Invitation to look at edits on IQ reference chart[edit]

I see the article IQ reference chart has been tagged for expert review since October 2012. As part of a process of drafting a revision of that article in my user sandbox, I am contacting all Wikipedians who have edited that article since early 2009 for whom I can find a user talk page.

I have read all the diffs of all the edits committed to the article since the beginning of 2009 (since before I started editing Wikipedia). I see the great majority of edits over that span have been vandalism (often by I.P. editors, presumably teenagers, inserting the names of their classmates in charts of IQ classifications) and reversions of vandalism (sometimes automatically by ClueBot). Just a few editors have referred to and cited published reliable sources on the topic of IQ classification. It is dismaying to see that the number of reliable sources cited in the article has actually declined over the last few years. To help the process of finding reliable sources for articles on psychology and related topics, I have been compiling a source list on intelligence since I became a Wikipedian in 2010, and I invite you to make use of those sources as you revise articles on Wikipedia and to suggest further sources for the source on the talk pages of the source list and its subpages. Because the IQ reference chart article has been tagged as needing expert attention for more than half a year, I have opened discussion on the article's talk page about how to fix the article, and I welcome you to join the discussion. The draft I have in my user sandbox shows my current thinking about a reader-friendly, well sourced way to update and improve the article. I invite your comments and especially your suggestions of reliable sources as the updating process proceeds. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 21:01, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have looked at your sandbox. I am not knowledgable about the topic, but you seem to have created a well structured article. My only edits were to revert vandalism. I do not expect to edit it or participate in discussions. Thanks for the invitation. I wish you well. --Greenmaven (talk) 08:17, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I wanted to drop you a note to see if you'd be interested in joining the Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive. In the past, you've been a huge contributor to our efforts, but I haven't seen you in the most recent drives. We've made lots of progress on the backlog, but we're getting a bit stalled out lately. We need more help to keep pushing down the number of articles that still need copy editing. The current drive is already halfway over! Please consider joining it and chipping in a few articles. Thanks for reading this, and I hope to see you there. —Torchiest talkedits 13:40, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE July 2013 news report[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

Hello! I was born in Uganda and grew up there. For the past 31 years I have resided in the United States. I return to East Africa every year since 2010. I have visited, albeit briefly, all the neighboring countries except South Sudan and perhaps Burundi. The limiting factor for me in both countries is the still dicey security situation. The information that I have about South Sudan is what I read on Wikipedia, not withstanding the fact that I have written some of the articles myself. Explanation for edit[edit]

Hey I'm GreekHistorian! I appreciate your career and you were just doing your job. I was just doing mine (which is deleting antiquated and irrational information on Wikipedia). About the Battle of Crete, I wasn't attempting some experiment, I was deleting what I believe was a one sided argument. Whoever wrote this failed to present the other side of the argument or state that it wasn't solved yet. Here is the error. He believes that that the 22, June, 1941 (launch date of Operation Barbarossa)was scheduled several weeks before. He fails to explain that the original date was 15, May, 1941. A campaign of such date could have been postponed cause of the Battle of Crete or other factors. I believe that would be all I've got to mention about the article for now.

If you like to hear a more reasonable argument see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Marita#Impact_on_Operation_Barbarossa.

I apologize if there is anything infantine in this complaint (I'm only a High school student). I really appreciate that you took your time reading this. I'd would appreciate if you share advise on how to edit Wikipedia articles. If you found anything contradicting my complaint please let me know.

Signed

I have restored the paragraph which you have now removed twice. It was supported by three references. By removing it you are editing according to you personal point of view, which is not allowable in Wikipedia. See WP:NPOV. I will leave a message on your talk page about learning how to edit. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 04:03, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

MPS revision[edit]

Hey! I'm not too clear about why my addition to the mucopolysaccharidosis article was revoked, as it was mostly meant to be a better phrasing of the previous work, which doesn't make much sense as it is now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.205.204.195 (talk) 20:20, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence you added was fairly vague and not supported by any evidence. --Greenmaven (talk) 04:07, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

a correction[edit]

I made a correction to one of the descriptions under one of mark levin's books. The current description under his book 'the liberty amendments' states that mark calls for an overhaul to the constitution. This is false. He is very specific that he calls for no such thing. So when I corrected it and made it accurate greenmaven said he returned it to how it was because he thought it was 'better' the way it was. So my question is-why would it be better as an inaccurate description? It is not. That makes no sense. The correction I made paraphrased levin's own words to a T. Obviously the correction i made makes the description better. How can it possibly be better being wrong? Please change it back to my description. It is an insult to Levin and myself to say it was 'better' being inaccurate and falseTaxi502 (talk) 11:38, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I stand by my reversion of your correction of Mark Levin. The phrases "breathing life into the constitution" and "to combat an overreaching federal government" indicate a non-neutral point of view (WP:NPOV). Also, none of what you wrote was substantiated by a reference, and can therefore be removed without further justification. BTW your next edit, which was reverted by ClueBot, was something that belonged on my talk page or the article talk page, not in the body of the article. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 23:03, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to a page[edit]

