Help

Hello, Joe Decker. You have new messages at Joseph A. Spadaro's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
 Done --j⚛e deckertalk 03:09, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Hello. I just came here to ask: "what is the status of the help request on my Talk Page?". I was surprised to see the "done" notation. Please advise (at my Talk Page). Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 16:32, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, yes, I should have closed both, as I took them to relate to the same issue. I'll close it, and of course this is without prejudice to opening a new one. Cheers, --j⚛e deckertalk 17:22, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks. I had asked you to reply at my Talk Page. They are two separate issues. Are you helping with the first issue, but not the second? Or both? Please advise. Please reply at my Talk Page. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:25, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Replied there. Thank you. --j⚛e deckertalk 17:37, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. It was not the help I was looking for. But, I guess that I should be polite and say "thanks". Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:16, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

gradient domain image processing

Hey Joe, thanks for accepting the page I started Gradient Domain Image Processing. I added some picture examples like you requested, they are pretty neat. I was wondering if you had time to give any pointers on how else to make the page better? It's the first page I've started from scratch, so I'm eager to learn. Smitty121981 (talk) 18:17, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

I'll try and take a longer look tonight or tomorrow, but the images are definitely a nice addition, thank you! --j⚛e deckertalk 04:43, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Before I start, in general it looks good, and the article is far past the place where a lot of articles enter the encyclopedia. Thank you! I do have a few suggestions if you would like to take it up a notch, and/or, some information that might be useful in the development of future articles.
First, I might add another sentence or two to the lead paragraph. I'm going to make a distinction here which may be helpful, the lead paragraph or paragraphs are intended to summarize the article rather than just introduce it. MOS:LEAD has way too much information on how we think about leads, but for this particular article, simply providing a sentence saying something about the fact that the technique has application in a number of image processing tasks, such as (then list three important ones.) I don't know that the clarifying example really needs to be summarized in the lead, but that one addition (and you'll probably find a better wording than I indicated here), ... might be a small improvement.
There is nothing wrong in policy with the way you've handled references, but particularly for any articles you might consider going forward, I do have a recommendation. We have a bunch of citation formatting macros. They are kind of a pain to use by hand, but there are two different ways you can make use of automation that can make their use easier. The technique I use is the WP:REFTOOLBAR, and if you read that page, I configure it to use the 1.x Toolbar settings. That I use an old version may seem paradoxical, but one of the features it has is fill in by DOI. In other words, by using that toolbar, you can hit the "cite" button, tell it your doing a journal, enter a DOI, press a button, and have a full cite generated from that information. The 1.x toolbar can also autofill from Google Book URLs (in cite book) and New York Times URLs (in cite news). Handy! And even for those where autofill isn't present, having a form to fill in the various fields is handy. And you tend to get wikilinks to journal names, and URLs to the papers (even if they're paywalled) that way too, which is always nice.
If you would like more feedback (and to be clear, I spend a lot more time doing "article triage' than any sort of delicate literary neurosurgery), I have a couple suggestions too. Subject matter experts, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer science are available on many topics and often have experience on the specific issues that crop up particular types of articles, and how to approach them. For feedback on writing in general and Wikipedia style issues, Wikipedia:Peer review is an interesting but understaffed process as well. And Wikipedia:Good article criteria, which relates to a process we use to identify the strongest articles on wikipedia, may provide a useful checklist of things to think about in writing articles. I wouldn't suggest immediately trying to nominate this for "Good Article" status, but the checklist, I have found, is a very useful list of things to consider. --j⚛e deckertalk 17:59, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks so much! That was very helpful and encouraging. Smitty121981 (talk) 17:44, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Thomas Solomon

Hi Joe,

Could you please take a look at my edited Thomas Solomon (art dealer) article draft to see if it looks ready to resubmit for review?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ccboehne/Thomas_Solomon_(art_dealer)

If there is any problematic language that you feel still should be taken out, would you mind letting me know? Also, in your mind, have I adequately proven his notability with the press coverage he has received from significant publications/art writers and through the summary of his achievements?

Thank you so much for your help with this.  I truly appreciate it.

Best, Charlene

Ccboehne (talk) 20:29, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry about the delay in responding, to my quick evaluation, that looks a lot better. I'd submit it and get it in the queue, we've got quite a backlog, and it might take some for the next real review cycle. Best, --j⚛e deckertalk 00:40, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Oh good!  :) I'll submit it then! Thank you for all your help and advise, Joe! Best, Ccboehne (talk) 21:09, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Intentioning(band) update

Hi Joe, thanks for your expeditious review of Inventioning(band)! I was conducting the research & preparing to update the draft when I received rejection. That was fast!

Your message said "Editor's summary: Declining submission: subject appears to be a non-notable musical performer or work" so I'm working to strengthen the documentation.

Michael Lewis is the founder of "Inventioning" and a musical collaborator with Jon Anderson, ex-Yes vocalist, so I believe this would be notable. Jon is now forming the new Anderson-Ponty band (Jon Anderson & Jean-Luc Ponty). Michael is leading the preceding musical project titled "Inventioning" and publishing music featuring Jon Anderson's vocals, this is happening very quickly, please see this review, posted today:

http://progarchy.com/2014/08/18/the-art-of-inventioning/

Do you recall earlier this year back – in March to be precise -when there was an announcement online about Jon Anderson getting together with session guitarist/producer Michael Lewis and jazz fusion violinist Jean-Luc Ponty to form a band under the banner of Inventioning? What a wonderful name, I thought. It speaks of newness, development, forward motion and creativity, all of which are the true essence of prog if you think about it. Michael and Jon had started collaborating in January 2007, writing and producing songs, the vision being to one day perform them live together.

