Bad formatting[edit]

There seems to be a bug with the formatting of Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Current activity. --Salix alba (talk) 01:26, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Physics[edit]

First, get well soon! Second, when you're better, would you be able to provide something similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Current activity for WikiProject Physics? Mike Peel 14:53, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Mr. Bot[edit]

Wow, I really appreciate your contributions to WP:AFC, however, I'd like to point out that for quite some time now, you've been archiving everything off by one day! It appears that someone made a mistake in your coding, and you are placing archives in the current day, rather than the previous day. I would hope that somehow you could remedy this problem. Thanks! Patstuarttalk|edits 19:48, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message. Somehow, I never noticed that. I tried to fix it; we'll see tomorrow whether it works. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 14:14, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Feature request[edit]

If you ever add more features, here is one: track more of the article cleanup templates. For example Turing degree was recently marked with {{confusing}} which does not show up in the daily activity. Of course this is just a wish for a possible feature; the daily update is already great. CMummert · talk 02:36, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm - Turing degree showed up on the second daily update after the tag was added. Whether you changed anything or not, thanks. CMummert · talk 02:52, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To save bandwidth, some sections are not updated every day but every four days. Have a look at the dates with this in mind and it should be obvious.
New cleanup templates pop up regularly and it's very easy for me to add them, so please do let me know if you find any. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 04:33, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is a automated to all bot operators[edit]

Please take a few moments and fill in the data for your bot on Wikipedia:Bots/Status Thank you Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 19:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 02:05, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Automated message to bot owners[edit]

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Also, to eliminate the need to spam the bot talk pages, please add Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard to your watchlist. Future messages which affect bot owners will be posted there. Thank you. --Mets501 03:07, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Expert-subject tag not tracked?[edit]

It seems that the expert attention needed list in Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Mathematics/Lists tracks only the generic {{expert}} tag for maths categories, not the more precise {{expert-subject|}} tag. Is this the case? If yes, would be good to update the bot to include a possibly large number of pages in the list. Stca74 19:37, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This was caused by vandalism of Template:Expert-subject-cat and is now fixed. Thanks for the message. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 02:47, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfC Feature Suggestion[edit]

Hey Jitse, great bot! I had a suggestion for something extra that the bot could do when it's processing the AfC pages at the end of the day. Any chance you could get it to parse the page and replace any instances of [[Category with [[:Category instead? That'd keep at least the archived entries from constantly being in categories they don't belong in, incase we don't catch them while they're on the main page. Thanks! --Maelwys 01:19, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the code so that it makes edits like this one. Let me know if you had something else in mind. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 23:24, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:WPM/CA minor feature request[edit]

When an AfD is closed, can you mark it somehow on the Current activity page? At first, I thought a strike-through would be good, but that might indicate the result was Delete. Perhaps a simple, "result was delete", or whatever. If this is difficult to implement, then there are no worries: there are only a few AfD's listed on current activity, and most are open. The boilerplate div with class including "xfd-closed" should be easy to detect for closure, but finding the result might be pretty iffy other than a string search for "The result was[^.]*" or something, stripping punctuation from the result. JackSchmidt (talk) 04:33, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that would be very helpful. I've actually thought about it before but I never made the time to implement it. At the moment I put any AfD I'm interested in on my watchlist. I'll bump it on my to do list, but no promises. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jitse Niesen (talkcontribs) 18:01, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfC[edit]

Hello, the bot did not do its job at AfC last night. Please could you check it. Thanks. MSGJ (talk) 19:26, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it seems that the whole network was down. No idea what was going on, but it looks like it's fixed now. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 12:18, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:WPM/CA not updated in March[edit]

Howdy, I noticed WP:WPM/CA has not been updated so far in March (but was updated Feb 29). Hopefully it is already fixed, and I just have my timing off, but it seemed like it missed it again last night after you said it was fixed for AfC. In either case, your bot does us a wonderful service, thanks for putting time into it. JackSchmidt (talk) 20:58, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No new articles for several days?[edit]

I see that daily updates of Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Current activity are continuing to happen, but the "new articles" section has not changed for a few days. What's going on? Michael Hardy (talk) 01:33, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

....and once again, no new articles for several consecutive days. Michael Hardy (talk) 23:03, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Query[edit]

I need help renaming about 200 articles. Doing this by hand would take me all day.

Can your bot rename articles, or be adapted to do so?

If so, please contact me.

Thank you.