Hello! I noticed you reverted some changes a person I know made to the Oklahoma Baptist University page. We're concerned about the entire Controversies section, as it appears to contain parts that are either pure opinion and soapboxing (which only use this individual's blog as references), one-sided arguments that have few or no citations, or, in some cases, outright lies. A Controversies section in and of itself also appears negative. Such a section does not follow the general outline other university pages in this area, and, as an example, the page for University of California, Davis has its pepper spray incident listed under History, and not under a separate Controversies section. Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed editing this section to remove the false information? Typogrammer (talk) 03:36, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Having a controversies section seems to invite opinionated and non neutral editing. I recommend putting anything verifiable into a History section and deleting unverifiable material. Then delete the controversies section header. My apologies if I disrupted your attempts to edit out poor material in good faith. --Greenmaven (talk) 04:06, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to revert my edits to Oklahoma Baptist University. I will stay out of it. A further suggestion: try using the article talk pages to resolve differences of opinion rather than making contentious changes. I hope this is helpful. --Greenmaven (talk) 04:15, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your suggestions. I now see that the article's talk page is rather heated over this one section. I will start with the talk page to get the ball rolling on this. Would using WP:TM be a good option here? Typogrammer (talk) 05:39, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, I would not use template messages. Write in your own words. State what changes you plan to make, and why. If there is no immediate opposition, proceed to edit. Otherwise, argue your case, rather than risk an edit war. You may find that, by now, other editors have gone cold on the matter. Remember anyone can remove material for which there is no reputable source. I would guess that for much of the controversy there are no published sources. In the end, an article will only become stable when a consensus has been reached. Good luck! --Greenmaven (talk) 06:11, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you have to undo my minor changes for The Little Mermaid?[edit]

I'm not upset. I just would like an more reasonable explanation. I would be fine with you undoing my changes, if there's more a reason to it.

Spencer — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spencer Maverick (talkcontribs) 07:00, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You added unnecessary blank lines. You used the word 'overwhelmingly' about the reviews. This amounts to a strong expression of personal opinion, which violates WP:NPOV and WP:PEACOCK --Greenmaven (talk) 08:17, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

RE:[edit]

So nothing negative can be put on a page? Seems pretty unfair. If people want to know about something or someone they should get the whole story, not just the positive things. Or else people will only learn half of what should be known. You must be a lowely Mobage employee yourself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mobageisevil (talkcontribs) 10:23, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

actually my edit was constructive cos it was factual. what about the other so called "unconstructive" edits on that page, such as "crying" as louise's description and "absolute piece" for spencer? why did you just focus on mine? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.20.38.105 (talk) 05:30, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Check the article history and you will find I reverted another editor's work, after yours. The reason why I have not gone right through the article removing other things, is that I am using an automated process, which just presents me with recent edits of one person. If you think there are comments that should be removed, then do so, but carefully and respectfully. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 05:47, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

about ps[edit]

you said what you did, but for the reason, you said "because I believe the article was better before you made that change." Are you able to say something more specific? And what is the meaning of PS in "PS I love you"? I do not really mind you undo it (or delete it), but can you solve the problem at the same time? Enjoy doing the undoing, enjoy doing the deletion. Jackzhp (talk) 07:05, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In that phrase PS means 'postscript'. It is listed further down in the article. --Greenmaven (talk) 08:30, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You rejected one word....really, Jack?[edit]

My addition of one word, "modelesque" accurately describes the dolls. It's only one word. What could it hurt? You say it doesn't add anything, but it certainly takes nothing away from the article. I think you take your job too seriously.

Statick1 (talk) 16:20, 21 November 2013 (UTC)Statick1[reply]

Taking the job seriously is what makes a good encyclopedia. At first I removed 'modalesque' because I thought the word did not exist. Since then I have discovered that it does. I still think it is too WP:COLLOQUIAL for an encyclopedia. However, I will not revert it again, if you think it is appropriate. --Greenmaven (talk) 18:41, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you are sure that it is a copyright violation, you can certainly remove it. Please leave an edit summary that explains the reason (WP:CV). Thanks. --Greenmaven (talk) 10:07, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I removed it, because it was massive duplication of the existing article. Why on earth would you reinsert that? bobrayner (talk) 23:09, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Frankhu2016[edit]