This is happening quickly, so I'll post revised text & new reference links in the next few days. Thanks for your help, Chuck Stack, cstack3@uic.edu — Preceding unsigned comment added by CStack3 (talkcontribs) 23:19, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Certainly add links to sources that meet our various guidelines, I'm sorry that they can be difficult to make sense of for newer editors. You may also take a look at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. I'm still working on refining it, but my hope is to provide a more step-by-step (if still not simple) approach to explaining what we need in terms of sources for demonstrating notability. I hope that it will be helpful! --j⚛e deckertalk 16:58, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

HOP Ranch

Joe,

First thank you for publishing my article on HOP Ranch this past weekend. Since then, I have added an infobox; de-orphaned the article; significantly improved the grammar throughout; cleaned up the reflist and the order in which references are listed in the body of the article; added geodata to the page; and added an additional link to the See Also section. I have carefully reviewed the grading scheme of Articles for Creation and I believe I have moved this up to at least Class B, perhaps even Class GA. I'd be grateful if you can take a look and if you agree, kindly upgrade the article accordingly.

Thanks in advance!!

Dave ForneyDnforney (talk) 21:27, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Dave!
First, thank you for the article! It is excellent.
With very very few exceptions, I rarely personally assign 'B' status or more as an AfC reviewer, and never, ever, GA. Any ratings I apply should be thought of as a "minimum", not a full evaluation, and more or less, the Wikipedia community understands that as the proper role of "Articles for Creation".
At Articles for Creation, my work is essentially that of a triage medic. Over 95% of the images I touch are rejected. Yours is clearly better.
For the most part, A/B/C ratings are generally promoted by WikiProjects familiar with the subject matter. As a generalist, I'm often ill-placed to know what is and isn't known about a subject, and topic-specific experts are in the best place to know if an article covers all the significant aspects of a topic. One of the reasons I try and find and assign WikiProjects to given articles is to attract the attention (over time, often long periods of time) of interested editors who are familiar with the type of subject. You might look to feedback from from appropriate individual WikiProjects by asking for comments on their talk pages.
GA is another matter. I'm not much of a writer myself, in 9+ years here, I've had one article identified as GA. You can pursue that too, and in fact I encourage you to do so, but I can't simply declare your article GA. There is a process here which is the only way that articles are denoted GA.
Information about the "good article" process can be found at Wikipedia:Good articles, including instructions for how to nominate your article. The one time I took on the process myself, I had my article reviewed at Wikipedia:Peer review prior to trying for GA. While peer review is not required, I would recommend going through it first, for me, it produced a good number of improvements that I was able apply before nominating myself into the Good Article process. Also consider leaving a note on the talk pages of any relevant wikiprojects and asking for suggested improvements. Once you've incorporated feedback from PR and the wikiprojects, then put yourself in at the Good Article nominations page.
Best of luck! You clearly care about producing a good, solid encyclopedia article, and your efforts here are appreciated. --j⚛e deckertalk 21:49, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, Joe!

I appreciate all of that information. I'm really enjoying learning how the Wiki community works.

Thanks again!

My pleasure! It's a big place, and for the most part, the natives are pretty friendly. Mostly. :) --j⚛e deckertalk 02:59, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Theodore Jarezki article declined

This is the history I have on my grandfather. It is reflected in the book mentioned that was written by Myra and also memoir extracts as written by his son Frank Ludwig Jarrett (who died in 2009) - From these I quoted some facts, as well as the Genealogy book I wrote on their history. I am not a young person and I have so much to learn on the computer. It is extremely puzzling for me to follow your 'easy steps'. It is not easy for me. It was done by trail and error when I originally sent it, hoping that all will be well. Please can you enlighten me in plain language how to go about fixing whatever problems there are in the article to enable me to put this onto Wikipedia. Since I've just had two heart operations within 4 months, I am not always in front of the computer, that's why I did not see your message before. Please be patient. Thank you so much. Marjorie Jarrett

Hi Marjorie,
First and most importantly, please accept my best wishes on the medical front, that sounds terrible. There is absolutely no rush on our part here, anything, well, nearly anything that can be done here can be undone.
Before I get started, though, I've had trouble finding any record of that article, can you point me at the declined draft, or the message you got regarding the decline? That would be a great place to start.
But in general terms, I have to say that I agree with you. I think the essay I wrote actually gets at what we need, but it's still pages of dense material. I wish it were not so, but rest assured that I know our inclusion policies and guidelines are difficult for new editors to learn. Once I have a better idea of which article we're talking about, perhaps I will be able to make some more constructive suggestions. Thanks for your patience. Best regards, --j⚛e deckertalk 02:17, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

not a stub anymore?

