I've restored the article, and added one source to get you started. More would be appreciated, references to your work printed in newspapers, magazines, books, that sort of thing, but I at least wanted to get your article back in place before I took off this weekend.

I'm sorry the policy we have about unreferenced biographies of living people (WP:BLPPROD) seems so harsh, it's less an error than an unfortunate reality of what we need to do to keep some truly problematic content from sticking around the encyclopedia. Fortunately, with regard to that policy, usually a simple "hey, here's a source or two" is all that it takes.

I wanted to know more about this actress, checked Wiki as per usual only to discover that some opinionated and arrogant tool decided that she was not 'noteworthy' enough to warrant keeping a bit of information on her.

Arrogance pisses me off. You have no right to decide what another person should or should not be allowed to research, particularly when the subject of that research has clearly been operating in the public arena.

As a contested proposed deletion, the article has been restored on request. As to the wording of the comment about notability, this comment was written by the editor who proposed said deletion, not myself, and refers to our general notability guideline. As a matter of Wikipedia policy, the proposer was accurate enough, the article in its current form does not evidence notability under that guideline, and should the article not be improved to meet that guideline, it seems quite possible that the article wil end up at WP:AFD in a more formal deletion discussion. Hi Babson, the formatting can be fixed pretty easily, but I do have some concerns about the links themselves as refereces. The second link doesn't appear to actually mention the article subject, so it doesn't address teh deletion rationale. The search results at Kultura are a problem too, in general when we look for references for people we are looking for WP:SECONDARY sources independent of the subject, e.g. mentions of the journalist in other newspapers they're not affiliated with. I'm going to remove the BLPPROD based on that first source, but it's a grey area, and nothing shown here yet actually provides evidence (yet) that Vlad meets the general notability guideline, so if you can point at more secondary sources, that would be helpful. BLP reliable sources opinion, please

I PRODded this article Amrin Chakkiwala two days ago. Two Imagine.in refs have been added and the PROD tag removed. To me, this is similar to use of IMDB, and the clock should be ticking yet. Do use IMDB for proof of someone being in a film or TV show, but think there needs to be more in the way of RSs. Would you mind taking a look since you've had no involvement with the article at all? The network link, the first one, could probably be argued to verify some of the contents of the article, but as it's not a secondary source, I wouldn't consider it to help establish notability under WP:GNG. That's probably good enough to remove a BLPPROD, and it is good enough (in fact, even a passing glance is good enough) to remove a regular PROD. But I think either way the article is not well-enough sourced that it couldn't be deleted, you'd have to follow that up with AfD ... that is *after* you've looked (I presume you already have) to see if other more reliable sources are available. --joe decker ^{talk to me} 18:23, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Can you point out the rule about BLPs

How do you feel about my assertion that the existence of a BLP article is contentious when it's undergoing deletion discussion? I generally agree with User:Necrothesp ""Contentious" refers to the facts in the article, not the question of notability!" However, the whole process of correcting this BLP problem has pointed out the necessity of having at least minimum sources on any BLP. Down to less than 2000 now I see. Are you folks ordering pie for the happy day you run out of BLPs to fix? BusterD (talk) 22:44, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

I think I pretty much agree, I think it's an really cool interpretation of "contentious", but I think that it the policy use of "contentious" was really more a question of verifiability. than notability. But I tend to think of a lot of things in terms of WP:V and WP:NPOV instead of WP:N, at least to myself. I'm far less concerned about notability in the everyday sense ("do I really care who this person is?") than I am about having sources for BLPs that are reliable and sufficient to write a neutral and factual article. Even on a non-contentious individual it's pretty easy for bias to slip just because of the accident of what details got wrote about, the "multiple" clause in WP:GNG helps that.