The Transhumanist 22:42, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I can rename the articles for you, if you give me a list. However, for that many moves I probably need to see some evidence that this has been discussed first. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 11:32, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Defang[edit]

Hi, a quick question. Your bot does an excellent job with the AfC pages. Clearly it is a good idea to replace instances of Category by :Category. I was wondering, though, why templates are defanged? Why is this a good? And was this discussed somewhere? Thanks, MSGJ (talk) 18:30, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was never discussed, I decided it myself. The reason is that some template have categories in them; for instance, stub template put the page in the corresponding stub category.
If you want, I can stop defanging the templates. Then you can have a look and decide what you want. I'm not active in AfC so I don't care. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 20:19, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it makes sense. The only thing is that we have to put the templates back in if we are going to accept an article from a previous day. Ideally they would be defanged after the page has been marked as complete, but I don't want to make more work! By the way, where does this word "defang" come from? Is it the opposite of "fang" :) MSGJ (talk) 22:55, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea where the word comes from, I just copied it from somebody. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 13:04, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yesterday's AfC not archived?[edit]

Well basically, what it says on the tin. As you can see by the page history, the daily archive wasn't done yesterday. Just wondering what's going on. - Toon05 21:26, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I've been wondering as well. I can't find anything so I guess the computer just had a bad day. However, if it goes also wrong the coming night, I'll have to go to the bottom of it. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 22:11, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jitse. I see that the bot does update this page periodically, but how thorough is it? For example, in accuracy dispute, the first article I looked at was algebraic geometry which seems to have the tag removed ages ago. In the technical category, I've noticed something similar. Anyway, I thought I'd ask on what the updating is supposed to do. --C S (talk) 08:43, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Algebraic geometry is there because of the tag at the top of Algebraic geometry#History. The bot looks at categories, in this case at the hidden category Category:Accuracy disputes from March 2008 (and similar categories for other months), and algebraic geometry is in there because of the tag.
I've been having some problems with the category code in the bot, so it's probably that some issues still linger because of that. That's resolved after an update of the pywikipedia library, but now it's taking ages :( It takes more than 24h to go through Category:Articles with unsourced statements (which contains >100k articles) and it costs 100 MB bandwidth, so the library is very inefficient. I killed that bit now. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 15:23, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"On the page move form, a checkbox is shown, checked by default, labelled 'update any redirects which point to the original title'" [1] — I think when your bot moved Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Today to the August 18 archives, it had this box checked, leading to a myriad of shortcut redirects to /Today (WP:AFC/Today, WP:AFC/T, WP:AFC/t) being directed to the Aug 18. 86.44.19.24 (talk) 05:25, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't suppose the bot did anything different yesterday to what it usually does. On the other hand I do know that redirect fixer has been playing up a lot recently. Anyway well spotted 86.44. MSGJ (talk) 05:51, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, looking now at the User Talk history I see it's happened before [2] (not sure why there's a need to remove comments there?) Anyway, I'll go add the __STATICREDIRECT__ to those redirects just to be on the safe side. Thanks. 86.44.19.24 (talk) 09:01, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the note. I don't understand why this issue only surfaced yesterday; as far as I can find out, the bot had been leaving that box checked for a couple of weeks. Anyway, it shouldn't happen again. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 10:28, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletions[edit]

If a new article is created and has one of the math category tags on it, and gets speedily deleted 20 minutes later, does this bot add it to the list of deletions? Remember that last February and March, for about six weeks, there was effectively a policy that if a new article is about mathematics, that was grounds for speedy deletion. Recently there was a minor recurrence (but in that case the speedy deletion tag got removed and the article improved before the deletion actually happened). Is there any way to tell how often such speedy deletions occur? And to which articles? Michael Hardy (talk) 01:59, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Articles will only be picked up if they exist when Oleg's bot (User:Mathbot) runs. That bots runs once a day, so an article that is deleted after 20 minutes will almost certainly not be listed.
The quantity of deletions is immense (the deletion log for the last 24 hours has about 2000 entries), so I don't want to retrieve the text of all deleted articles. Regrettably, I don't see an easy way to find out what you want. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 13:40, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello?[edit]

Is anyone reading this? This bot has done nothing for almost five days. Is contacting Jitse the best way to proceed, or is this page the place to bring the problem up? Michael Hardy (talk) 02:16, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working on it. This page is on my watchlist, which I check every time I'm editing Wikipedia. It's probably best to use email if the bot doesn't work for a couple of days. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 12:26, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Status[edit]

I know this bot has been running for a long time, but it doesn't seem to have a bot flag or to have been approved by the Bot Approvals Group, am I missing some piece of history here. MBisanz talk 03:59, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Archive 3#Jitse's bot, as mentioned at Wikipedia:Bots/Status. I don't see any reason for the bot to have a bot flag given the low volume of edits. Let me know if you need more information. Cheers, Jitse Niesen (talk) 12:31, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, thank you very much. MBisanz talk 12:45, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Missing AfD[edit]

Why isn't The Irrational Number Generator listed in "articles in AfD" on the "current activity" page? Michael Hardy (talk) 21:37, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi: Is it possible to program the bot to order like DefaultSort does? It's a bit strange to be looking up people by first name. Thanks, Ray (talk) 15:51, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Time?[edit]

Jitse, is your bot in the midst of changing time zones or something like that? Michael Hardy (talk) 05:28, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Huh??[edit]

Jitse, what happened with this edit? From the LONG list of allegedly new articles there's no clear way to tell which ones may be actually new articles without clicking on every one of them individually and examining their histories. Nobody can reasonable spare the hours that that would take. Michael Hardy (talk) 04:21, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Checking[edit]

