Leeds beckett Alumni

I added in new alumni references in good faith which you have reverted, could you explain why this was done - happy to learn. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.143.113.172 (talk) 10:40, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

@150.143.113.172: Hello, I did explain in the edit summary, in order to add entries in alumni lists they need to have a wikipedia article and a reference to support their inclusion showing that the person attended the establishment. Keith D (talk) 10:44, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

Cite Date Error

Hi, Thank you for correcting the cite date issue. I used the automatic citation option and assumed that it would format everything appropriately. Is it something I did or didn't do that caused the error or is there something I can do in future to make sure the issue doesn't happen again? DannyHatcher (talk) 14:17, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello, it is a problem with the cite creation option. You can scan the references, once you have used the option, to see if there are any red error messages "Check date values in: |date= (help)" next to the reference text. Another way is to look for the hidden category CS1 errors: dates, but you will need to turn on the option in your preferences to see these. In preferences, on the Appearances tab check option to "Show hidden categories". Keith D (talk) 14:27, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:11, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

A Yorkshire -oriented page! - Please check new refs we added a while ago. Thanks 114.76.40.3 (talk) 08:36, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

Please note the recent edits on the above article and its talk page. Please would you kindly help me? I am having trouble with an unregistered editor who may or may not have a valid point (I don't believe he has, but you are welcome to disagree on that), but he is trolling, hounding and bullying, and will not stop. He has also engaged in an edit war, taking cover in editing as an unregistered user, although he is clearly experienced in and familiar with the workings of Wikipedia.

If we were to ignore his trolling for a moment - the question that he raises, about the use of GRO index references for a biography subject, has already been dealt with in the past,in respect of the above article. You yourself have commented on it, I have added plenty of secondary sources in response to that discussion, and someone then removed the citations tag, saying that the background section now had sufficient secondary sources. The GRO index and Census references are only there as a double-check for the secondary sources, which in my experience are never fully reliable and don't always agree with each other on the subject of bmd dates etc. So he does not need to raise that issue again and he certainly does not need to raise it by trolling, hounding and bullying.

I am wondering if he is in reality a registered user who is currently blocked. It might be worth checking the IP address? Storye book (talk) 15:42, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Update: The above troll, (User contributions for 88.109.209.235) is now starting on my other created articles. See William John Seward Webber. This is worrying, as that article and some others will be going to DYK soon, and we don't want the articles to be unstable right now. Storye book (talk) 15:49, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

@Storye book: - cannot help with checking of the IP address as I have not got the authority for that. If you think that they are socking then you will have to raise a sockpupet investigation request for those with CheckUser privilege to do the checking. It certainly looks like they are an experienced user who knows the ropes. Probably the same person as 88.109.207.96. May be you would need to identify who you think is the blocked user to get someone to do a check. Keith D (talk) 18:37, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, Keith D. I'm afraid that I have no idea of which registered username(s) the unregistered troll 88.109.209.235/88.109.207.96 may have used or is using - so according to the WP:SPI page I have no chance of raising an investigation request. If the troll persists in making disrupting edits, especially on pages which are going to DYK, and in hounding me and so on - would it be possible to block the IP addresses which he uses? Storye book (talk) 22:08, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
@Storye book: - if they are causing problems, then I can block them for a time or indefinitely. I can now block them from editing specific pages, but I have not used that option since it was introduced. Keith D (talk) 22:33, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
@Keith D: Thank you, I would be most grateful for a full block rather than for specific pages, because he has been hounding me, and has shown that he may well continue to search through my own archives and list of created articles so as to find more articles to gripe about - and that tends to result in more disruptive editing by him. Besides the damage to Wikipedia articles, the hounding and goading has been causing me distress and interruption, when I have a lot of work to do here. So yes, please, block him. Storye book (talk) 08:10, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
@Storye book: - I have blocked both IPs for a month. Hope this helps. Keith D (talk) 10:08, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much. That should get us through the several imminent DYKs without disruption, at least. Much appreciated. Storye book (talk) 10:29, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
Update. FYI, the same user has now completely vandalised the same two articles (see Revision history of "William John Seward Webber" and Revision history of "John Wormald Appleyard") under two more IP addresses 88.109.205.227 and 88.109.218.190). He has also left a creepy comment on my talk page (I added the subheading of 4 IP addresses for my records). At least we know now, that if there was ever any doubt as to this editor's ill intentions, all is clear now. Storye book (talk) 14:48, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
Update: FYI, the same user has blanked and scrambled an article again, under IP 88.109.218.190, this time when the article William John Seward Webber was at DYK. Gerda Arendt spotted it and reverted it as soon as she saw it, but the article had already remained scrambled and mostly deleted for 14 minutes while at DYK. (diff). As you will see from the link, the user had used that IP previously to scramble John Wormald Appleyard. Since that IP has been used only for clear vandalism, please could you kindly block it? Sorry to have to ask you again. Storye book (talk) 16:26, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
I have blocked the IP for a month. Keith D (talk) 16:43, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
Thank you. Much appreciated. Storye book (talk) 17:00, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for editing the draft I submitted

