Hello WOSO editors!

What a year to be alive. As usual (but perhaps even moreso since there have been unexpected quarantines), there has been a lot of activity on player, team, league and tournament-related Wikipedia articles with all of the worldwide coverage of women's football / soccer. Great work!

Fall Focus: FA WSL articles

You may have noticed lots of great things going on for the top English league this year: the FA WSL. More (international!) broadcasts, top international player signings, improved media coverage, and increased viewership. Let's keep the momentum brewing, shall we?

Here's a sampling of articles that could use creation, expansion or updating. What will you commit to working on?

Historical Topics

See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Women's football task force/Initiatives/FA WSL to collaborate and organize with other editors.

Every little bit helps! Thanks for your contributions!

Did you know...

WP:GNG takes precedence over WP:NFOOTY (which only includes the players in two currently active women's leagues)? Often times there is enough media coverage that meets WP:GNG or other notability guidelines. For more information, see WP:WOSO#Notability and be sure to tag the new article talk page with: {{WP Women's sport|footy=yes}}

List of Monogatari novels revert

Hi ! My apologies, I guess that edit did look suspicious since I haven't provided an explanation for it. I've been told by a translator familiar with Nisio's series that this kanji likely did not mean "English" here, but was instead short for the word for "Hero" which is used to refer to Sorakara Kuu, the character from Densetsu Series who appears in that story. I simply meant to correct that mistake. Sorry for the inconvenience. 80.236.123.157 (talk) 11:57, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

reverting my edit

Hello Jkudlick, I see that you reverted my edit on 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification (UEFA), but to be honest: I can't understand why? The hosts of that tournament are not European nations. And the eventual champion is irrelevant, both now and when known, in an article about a qualifying campaign. Regards and looking forward to your reply. Dutchy45 (talk) 10:33, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Dutchy45: The last column in that table indicates when the nations which qualify for 2023 previously appeared in the Women's World Cup, and whether they hosted and/or won in those years. Sweden, Germany, and France hosted the 1995, 2011, and 2019 tournaments, respectively. Norway were champions in 1995, and Germany in 2003 and 2007. I reverted your changes because that is a standard table layout for multi-national tournaments such as this. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 02:27, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Consistent display of ISBNs

ToraNeko (talk) 20:43, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings,

As stated in ISBN, the composing parts of ISBNs are variable in length.

Hyphens (or spaces) are be used to show the decomposition into "languages"/"countries", "publishers", etc...

"Larger" languages/countries get "shorter" identifiers/codes: "978-0-" and "978-1-" for "English", versus "978-99915-" for "Maldives". (c.f. [1])

"Bigger" publishers get "shorter" identifiers/code. (c.f. "978-1-" publishers)

Many publishers have several identifiers/codes, which may vary in lengths: c.f. [2] versus [3]

"Consistent display" means removing all separators, which is detrimental to readability.

But, moving the separators to invalid places is misleading (verschlimmbessern)

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

@ToraNeko:The English-language translations of the Monogatari Series novels and of the Bakemonogatari manga use the ISBN format 978-1-XXXXXX-XX-X. The use of that format for all the English-language releases is consistent. When you moved the separators, you actually made them misleading. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 20:54, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jkudlick: Please, read the links provided previously. Publisher Code "647290" does not exist. ISBN is an example of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefix_code

Bakemonogatari volume 9: https://www.penguinrandomhouseretail.com/book/?isbn=9781949980998 => 978-1-949980-99-8

Bakemonogatari volume 10: https://www.penguinrandomhouseretail.com/book/?isbn=9781647290078 => 978-1-64729-007-8

ToraNeko (talk) 00:04, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A similar example, in another field: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Country_calling_codes_map.svg

"+1" is "USA"/"Canada"

"+44" is "UK"

"+353" is "Ireland"

"+440" is not a country. Neither is "+35". ToraNeko (talk) 00:22, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@ToraNeko: I'm looking at my copy of Bakemonogatari Volume 10 right now, and the ISBN printed on the cover is 978-1-647290-07-8. Since that is what is printed on the book, that is the format we use. In the end, it doesn't really matter where the separating characters go since the last digit is a checksum value based upon the values of all 13 digits preceding it, regardless of any separating characters. Be careful, as some people could view pointing at telephone country codes to prove a point as "other stuff exists" or a sign of bad faith. I understand you are trying to defend your stance, so I do not take any offense.
One more thing, since this discussion is regarding article content, the more appropriate place for this is at the article's talk page, not on my personal talk page. I will copy this conversation to Talk:Bakemonogatari (manga); if you wish to continue this discussion, we can have it there where it will also draw the attention of other Wikipedians who work on the article and may have an opinion. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 00:58, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Autoritaryn edits

⚠

Unfortunately you have deleted a image of a stadium in 2022 CONCACAF W Championship, remember that arbitrary edits can be considered an act of vandalism. Please stop, other editors waste valuable time reversing your actions.

You remove some format tools. That's not my personal edition, and i show you to examples below: In 2018 CONCACAF Women's Championship the alienation is CENTER.

As well , Nowhere on the Page was written about the state of Jalisco, so i aded this little information for a firs time in the page. The correct information that i published was correct: In 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup the page shows that they will be held in India (Maharashtra specifically), as well the page shows this example:

Venues

"On 6 July 2021, AFC announced Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra would host the tournament. All matches are played behind closed doors as a precaution due to the COVID-19 pandemic".

