Spectrum reallocation

I appreciate what you've done so far. I had been thinking of this topic in terms of one section in an article, but neither of the articles I had tried putting it in were really appropriate. Now that I know what to call it, it has an article. But that article really needs improving. The third section needs a better title than "voluntary", but I'm not sure just what.

If it seems biased, I do look at this one magazine that seems to focus on the negatives, and I am a member of a web site where they've been treating this topic like the end of the world. Though most people there do have cable or satellite. Smallbones loves Brooklyn

I was in Brooklyn on Saturday, but unfortunately didn't have time to check in (plus the parking scares me). I photographed 18 sites though, leaving about 14 left to go. I saw DM and a new user User:Bkcrabby got a few pix. I'm hoping you got some as well.

2 other things:

• You should definitely go to and photograph Stuyvesant Heights Historic District. I got there too late so my pix are flawed. It is likely the nicest historic district I've seen, and goes entirely against my preconception of Bedford-Stuyvesant. All of Brooklyn really impressed me.
• At Temple Beth El of Borough Park I replaced 2 pix by User:Bkcrabby. I have mixed feelings on this, e.g. "Welcome to Wikipedia, but my pix are better!" Please revert me there if you think I made a mistake.

I too was late to Brooklyn Public Library on Saturday, arriving after Noon because an injury a week and a half ago was acting up and making me move very slowly. Spent the time advising a few latecomers how to get to various targets, chatting with my fellow Wikimedia New York members, teaching someone about markup, and installing Adobe Acrobat Reader for a stranger who was not at all interested in Wikipedia. Sunday I arrived even later, this time because I was hurting less and decided to bike there, and learned that my recovery hadn't gone far enough. Spent most the time using the library's fast connection, to correct coordinates, diffuse cats, and otherwise curate old pictures. And discussing the relation between orthography and linguistics with a cute, bright newbie. Wow, young women didn't seem quite so cute or so insightful in my day, long ago. No, or almost no, new pictures either day due to immobility.

Bed-Stuy has lovely architecture, being mostly built in a golden age of suburban sprawl, what with the BRT Lexington Avenue Line and all. I intend to visit again at least during the NYC Marathon in a couple months, if not a few times before, depending in part on my thus far uneven physical recovery. Nice people there, too. When I was bright and quick, it was passing through its days as a miserable, drug-infested slum, which made the kind of reputation that usually far outlives the reality. South Bronx, similar.

Indeed I reverted your superior pix of Temple Beth El, though it is not my intention that it should be permanent. Very often newbies never come back after their first day or two of editing, so in a few days (a week?) we ought to restore your definitely better ones without losing any ground. Meanwhile we can hope to encourage a newbie boasting about an accomplishment. Understanding Wiki ideas like "revert" can await a later lesson. Keep up the good work, have fun, and today my back (muscle problem, not bones or joints) feels much better and I'll be dining with friends in Brooklyn Heights tomorrow evening. Why did you revert my edit of fork? I removed an unnecessary comma:

The curved fork that is used in most parts of the world today, was developed in Germany in the mid 18th century.

What surprises me about you though is that you've never taken any pictures of the ruins of Van Cortlandt (NYC station). Jim: An editor named User:Candleabracadabra started an article on Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church at 237 East 62nd Street (just west of 2nd Avenue), and left a request on my talk page for a photo. I worked with another editor, Robert McClenon, to place a new "Lines of business" section, which provides a more accurate overview of Verizon's products and services. As part of the discussion of FiOS in this new section, I included some information about the removal of copper wires and their replacement with fiber optic ones. This information appears in the "Controversies" section, but I thought it was better to discuss it in context under "Lines of business," rather than have it appear in "Controversies", with the idea that the section in "Controversies" could then be removed.

Although Robert McClenon moved the new "Lines of business" language over, and agreed that the paragraph under "Controversies" should now be removed, it doesn't look like he's had time to actually make the edit.

Do you think you might be able to take a look at removing the "Copper-wire removal" section under "Controversies"? Thanks so much, VZBob (talk) 21:28, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi Jim, the image in Punic Wars that was broken was because Commons had deleted it. They seem to think that a 3rd century image can still be in copyright. Might be true in some crazy countries, but WP does not have to consider that so I have restored the original WP version before it got moved to Commons. Since you stated in your edit summary that you replaced the image only because the link was broken I have reverted your edit, but feel free to put your image back if you have other reasons for replacing/adding it. Revert tagging

Why did you revert the taggings of those pages? Wikiproject USA is a higher-level project, but your reasoning seems to be that if its in NYC's Wikiproject its in WP:USA. They do not show up on the records. Just like how WP:SKYSCRAPERS and WP:ARCHITECTURE are on Talk:388 Greenwich Street. This is no mistake and the boxes are collapsible. The article's are important to cover broadly and completely. Some biographies of living people have 9+ tags, and while that's a far cry from most, I don't see why state level or sub-state specific Wikiproject's should be removing other projects. Jim's removal of those tags was exactly the correct thing to do. WikiProject USA should only be tagging those articles which are specifically about the country as a whole, and not usurping the tagging of state projects. To tag everything that has anything' to do with any part of the US would bloat Wikiproject USA unnecessarily, and create an untenable situation. This was one of the things that Kumioko started, and he was dead wrong to do so. There are more than enough subjects and articles which are about the US as a whole and would not be tagged by any state or city project - stick with those, since there is absolutely no consensus in the wider Wikipedia community for such hogginess on the part of WPUSA. Consensus has long been that articles in WP:USA are in the United States and need not have national significance and Kumioko obviously didn't make the situation. I didn't make 300,000 tags. WP:USA has 360,000+ articles and when I remove something I am told "don't remove that". I cleaned it up. I'll explore more options with the group. If an article is in a project such as New York City, and NYC as a project is already included in the United States as a project, then there is no need to add a tag to an article talk page saying article is in USA project -- is this the logic -- if so then Jim's choices were correct imo.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 14:09, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

But it is not in the USA project. Many dozens of Wikiprojects do report to WP:USA with the integrated banner, but NYC does not. WP:WPBIO has 1,141,940 articles that it covers and its simply every single tagged person on Wikipedia. MilHist has over 100,000 articles and many many taskforces. Since so many Wikiprojects are inactive or plain dead, the purpose of a larger national one makes sense, especially if the smaller projects do not want to integrate. WP:USA is a really large and complex tag, but MilHist is as well, but both are trumped by WP:BIO's size. Anyways, discussion continues at the project page. It is completely irrelevant whether a state or city project "reports to" or "is within" WP:USA - that was the Kumioko approach, and it's totally misguided. The only purpose for the existence of a WikiProject is to aid in the improvement of the encyclopedia by taking certain articles within its purview so that its members can concentrate on working on them. (The point of a WikiProject is not to create an all-encompassing bureaucracy, or to parallel the category system.) By bringing every single article that has anything whatsoever to do with the US into its penumbra, an overly bloated Project is created, one in which the members can't possibly focus on the WikiProject's contents. It is, in effect, a separate encyclopedia, United States Wikipedia. That's antithetical to the purpose of a WikiProject on English Wikipedia, and if that's what WP:USA insists it wants to do, it should be disbanded as useless. If, however, WP:USA concentrated on those thousands of articles about the US as a whole, it can still be useful to the encyclopedia. Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:49, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
