    Weber State criminal justice course[edit]

    Hi Jesse V. I'm incorporating a semester-long Wikipedia assignment into my policing course at Weber State. Would you be willing to be the Wikipedia ambassador for our course? The assignment will closely follow the Wikimedia Foundation's suggested syllabus with the exception that I'll give them a list of pages they can choose from. I thought it would be nice to have someone localish to help me and my students. I'm computer savvy and have done some HTML coding, but I'm new to editing/writing on Wikipedia.     Thank you for your efforts. I have removed the Dead End tag because it's no longer accurate, as well as the Orphan tag because there are incoming links. However, its always a good idea to add more incoming links where appropriate. I left the Wikify tag because there is still further cleanup and organization left to be done. Consider checking out high-quality articles and observing their formatting, and then adapt the Marta Cuervo article to match. Wikipedia's guides and polices should also be helpful.     About the kitty: look at WP:TPS. Also, I really love cats. (I'm thinking about cats again...) Edit conflicts have a tendency to happen, especially on high-traffic sites. If two editors change two different sections of the article an edit conflict won't happen. There's a whole group of Wikipedians who call themselves New Page Patrollers, and they basically look through all the new articles to see if they are good enough for Wikipedia (not every article is, see WP:Notability). That's why the edit conflict happened: articles get a fair bit of traffic on their first few days. There's plenty that you can do to expand and improve the article.     • Thanks. I was actually worried the wall of text was hurting your chances (and worried about the sheer weight of the main FAC page); the article looks in fairly good shape, but I'm sure a few extra reviewers couldn't hurt.

    To the contrary, I'm pretty sure that the "wall of text" actually improves the chances of success. It's not a vote, and I'm sure the FA director and his delegates appreciate the fact that the reviewers did such a thorough job. It shows that's its more than a "Support, looks good to me. ~~~~". I'm actually happy that there's such a large amount of feedback, it has greatly improved the article more than four short responses ever could. I've resolved most all of Emw's comments, and I've still got a few from Ed that I need to finish off. I'm mainly waiting for his reply.     Adding breaks to the F@H review[edit]

    Hello Jesse. I notice that Wikipedia:FAC#Mitt Romney now contains some arbitrary breaks (such as ====Break 1====). These breaks can be helpful when the review has become very large, since they allow sections of the review to be edited. How would you feel about allowing such breaks in the Folding@home review?     Up until now I had assumed that they weren't allowed or something. One could section the page off, one for each reviewer. However, it may be too late to do this, since the nomination seems to be closing down now that Emw gave his support.     WP:RFPP[edit]

    Hi Jesse, just wanted to drop you a note to alleviate your concern about F@H being on the main page tomorrow. I declined your protection request since pages are rarely preemptively protected, generally it's best to live up to the "anyone can edit" mantra. I see from your userpage that the F@H page is pretty special to you, but rest assured it will be fine. Vandalism on the featured article isn't as overwhelming as you might expect, and generally it's reverted within minutes (if not seconds); on the flip side, often being on the main page serves as a peer review of sorts since it's open to a wider audience, you might see a tiny tweak here or there coming from an IP editor.     Thanks to you both! Yes it took a lot of time and effort, it was sort of a self-taught crash-course in molecular and computational biology. Yes, the source for those Participation and Performance graphs might be one. But users have to download the software, complete a WU, and upload it for it to count.     If you are curious about the current server-side state of Folding@Home on the PS3, I was able today to upload a work unit from my PS3 to the server and download a new work unit. To make this possible, it was necessary to disconnect my router from the Internet so that the client would time out on the software update check (to avoid the update from Sony that disables the client), then reconnect my router once the protein folding simulation was running. The PS3 reconnected while the F@H client continued to run. According to Stanford's F@H server status page, the PS3 assignment server is still running, and two of the four PS3 work unit servers continue to accept connections. For the time being, then, PS3s which manage to avoid the client update can still contribute to F@H. - Ilednuredgas (talk) 22:18, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Unfortunately, the new work unit I downloaded, as described above, was never uploaded. All attempts by my PS3 client to connect to the FAH servers since that day have been unsuccessful. The server status page continues to show the PS3 assignment server still running fine, plus one of the PS3 work unit servers, and you can talk to their port 80s just fine (both servers use that port for FAH duties), but at last check 2 nights ago, my PS3 client still gets no response from the servers. I'm not sure what to make of this situation. If the PS3 portion of FAH is indeed now formally shut down, then why leave the servers in a semi-active state? The work unit server even reports work units available to distribute. The server status page, while not updated in real time, is nonetheless very current. Is it just a bug in the reporting?     Article Feedback Tool update[edit]