The statement you left for Frankhu2016, "Please do not edit this article further: it is a specialist article best left to experts in the field." sounds like you're telling him not to edit the article at all, rather than just to not make the types of edits he was making, which goes against WP:OWN. Can you clarify what you meant for him? Thanks, Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:26, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No I am not going to make any further clarification to him. Frankhu2016 made his first edits, as I recall, on Supercomputing, by editing its lead paragraph in a very amateurish way. After I reverted this edit he attempted to add the same material a second and third time. I thought I asked him not to keep doing that in a fair and reasonable manner. I certainly do not think I WP:OWN the article, but I am a retired computer programmer and am in a good position to make a judgement call on Supercomputing. Frankhu2016 clearly needs to read up on the guidelines to editing WP. He did not even know how to post an edit on my talk page in the normal fashion, which I also helped him out on. Given his inexperience as a WP editor, I do think he would be better gaining more experience editing something less technical than Supercomputing. I am sure you are trying to be constructive, and I hope this clarifies my actions to you. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 21:47, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ptolemaic Kingdom[edit]

Responding to your post on my talk page, I don't know whether the edit I made was "constructive"; it was made for the sake of consistency. Most "History of ..." pages that redirect to a more general article redirect to a specific "History" section within that article (assuming such a section exists). I added the specific "History" section to the "History of Ptolemaic Egypt" redirect page both because that's how it's usually done and because all other "History of ..." pages redirecting to "Ptolemaic Kingdom" (which are "History of ptolemaic egypt" and "History of Greek Egypt") already redirect to "Ptolemaic Kingdom#History". I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to await a response from you before making my edit again or not; if you haven't responded to this within a full day, I'll assume that means you're ok with my making the same edit again. Jdaloner (talk) 23:09, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies. My mistake. I have undone my edit and the article is now as you left it. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 23:17, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Teahouse talkback: you've got messages![edit]

Please could you explain the reason for your revert? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.193.204.61 (talk) 22:32, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I thought the existing phrase "and includes specific, prepared food" already said what was needed, and that the words you added were repetitive and redundant. I see you have restored your own wording and added two references, which is fine, and I will leave it at that. The problem was that your wording was unnecessary, not that it was inaccurate or needed to be supported by references. Thanks. --Greenmaven (talk) 00:32, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The words I added are neither repetitive nor redundant - they are necessary. Imagine the following definition, where the word food has been replaced with music: A meal is an eating occasion that takes place at a certain time and includes specific, prepared music . Given your logic, a specific, prepared music also can be understood as a meal. You can say: music is not eatable, but neither is an occasion. BTW I am a programmer too, and also remember Fortran and punched cards :-) Regards. 85.193.204.61 (talk) 18:36, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly the wording could still be improved by emphasising that a meal can refer both to the occasion and the food that is eaten. I suggest the latter be expressed in a separate sentence. Regards. --Greenmaven (talk) 20:13, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, but conjunction "or" by its very nature refers equally to both subjects, doesn't it? Besides - even in a very long and comprehensive article - concise style of the first sentence is rather desirable in any encyclopedia. Look here. 85.193.204.61 (talk) 00:02, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hispanic Edits[edit]

Hi Jack,

my edits were accurate as Portugal did not belong to Hispania; instead, Portugal belonged to Lusitania. The current page is very confusing and also unclear, not to mention that the info is contradictory and inaccurate.

Any suggestions for improving this page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gofast01 (talkcontribs) 03:15, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is clear that Lusitania was a province of the Roman Empire and is therefore in no way relevant to the modern day definition of Hispanic. Hispania was the old English word for Spain, derived from the Spanish, Espania. However, South America was also settled by the Portuguese, so I think the article is fine in its present form. --Greenmaven (talk) 04:25, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kanji[edit]

Helo, in Chinese, the genus Ailanthus is zh:臭椿属 which has the species zh:臭椿 chòu chūn (A. altissima), this also has an alternative old name. The genus Toona is zh:香椿屬 which has some species called chūn, such as zh:香椿 xiāng chūn (T. sinensis), zh:红椿 hóng chūn (T. ciliata), etc. So I think real chūn belongs to Toona instead of Ailanthus, or maybe we should mention both genera. My editings[edit]

Dear Jack, I believe there is a mistake in the fact that you took down the editing done to the page Vishnu that I added. As the page says there are many avatars of Vishnu, which Zach is indeed one of, but sadly he is not considered of among the top eleven. I did not know where to mention him, and i found that that was the best place. Afterwards I tried to add him to the list of names of Vishnu which also was taken off. I apologize for any troubles but I feel that Zach deserves recognition. Thank You.With Hope, Zkala — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zkala (talkcontribs) 02:07, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In several places, the article refers to ten avatars of Vishnu. Therefore adding an eleventh avatar invalidates other parts of the article. Perhaps having Zach taken out of another article suggests you are not on the right track. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 02:22, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

C'mon, the Jags are only sorta a professional football team.

my editings[edit]

