Missing information

https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/18892 Should be most items not in a self category that don't yet use {{information}}, given that the remainder probably need someone with more expertise in particular regions, I don't see it shrinking very quickly.

https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/18904 is a far as I can determine, all the media claiming to be self-published which lacks information and isn't already tagged for Commons.

You seem to know what you are doing and so any backlog reduction you can apply would be much appreciated..

@Iggy the Swan: Hey there! I've just had the change to start looking at these, and a I took a look at the LinkSearch for AFCB and it appears as if 95% of the links are deadlinks. I generally avoid including links where the majority of them are dead as that would barely pass WP:COSMETICBOT. I know I haven't specified a criteria for links yet, but I will make a central page with a form so it's easier to submit links which meet a specified criteria :-). Would you be able to re-check the links you submitted to ensure that there would be a substantive amount of live links that would be converted to HTTPS? I can do so as well, but I am very busy for the foreseeable future and won't be able to do so until a much later date. Thanks again for your help in making the wiki more secure! That is bad news, I think the ones which begin with 'page' and 'news' are all dead links which IABot fails to archive them. It is probably a good idea to skip that set of websites. Thanks, Iggy (Swan) 20:37, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Also there is some more bad news from the hull city afc.net, most of them are dead links and are probably archived by IABot (or at least attempted). The same goes for the tigers.com version as well. One other thing I have noticed with some of the websites (e.g. the cpfc.co.uk website), when I clicked on one or two (e.g. http://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/crystal-palace-have-completed-the-signing-of-james-tomkins-from-west-ham-united-on-a-five-year-contract-for-a-fee-of-10-million.-3169117.aspx), it goes to a much shorter web address (https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/2016/july/tomkins-joins-palace/) while displaying the same content which supports the references. Some of the domains on the chroniclelive.co.uk have got some minor redirects (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Danny_Simpson&type=revision&diff=834357840&oldid=833430250 Danny Simpson) but some do not (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Aimee_Kelly&type=revision&diff=834358059&oldid=829114769 Aimee Kelly). The MK Dons website (www.mkdons.com) has some redirect links as well a some of the wigantoday.net, the ones that begin 'http://www.wigantoday.net/sport/wigan-athletic/'. Club websites are a bit of a nuicance but I have checked them all (the ones on the talk page and future) carefully, and removed a couple of them. Some redirect links but same content domains I have found with the method you've been doing.

I see that our friend KolbertBot has finished doing this set of links but some of them (e.g. arsenal.com) are still there on the External Links search, although I am aware that many of them are dead links. There should be a way for the bot to only modify https to the ones which are 'alive'. Also I see that the cbsnews.com have also altered web addresses while going to https too. Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

"Not standard use of template"

I wasn't the user who originally added this formatting; I merely restored it after you substituted the template because there was no reason for it to be removed. There's nothing wrong with replicating the colour behind the "soundtrack" text. It's done on plenty of articles, and God knows how many you're removing when you're substituting the template. Not everything has to be "standard", so as I said in my revert summary, please discuss any concerns you have as you were already reverted. @Ss112: Please read the usage of the template, namely : This is an auxiliary template used by the {{Infobox album}} template, as well as other templates used in it and {{Infobox song}}'s |misc= parameter: {{Singles}}, {{Extra album cover}}, {{Extra chronology}}, {{Extra track listing}}, {{External music video}} and {{Audio sample}}. It should never be used on its own. The first parameter should be one of the codes from the table below, representing a type of album (parameter "Type"). I'd say it's an acceptable use considering it's still in the colour field and in the album infobox. It's not being outside of such templates. I'd think if it was such an issue, the article for one of the most popular albums of all time (Purple Rain (album) would have had it removed before now. I didn't add it. @Ss112: That is not what "never" means. The only acceptable usage as described on the template's documentation is when it is "called" by {{Infobox album}}. That is, when the type parameter is set to something like "live" etc, it calls on the /color template and assigns the corresponding background colour. The usage in articles such as Purple Rain (album) is exactly the type of usage this is advising against. Lastly, just because something slipped under the radar before does not mean it is OK to stay indefinitely. If you would like to widen the scope of usage of that particular subtemplate, please start a discussion on Template talk:Infobox album/color. Jon Kolbert (talk) 16:01, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
It's still being used inside infobox album, not outside of it. I don't care about other instances, and not everything has to be "standardised". It's stayed as it is on Batman (album) and Purple Rain (album) for a while. You are disregarding WP:BRD, and instead telling me to get consensus about the use of colours overall when I have just said I don't care about other examples. I'm maintaining the way the articles were. I'm not looking to start a revolution about colour usage, and that's not the way BRD works. The articles stay as is until consensus can be reached. The reverted user who wishes to make the change should seek consensus to make it, not the reverter, regardless of your interpretation of template documentation. Don't tag me again here; I will not check back. If you revert again, I will report you to an admin for disregarding WP:BRD, WP:CONSENSUS, edit warring and thinking your interpretation trumps all others. Infobox album

