Order of the Arrow emblem2.svg
Hi! What is the difference with Image:Order of the Arrow emblem2.svg? --Gadget850 ( Ed) 23:02, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hello, when I first looked up the original file (Image:Order of the Arrow emblem.svg), I enlarged it and noticed that when enlarged, the edges were very jagged (similar to when you try to enlarge a small raster image to something much larger). So I converted the original .eps file from main.oa-bsa.org and converted to an .svg and uploaded it. Once enlarged, the new file is smooth (as it should be), like a normal vector image. Unless you are actually looking at the .svg by itself (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/98/Order_of_the_Arrow_emblem2.svg), and then enlarge it, it's possible you won't see a difference, but I'm a bit nit-picky when it comes to those sort of things. I don't think Image:Order of the Arrow emblem.svg was converted properly or something. -- Kaboom88 00:31, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

- BTW, if an image is used in two different article, it needs to have two separate non-free use rationales. I had not done that on some images, and some images were used by other editors in an article without add another rationale. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 01:33, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- Well if that ain't a pain in the arse!! The text is where I first noticed that jaggedness in the original file. I converted it using Adobe Illustrator CS2. -- Kaboom88 01:44, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

- My version had the jaggy text. We have AI at work, but I haven't used it much; mainly for repairing PDFs that will not print properly. I tagged #2 as orphaned so you don't get a bot warning and it will automatically be deleted. Your version is about 100k smaller as well. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 01:55, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- I don't suppose there are easy ways to look up the templates, is there? I was trying to look up how to go about marking the image for deletion (like you already have done), but to be quite honest, while finding articles on Wikipedia is as easy as falling out of bed, finding what you want in terms of a "help" or "how to" is quite a different story. Where for instance, would one find the "di-orphaned fair use" or "Non-free Scoutlogo|BSA" templates (other than on already existing pages)? Granted, I can usually forge through the Wikipedia help pages and find what I need, there are times when I don't find what I know exists. - While I definitely wouldn't mind re-working already-existing articles (including layout, wording or fixing images and the such), my attention-span is not very conducive to outright creating articles or compiling references and the such. BTW, it's been about seven years since I've been in Scouts, so I can't really say that I remember enough to make any significant contributions.

- Ed, wanted to let you know that I had cleaned up the BSA logo as well, however I encountered some problems when trying to replace the original Image:BSA universal emblem.svg. For some reason, in the final revision, the stars on the shield wouldn't show up when MediaWiki creates the preview. However, I uploaded the same exact file again but with a different file name (Image:BSA.svg), and the stars now appear in the preview. Once you get to the actual svg file in your browser, both look the same, but the previews for some reason do not. -- Kaboom88 09:25, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yes- the stars look much better, and Image:BSA universal emblem.svg looks fine to me. Try this: Wikipedia:Bypass your cache (I should add a note to the image page). I would prefer the original name, as I tried to used official names for each image. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 11:17, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
I had the same question, why are you doing this, but now I understand, BUT Gadget850 is correct, if you're uploading the same image in the same format, but your version is cleaner, it's far easier to just overwrite the existing file rather than make a new one and go change everywhere it is used. - On the other hand, only the BSA national logos have been cleaned up. I completely re-did all of these a while back, converted them to PNG and SVG and used full names. The council images are a literally a mess; cryptic names, skewed, background artifacts and the like. Ditto for many of the non-BSA images. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 12:26, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- The only reason I had uploaded the file originally to a different name (referring to the OA logo) was because of the warning one recieves when trying to replace an image. Something akin to making sure you use different names, blah blah. So, as someone fairly new, I didn't know what the proper protocol was here. As I noted above, unless you know how to look for something in Wiki's help section, you can easily do something not within protocol (surely there's a search function somewhere!!). And I totally agree that it's a million times easier to just replace an image than to go through all of the articles referring to the old image and fixing it that way, as you can tell by the 4-5 times I tried to replace Image:BSA universal emblem.svg. I think in the future I'll first try uploading the image under a different name FIRST, then once all of the kinks are worked out, replace the intended image. Once I'm done, I would mark the trial version for deletion.
- Either I can go back and revert the changes referring to Image:BSA.svg or one of you guys can, I don't want to screw anything else up for you guys. -- Kaboom88 18:18, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- We understand. A few things...1) Please join our Scouting Project at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting/Members, 2) Feel free to ask one of us in the ScoutingProject. We have experts in many areas. See WP:SCOUT for starters. User:B is our image expert. User:Gadget850, User:Bduke know a lot too. Bduke, B, and myself are also admins and have admin access. Any time you mess up an image, there is a handy revert link on the image page to take it back to any version. Wonder how I learned that? - I guess I'm not the first to encounter problems, lol! As far as the preview problem, when I first looked at it this morning it looked fine (stars visible and everything). So it must have been in the cache, as you guys are saying (although I didn't clear the cache manually, I think it automatically did that when I shut down last night). To clarify the sandbox.svg, one should upload it and look at the preview, then before uploading another file, revert it back to the original, right?

World Crest
Thank you for creating the scalable version! Since you are good at svgs, would you give a look at the request at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Images to improve#World Scout Committee and see if you could make it svg from the png the fellow created off-wiki? License tagging for Image:World Crest 1957.svg
Thanks for uploading Image:World Crest 1957.svg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