I do hope we have some sort of celebration (ha!) it's been a long road. There's a chance that I'll miss the day we really get down to as near zero as we're going to get, I've an artist residency in Svalbard for the first two-thirds of September, on the other hand, I suppose that's a celebration in and of itself. :) --joe decker ^{talk to me} 15:41, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

"Desktop Cyber" and user "Cdccyber"

Hi Joe,

You have deleted my article "Desktop Cyber" after a for me very unpleasant experience with another user who has haunted me for days. I am now quite happy with the deletion.

I no longer wish to ever again contribute anything to Wikipedia after this experience and also no longer wish to be in any way associated with it, but found no way of deleting my userid "Cdccyber" and associated talk page.

I have changed my password to some random garbage and have provided no email address so that I won't be tempted in the future to login again, but I really would like my userid deleted.

Hi Tom,

I'm sorry you had a poor experience with another user, and it no doubt didn't help that Wikipedia's guidelines about what articles are/aren't to be kept on Wikipedia are not well explained or well publicized. I can't personally manage the user id deletion, in fact, in general that's not done, but there is a process called WP:RTV which can get the userid renamed to something random (and therefore less associated with your own name). Drop an email to wikien-bureaucratslists.wikimedia.org with the request after reading WP:RTV.

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brandon Wong (ice hockey)

Any chance you could undelete (or at least userify) Brandon Wong (ice hockey)? He actually was ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year for 2006–07 (he was the national runner-up). He also was the BCHL MVP and won the top scorer award (Brett Hull Trophy) while with the Merritt Centennials for 2005–06, all of which should have been sufficient to meet WP:NHOCKEY. Thanks, I appreciate your work. I took a look, and I think I'm going to ask that this goes to WP:DRV. The sourcing you added was primarily or entirely primary sources, so do not go far to establish GNG notability. I'm not sure of the precedents with respect to inherent notability of the Hull trophy and the particular leagues ROTY award. Personally, I will likely support keeping the article, and I've added three secondary sources to the article to support that (all mentioning the co-rookie of the year) but I don't beleive that the undeletion will be uncontroversial, and as a result it'd be inappropriate for me to do undelete without community consensus. If you know of other secondary sources that help evidence notability I'd add them to the article, and *then* make a WP:DRV request. I went ahead and did my due diligence Google digging, and managed to uncover several secondary sources. The only items that are now covered by primary sources are the Brett Hull Trophy, Wong's loan to Greenville, and Wong re-signing with Greenville. *sigh* What I hate about sports articles is that 99.8% of what's on Google consists of team pages, fan pages, blogs, sports "news" pages that just reprint the teams' press releases, facebook pages, et c. And half the time Google News is useless. Sheesh.

Anyhow, after looking at WP:DRV I'm not 100% sure if I want to list it there; after all, it does say that it should be used if I can't resolve the issue in discussion with the closing administrator. If it would make you more comfortable, I'd be happy to drop a note on the WikiProject Ice Hockey talk page to have the folks there take a look at the article. Otherwise, I can go ahead on DRV. Couldn't help notice this get userfied. If I were you I would just be patient. He is 17 games away from meeting WP:NHOCKEY. No real need to create a fuss about it. Just wait until November and move the article back. Most of the things you mention above are awards that wouldn't have made him meet NHOCKEY as the BCHL etc are not a high enough league for their awards to matter. Couldn't hurt. To be honest I find it odd that it got nominated in the first place when they are that close to meeting the requirements. Established hockey editors usually don't find it worth the hassle of deleting it only to have to undelete it a few weeks later in cases like this. deletion of "Desktop Cyber" article

Dear Joe --

I was out of town and unconnected to Internet when the deletion debate and final outcome for the article "Desktop Cyber" transpired. Due to my unavailability, I was unable to provide additional information which might possibly have altered the final decision made on this article. Following the procedure described in "Wikipedia: Why was my page deleted?", I am contacting you as the administrator.