The math current activity was last updated Mon. and it's now Thur. Is the bot working OK?--RDBury (talk) 23:42, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking about bringing that up. I wonder if this is the first time someone's beat me to it? Michael Hardy (talk) 01:56, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
LOL. Seems to be working now anyway.--RDBury (talk) 19:01, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Articles needing clean-up section shows "None" but I know there are at least a few articles with the Cleanup tag (e.g. Coordinate system and Finite state machine).--RDBury (talk) 00:25, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Puzzling edit[edit]

What's going on with this edit? Why is Generalized additive model for location, scale, and shape excluded from among articles on AfD? Michael Hardy (talk) 15:11, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think the problem is that the AfD page was transcluded under its old name, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Generalized Additive Model Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS), in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2010 May 19. I fixed that and hope that solves the problem. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 08:46, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Checking again[edit]

It's be a couple days since the current activity page was updated, is there a problem?--RDBury (talk) 18:29, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

/dev/zero, etc.[edit]

Here is another technical issue for this bot. Michael Hardy (talk) 23:02, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

categories.......[edit]

I just edited generalized quaternion interpolation. It bore the following three category tags but did not appear in the list of mathematics articles:

(I added Category:Applied mathematics, so maybe it will now get added to the list.) I don't recall whether it's this bot or Oleg's that handles this. It seems to me that things in those three categories should appear on the list. Michael Hardy (talk) 15:59, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Current activity featured articles[edit]

The Featured articles section of the WPMATH Current activity page hasn't shown activity since April. But Catenary was nominated for GA last month and Hilbert transform wan nominated for GA in Nov. Is this a bug?--RDBury (talk) 18:40, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New articles neglected[edit]

After August 22nd, this bot has added no new articles to the "Current activities" page. Michael Hardy (talk) 03:23, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No new articles in several days?[edit]

Apparently this bot has been doing daily updates to the "current activities" page, but has added no new articles since November 2nd. Michael Hardy (talk) 22:33, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bot doesn't set bot flag[edit]

Just noticed this on the daily Maths activity post: [3] – I tried hiding bots in my watchlist but this bot action was still listed.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 03:18, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No new articles on current activities page[edit]

This bot has stopped adding new articles to the current activities page. Michael Hardy (talk) 19:10, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That problem was fixed, but today, Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Mathematics/Lists wasn't updated as usual. Is there a problem or is this just a temporary glitch? —David Eppstein (talk) 03:11, 11 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It updated properly today so evidence suggests it was just a glitch. —David Eppstein (talk) 03:25, 12 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Or maybe more than a glitch. Since May 9, we have only had phase 1 and phase 3 updates; the phase 0 and phase 2 updates are all missing. —David Eppstein (talk) 00:36, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just came back from a trip. I got some automatic emails that the job was terminated, so something is going wrong. I'll have a look at the weekend. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 13:37, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. And thanks for maintaining this bot and this page — I find it very helpful. —David Eppstein (talk) 17:18, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It seems the bot runs out of memory in phase 0 and 2 updates. I increased the amount of memory allocated to it; hopefully that helps. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 07:20, 23 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Needing attention[edit]

Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Mathematics/Lists has missed the last two updates (phases 0 and 1), and another one (phase 1) a couple days earlier than that. Bot acting up again? —David Eppstein (talk) 02:34, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Or maybe not. The latest round of updates happened uneventfully. Sorry for the false alarm. —David Eppstein (talk) 02:02, 19 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's been almost three days since the bot updated. Maybe it needs a restart? —David Eppstein (talk) 00:21, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you did something and it worked, thanks. If you didn't do anything and it started working again anyway, thanks again, for running this useful bot. —David Eppstein (talk) 02:05, 14 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bot just cleared WP:WPM/Current activity[edit]

As the heading says Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics/Current activity was just emptied of everything except a few AfDs by the bot. A quick check of the previous day reveals many entries that should still be on the page, but really there was no need to check; there are new articles every day which mean that list is never empty for example.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 01:47, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It also emptied out most of Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Mathematics/Lists‎. —David Eppstein (talk) 01:49, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Had a quick look at the categories and could not spot any potential causes such as recent changes - I’m assuming it would have to be something to do with the top level category, basically Category:Mathematics, to remove every article from those it checks – but I can’t see any problems.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 01:56, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's updated it again and has added a few entries but only from the last day or two, i.e. nothing from before April 3 (except for AfD entries which are OK and were OK yesterday). So still broken really, but hopefully gives some indication where the problem lies.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 02:10, 5 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

After several updates, Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Mathematics/Lists‎ now seems back to normal. At least, it's back to its former length. —David Eppstein (talk) 03:00, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The current activity isn't - it’s on its third day of missing everything before the 3rd of 4th of April. I fired off an e-mail to Jitse Niesen earlier as he's not edited for a while, in case he’s not monitoring the bot or its talk page.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 03:09, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No new articles[edit]

For several days there have been no updates to the list of new articles. What's going on? Michael Hardy (talk) 03:19, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The bot's author didn't respond to the query above this one, hasn't edited since last year and didn't answer an e-mail I sent. If the bot is still having problems we might have to look elsewhere for a solution.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 03:44, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Replacement bot[edit]
