How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Date links on The First Take

I noticed your edit on The First Take with the edit summary "Fix cite date errors" because it created 54 links to disambiguation pages. Is a wikilink to the date needed or useful on the list?— Rod talk 17:56, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

I cannot see how it created any links to DAB pages as it was just fixing typos and spacings in date fields of references. The references need date fields and should not be linked. Keith D (talk) 18:09, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
In the dates column the fourth entry has 2019/ & then "12/4" which is wikilinked. & there are loads of other examples. If you go to your "preferences" -> Gadgets & tick "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange" & then refresh the links to dab pages show in yellow.— Rod talk 18:13, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
Having a further look it appears the links were already present in the version before my edit. The links should be removed and the date formatted as ISO dates with dashes rather than slashes. Keith D (talk) 18:15, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Sorry I now see it wasn't your edit - the links were present before but Articles With Multiple Dablinks hadn't picked it up until now.— Rod talk 18:16, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Are simple link-and-title citations OK?

Hi Keith. I am wondering if you could give me any general advice on the above. When I started creating articles years ago, I used this style of citation: e.g. National Portrait Gallery, home page. I don't think the Wiki cite templates were available then. After a few years some helpful editor said I should use the Wiki cite templates, and showed me where to find them, above the edit box. I have used those templates ever since, and have noticed other editors going through the entire reflist of various articles, replacing the simple citations with the Wiki template ones. All well and good so far. But when I tried to encourage a DYK creator-nominator on this template to improve their (occasionally incomplete) citations by using cite templates in their article, they refused on the grounds that citations should be consistent (presumably without regard to quality, url access dates etc.). Was I wrong to suggest that, or is there a WP policy or preference for using the Wiki templates as opposed to that simple link-and-title style? Storye book (talk) 14:48, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

There is nothing to force templates to be used in articles. The style should be consistent throughout the article and show all of the relevant details needed to locate the source, see Wikipedia:Citing sources#What information to include.
Also note -

If all or most of the citations in an article consist of bare URLs, or otherwise fail to provide needed bibliographic data – such as the name of the source, the title of the article or web page consulted, the author (if known), the publication date (if known), and the page numbers (where relevant) – then that would not count as a "consistent citation style" and can be changed freely to insert such data. The data provided should be sufficient to uniquely identify the source, allow readers to find it, and allow readers to initially evaluate a source without retrieving it.

from Wikipedia:Citing sources#Variation in citation methods. Keith D (talk) 16:33, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for that. So I was wrong to encourage a change in citation style. I shall apologise. Storye book (talk) 16:48, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Move a translation from Draft

Hello, I translated the page (already online) [1] and wrote it in a DRAFT: [2] I saw you reviewed it (thanks about that!). The problem is I'm trying to publish the page or move it from Draft to any othet places but I can't manage to do so. Can you help me to understand - or solve - this issue? Thank you, have a nice day,--Luca Litrico (talk) 10:44, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

References

@Luca Litrico: Hello, the reason for this is that you are not autoconfirmed, you need to have been a user for 4 days and have made 10 edits. You have only made 5 edits to date. You can do some tidy-up on your article for this. Suggestions
  1. Tanslate Products in the infobox.
  2. Move the "See Also" section above the "References" section and change to "See also".
  3. Move punctuation before the <ref></ref> tags.
  4. Add |accessdate= to each reference to show when you accessed the website.
Hope this helps. Keith D (talk) 11:51, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
@Keith D: Thank you so much, I will try this! --Luca Litrico (talk) 16:22, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Kiplingcotes Derby

Keith D I have tried to correct an error on the Kiplingcotes Derby Page but it keeps reverting to the original error. I agree that the event was first held in 1519. The following link takes you to my website where I cover the race in full:- http://www.greyhoundderby.com/Kiplingcotes%20Derby%20homepage.html If it was held in 1519 and has been held every year since then, then mathematically the 500th race would have been held in 2018. The 501st would be in 2019 I do not mean to undermine your excellent work, but merely wish for the simple mathematical error to be corrected. By all means contact me; my direct contact is on my site Best wishes and thanks for all of your hard work John Slusar (dashingcustomer) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C5:EE07:FC01:FDF5:31DA:77B7:DCC3 (talk) 14:34, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

If could provide me with any help regarding West Wolds radio to try to get it back onto Wikipedia I'd be most grateful. Rillington (talk) 16:15, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

I have done some tidying of the article but it needs references to support its notability. Keith D (talk) 23:26, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for doing the tidy and any further help would be appreciated. I really do not understand why my references do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. There is repeated changing of words on the page Sadgop. I have edited it again as per the source, but Some editors are repeatedly writing Shudra without evidence, while the sources do not mention Shudra, sir please look at. 2409:4053:2E08:9E6F:0:0:5BCB:6802 (talk) 13:21, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

Date format

User:Millstream3 also undid three of my other edits which set out to make date formats consistent within the article. To save me reverting and starting an edit war, please can you take a look at them and take whatever action you see fit? Diff1; Diff2; Diff3. Thanks. 10mmsocket (talk) 20:57, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