Although the original author of the article, Tom Hunter, definitively stated in his 8/14 "talk" to you that he is okay with having the article deleted, I had a brief discussion with Tom after that communication, and he did not object to me providing you the following information. In addition, I believe that members of our group of Desktop Cyber enthusiasts (such as myself) would be willing to provide independent contributions to the Wikipedia article in the future that might address the conflict of interest observation.

Back in 2004, I wrote an academic paper called "Emulating a Supercomputer - Introduction" which outlined the history of supercomputers, their technology, hardware, and software starting from the first supercomputer in 1963 called the CDC 6600 manufactured by Control Data Corporation. The paper goes on to describe Desktop Cyber and three other projects which are dedicated to preserving the legacy, intellectual capital, hardware, software, and documentation of the Control Data series of supercomputers.

My paper was never published nor made available to the general public at the time, but it was peer-reviewed by a handful of subject matter experts who participate on these projects. Although the paper is now over 6 years old, and some references such as the Top 500 statistics and citation links may be out of date, it represents a point in time reference to an important chapter in computing history, and places the importance of the Desktop Cyber project into perspective.

Although the paper is lengthy, it is an easy read. I myself learned quite a bit about the topic doing the research, and you might find the material illuminating.

The first five chapters give an overview of supercomputer architectures, the history of companies and their offerings, and supercomputer operating systems. The discussion of Desktop Cyber begins with Chapter 6. Reading this paper may give you a better understanding of the importance of Desktop Cyber and other projects like it. I hope that it may encourage you to reconsider the decision to delete the "Desktop Cyber" article from Wikipedia.

Thanks for your thoughtful message.

The subject was deleted as the result of a community discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Desktop Cyber, it would have to be overturned by a community discussion at WP:DRV, the paper (as neat as it is, and I look forward to reading more of it) doesn't rise to the point where the result of a review would be so obvious that I can simply bypass that step.

The importance of a subject such as Desktop CYBER is not the only factor involved in whether we permit an article on a subject, the need for a breadth of independent secondary source is an underlying purpose of many of our core policies and guidelines (e.g., WP:GNG, WP:RS, WP:SECONDARY, etc.) Certainly another source helps, had it been fully published by a completely independent source it might not have been by itself sufficient to have changed the outcome in the deletion discussion. Of course, there are additional sources listed in the article, and those might help quite a bit.

In terms of verifying older sources that might have expired, out of date sources can often be verified by use of the Internet Archive's "Wayback Machine", I heartily recommend giving it a shot. [2]

Once you have sources arrayed, you're welcome to submit the deletion for review at WP:DRV, but I would suggest reviewing those policies and working to expand the breadth of reliable, secondary sources (check out those policy links above) you present. In my experience finding more such information will be the most effective argument you can make.

I should add that I will, in the next few days, be away-from-keyboard up in the arctic, I hope to have some access but may be erratic or unavailable until late September. This will probably preclude me from participating much in the eventual review, but you should be able to get substantial feedback on what sources you array from other edtiors at WP:DRV.

Thanks for your quick reply. You have offered some very specific and constructive suggestions. As I review them and also compare the original "Desktop Cyber" (dtcyber) article with an existing one called "SIMH" that describes a similar project, I see some potential deficiencies with the dtcyber article:

1. the original contributor of SIMH was an enthusiast/user, not the original author

2. the primary resource was an independent verifiable source of an article published in a major technical journal, whereas dtcyber had none

3. the external links included verifiable references documenting activity, repositories, and other articles that were from independent sources whereas dtcyber did not

It seems to me that it would be easier to contribute a brand new article that addresses your observations and my three above rather than initiate a delete-review of an article that fundamentally may not satisfy the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia. What do you think would work better? Start from scratch with a fresh contribution that addresses what we have discussed so far, or try to patch together material needed for a delete-review of the existing but potentially "flawed" article? I personally think that a brand new contribution would be better and ultimately easier to accomplish. What do you think?

