uses JavaScript to implement the rollback function, but when you have the rollback right you can roll back edits using the MediaWiki software interface, which is much faster. You might want to take a peek at my scripts page to steal the rollback scripts if you are interested as well.