Hello again Jack, I do not believe that you received the message I sent to you. So, I would like to tell you again that the form of Vishnu, Zach, is

indeed a constructive addition to the page Vishnu. I am sorry that I misplaced where I put the information. According to Hinduism, there

are many forms of Vishnu, and there are ten main avatars. Sadly, Zach is not one of the top ten, but he is "up there". I do not know where

to put the information about Zach, so I ask if you could allow me to add him to a fitting place. Thank You. With Hope, Zkala — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zkala (talkcontribs) 00:59, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It would be helpful if you would sign your posts to Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Signatures. It would also be easier to help you if you provided a link to the article you are talking about: like this Vishnu. Also, the strange way in which your post (above) is displaying, is caused by you putting one or more spaces at the start of the line. I will write again when I have checked further. --Greenmaven (talk) 01:32, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It might be useful for you to read Dashavatara. It seems clear that there is a strong tradition of there being ten avatars of Vishnu. Zach is not one of them and in fact I have not been able to find any reference on the internet to 'Zach' as a Hindu entity. --Greenmaven (talk) 01:42, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reverts to 3-4 defense[edit]

Why are you reverting my edits to 3-4 defense? The Bills do play some 3-4, but it is not their base defense. Here is a cite: http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/buf/formation/4-3-defense. The parts I deleted from Wikipedia state—without a citation—that the Bills play a 3-4 defense.

It is really frustrating for newcomers to edit Wikipedia — every time I come on, someone always reverts my edits. I feel like there is a status quo bias and the bias should instead be in favor of providing accurate information, which sometimes means that information should stay off a page while the truth is hashed out. 71.186.236.30 (talk) 05:16, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry to hear you are feeling frustrated as a new editor. I deleted your edit because, unfortunately, some sports fans edit articles in line with their opinions or biases, rather than by the facts, and your edit looked like one of those. I agree that where the facts are disputed, the article should be discussed - and the place to do it is the 'article talk page' here Talk:3–4 defense. I suggest you add some comments to the talk page, together with your citation above. Meantime, I will undo my reversion of your edit, as I am convinced you are editing in good faith. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 05:28, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jack,

Thank you for your message. I would be grateful if you would offer your assistance as I have attempted to contact the person who reverted my changes; however, he is not responding to my messages.

I'm not entirely sure why my edits are being considered "unconstructive" and "disruptive".

I'm in no way pushing any religious, political, corporate or any other cause. World Citizen was registered as a company in 1992. It is run solely by volunteers, does not ask for monetary donations of any kind and is dedicated to encouraging and supporting worldwide philanthropic and humanitarian projects and acts of goodwill in the spirit of service; no hidden agenda.

Furthermore, "World Citizen" is an internationally registered trademark under the Madrid Protocol and its Treaty partners. Additionally, copyright of the name and ancillary images are all owned by World Citizen Pty Ltd.

I think that it's only fair that the Wikipedia entry for "World Citizen" states that it is a registered company and that it has a website. Would you please explain why this is not permissible?

Also, would you mind explaining what an "experienced editor" means? Are these editors Wikipedia staff?

Would appreciate any help you can offer and, again, my intention is not to be disruptive, but to present some facts about the registered company, trademark, copyright and associated site.