Thanks, a rewrite might be a way to go about it, if you think you can make the bar of our notability guidelines. I'd recommend if you do making a userspace draft, e.g., User:LUGRU/Desktop CYBER, and then using that to get consensus for the article. (I'd be wary, btw, of comparisons with other articles, we have many articles on WP that don't actually meet our standards, we don't always get to them/notice them as quickly as we should.)

As far as specific points--I actually think it's easier to write an article as someone who is less familiar about a subject, not more--since articles should be based on reliable, secondary sources, it's harder when we "know something" to remember which things we know vs. which things we have a source for. Deleted Article: Avaloq

Hi Joe

You deleted the article about Avaloq because you - and many others - didn't know about Avaloq. I'd like you to reconsider this deletion and restore the article again. Avaloq is a company which creates core banking software. core banking software basically means, that it (Avaloq Banking System, ABS) does everything from cashier operations (COP) and normal data management (Business Partners (BP), Money Accounts (MACC), etc.) over stock exchange (STEX) to Customer Relationship Management (CRM) in one application. (also it does way more, like output management (mailings), call center, card management, loans, etc.) ^[1] Avaloq has more than 75 banks which are using their software ^[2]^[3] and over 1200 "certified implementation partners" (= you (or your company) payed ~15'000 CHF for a 4 week course and an exam and you become an "Avaloq Certified Professional" and you always go to new courses to renew your certificate ^[4]). those ~75 are some very small, private banks but also some very big banks. it's hard to guess how many people are using that software, but i'd say there are over 100'000 people using it (a normal sized bank has ~1000 employees (including the IT people), bigger banks have way more). also, one partner of avaloq is for example the big company Swisscom through its subsidiary Swisscom IT Services Finance AG which is hosting the IBM-mainframes with avaloq for several banks.^[5]

how do i know this? i'm miself ACP certified and working in a bank as a software developer on avaloq. i would prefer not to edit the avaloq article myself as I would prefer the article to stay neutral (as soon as you're working on an area you can hardly stay neutral on that topic anymore).

First, a pedantic correction -- the article was deleted as a result of this discussion, in which several editors looked at whether the article subject met the relevant Wikipedia notability guidelines. I encourage reading WP:GNG and WP:CORP as they may be of use in understanding the guidelines being discussed. Moving on to the article, you are welcome (and I even encourage you!) to appeal the decision if you can show evidence that Avaloq meets either guideline, in particular, significant (e.g., coverage *about the company) coverage from multiple, independent (e.g., sources which are both independent of each other and from the company, no press releases or reprints), reliable sources (generally newspaper articles, magazine articles, books from publishers with an editorial staff), you have a fair shot at appealing the decision. Because niche software and the companies that manufacture it are unlikely to be covered in mainstream sources but are likely to be covered in specific publications targeted at the banking industry, it may very well be that you have such sources at the ready, if so I encourage you to take them to deletion review with my blessing. I do appreciate your additions, but you may need to go further, after having looked at the provided references, I note that the discogs entries don't meet the usual definition of what are here considred reliable sources due to their being user-edited content (similar issues apply to using Wikipedia itself as a source, and even IMDB as a source is controversial here for those reasons). I won't argue against them at the AfD, but I would suggest that if you can find articles in newspapers or magazines with an editorial staff, or references from books from reputable publishers (e.g., not vanity publishers or people reprinting wikipedia content like Books LLC), your argument in the deletion discussion will be stronge. Sure, the article was deleted as a result of this discussion, which examined whether the subject of the article met either of two of our policies. "GNG" and "NFOOTBALL". The first is policy, WP:GNG asks if the article subject was the subject of multiple, independent, reliable sources such as newspaper articles or books), the second WP:NFOOTBALL is a bit more complex but can be read through that link. The editors who participated in that discussion felt the article met neither criteria, my role in the deletion was to note the consensus and to "make it so" given that conensus. If you feel that the article was incorrectly deleted, that is, if you feel that the the article does meet one or both of the policies listed, then I encourage you to muster sources demonstrating that fact and to present them at deletion review, which will be capable of overturning this community decision if sources warrant. Ok, thanks a lot for clearing that up so quickly and in detail. I realised why the page had been deleted soon after I messaged you.I don't think I'll appeal the deletion as it would be difficult to find any better sources than the numerous ones I already had. However, the one thing I still do not understand are the rules about media coverage (i.e., what sources make a good reference). Jimbo Online, one of the users who proposed Daniel Leadbitter for deletion, said that the article lacked media coverage, yet one of his pages, Chris Brown (footballer born 1992) has very similar references to the ones the Leadbitter page had! Should his page be deleted as well, or is there a reason why my sources were unacceptable (I believe they included BBC Sport, Yahoo!Sport and the Torquay United website). Sure! I'll be glad to give you a hand, I'll need your help too. The biggest issue with expanding an article like that, and this turns out to be challenging sometimes, is finding the right sorts of sources/references for the article. Generally our policies require that we find a certain number of references that are not only "reliable" sources, but that talk in-depth about the person that are written by someone else. This is explained more at our general notability guideline. So, the first and most important task is to dig and to try and find two or more such sources--magazine or newspaper articles, or sections of books, that tell us significant amounts of information about James Brown (but aren't written by him). I've looked a bit, and I won't be able to look more tonight, but perhaps you can try your hand at trying to find some? Jorg Blech Article