Hey Joe, thanks for the previous advice you gave me on the page I started. I was wondering if you could help me again with a different page? Myself and others have added a lot of content to Bowyer–Watson algorithm, so could you look at the page and tell me if it's appropriate for me to remove the stub status at the bottom? It seems reasonable to me but I have never done that before and want to make sure I've got the right idea. Thanks! Smitty121981 (talk) 21:33, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, usually around 500 bytes of text is the cutover point, I've removed the stub tag. You could have too, those are there largely to attract the attention of editors interested in particular topics to entirely fresh ground, e.g., if I make a one or two line stub on an article about a mountain, and mark it as a stub, the folks who enjoy mountain articles may notice it and go "hey, I could write an article on it." Hope that helps! --j⚛e deckertalk 04:17, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Advice to advertisers

I have deleted Draft:Richard Kalich as copyvio, but copied the advice you wrote on it to the article author's talk page at User talk:SP371. I like your wording and might well pinch some of it - I seem to spend my life telling people that WP is not a place for them to tell the world about themselves, their companies, or whatever, For the ones that post copies of their website, I have written User:JohnCD/Not a noticeboard, which I would like to promote to a WP essay some day, but am not quite satisfied with. Comments welcome. The advice from Uncle G is useful to quote: it would be a severe shock to most of our self-promoting newbies, but if they were made to follow it, we would get a few good articles and lose a lot of bad ones. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 17:14, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, pinch as much or as little as you wish, and if you have suggestions for improvements, that'd be great too-I use a keyboard macro expander for that blurb of text, and any refinements would get some reuse. I'll check out your protoessay, too, thanks! --j⚛e deckertalk 17:19, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Raghuveer (1995 film)

Hi, Joe! You closed the AfD for Raghuveer (1995 film), and acted on your close. As the blue link will already have told you, it's back. I of course can't see if its the same content as before, or indeed the same editors. I tagged it speedy deletion as G4 but the tag was removed. What, if anything, is next? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:14, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I checked, it's no better. Speedied. JohnCD (talk) 19:10, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I've temporarily SALTed, I will reevaluate that tonight when I have a bit more time, and if someone has a good reason to revert me on that, I will be more than happy for them to act in good faith in the meantime. --j⚛e deckertalk 19:22, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you both! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:49, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Fabrizio Moreira page

Hey how are you you have tag the page for deletion but the page have reference to large and biggest news papers as references.

also have reference to government institutions about the career of the person i write for so am just wondering if is possible review it or no? any way the tag is from 2013 and is now 2014 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Inuevayork (talkcontribs) 17:24, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

I don't see that that page is marked for deletion, and I have never done so myself so I'm confused by this request.
As near as I can tell, in 2012, I made a note at the article that it required copyediting. I added that because the English in the article is not grammatical, the capitalization is wrong in many places, and so forth. I'm not sure why that tag was removed, but that was the only complaint I've lodged.
There is a notability tag on the article, and you'd have to ask whoever added it if they feel that the article is still of questionable notability in their opinion. I've only taken a small look at the references, but they might have a point. The El Universo references are certainly from very serious, reliable sources. However, they do not provide "in-depth" coverage of Moreira, so they do not count toward meeting our general notability guideline. But I have not attempted to research the question of whether there is, elsewhere, coverage of Moreira. That would require the source to spend sentences, or better yet paragraphs, talking about Moreira rather than simply quoting him.
I hope you find this explanation useful. Best regards, --j⚛e deckertalk 21:13, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

01:10:51, 28 August 2014 review of submission by Fener88

I understand the notability issue and reason for deletion. My question is regarding the wiki page in another language. This page exists in the German de.wikipedia.org, and I would like to know if this is sufficient in establishing notability. Basically, I would like for this page to show up when searching in en.wikipedia.org.

Please let me know if the existence of the page in another language does not mean it can be transferred/translated. Thank you. Fener88 (talk) 01:10, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Different language Wikipedias have different inclusion rules, being accepted into one does not generally make it more likely it will be acceptable in another.
It does seem, however, that it is a signficant company. Are there newspaper, magazine, or book sources which provide in-depth,, independent coverage? That would be all that would be required to have an article here, perhaps two sources of that sort. --j⚛e deckertalk 01:43, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Joe, When you closed the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Matthew Gregory (cricketer) and deleted Matthew Gregory (cricketer), you missed a redirect to the deleted page at Matthew Gregory (real estate agent). AlanS (talk) 00:59, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Well, foo. Thanks for the correction, that should be fixed now. Cheers, --j⚛e deckertalk 01:08, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
No worries. :) AlanS (talk) 03:16, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Talkback

Hello, Joe Decker. You have new messages at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation.
Message added 03:08, 28 August 2014 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Your submission at Articles for creation: Draft:Ducere (August 25)

You declined my article on Ducere. Stating this: "Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed! The submission has not been accepted because it included copyrighted information, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. You are welcome to write an article on the subject, but please do not use copyrighted work."

I wrote the article myself. I have all the websites listed. Please advise why the article was denied. Any help will be much appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anissa F (talkcontribs) 00:01, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

There is a longer explanation at Draft:Ducere that I left at the time.
As you edit to respond to this message, you will notice a notice near the bottom, just above "Save page", which says that "By clicking the "Save page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL with the understanding that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient for CC BY-SA 3.0 attribution." If your material is already copyrighted, you should know that by providing it to Wikipedia you are licensing anyone to use and adapt it, for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. That may or may not be your intent, and of course, I don't know that you are in fact the copyright holder (Let me be clear, I'm not saying you're lying, I'm saying we require a little more than an anonymous account to know that we aren't republishing infringing material.)
If you still believe you would like to donate a license to the copyrighted text, your next step is to read WP:Donating copyrighted materials, that page explains how to proceed, and a few important things you will have to understand before you do. That will address the issue, but it is not my recommendation. Often after such problems are resolved, we find that the text authored by an organization or someone involved with it is not appropriately neutral in its coverage, and that leads to more trouble.
This makes a clean rewrite focusing on what is said about a subject in third-party sources (more newsworthy events, less "mission statements" and marketing language) often turn out to be a more productive avenue.
Anyway, the copyright issue can be addressed as described above, and if you go to the Draft page you will also find instructions for seeing old revisions of the article for your reference. I hope you find this explanation helpful. Best regards, --j⚛e deckertalk 01:11, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

02:23:29, 30 August 2014 review of submission by 64.222.149.253

I, the person who wrote the article Draft:Bill & Ellen Muller Memorial Bridge am also the person who wants to build the bridge. Therefore, no citations are required.