Why are you changing the infobox template? Has it been thoroughly discussed? What parameters have been deprecated and why? Do upper and lower case matter in the names of fields? Does the spacing between equal signs matter? All of this information needs to be made clear to many people because many people make changes to infobox album. Both infobox musician and infobox album see a lot of traffic, particularly IP traffic. Thank your for your response.

@Vmavanti: Hello - thanks for your message. Specifically, the most common deprecated parameters are "Last Album" "This Album" and "Next Album". These have been replaced with prev_title, prev_year, next_title, and next_year. A lot of formatting errors occurred using the old parameters and the new parameters are much more user-friendly to edit. Namely - you don't need to add bold/italics/ page breaks because the infobox does it all for you using the new parameters. Uppercase/lowercase shouldn't matter, nor should the spacing (within reason). The substitution trick is used to get that cleaned-up infobox with the new parameters all set, and in doing so that would be what adjusts the spacing/capitalization. The spacing/capitalization of an infobox is not the issue, it's the old parameters. Any changes to the spacing/capitalization are a harmless by-product of substituting the template. I need some training myself on the details of image licensing/sharing etc. I think folks attending may be interested in contributing to iNaturalist as well, but the two projects are complimentary, and even more so if the licensing allows images to be shared. @Loopy30: I see a few possible options.
  1. Simplest option (more burden on Commons volunteers) Create a flickr "network", flickr has decent features and allows users to upload and organize quite easily. I would likely share my Flickr ID and ask the other members to join a group so all pictures can be kept track of. There is a tool that allows for easy transfer from Flickr to Commons, so that would reduce the burden on those who may not be so technologically advanced. Problem with this approach is that unless there are detailed descriptions on what is depicted, there's a lot of work on Commons volunteers who may not be familiar with the wildlife of the region struggling to categorize these images appropriately.
  2. Advanced option (less burden on Commons volunteers) Ask them to upload directly to Wikimedia Commons, provide basic information about acceptable licenses and what they mean. Details about categorization, naming conventions, description etc. If done correctly, this would be the most effective way to contribute. If not done correctly, the files will likely just sit uncategorized for years, especially if there is no description on what is depicted in the image. I think a good way of 'keeping track' of these uploads is to ask the users to send us their username, so we can keep tabs on uploads and provide feedback as necessary so they can contribute effectively.
  3. Provide information on both Give information on both of these options, letting the individuals choose which is best suited for them. My main concern with this option is individuals possibly mixing up steps from the two methods and getting frustrated.
I've never met anyone from the group, but if some are interested in contributing to iNaturalist it seems to me that the second option would be best suited to meet the tech-knowledge of the group. What are your thoughts? Jon Kolbert (talk) 21:00, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
Part of the reason that I wanted to attend was to gauge what members abilities and wishes were. I think that being the photography buffs from within the naturalist club, they may be very willing to add meta-data such as date, location, species name, etc. I would like to offer a way that they can "donate" their images that can be usable/share-able by Wikipedia. Tagging personal photos