Of course I would rather you did not delete the article, but I have no better source of information or reference for it. I used what little I could find on the net about him to write that. I was hoping someone else would pick up the slack -- especially since his books are almost completely unavailable in English although what he primarily discusses is the health care system in the US. In any case, delete it if you must. I just added it because there was no page about him when I wanted to know more :)

I guess I have gotten into the habit of assuming Wikipedia has a page for everything. ;)

Hello! Since I proposed Jörg Blech for deletion, it appears that User:DGG was able to find and add some sources to the article which addressed my main concern, he's awesome that way. I have no interest in further pursuing deletion on it.

As a point of reference, we do have some relevant policies about what articles we do/don't have (not light reading, but WP:V, WP:GNG, WP:BIO and WP:BLP cover the main things that apply to biographies), but short of serious obscurity (e.g., someone like myself) or truly problematic content, the vast majority of us editors at Wikipedia would rather see articles kept and improved rather than deleted.

Samed Yesil

I wanted to look up the Wikipedia article about Samed Yesil, because i am a football enthusiast and interested in the DFB youth work. I have no personal affiliation with Yesil. When i realized, that there is no such article yet, i wanted to create it. When i wanted to write the article i was warned, that you deleted an already existing article about Yesil, because he "has not played in a fully pro competition so fails WP:NSPORT". I want to ask, if this is still the case, or if i may create an article about this player.

Please note, that his matches at Fifa U17 WC were covered in German television (Eurosport and ZDF, Europes largest TV station) for the full lenght 90 minutes of the games plus coverage around the games. In other countries (eg the opponents) his games were probably aired as well. He was the German star striker and won the silver booth in that competition, info which is already included in wikipaedia. During this fifa U17-WC time, he got coverage in basicly all major newspapers in Germany, and also in sports journals where he was still present later (up until now) and gave extensive interviews, eg about Arsenal London wanting to hire him. He has a contract with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, current vice-champion, even though he hasn't played a Bundesliga match yet, he is considered as one of the best players his age. He already is, and even more will be a person of public interest in Germany.

And that seems good enough for me. And by the way, i found lots of articles on wiki about other youth footballers, most of them seem less relevant than this one.

Therefore i would like to have your permission to write the article. If i am at the wrong address here (i am relatively new to wiki), i would be very thankful if you direct me to whoever i have to talk to about this.

Hi Jonathan. First, let me apologize for taking a few days to get back to you.