64.222.149.253 (talk) 02:23, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

All articles at Wikipedia are subject to our verifiability criteria, third-party references are in fact required. You will want to find things like newspapers, magazines, and/or books which discuss the bridge. --j⚛e deckertalk 22:14, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
I thanked you for your personal note of explanation to that poor guy who copy-pasted all those bios, but I just wanted to go a little further and outright say, "That was really ice of you, Joe." Thanks for taking the extra step. :) Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:04, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
I never did reply to this, whoops, but thank you!  :) --j⚛e deckertalk 19:49, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Request on 14:15:16, 5 September 2014 for assistance on AfC submission by IsabelSusan

My entry for Articles for Creation for Jonathan Newhouse was declined. I work for Condé Nast International, the company for which Jonathan Newhouse is the Chairman of. Could you very kindly tell me why the article was declined, how to get one approved and a time frame for which this request will be dealt with? With many thanks.IsabelSusan (talk) 14:15, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Isabel,
Articles on Wikipedia must meet our inclusion criteria, if you go to the draft in question, you will see an explanation of what we require within the grey box there. However, I recognize that, as a new editor, making sense of our policies can be very frustrating. You may wish to ask questions about our policies at the WP:Teahouse, which is a Q&A forum dedicated to the needs of new editors, they are a great bunch of people.
I would imagine that Newhouse could meet our inclusion criteria given his position, but the criteria still must be met--we call them "notability" guidelines, but really, they are inclusion criteria, and ones which are based on the existence of reliable, arm's length sources which talk about him in detail. Not interviews, not press releases, but independent coverage. You may also take a look at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. I'm still working on refining it, but my hope is to provide a more step-by-step (if still not simple) approach to explaining what we need in terms of meeting that inclusion criterion.. I hope that it will be helpful.
As far as time frames, we are all volunteers here, and you will often find that it takes days or even weeks for a new draft to be reviewed. This is a problem, but not an uncommon one for volunteer organizations.
Finally, as you work for the subject, please read and understand WP:PSCOI. Thank you! --j⚛e deckertalk 19:06, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

New article

I want someone to make the new article Language Perfect. Can you please do this favour? Note that this languaging website is made in NZ.

Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 05:44, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

I don't immediately see the sort of sources that I could use as references to show that the topic meets our basic inclusion hurdle, which is what we call the general notability guideline. You may be able to leave a note asking some other volunteer to create such an article at Wikipedia:Requested articles, but unless there is substantial third-party coverage of the topic in reliable, arm's length sources, the article can not be created. --j⚛e deckertalk 05:48, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Harriet Kelsall

Hi Joe, please could I request undeletion for Harriet Kelsall. I was unaware sources not online could be cited on Wikipedia but Sionk kindly pointed this out (see below). There are many I can now add. --TJA135 (talk) 12:49, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi TJA, sources don't need to be available online to be cited on Wikipedia. However, you'd need to provide sufficient information for other people to know where to find the information e.g. publication, date, article title, author (see WP:CITEHOW for more detail). It would help the Harriet Kelsall article a great deal if this other coverage (assuming it is about her) was used to build the article. Sionk (talk) 15:56, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi, TJA135, can you give me some idea of what sort of sources you have? You don't have to format them all out for me, but just a dump of a couple of the sources that you believe to be reliable, independent, and providing signficant coverage--with the basic sort of info Sionk has said you'd need to provide for the article? That will help me decide whether I can undelete the article, or create a draft version of it. Thanks, please note that it will probably be 24-48 hours before I can respond next. Cheers, --j⚛e deckertalk 15:41, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi Joe. Thanks. Here's a few links to look at: She was profiled by the Daily Telegraph (one of the biggest papers in the UK) http://www.hkdevelopment.co.uk/media/media/29862. She contributes as an expert on jewelry for other big papers eg the Daily Mail: http://www.hkdevelopment.co.uk/media/media/30009. She was featured by the top two biggest woman's magazines here in the UK: http://www.hkdevelopment.co.uk/media/media/29952 and http://www.hkjewellery.co.uk/images/press/press_cuttings/good_house_keeping.pdf and by the magazine of one of the UK's biggest retailers: http://www.hkjewellery.co.uk/images/press/press_cuttings/Boots_march_2012.pdf. Also: She was chosen by the Institute of Directors (one of the most respected organisations in the UK) as one of 6 women to have "changed the business world" http://www.iod.com/influencing/press-office/press-releases/institute-of-directors-announces-shortlist-of-inaugural-women-changing-the-business-world-award and the "School for Creative Start ups" list her as a business "titan"(!) - http://www.schoolforcreativestartups.com/titans/harriet-kelsall/ Is that enough to sway you? --TJA135 (talk) 11:19, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Hi TJA135,
When I said "the sources that you believe to be reliable, independent, and providing signficant coverage", what I meant by "independent" is sources that are at entirely arm's length from the subject. Press releases and pages from the organization itself are not independent. Generally we are looking for newspapers, magazines, and/or books that have gone through a formal editorial process. I'm sorry that our policies can be be a bit difficult to navigate at first.
You may also take a look at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. I'm still working on refining it, but my hope is to provide a more step-by-step (if still not simple) approach to explaining what we need in terms of sources for demonstrating notability. I hope that it will be helpful. Cheers, --j⚛e deckertalk 19:21, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