So please don't tell me thai i violates WP:NOTTRIVIA...Because i only want to contribute to that page: CONCACAF Women's Championship, :( (sad face) I can DELETE ALL editions, but don't tell me that i violates WP:NOTTRIVIA. I'm not a bad person.

You can visit the help page to inform yourself, and you have the test area to do editing tests. Thank you RS (talk) 21:55, 08 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Closure of Athletics/track & field and long-distance running

I was just wondering how you determined the close, as to me there appears to be a clear consensus in support of it being generally applied? BilledMammal (talk) 00:29, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I reviewed my closure and determined that I had given undue weight to a comment outside the scope of the conversation at hand. I had already dismissed the mentions of other IAAF competitions as WP:OSE, but I continued to consider the question of which athletics competitors are presumed notable, which was not germaine to this subproposal. Thank you for asking how I determined my closure; after coming back to it with a clear mind I saw my obvious error. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 00:59, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for being open to reviewing it. BilledMammal (talk) 01:03, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Results list

Hello,

Hope you are well,

I just wanted to say thank you again for producing that template for club seasons, it is much appreciated. I had tried to create one for national team result pages but with my limited knowledge of Wiki code, I had hit some problems that I didn't know how to solve. I hope you don't mind, but I have copied some of the code from your example to solve those issues and create User:Stevie fae Scotland/Football result list‎. I would very much appreciate any feedback on what I've put together, especially if there is anything I have missed out.

Thanks again,

Revived in 2022 -> Lukas Podolski

You closed the discussion on "Revived in 2022" in the discussion about Lukas Podolski. It shows as if it would be a consensus to call him German in the lead. Doubts, however, remain, and your opinion should only be a voice in the discussion, not a judgment closing the conversation. I would like you to withdraw your opinion as RESOLVED, possibly you did not see a problem in withdrawing changes, because I would like to let you know that in my opinion there is no problem to completely remove nationality from the lead. Please refer to it, if not, I will refer the matter higher. Atlantico 000 (talk) 18:37, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Service Award Ribbons

So I'm a big fan of ribbons for compact award display, and I noticed that you created nice SVG versions of all of the updated service awards, but they don't quite match the size/proportions of the older ribbons (which are still used for all of the barnstar ribbons), nor the shadows, although that difference is less distracting. As someone who has done some image editing but never messed with SVG files, just how much effort would have to go into recreating the look of File:Ribbon.xcf or File:Original Ribbon.png or the like? I'm certainly not asking you to, I'm just wondering if you have a quick estimate of how big of a timesink it would be...or if it's even possible. VernoWhitney (talk) 15:23, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@VernoWhitney: It wouldn't take too much time since those are rather simple ribbons. As long as I have the correct color values and widths of each color section, it won't be an issue at all. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 15:16, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Would it still be easy including the faux textures and shadows both on the ribbon and spilling onto the transparent background? VernoWhitney (talk) 15:19, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@VernoWhitney: If you are referring to the lighter/darker horizontal shades running across the ribbon as the faux texture, that is easily accomplished. I can also adjust the depth and intensity of the shadows as needed. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 15:32, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, I figured the stripes would be easy. I'm talking about the darker muddled area in the upper left and towards the lower right of the ribbon along with a touch of darkness right in the middle of the ribbon. The texture would be the little variations in color within each of the horizontal lines that make it look some sort of fabric, rather than just using a single solid color for each line. I don't think I'm communicating this very well, sorry. VernoWhitney (talk) 15:44, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@VernoWhitney: I understand now. That should be relatively easy with some gradient shading. Let me give it a shot with the existing WP:SVC ribbons and I'll ping you to see if you like the results. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 15:52, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@VernoWhitney: How is this for a quick workup on the "Apprentice Editor" ribbon?
Shaded Unshaded
— Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 01:36, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's pretty good. Even without the "texture", the shadows make it look much less artificial than the default. I may just have to try out Inkscape now and see what I can actually handle on my own. Thanks for your responses and the example! VernoWhitney (talk) 15:36, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2022 FIFA World Cup qualification

Hey, so I just edited 30 minutes ago that the match between Brazil and Argentina has been definitely suspended and I think it was unfairly deleted. I have many sources that verifies what I wrote. Hope it can get reverted as soon as possible. Greetings. Franco el estudiante (talk) 20:48, 16 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Franco el estudiante: FIFA has ordered that the match be played on September 21 as part of qualifying, and we have sources including press releases and the match information page to support that. Question

After you edited the template, this looks pretty weird (too big and the last column is over 3/4 rows) to me. Kante4 (talk) 21:52, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Kante4: I thought the "Latest call-up" column only listed the date and was not aware that it included the opponent or tournament. It's now moot since my changes were reverted (rather than the column percentages being edited to fix it), so now four of the columns will have random widths again. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 23:42, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, saw that. Have no opinion about the other stuff as i lack the skill for that. Kante4 (talk) 18:19, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kante4: I'm working on setting fixed column proportions in my sandbox, and I've got one right now that I think looks pretty good, but I'm using a 1440p monitor so everything fits without wrapping. How does this look to you? — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 21:59, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty good, cleaner. I find the player column and club one too big (rarela a name fits it all) but that's been the case for years. Kante4 (talk) 22:20, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kante4: I think part of the problem is that the header is set to 98% of screen width, so it forces everything else to be huge. I'll throw these values in the header template and if they get reverted, I'll just let it be. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 01:50, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