I look forward to your assistance and I thank you in anticipation. Naysan

NaysanFaizi (talk) 10:50, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I acknowledge your message and will respond more fully when I have had more time to think it through. Meantime, I suggest you do not edit the article further. Please assume Trueman is acting in good faith, and has valid reasons for reverting your edits. It is unfortunate that he will not respond to your efforts to discuss it with him, but he may have valid reasons for that as well.
Briefly, WP tries to supply unbiased information that can be verified and is about notable subjects (there is a lot of documentation in WP which addresses those concepts; I will give you some links later). Your role as the founder of World Citizen will raise issues of WP:COI. WP is not intended as a means by which organisations can promote there own interests. See WP:NOT. That is all I can say at present. I will say more later. It would be well worth while for you to follow the links in the 'Welcome' section at the top of your Talk Page. These will clarify some of the policies and guidelines that regulate editing on WP. Best wishes --Greenmaven (talk) 21:27, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are a number of interlocking issues here. Firstly the article, before you edited it, was a short piece along the lines of a philosophical discussion of the concept of world citizenship. There was an existing article called Global citizen into which this article was proposed for merging. (I would support that merger). There is an article called World citizenship which redirects the reader to Global citizenship Here you can see that efforts are being made to simplify WP by not letting articles develop in parallel that are essentially about the same topic.
You have then added a large amount of material about your organisation, which is definitely out of place in this article, and possibly in WP as a whole. I support all the reverts made by User:Philip Trueman. The best way to proceed would be for you to create an article in your own userspace, that is, as a subpage under your User Page. Tell me if you need help with that. By convention, other editors will let you experiment there without interference. If you can develop an acceptable article there you can move it later to mainspace. All this is descibed in WP documentation.
You have said "I think that it's only fair that the Wikipedia entry for "World Citizen" states that it is a registered company and that it has a website". Well, no. The idea, phrase, concept of being a 'world citizen' long pre-dates your registration of a company or a trade mark. You have no ownership of that phrase on WP, or of an article by that name. See WP:OWN
You have said "I'm in no way pushing any religious, political, corporate or any other cause". You are certainly pushing your company and its cause in what you have attempted to add to WP so far. Any article you succeed in adding will need to be factual rather than promotional for it to remain on WP. I suggest you give your article a name such as 'World citizen (company)'. This removes the current conflict about your editing of World citizen. Your new article would still need to comply with all WP policies.
I have tried to explain why your edits were called "unconstructive". They were called "disruptive" because you persisted in adding the material instead of trying to find out why it was being thrown out. --Greenmaven (talk) 23:06, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I used the phrase "experienced editor" to mean someone with a substantial history of successful editing on WP. The inference I am making is that such an editor will have enough knowledge of WP policies to make appropriate reverts of other editors contributions, and will be doing so in good faith. WP paid staff mostly look after technical matters: keeping the site running, servers, networks. Probably 99% of editing is done by unpaid volunteers. --Greenmaven (talk) 23:34, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, Jack,
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out.
I have read your message a few times over and have read through all the policies/procedures that you provided.
I still have many questions, but I don't wish to take up much more of your time so will whittle them down. I would greatly appreciate your help in understanding the following:
  • On the World citizen page, it talks about Garry Davis and the organisations he founded. Also, two of his logos are displayed. Would you mind explaining why Garry's companies are ok to be listed, but not World Citizen®?
  • There are many companies listed on Wikipedia containing large amounts of information on what they do and how they do it. How do these companies get their content listed?
  • How do you see World Citizen as different to the following?:
NB: Just so that you are aware, regarding the list of companies above, World Citizen encourages and supports all such organisations by giving them a central hub to promote their endeavours, which provides a "one-stop shop" for people looking for a variety of outlets to volunteer their services through other means than just money.
Based on your message and the articles you recommended, I can create a new page called "World Citizen (company)" instead of including the content on the main World citizen page. I would imagine this would come under the "disambiguation" listing if someone were to search for "world citizen". As an example, if I search for "shell", there are many articles suggested. Under the Business section, I see "Shell corporation".
I'll create this in my own user space as a subpage, as you suggested. I will let you know when I've done this and, if you have the time, I would appreciate your review and feedback.
Your help has been invaluable - thank you.
NaysanFaizi (talk) 09:32, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I will look at the 'Gary Davis' question; I suspect his material does not belong there either. You are right that many companies have pages on WP and it is a matter of continual contention, because rather than being strictly factual, many companies (and individuals) attempt to use WP as a means of self-promotion. It is really important that you understand the first of the 'five pillars' of WP - (WP:FIVE) - WP is an encyclopedia, not a directory for enterprises or individuals. This will still apply to "World Citizen (company)", if you go ahead and create it. And, yes, a disambiguation page may be necessary. You have named four organisations, above; one of them is Oxfam. The difference is that they are unquestionably notable. (WP:NOTABLE), whereas I think "World Citizen (company)" may not satisfy WP criteria for notability. I advise you to explore that, before doing a lot of work on an article that may still be challenged and recommended for deletion. Has your organisation come to the attention of the media? Is it referred to in a book? Another thing to be aware of is that you cannot just cut and paste material from your website into WP, because it is considered a violation of copyright, even though you may have written that material yourself. See WP:COPYVIO. I intend to pursue the question of whether the existing article should be merged with Global citizen. Perhaps you could tell me whether you think these two expressions are equivalent? --Greenmaven (talk) 18:33, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please continue, and centralise, the discussion on the talk page of the article, where I have added a section ([here]) --Greenmaven (talk) 02:55, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Jack ... Hope I'm doing this correctly. My comment on the Snatch/Argo page was my first attempt at adding anything to Wikipedia, and likely my last. I appreciate your comments about not disturbing the flow of the article, but I thought a parenthetical aside in that spot wouldn't be out of order (and would be where even the most casual browser could find it). However, if you think it belongs elsewhere so that editors will notice it, please move it as you see fit. (I note that you found it very quickly.) My interest in learning the vagaries of another "language" is low, indeed; I've just about exhausted my interest in figuring out how to respond to you.

Hi Jack,

Thanks for your interest in the page. As Lauren Beukes I generally avoid editing my own page out of respect for Wikipedia's processes, except to correct major factual errors, and always in accordance to Wikipedia's principles and guidelines, or in those cases where it's creating confusion.

The "of French and Dutch descent line" is creating confusion.