This band is notable because it is the sister of Lydia Loveless and because of a recent death. Cheers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whod81 (talkcontribs) 15:27, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi ... are there reliable sources, such as newspapers/magazines, etc., which discuss them in detail? That is actually the basic hurdle of our inclusion (aka "notability") guidelines, if you can point me at them, that might be helpful. Cheers, --j⚛e deckertalk 14:42, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

no problem, there is plenty of press. there were citations on the site. http://www.thegirlsbang.com/?page=press , http://www.columbusalive.com/content/stories/2014/07/24/sensory-overload-the-girls-mourn-the-death-of-a-bandmate-and-take-a-welcome-first-step-back.html, http://www.npr.org/2014/02/09/271517779/first-listen-lydia-loveless-somewhere-else, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whod81 (talkcontribs) 20:33, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

On the face of it, if the discussion closed delete and there is no new coverage since the discussion, it would be inappropriate for me to undelete it, it's my role to determine what the community decides, not to override their discussions. Let me look at it fresh in the morning, and I'll let you know what your options are at that point. --j⚛e deckertalk 06:46, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Joseph Janus Article

Hello, My submission was recently reviewed and denied due to it using work that was copyright. Is there anyway you could tell me which references are copyrighted? I just don't know which citations to take out and not use. Sorry I am new to this. Thank you! LaurenSullygirl (talk) 15:37, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

No problem, the text of your draft overlapped http://about.me/Joseph.Janus quite a bit, with extended identical passages. --j⚛e deckertalk 15:41, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Page on Agnese Nelms Haury

Hi Joe Thanks for your comments. I have added a lot of in text links and some reference sources. Because her obituary wont be out until this Sundays NYT I cant do that link yet or the link to the web page about the new program (its under news embargo). I can make those links live on Sunday. I hope that makes the page acceptable. We figured people seeing the half page ad about the program and her obituary might google her this weekend and wanted to have a wikipedia page for her. Diana Liverman — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dianaliverman (talkcontribs) 22:37, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

No worries, just submit when the sourcing is shored up and another reviewer will be along. You may find that some reviewers have concerns about the use of some types of obituaries as sources--obviously full-article obituaries written by newspaper people from their own sources are generally considered fine, but so many are simply self-publishing by the family or an associated organization, and those wouldn't be okay. Best of luck! --j⚛e deckertalk 00:33, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

23:01:54, 16 September 2014 review of submission by SavageCoco

Surely the reference to Guinness World Records establishes the subject's notability? Could you be more specific as to what more is needed to establish that this game is well known? Its quite discouraging to get knocked back on your first article submission after spending quite some time on it.

Re "Press releases and such are the primary sources here" - there is only one press release referenced which is used to show evidence of the launch of a sequel game. The entire section on the sequel could probably be removed if necessary, but I did not think the sequel would warrant another article of its own.

SavageCoco (talk) 23:01, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Not by itself, no, but another newspaper/magazine/book article and that would likely be found to meet the requirements. The other sources are not really helpful toward meeting our inclusion criteria.
You may also take a look at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. I'm still working on refining it, but my hope is to provide a more step-by-step (if still not simple) approach to explaining what we need in terms of demonstrating notability. I hope that it will be helpful. --j⚛e deckertalk 00:35, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Deletion of Django (2014 film)?

Hello. Please state the reason why the Django (2014) page was deleted. I don't think it failed any criteria. That is a notable film which is being filmed at festivals, and like its sister films, it needs an article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iamcool2014 (talkcontribs) 05:54, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

What we would need in order to have for this article is described in a very short form at WP:42, and in a longer form at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable... generally, for a film, that would often end up being newspaper or magazine reviews of the work, but I suggest you read both those links to better understand what the requirement is that wasn't met, or to see what sorts of sources you can provide that might allow us to reconsider. Thank you. --j⚛e deckertalk 06:16, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Chase Iron Eyes

Hi Joe Decker,

The page for Chase Iron Eyes was deleted on the 14th of Sept. and I am wondering why. Chase Iron Eyes is a noted member of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, an advocate for change, and a board member for the Lakota People's Law Project. Chase has been fighting for the Lakota children and the Black Hills of South Dakota. He is often referenced in the news and has prominent standing in his community. Please undelete! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kimberlywein (talkcontribs) 17:53, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Kimberlywein,
The biography was deleted after the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chase Iron Eyes, which is probably hard to make sense of with our abbreviations and maze-like policies. More or less, the editors participating there wanted to see multiple reliable sources independent of Chase Iron Eyes which discuss him in detail. I've tried to write an essay about what all the "ifs ands and buts" of our policies around that look like, you can see that at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. The four editors participating seemed to feel that such sources didn't exist, but it's possible they relied on what was in the article and neglected to see what they could find themselves by looking. I will take a look tonight or tomorrow for such sources and reply further here. --j⚛e deckertalk 19:28, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
Hello again,
I made an attempt earlier today to dig up what I could, and while he has been quoted many times, and while he has been mentioned in regards to his LPLP work many times, there are not multiple pieces which are biographical about him, and that makes meeting our inclusion criteria difficult. At this point I am unable to restore the article on my own. If you feel that I have made an error under our policies, you can appeal my decision at our deletion review process, and I will have no complaints if you do that, my only concern here is getting the right answer under our policies. Thank you for your patience. --j⚛e deckertalk 02:29, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Chase Iron Eyes page deletion