Let me back up and provide some context, and please accept my apologies if I overexplain. The article on Samed Yesil was discussed as a community discussion a few months back here. My role in that discussion was to read the discussion and determine what the editors who participated in that discussion felt was the proper outcome given our various policies. Given that the discussion was unanimous, I can't directly override their result.

The editors involved felt that the player didn't meet the appropriate subject-specific notability guideline. Usually, players who don't meet that are not "notable" in a Wikipedia policy sense to warrant an article, however, that guideline is in some tension with WP:GNG, and sometimes, players who do not meet WP:NSPORT can have an article if they meet the policy at WP:GNG.

As a result, it is possible that if you can show that Yesil has attained "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject", a phrase of our policy which uses many of those words in a very Wikipedia-legalese sense, that you can get that decision overturned. But that takes more than just saying "there's a bunch of Google results." You'll want to go through those results, looking for sources in newspapers, magazines, and published books, for sources which really talk about, not just mention, the player--preferably articles whose subject *is* the player, not just routine game coverage. "A game he was in was broadcast", even widely, doesn't meet this criteria because it doesn't (necessarily) really provide us editorially-managed information about the player we can use to write the article from.

The Sabotage Times may or might not be considered reliable enough for the criteria (you could ask at [{WP:RSN]]), I would personally argue (not knowing the source, but from a quick glance at their "about us" page that it would be. And it certainly seems to contain some in-depth coverage.

If you'd like to do that and present your "top five sources" or so, I'll be glad to look them over.

It is entirely okay if the sources are in German. While we prefer English sources when they are available (see WP:NONENG), non-English sources are perfectly valid, and I've personally added sources to articles in languages from Albanian to Vietnamese.

To appeal the discussion that I closed, you'll eventually need to take this to WP:DRV in all likelihood, unless the result is a completely foregone conclusion. But you'll want to do the sources homework I suggest above first, and I'll be happy to look through what you want to take to WP:DRV before you do so that you have the best chance of getting the article restored.

Anyway, let me know how I can help. I think there's a possibility there's enough sourcing for this guy from what you've said, and it's worth seeing if there's enough to get this guy restored.

I couldn't help but collecting the references today^^. As i already stated he has had a lot of matchtime coverage on national television, i watched his games but i have no record file of those games to prove that his performance was key topic of the coverage, since he is the main striker and scored the most goals for Germany and the second most of the tournament, it is plausible that the media focussed on him as media usually does with successful goalscorers. Hi Dhara,

Sure, I should be able to explain. I nominated the article for deletion because it did not appear that Mr. Gerber met our WP:BIO or WP:GNG criteria. Roughly speaking, what you'd need to show to demonstrate that I was wrong was to show multiple works that talked about him, that were written by reliable third-parties (e.g., newspaper articles, magazines, book sections) that were not just reprinted press released, that talked about Mr. Gerber in some level fo depth (rather than a passing mention), and so on. This isn't so much a matter of passing some judgment on Mr. Gerber's notability as it is judging the amount of truly independent third-party material we have to write a neutral, unbiased article on him from.

Because I was the only editor to participate in that discussion (something that's quite unusual), the article may be restored, at least temporarily, as soon as you or some other editor requests it, if you'd like me to restore it, please let me know and I will. But unless you also provide a couple sources of the kind I describe, I'll also be forced to reopen the deletion discussion, if you know of such sources, that'd be really helpful in terms of getting the article back in place and clearly in line with our guidelines.

In simple terms, the previous deletion discussion on that article noted that there wasn't enough coverage by independent, reliable third-parties (that is, news articles from newspapers, magazines, etc.) to establish the notability of the band. We talk about "notability" here, but really (and I'm simplifying, but this is the long and the short of it--get a few newspapers, magazines, to write articles about (not just ones that mention) the band, in-depth stuff, and you'll have a reasonable chance of seeing the deletion discussion overturned.