I've had journalists emphasize that, when its largely irrelevant, and seen tweets recently that imply I'm really Dutch/French) (eg. from yesterday: "@XetraSherpa @mrsxroots @ProseFTW Lauren Beukes (nationalité sud-africaine mais origine française-néerlandaise) a écrit Zoo City, ça compte?") even though my interview in the source article referenced, from a very small but credible website, specifically talks about how that was 350-400 years ago and that I identify as South African, that those historical links to Europe are so old they aren't even sepia-tinted photographs, they're oil paintings. My family, apparently, came in with Jan van Riebeeck's ship in the 1600s.

Unfortunately, as you will know, few people click through to the source, or even read the footnotes.

I've been finding myself having to explain a lot, recently, that I really, really am South African and it's incredibly frustrating.

Can we correct the wording?

If it's about establishing my race as a white South African, I'd rather it said that plainly. (Although I do think the picture is a giveaway)

"Lauren Beukes is a white South African, born in Johannesburg, currently living in Cape Town."

If Wikipedia really, absolutely does have to mention the French/Dutch descent (which is not established fact, it's family lore), could we move it much further down the page? Or create a separate section on Ancestry.

It's a bit like saying "Jonathan Franzen, an American author, originally of British and Swedish descent" (or whatever he is) when his family came to America with the Pilgrims. (Again, I'm making this up, I don't know anything about Franzen's ancestry, because it's irrelevant to his Wikipedia entry or his identity as an American author.)

I'd really appreciate any help on correcting the wrong impressions this wording is creating - or finessing the language to clarify.

Here are two additional sources in counterpoint to the WorldSF article.

From my FAQ: [1] And major newspaper The Mail & Guardian, which describes me as "an international bastard" [2]

Thank you so much

All the very best,

I sympathise with your position and will do what I can to help. My original intention was to restore some wording that appeared to be properly backed up by a citation. I am guessing that you had a second attempt to get the article as you wanted it. Since then, another editor User:HelenOnline seems to have tried to follow my course and restore the same material. I think it is unwise to describe yourself as "white South African" - as you point out the photograph says that. I will attempt to edit the article to make it accurate and acceptable. As for the "french/dutch ancestry", any statement that cannot be backed up by a reliable source, is deletable by anyone. I shall now delete it. Get back to me on this page if you need to. --Greenmaven (talk) 06:01, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Answering your question: "If Wikipedia really, absolutely does have to mention the French/Dutch descent (which is not established fact, it's family lore)...", there is absolutely no stipulation in WP policy that anyone's ancestry is to be included in any article. Please read the notice on the 'talk page' of the article to understand our position on the biographies of living persons. We must have evidence for anything that is contestable. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 06:16, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have added the two links you supplied above to the article, under 'External links'. --Greenmaven (talk) 06:25, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Mr Greenmaven,

I would be most grateful if you do not revert the article, as prior to the edit the contributions of KOC employees from the Indian subcontinent are not reflected. Neither is the racial discrimination suffered by these employees.

Thank you for your consideration — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.147.143.42 (talk) 16:28, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have reverted my edit. Thank you for supplying a reference, however it actually supports the article as it stood before you reverted my edit. The reference contains the words "Where Alissa’s portrayal of Ahmadi’s history takes a great turn is in the eventual demographic switch: from the British, American, and South Asian residents to Kuwaitis and other Arabs. In the process, Ahmadi became a place of openness, both spatially and socially, where one interviewee remembers coming to cruise its wide streets in an open car". There were no statements about racial discrimination in the reference and the word 'Indian' did not occur. Even so, I will not make further edits to the article. I am adding our conversation to the talk page. Regards --Greenmaven (talk) 03:23, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A kitten for you![edit]

thanks for you message, I'm rather not savvy with all this contribution to Wiki, but I did manage to start a book.

As to the article I accidentally posted to the Talk section, I simply couldn't figure out how to get it to an appropriate location. I thought I was adding it to the page for Ermengarde of Hesbaye, because as her direct descendant I wanted to spark interest in people adding their identities to a list of LIVING Descendants.

I just think it's wonderful to learn so much about my verified ancestors, but I think people would love to know of others who actually descended from those ancestors as well! THANKFULLY I saved the article, which took me a good deal of time to put together, so I'm going to ask you can I add it as an edit to the Ermengarde of Hesbaye page, or do you have issues with that?? It's just a part of ongoing history so I think it's important. And if need be I can put you in touch with our family genealogist, Candita Lee, while she's still living, her mother who did a great deal of the work decades ago, before computers, by hand, passed away a couple of years ago. So if verification is required, time is of the essence because Candi is the one in possession of the charts and was part of the process of collecting it all.