Hi Joe Decker,

Chase Iron Eyes' page was deleted on the 22nd of September and I believe that he holds enough credible and notable credentials to have a page on Wikipedia. Chase is an up and coming leader of the Lakota people and he has invested his heart into helping his people. He is a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and graduated from the University of North Dakota with his B.A. in Political Science and Indian Studies. He then went on to attend and graduate from the University of Denver Strum College of Law. Chase is a spokesperson for the Black Hills Treaty Council, he spearheaded the fundraising effort to buy back the sacred site of Pe' Sla in the Black Hills. He is a board member and South Dakota counsel for the Lakota People's Law Project, he started Last Real Indians. He was the 2012 recipient of the Native Nation Rebuilder for the Bush Foundation Fellowship, and the list goes on and on and on. If you don't feel that there was sufficient reference to Chase's accomplishments and achievements, please give me the opportunity to list all of the references that I have since compiled.

Thank you, Kimberlywein (talk) 22:59, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Kimberlywein,
I made an attempt last week to dig up what I could, and while he has been quoted many times, and while he has been mentioned in regards to his LPLP work many times, there are not multiple, reliable, independent pieces which provide in-depth coverage of him that I can find, and that makes meeting our confusing inclusion criteria difficult. The specific bars we mean by this words can be a bit difficult to navigate, I've tried to explain them in plain English at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable.
At this point I am unable to restore the article on my own, but I don't have the final say, either. The next step to appeal this is to ask for review at our deletion review process, and I will have no complaints if you do so, my only concern here is getting the right answer under our policies. I sincerely wish you the best of luck. Best regards, --j⚛e deckertalk 04:29, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

It's all still very confusing. So can you just tell me if I need to delete this? Or has it already been deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rebecca Jasmine (talkcontribs) 18:13, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi Rebecca,
It will be deleted, you wont' have to do it. And it is okay for you to try and create an article on the subject, but it is best to write such an article in your own words, summarizing but not copying what other sources (newspapers, magazines and books, generally) say about the subject. You may want to also ask for assistance at the WP:Teahouse, which is a Q&A site on Wikipedia dedicated to helping new editors find their way around this confusing, confusing place. I hope you'll bear with it and join us. Thanks! --j⚛e deckertalk 18:19, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Softdelete?

What do you understand under "softdelete"? As far as I know, delete is always tough business. The Banner talk 19:15, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

WP:SOFTDELETE says, in part:
Soft deletion is a special kind of deletion often used after an articles for deletion discussion. If a deletion discussion sees very little discussion even after being relisted several times, the administrator can close the discussion as soft delete and delete the page. However, in this case, the article can be restored for any reason on request. If your article was soft-deleted, you can request it be restored at Requests for undeletion.
More or less, low-participation AfDs that are closed delete are treated more like PRODs than traditional delete closes.
If I neglected to link the above somewhere, please let me know and I'll correct it. --j⚛e deckertalk 19:16, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Request on 21:07:35, 3 October 2014 for assistance on AfC submission by Virgamesh

Hi

I'm writing because I would like to understand why you decline my article (which title was "Studi d’Italianistica nell’Africa Australe / Italian Studies in Southern Africa" (ISSA)). You said it included copyrighted information: is it because I copied the info from the original website of the journal I was talking about? If this is the case, can I try to create again that page rephrasing the content? Sorry to bother you, I'm a really new contributor. Thank you for your assistance and for any indication you can give me about this page so that I can understand how write it properly.

Best, Virgamesh

Virgamesh (talk) 21:07, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi Virgamesh,
Yep, that's it entirely. You are welcome to write an article in your own words about the subject. Take care to summarize, not just slightly rephrase what is there, and you'll have no trouble with our copyright policies. Thanks! --j⚛e deckertalk 17:32, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Thnx for the review, which went quicker than excpected. I have done some enlargements after it. Serten (talk) 21:29, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you! AfC is in many ways a triage process, but your article was checked for copyright issues, neutrality, the existence and use of sources and so forth, well above what usually comes in through that path. Going forward, you should be able to create articles directly without passing through the AfC process, if you are looking for more detailed editorial feedback I would consider looking into our "good article" nomination process, it's a great way to get deep and detailed feedback from another editor about your article, and it has far higher standards than AfC's "should we delete this?" bar.
If can ever be of assistance helping you, please don't hesitate to ask. Sincerely, --j⚛e deckertalk 17:36, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Youre welcome! I am sometimes, not always, facing rather strong resistance against my edits. I never tried the "good article" process here however, the german one is, based on my former accounts experience, RIP ;) rather ambitious and overachieving. I prefer to participate on DYK and its always good to have a sort of "basic triage" being in place. Serten (talk) 18:08, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

What type of warning should you do if someone reverts a AFD that was decided to be a redirect?

Okay so I caught this a little late-but Lav Bratuša was decided to be a redirect on September 17, a few days later the page creator restored the pre AFD version (with no sources and everything). So I know its late-but is there a warning you could give if someone does that? (I accidentally took it off of my watchlist so I missed it) Wgolf (talk) 15:12, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

I dropped a friendly note at the user's talk page ... and full protected the redirect for a year. I suspect I'll hear from the editor soon. --j⚛e deckertalk 18:17, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Your article was deleted, I see (and I'm sorry I don't recall it, I go through hundreds if not thousands of articles in a given month) because there were no references to reliable sources (generally newspapers, magazines, books) sources in the article all. A more precise indication of what we need in terms of such sources might be found at User:Joe Decker/IsThisNotable. To the extent that you've been covered in depth in newspaper, magazine or book coverage, independently from yourself, and in depth, well, that part should be easily corrected. --j⚛e deckertalk 04:26, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi Joe Decker:

Wanted to point out two articles recently deleted were about films which premiere next week in Las Vegas:

http://pollygrind.com/2014filmfestivalschedule.htm

These were both real movies and they should not have had there articles deleted on the basis the movies did not exist nor had a release dates. Also, both were by a very experienced and well known director, hence notable as part of his 30 year body of work (51 films!).