    Hey Jesse V.. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

    We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

    As part of this class, my classmates and I have been charged with the task of making a substantial contribution to a Wikipedia article on a topic of Molecular Biology.     Hi Erin! Thanks for contacting me. I think most every student has used Wikipedia at some point, whether their in high school or college. It simply is a handy resource. But far less have actually done substantial editing. Authoring an article can be an extremely educational opportunity. Not only does it require you to do a lot of research for the article itself, but you also gain experience with working with others who may or may not have differing viewpoints than you do. You learn how to respond to discussions with facts and citations, and how to help address a problem that they saw that you missed. I think it's a great experience. I'm very pleased to see that there are courses, such as this one, that add this to their curriculum. It should be a win-win all around.

    Starting a new section in your sandbox is pretty easy. You should be able to just use equal signs, just like you see at the top of a section. Surround the section title with two equal signs (two on each side) and it should make a section. Use three to make a subsection, and so on. You can do this by clicking edit at the top of the page and make a new section at the bottom, or you can just make a section from within a section. Either way, words surrounded by two equal signs are interpreted as a section and will be created as such.
    Yes, that tool has been down for some time now. There are alternatives however. You might try https://toolserver.org/~holek/cite-gen/index.php instead, although it might just be easier to use the Cite Journal tool from the Edit toolbar as described here. • Jesse V.(talk) 02:52, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Hey Andrea. Editing Wikipedia does take some getting practice, but one you understand how it works, it gets second-nature. I've made all the basic mistakes before, and I think every editor forgets the tildes at some point in time. Nothing to worry about. I would recommend that you start with something simple. Feel free to keep playing around in your sandbox, which I see that you've created. Keep experimenting with various syntax and see how everything works. Once you understand the basic formatting commands, editing becomes much easier. I also find that it's handy to follow examples. If you're trying to do something, it's quite likely that someone else has already done that, so then you can just copy-paste their wiki-code. Wikipedia also has many documentation pages where you can look up how to use a particular thing, or what the rules or suggested uses of something are.     Question on Group Pages[edit]

    Hello Jesse. What happens if multiple group members edit the group page at the same time? Will one person's edits get lost when another person "saves"?     This is called an edit conflict. You can see what happens if you open up two tabs and save an edit to your sandbox, and then in the other tab make a different change and try saving. The Mediawiki software (which powers Wikipedia) will see that there is a conflict, and show you the issue. At this point, you have to solve it, and manually merge your changes with the other ones. The first person to hit Save doesn't have to do this of course. Mediawiki is smart though, and won't throw an edit conflict if the multiple users are each editing a different section or subsection. The edit conflict will still happen if more than one user tries editing the section at the same time though. This is similar to how git works, if you've ever done programming with source revision control.
    Ways to avoid this include editing a specific section, as that lowers the chance that you will conflict with someone else's edit. There's nothing wrong with making small edits anyway, rather than large changes. Alternatively, you could copy the wiki-syntax into your text editor of choice, modify it, and when you're ready to save you then merge any changes they made into your copy, and then save the whole thing. This approach has disadvantages of course, one being that you have to be careful to merge all of their changes so that they don't lose their work, but for involved edits I find that this method is fairly fail-safe.     Molecular Biology Course - Wikipedia Article Reviews - Unit 11[edit]

    Hello Jesse, We are needing guidance on which articles to review in Unit 11. The issue is that the layout of the table for "Students/Articles" at the bottom of the Class Assignment page suggests that we will be reviewing a different article each time (Units 9, 11 and 13) with the headers "review 1", review 2", "review 3". However, the "review 2" column (presumably for Unit 11) has not been populated. So it is unclear if we are supposed to review the same article as in Unit 9 or wait for the assignment of a different article. Jim Irwin posted this same question 2 days ago in the Class Discussion Thread on Blackboard, but no response yet. I also sent an email this morning to Dr. Safford, but no response yet.