Hello! I've been slowly going through files on English Wikipedia that have been released into the public domain by their uploaders and moving useful ones to Commons. I've seen a few files now that you tagged as Do Not Move to Commons with the reason "Personal file" (e.g. here). What is the rationale for this? My impression was that personal photos for use on userpages is within the scope of Commons, and so files are better off hosted there since that's what Commons is for (and if the user in question wanted to have those images on his/her userpage across multiple projects, having the image in Commons would facilitate that). @Ajpolino: Hey there! From my understanding, personal files that are only used locally are generally just kept there unless the subject decides they want to use it across multiple projects. That sort of makes sense. It sounds like you're saying they're fine either place, and you feel there is no practical benefit to moving them to Commons (or to forcing them to be retained on Wikipedia... but then again putting the Do-Not-Move tag kind of forces them to be retained here?). For better or for worse, I've already moved some personal files to commons over the last few months. If you feel this is a serious problem, let me know and I'll start the process of getting them deleted there and revived here. Otherwise, I'll just let the matter rest. I noticed KolbertBot had toggled the URL for Marion Weed. This change to https, okay[3]. Then many months later, changed it back[4]. Is this just an occasional timeout which will get changed back again? Do you have article or destination site specific criteria for retries? Do you keep stats on this? Just curious. @StrayBolt: Hello there, thanks for the message. It seems as NYT has since updated their link structure, as there previously were a few issues plaguing the query.nytimes.com subdomain. A portion of URLS for "query.nytimes.com" were changed because they were broken under HTTPS. I will look into sorting this out and updating the links accordingly! @LeadSongDog: I think that's more of a query for Cyberpower678. There was a discussion before about this - I am not sure where exactly it was located, and some articles that were previously accessible (seemingly unintentionally by NYT) were available just by copy-pasting a portion of the URL to a different format. A solution that may be an option to us is to bite the bullet and buy a subscription, download the public domain PDFs and upload them to Commons - could be better than a bunch of editors haphazardly trying to recover paywalled material. wrong change

In this edit it changed 2 inlined code namespaces to 'https', but that's incorrect. (The actual URL it changed was correct, though.) -Pmffl (talk) 21:22, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Actually, it was half-correct on the XUL namespace change. Only one of these URLs was an inlined code example (which should not be changed from 'http', per here.) But the other one was just a URL plopped down in the text, which was a reasonable bot change; I've now removed that altogether, though.
So it seems that the bot could use some more smarts for navigating inlined code blocks and not mucking with "xmlns=" items. -Pmffl (talk) 21:42, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Updated links to articles in The New York Times

As I've added many links to articles from The New York Times as source, i'm seeing many edits updating the links. I've updated many of these manually as I edit the articles, but I'm curious to figure out how you're doing the updates. Alansohn (talk) 13:21, 23 July 2018 (UTC)

@Alansohn: Hello - there's a short discussion on the topic here, but basically I've followed the HTTP status codes for all 20K select.nytimes.com links. Around 12% of them are dead URLs that need to be fixed using the method GreenC describes, and the other 88% can simply be easily fixed by replacing the old URL with the current link under the new format. I'm using pywiki to do the replacements, which is essentially a command-line AWB. It allows me to compare and accept each diff, and usually you can tell that the link is OK by the reference data beside it (article title matches the cite news data etc). June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
  • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
  • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
  • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
  • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
  • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. Hello there. KolbertBot is only active on four wikis at the moment, enwiki, simplewiki, frwiki and commons. If local communities desire to have the bot active on other wikis, they can certainly request it and I would be happy to expand the bots work to other projects. You can for sure suggest new resources or links right here. I periodically add them once I have the chance to do some checking on them to make sure they work properly with HTTPS. The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).