I'm a bit confused, I asked if you had "a reliable source showing that the film has entered principal photography"?, and you give me a link that doesn't mention the film. I assume I"m missing something.
If this is about separate deletions, that's fine, but it's important to be clear. I should also explain that it is necessary for a film to have entered principal photography in most cases to have an article, but it is not, by itself, sufficient. All subjects must also meet our WP:GNG, demonstrating their notability through in-depth coverage in reliable sources. You may want to also ask for further help at the WP:Teahouse, if you are new here and still trying to make sense of our policies. Best of luck! --j⚛e deckertalk 17:40, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello Joe, I would like some pointers how to edit the article about Dino-Lite, as i have written this quite neutral, not as an advertisement. Dino-Lite is already quite well known as the brand of developer and manufacturer of digital microscopes. Everything i have written is factual but there is no scientific article about this; there are many references and mentions about Dino-Lite by end-users though. If i compare what i wrote to the Dutch page on Nikon, for instance, https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikon_Corporation, that is what i would call advertising text. Also if i look at the references for the article about Keyence (a high end competitor of Dino-Lite), most of their references are from their own website. I look forward to your comments and help. Hi!
Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been out of state and away from the internets.
I'll try and take a look later today, but I see the article is in the queue awaiting a new reviewer. Note that the issue isn't precisely "enough" references, it is "enough" references which are are in-depth discussions of the band from sources which have an editorial process -- profiles in magazines, books, newspapers, that sort of thing. Usually the issue isn't the *number* of references (strictly speaking, two can be sufficient), but the type of sources. Best of luck on your next draft! --j⚛e deckertalk 16:17, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Dino-lite (talk) 19:31, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

I think the sentence from your draft that most clearly demonstrates my concerns is this one, " Dino-Lite has become the de-facto standard for handheld digital microscopes in many fields of use." Now, let me be clear, that statement may be true in some sense. But "de-facto standard" is a positive and somewhat subjective statement, and it is the sort of statement, as such, that should never be put into Wikipedia's voice. If a reliable, unconnected source such as an independent book or magazine mentions it, that can be attributed as an opinion of that publication, but it's not okay for that to be presented as an opinion of Wikipedia's.
Please note that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a forum for advertising your product, service or other business. If you are writing about your own enterprise, it can be quite difficult to write a proper encyclopedia article--and in fact, our policies go out of their way to suggest that you do not try. Please read and understand WP:PSCOI. However, if you do wish to continue writing such an article, here's some advice.
One of the basic bars an article like this is going to have to meet is notability, which is defined under Wikipedia as being shown by coverage in arm's-length, reliable sources. These are usually things such as newspaper articles and magazine articles, and excludes the sort of "reprinted press releases" common to some local business rags--those sources must be independent and reliable.
My best advice is to start over, and then work at finding those sources. Find out what they talk about, and how. And then write your article based almost entirely on those sources. You can use primary sources to fill in entirely neutral and uncontroversial facts (where's the HQ?), but the use of primary sources should be a minimum.
This process is likely to be frustrating for you if you take any other path. Thanks. --j⚛e deckertalk 16:22, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Evina Schmidova

Hello Joe, why did you remove the pages Evina Schmidova. The proposal to delete given only user Vejvančický - failed Czech musician. It was a personal attack. Many people confirmed on Wiki that Evina Schmidova is important photographer. Best regards Karel Stary — Preceding unsigned comment added by Karel Stary (talkcontribs) 08:48, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello! My apologies for the delay in responding. The article was deleted as a result of the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Evina Schmidova. I see four opinions, all of which indicate that the article does not appear to meet our general inclusion criteria for biographies, which you can read at WP:BASIC. I do not see where "many people confirm" the subject is "an important photographer." I don't see any personal attacks, although I can imagine, particularly if you are the subject, that you may hear "not notable" as an attack. It is not, but it can appear that way, in Wikipedia terminology, "notability" refers specifically to our inclusion criteria, such as WP:BASIC, and that can seem like a personal attack, to be sure. --j⚛e deckertalk 16:27, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Request on 19:45:09, 10 October 2014 for assistance on AfC submission by Lisabrandli

Hello - I made edits to the article submission, Bill Lee (Byunghoon William Lee), CEO, Univera, but had not seen any feedback since late August. Please advise as to whether the references I added meet requirements for notability. The articles are all in Korean from Korean media - please let me know if I need to submit English translated versions. Thank you.

Lisabrandli (talk) 19:45, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Oh dear! That article needs to be resubmitted, I'll have submitted it for rereview. References do not need to be in English, although it can be more difficult for reviewers to assess non-English sources. It may take some time for the next reviewer to assess it. --j⚛e deckertalk 16:29, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Sean Alexander's article

I previously contacted you regarding the Sean Alexander article. I have various independent sources on notability, such as articles, that discuss Sean's various achievements and production and songwriting work in the K-pop industry. Do I just submit them to you via this talk page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pattyt18 (talkcontribs) 20:49, 12 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry for the delay in responding.
If you'd like to leave some links here, that's fine. --j⚛e deckertalk 16:35, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Dear Joe Decker, Thank you for taking the time to review our submitted article. Yes, some of the content comes from a copy written source. But, to my knowledge each item was cited properly. Please advise which items specifically you are questioning so we can make the appropriate changes. Thanks so much!