I'm so glad you wrote to me because I couldn't figure out how to get in direct contact with a live human being!! thanks again. Thanks for any help and guidance you can provide me!! Ermengarde Tenderstone

Live and Let Die edit[edit]

Hi! I was just curious as to why my four edits to Live and Let Die (film) were reverted. Was there really something wrong with them? Generally, if I make a mistake on a James Bond-related article, my friend User:SchroCat will let me know why. Thus, I generally assume that if something gets past him, them it must be acceptable. I just thought I'd double check with you before I restored anything, so to avoid an edit war. Thank you for your time! Survivorfan1995 (talk) 05:07, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted because the correct term is 'drug lord' not 'drugs lord'. I have confirmed this by checking the WP article - 'drugs lord' gets redirected to 'drug lord'. However, your link to Heroin is fine as it is the first mention in the article. Thanks for your polite enquiry. I hope we will be in agreement. --Greenmaven (talk) 05:18, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to this edit on the Licence to Kill article, "drugs lord" is acceptable and proper in British English. User:SchroCat was the one who redirected that link in the first place since all James Bond articles are written in British English. But, I know how it is, dealing with differences between American and British English, about which User:SchroCat has helped me get used to by undoing some of my changes. If you're still unsure, you might want to send him a message and ask him about it, because he would definitely know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Survivorfan1995 (talkcontribs) 05:30, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

comments on unedit my revision on "Zedong Mao"[edit]

I think your unediting my revision was not fair. What I added was simply a fact that western nations did implement economic embargo against China, and as we can see from the current embargo against iran and North Korea that embargo did impact China economy in a significant way. It is also now a popular view that if there were no embargo, Chinese starvation would have lasted much shorter, as what has happened to Afraic nations. I assume you try to be fair with no personal political bias. If that is the case, you should keep my revision, or indicate anything specific inappropriate. Overly relying westerners' views on Chinese history is disrespectful to Chinese people.Oldhand 12 (talk) 04:25, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You have made several strong statements such as "Western nations not only refused to provide food aid to release Chinese famine, but also they encouraged India and Taiwan to invade Chinese territory". These statements need references to back them up. Please read Help:Referencing for beginners and Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources. All WP articles on major political figures or topics attract a lot of conflict between editors. For that reason it is especially important to supply reliable references. My intention is to be unbiased. --Greenmaven (talk) 04:50, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My guess is that you will only want to edit the Kiap article, rather than become a regular editor. So, I am willing to help you do that, because there is a lot of learning needed to add material to articles without someone challenging your work. --Greenmaven (talk) 05:34, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for talking to my friend. I am confident that you are Chris Viner-Smith. I am going to read up on WP policies on copyright. WP management is extremely averse to breaching people's copyright, even when the author is adding his own work. I will follow that up for you. --Greenmaven (talk) 06:01, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am glad your friend Robyn convinced you that I am chris Viner-Smith - I can get the AFP Commissioner to verify if required. This process is cumbersome and not very practical as there are so many barriers and protocols that I have no clue about - I just want to put some important information on the site - that it would be useful if rather than tell me what I cannot do, tell me what I need to do to get the article onto the site. Thank you for following up what seems to me to be ridiculous - that I might not be able to quote from my own book, but if it helps I can rewrite the stuff - I can put up something from me can't I - I don't need it to be validated by the AG or someone who has no idea of what I am talking about?

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps you could talk me through it?

Hello and thank you for making this revert. That vandal or group has been adding similar libel and worse for several years, and the victim has quite reasonably complained. Your reverts to Theory U[edit]

Jack,

Thanks for your note. I'm sorry, I was not precise in my language. More than being distinct, these are two unrelated topics - and the entry links them together, both in title and in content. They should not be under the same entry. The information that states Scharmer expanded on U-procedure is factually inaccurate, which is why I removed it. How would you suggest we go about ensuring the page is as factually accurate as possible?

Thanks, Adam Ayukelson (talk) 22:35, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I reinstated the material you deleted, because it was at first deleted without explanation. Having looked further, I note the claim,"Claus Otto Scharmer studied the method in classes taught by Dr Glasl and also interviewed Glasl", and I see you have left the name of Glasl, as a leading figure in the article. Even so, I have no knowledge in this field, and I will leave you to revert my edit, and edit further as you see fit, because you claim to know this field (WP:AGF). GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation[edit]

December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

Coordinator election: Voting is open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January through 30 June 2014. Voting will run until the end of December. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

Your accusation of "vandalism"[edit]

Hello:

You have been accusing me of vandalizing the Winnipeg webpage, and I want to explain my reason for my edits. There are sections of the page that depict my city in a negative light regarding crime. Not every city's crime history is reported on these pages, and I don't feel that Winnipeg's needs to be portrayed either. It will give people a bad impression of my city which does not need to happen. This is why I want the crime section gone. If other people from other cities want to have their city portrayed in a negative light, that is their choice. However, I don't agree and am being proactive in removing these unnecessary stats on the Wikipedia page.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cokejoint (talkcontribs) 04:33, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