@10mmsocket: I have reverted them all as it left the dates inconsistent and did not follow MOS:DATEUNIFY. Keith D (talk) 21:55, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. I'm glad you saw it my way. 10mmsocket (talk) 22:32, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
Hi both, I didn't mean to cause a problem here. I diligently use ISO dates in references. These are automatically formatted into whatever format the page specifies - e.g. "Use DMY dates" in this case. While the aim is for consistency, it also makes sense to me to follow the ISO standard for this very reason (and references can then easily be copied between WP articles). I won't revert your changes again, however I don't agree with the need to change ISO dates. Best wishes Millstream3 (talk) 09:56, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
No worries. And I do see your point so I'll give some thought to any changes I make in the future. Thanks. 10mmsocket (talk) 13:31, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Spring has sprung at this northern edge of the world (Yorks), and I hope this finds you well? I have just published the above article, which is sort-of-a-bit about Yorks but is maybe a grey area in that respect. Wyon only worked in Yorks in the last 4 years or so of his relatively short life, but he made a contribution there, his really-rather-good memorial is there, in a listed building, and I suspect that he was buried there (not listed in the find-a-grave-type sites, so I still have to check with the Council). So should his article have a Yorks Wikiproject tag on its talk page or not? Cheers. Storye book (talk) 10:25, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Update: He was cremated at Lawnswood Crematorium at Adel; I have requested the grave site (if any) from the Council. Storye book (talk) 11:11, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I am OK, thinking of Easter up in Yorkshire. I have added the Yorkshire project as seams to be relevant. I have done a couple of tweaks to article, hope you do not mind. I would suggest aligning the use of World War I and First World War for consistency. Regards. Keith D (talk) 12:11, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
Oops, I should have remembered that - you said that before. Thank you. I had been thinking of using "The Great War" as that's what Wyon would have called it, but chickened out. And thank you for adding the project banner. Storye book (talk) 13:33, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Keith,

would be great if you could help to clarify the points from the hint box. What I don't understand is that in the German version of the text (I'm German and wrote that piece) there are no such references at all, but in the English there are. There is a link from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobs_University_Bremen , where he is President , so it can't be an orphan. And I cant see which extra citations I could insert, the sources are all mentioned.

Thanks for your help, I am quite new to Wikipedia. Cheers, Rainsel — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rainsel (talkcontribs) 09:27, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello, the orphan tagging by AWB is for articles with less than 3 links from other articles. The article only has a single link pointing to it, may be you could add links to it from other articles? The other tag was added earlier when there were less citations in the article, the only section needing references now is "Academic career". Keith D (talk) 11:25, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Keith,

would be great if you could help to clarify the points from the hint box above the text and, if possible, remove it. In the German version of the text (I'm German and wrote the piece) there are no such references at all, but in the English there are. Orphan: There is a link from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobs_University_Bremen, where he is President, so he is not a lonely orphan anymore Links: I cant see which extra citations I could insert, the source are all mentioned. Thanks for your help which is appreciated,

Cheers, Rainsel — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rainsel (talkcontribs) 11:09, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

I have added a second link for him as an author link, so have removed the orphan tag. The other tag I have moved to section it applies to and changed to be more specific to indicate it is that section that needs the references. Keith D (talk) 21:12, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

Can you remove a new page that I added to wikipedia from the draft list and publish it? Heimusicfan (talk) 09:36, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

Casa Branca page edits

Dear Keith,

I am new to making edits on Wikipedia. I am a historian and very familiar with the history of the Casa Branca temple. Its current high priestess requested that I update the Wikipedia pages about it (in Portuguese and English). I finished making changes on the Portuguese one yesterday.

I was just working on the English version and when I tried to save my changes I received a message saying that someone else was also working on the page and my edits could not be saved. Checking the history button, your name came up. I see you are an administrator. I would welcome your input. Is there a way I can get my changes back? Also, I have added some new sources, and was hoping to remove some that are not very relevant. I have been able to add sources but something is preventing me from removing old ones.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Lisa — Preceding unsigned comment added by L E Castillo (talkcontribs) 13:36, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello, sorry that you hit an edit conflict problem with the page. When you get that message your edits are contained in the bottom of the 2 boxes shown. You can either save the edits directly from there or you can copy the whole box contents, open up a new window in edit of the article and paste it into the edit box. You will have to manually reapply my changes whichever way you go. Keith D (talk) 13:43, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Dear Keith, thank you so much for your quick reply. In the interim, I seem to have lost my way from the page that gave me the option of reviewing the edit conflicts, so I will just go ahead and redo my changes. Anyway I appreciate your fixing the problems in the footnotes!
I am still trying to understand how to remove references that were already on the list that are not terribly relevant, such as the PhD thesis of Carmin Monterssat Soler Cruz (currently note 16). L E Castillo (talk) 14:42, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I do not think there is any way of avoiding this for large articles that use references multiple times or have all the references in the reference section and use named references in the text. The only way to catch it is to look at the reference section after the split and see that error messages are show. Keith D (talk) 20:06, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