The problem isn't a question of whether it is cited, the problem is one of the legalities of copyright. You will notice that whenever you enter text into Wikipedia, there is a note which reads "By clicking the "Save page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL with the understanding that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient for CC BY-SA 3.0 attribution." Essentially, you must not contribute text which is copyrighted under US law (or text very near it) unless you are the owner of said copyright. There is a process for content owners to identify themselves as such, but it's generally not recommended for text, as often the "written by the subject" nature of that sort of material leaves it unsuitably non-neutral for an encyclopedia. --j⚛e deckertalk 16:50, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

7 Angels 7 Plagues

Hello Mr. Decker -

I noticed, due to mass unlinking of the article title, that 7 Angels 7 Plagues was recently deleted. You were the closing admin of the deletion discussion. I believe I have sources which may be useful in demonstrating the group's meeting WP:MUSIC (e.g.,[28] and [29]), and I requested that the article be userfied to me at WP:REFUND. REFUND asked that I speak with you first about the userfication. Please let me know if this article can be userfied, so I can examine whether any of its previous content and formatting is salvageable. Thanks! Chubbles (talk) 21:28, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello again - WP:REFUND has kindly provided me with a userfied copy of the article and has requested your opinion prior to a move to mainspace. Please see User:Chubbles/7 Angels 7 Plagues and let me know what you think. Chubbles (talk) 23:17, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
I personally think you've cleared the bar there, and therefore I would support recreation. The case is not so obvious, however, that other editors might not disagree. --j⚛e deckertalk 16:58, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Extend PC time? --George Ho (talk) 05:48, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind but I was responding to User:George Ho's request at WP:RFPP. As the PC was due to expire in about 36 hours I have semi-protected it for a month. CBWeather, Talk, Seal meat for supper? 07:11, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, I was away from the internets longer than I expected.... I'll take a look, but I both appreciate you extending the protection and fully expect that an extension of protection is completely appropriate. Thanks to both of you! --j⚛e deckertalk 16:32, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
I wasn't sure how long to go with. If you think it needs longer go ahead. CBWeather, Talk, Seal meat for supper? 19:35, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
Will do, thanks! Again, most appreciated! --j⚛e deckertalk 19:36, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Can you also delete Christian Guerrero?--Yankees10 23:23, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Done, thanks for letting me know I'd missed that! --j⚛e deckertalk 23:28, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

13:43:22, 22 October 2014 review of submission by LeoHeska

Not resubmitting, not requesting a re-review. Sorry, but the process for submitting articles seems to have gotten a whole lot more cumbersome, time-consuming, and bureaucratic. By which I mean that retries, resubmissions, and justifications are now required.

Not into it - don't have the time. This particular work is in fact noteworthy and I don't really feel like rummaging around though various reviews and references to prove that. How much "proof" is enough? No amount of information will satisfy a determined skeptic, and there is no indication in advance that a resubmit will "pass muster." How many references/attestations saying "this is a significant work?" From what sources? Is the New York Times authoritative? How about "The Fifth Estate?" - a defunct underground newspaper? What if Noam Chomsky thought the work significant but nobody else did? Who is to say, or to judge?

Not sure what the increased rigor is supposed to achieve. Are vanity authors spamming Wikipedia by putting links out there to their own low-quality works?

I used to toss the occasional article or change out there from time to time.

It was good while/when it lasted...

LeoHeska (talk) 13:43, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Have you considered simply creating the article rather than using the AfC process? You're autoconfirmed, you should be able to just do so. --j⚛e deckertalk 15:43, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Re-creating article Ghazwa-e-Hind

The concept of Ghazwa-e-Hind is now being discussed in pretty reliable sources like Daily Mail, Daily Excelsior and First Post. I found that Ghazwa-e-Hind and Ghazwatul Hind were previously deleted due to lack of reliable sources. I think the article can now be created. Please let me your view on this. BengaliHindu (talk) 10:26, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in responding. Those certainly appear to be new sources, and suggest that the topic may now meet our inclusion criteria. While I have not considered the matter deeply, I suspect that you are correct. Best regards, --j⚛e deckertalk 16:34, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. I'm going to create the article. Please let me know in case of any concern. Regards, BengaliHindu (talk) 05:23, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Euan MacDonald Centre

Hello, thanks for your comment on my draft page. I've added more links and wondered if you would be able to take a look again to see if it meets the inclusion criteria. Many than thanks! Alogue (talk) 11:30, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, I think you've crossed the bar. I've accepted the article, made a few stylistic tweaks, and added a tag to attract the attention of the folks who help maintain our placement of articles within categories, who I expect should be along presently. Thank you for your contributions! --j⚛e deckertalk 16:45, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Great! Thanks for all of your help, Joe! Alogue (talk) 09:39, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Joe? Crow! Whaddya know? Anyway, can you let me know the author of the article Stefan Siegel, which you deleted at AfD? It has shown up as Draft:Stefan Siegel so for copyright tagging and such I'd like to see if it is the same author. Thanks! CrowCaw 23:24, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

No trouble--Originally Iceman550. --j⚛e deckertalk 20:33, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