By now you will see that another editor is replacing the material on Winnipeg that you are keen to see removed. Point No. 1 - Winnipeg is not being singled out for having its crime statistics recorded. Point No 2 - the material you are deleting is well verified by sources. Point No 3 - your desire to see your city well regarded is admirable. However, Wikipedia is about recording verifiable facts, rather than reflecting personal points of view, or presenting any place in a better light than the facts indicate. "being proactive in removing these unnecessary stats" amounts to pushing your own point of view WP:POV, whereas WP aims to be neutral. Best wishes --Greenmaven (talk) 05:36, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

David Morris Aerial Skier[edit]

Jack, You keep correcting a change I made on the Australia at the Winter Olympics wiki page. I corrected the comment on the photo of my brother David Morris that he was the "first aerial freestyle skier to compete at Olympic level". This isn't true, he was the first MALE aerial skier to do so. He couldn't be the first overall skier as two olympic medals had been won by Australians in the winter olympics before he jumped at this level. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter morris13 (talkcontribs) 05:39, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't keep correcting Australia at the Winter Olympics. As far as I can see, I have only reverted one of your edits. I did this because you left an ungrammatical sentence (the word 'at' occurred twice). The first 'at' needed to be 'to', it seems. Since then, someone has added the word 'male' to the grammatically correct sentence left by me. So your concern has been resolved. --Greenmaven (talk) 06:17, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy Cannizarro owned the Swiss Tavern, a neighborhood bar and restaurant in Lynbrook NY that had music on the weekends. It was a thriving business when he took it over. First he killed the restaurant business, then the bar went out of business. 23rd Awit Awards[edit]

Hi Jack, I removed a huge content from the article because its too much detail for a topic like this. For me, although Awit Awards is considered the Philippine version of the Grammys, it doesn't get a lot of interest from the readers so I decided to lessen the details as I would do to the next Awit Awards articles I would create. And it also seems that this article don't get a lot of unique edits from different users other than me. For me, creating these articles are really stressful if you're the only one whose editing it so I decided to unify and implement this smaller format to this article. By the way, I'm still in the the process of creating 22 more Awit Awards articles so to make it easy, I decided to use this format. I hope you understand. Wp is particularly careful not to make false statements about living persons (See WP:BLP). Your statement was not provided with a reference directly following it. So I deleted it. These sort of comments are often added by vandals. I have since checked the article and the reference supporting your statement, and I acknowledge it is true. However, I stick by my revert, because someone's sexual orientation is not of such importance that it belongs in the lead paragraph, especially such a short one. Her orientation is explained further down in the article, as appropriate, and in the categories. --Greenmaven (talk) 03:05, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You need to be very careful making statements like "This man is a first class fraud only". That is libel and gets thrown out of WP immediately. Also "His figures there were very ordinary" is an expression of your point of view only. See WP:POV. What you can do is edit out any statements you believe are false, and which are unsupported by a reliable reference. See WP:REF. You could alternatively add a "citation needed" WP:template after any questionable claims. Thanks for asking. --Greenmaven (talk) 04:01, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

At least it's provided me with a chuck-le (well needed after spending the morning fixing infoboxes completely decimated by an overly exuberant newbie). Take a quick squiz at what it was related to. I wonder whether Chris Chuck was an Anglicization for a bowler of Indian or Sri Lankan decent: Chukinawobbli or Chukinagoogli. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 05:35, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
When I re-read your post above, because I needed another late afternoon beer, I was horrified to read your Freudian slip. You seemed to be sending me 'hugs' but actually it was 'bugs'. Now I know what you really think of me as an editor. No wonder I have been itchy lately... --Greenmaven (talk) 05:42, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hahaha! I explained it to you on my talk page a while ago. 'Tis my own contraction for 'big hugs'! Don't know what you've got... just don't pass it along with the next beer. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 05:47, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Speculation[edit]

Hi there, Jack. A little over a year ago I worked with another editor to make some improvements to the Speculation article and have been keeping an eye on the page since then, on behalf of the Managed Funds Association, for whom I am a consultant. Today, I noticed that an IP address editor had added a new Speculation#Example section to the article, which I don't believe belongs here. I saw that you'd undone a further edit to this section, and I was wondering if you'd take another look at it for me? While this is a good pop culture example of the meaning of the word speculation, it is not an example of financial speculation, which is actually the focus of this article.

Can you take a look and remove the section if you agree? I'd be WP:BOLD and make this change myself, however I stick to the "bright line" rule for COI editors and would rather not make any direct edits to the article. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 18:17, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

 Done --Greenmaven (talk) 18:50, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and for the lightning turnaround as well! WWB Too (Talk · COI) 18:54, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