Article Draft:Galaxy Heroes Coin

I am not involved with the approval process for draft articles, so unable to help with speeding-up the approval of articles. I could do more editing on article for Manual of Style problems if that would help. Keith D (talk) 18:20, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Photovoltaic power station

I have started an individual good article reassessment of Photovoltaic power station which was rated "good" in 2013 and I think it needs modernizing. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status may be removed from the article. Chidgk1 (talk) 15:30, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Confused about a reverted edit -

Hey Keith D, hope you're having a great day sir :)

I'm not sure if this is exactly how I should contact you - but I believe this is your talk page haha!

I am writing about an edit undo you made yesterday on Bedworth & Nuneatons Wikipedia. You stated I need to be in "mainspace" before making changes, can you clarify what this means exactly? New to this all. Would be great to get my edit verified, thank you!

Best regards, --Jacob M Pérez (talk) 04:32, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello, the link Dylan Davies target is in the draft namespace. You will need to get this approved and moved to Fxtch before you can add links to it from other articles. The draft namespace is used to allow articles to be developed before being published for general consumption, when you think they are ready then you can submit them for consideration for publication as per Articles for creation. Once accepted it will be moved to mainspace and then you can add the link in to the Bedworth and Nuneaton articles. Hope this helps. Keith D (talk) 11:43, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Ah I see, will make sure to get that sorted for you Keith :)

Do you have any suggestions or tips for the draft I linked; anything which may be missing / causing "declination"? Would be a great help, thank you! Jacob M Pérez (talk) 21:45, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello, few minor points to look at.
  1. Be consistent with the templates used for citing sources. At least 1 reference uses {{citation}} while the rest are {{cite web}}.
  2. Date formats appear to be mixed day first and month first format, as a British person I would go with day first format.
  3. Dates are usually given without ordinals, i.e. 2 January rather than 2nd January.
  4. The lead section should summarise the rest of the article, and does not need references. Move the reference down into the body of the article where the fact is discussed.
  5. Punctuation placement - the reference markers should appear after the punctuation.
Hope these help. Keith D (talk) 22:00, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

  • Unregistered editors using the mobile website are now able to receive notices to indicate they have talk page messages. The notice looks similar to what is already present on desktop, and will be displayed on when viewing any page except mainspace and when editing any page. (T284642)
  • The limit on the number of emails a user can send per day has been made global instead of per-wiki to help prevent abuse. (T293866)

Access dates

Hi there. Just want to point out that when you're adding access dates for references, the corresponding parameter's name is usually hyphenated (i.e. "access-date").

Thanks. :) 2A02:8084:F1BE:9180:F0CA:6FA1:9665:3A4 (talk) 13:44, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Can be either, as the deprecation of the non-hyphenated parameter was defeated. I much prefer the non-hyphenated version as it does not wrap in the edit window and is underlined in red by the spellchecker. Keith D (talk) 21:13, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
