Disambiguation link notification for April 21[edit]

Hi. When you recently edited Ben Eoin Provincial Park, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cape Breton (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

East Bay Hills (Nova Scotia)[edit]

Sorry for mixing up the East Bay in the East Bay Hills (Nova Scotia) article. Considering the title of the article, it was an honest mistake. I just thought the link was wrong, that's all. I seen a red-link and thought I was fixing it. Once again, sorry. Cmr08 (talk) 00:51, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. My lack of clarity led to your misunderstanding, which got me to finally start a page for East Bay (Nova Scotia). Ken Heaton (talk) 01:20, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I took at look at the article, you're doing a lot of good work in creating these new Cape Breton related articles (really impressed with the Low Point Lighthouse). Please don't take offense to my cleanup edits, manual of style touchups are pretty much my contribution to Wikipedia, I only ever created a couple of articles but I plan to start. I usually click on links in articles to see if anything needs touchingup, so that's how I end up editing articles created or edited by the same user several times in a row. Cmr08 (talk) 03:53, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy someone is looking at these things as I put them together. I'm really weak on punctuation and it isn't hard to miss an extra period or missing space either. Thank you for fixing them up. Oh, and I'm glad you like the article on Low Point Lighthouse. It's uncertain future was my incentive for creating the article. I thought some information online might help the local group with their efforts. Ken Heaton (talk) 09:25, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

East Bay (Nova Scotia)[edit]

Generally speaking, an article isn't supposed to go into every single category that can possibly be applied to it, but only into the most specific available categories. It's already in Category:Geography of Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, which is in Category:Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia as a subcategory, and in turn the county category is already in Category:Cape Breton Island as a subcategory — and thus, an article doesn't need to be filed in two or three of those simultaneously, but rather only needs to be in Category:Geography of Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia. It's just like how a lighthouse doesn't need to be filed in both Category:Lighthouses in Nova Scotia and Category:Lighthouses in Canada at the same time — since the provincial category is already a subcategory of the national one, filing it in both categories at the same time is just redundant. Cruising Cape Breton[edit]

Nice work adding the link to Cruising Cape Breton. Those folks have done a pile of work putting usable charts on the site for cruisers to use when anchoring in the many fine areas of the Lake. Regards Aloha27 (talk) 20:22, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism in the Sydney N.S. WP article[edit]

Hi Ken: Take a look at this website, the section that has Sydney's history. Compare the first three paragraphs with the unsourced material I deleted: they are verbatim copies. After going back to the article, I realize the Cape Breton website utilized some of the material from the WP article. Either way, since the material deleted was unsourced WP:VERIFY, and tagged as such for more than five-months, I deleted it because my main concerns were not addressed, and I am not sure what was plagiarized or not, again, due to lack of sources. Other issues with the article mean I could delete almost all the material in that article, since it lacks reliable, inline citations WP:BURDEN, which has been noted for over five-months. If you are willing to put the time in, and get proper citations for the facts that are being put forward in the article WP:GOODREFS, please do so. Please also use proper citation formatting, including the templates provided with WP:refToolbar tool.--Abebenjoe (talk) 21:34, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it should be word for word the same at it is all quoted directly from the wikipedia article, not the other way around. Look at the top left of the page , above the portrait of DesBarres where it says "Excerpts from wikipedia.org:"
By the way, that page you linked, http://sydney.capebretonisland.com, isn't a CBRM webpage, it is a commercial webpage belonging to http://www.morandanmediamarketing.com/ The CBRM's webpage starts at http://cbrm.ns.ca/
I'll have a go at inline citations but it may take a while. Thanks for the link to the Reference Tool Bar. That should come in handy. Ken Heaton (talk) 23:01, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great work Ken, especially with the 2011 Census, when I looked earlier this year, I couldn't find this information. It figures that Caplan actually published a book with some history dealing with Sydney's founding :) Now if the rest of the material in the article could be cited, it would facilitate starting the process to make this a FA status article.--Abebenjoe (talk) 18:33, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm away for a week or so but I'll pick away at this article when I get back. I should be able to find references for most of it. I'll edit what I can't find citations for. Ken Heaton (talk) 16:49, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Much of this article appears to be quoted more or less directly from http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mnh/nature/nhns2/900/916.htm. I can't find any indication on that site that it is freely licensed and several pages (although not the one cited above) have explicit Crown Copyrights. Am I missing something here, or does the article need a major rewrite in order to avoid being a copyvio? . . Jim - Jameslwoodward (talk to mecontribs) 14:19, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, you are correct. I couldn't find a free licence either so I'll delete all that material for now. I may try to do a rewrite of this article when I have time next winter to see if I can put some of it back in.

St. Patrick's Channel[edit]

Hi Ken.

I used the "apostrophic version" for St. Patrick's Channel as that's to where the wikipedia reference was directed. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Patrick%27s_Channel) There is no reference available to St. Patricks Channel. Regards Aloha27 (talk) 15:26, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Aloha27. I hope you had a good summer sailing. I'm not sure how to fix this one as St. Patrick's Channel (with an apostrophe) is not the correct spelling using both the appropriate marine charts and the government sources as a reference. Perhaps I'll just edit the wiki redirect?
That'd be cool. I'll start a wikipedia article on the Channel! (WITHOUT the apostrophe...) Regards Aloha27 (talk) 13:53, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ken, take look at Martin MacDonald article now. I reverted the vandalism or harassment towards you by that other editor. He serves no useful purpose but to nitpick good editors like me or you. Do you think a block or ban is possible? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.166.205.42 (talk) 19:05, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you but Crm08 was actually correct (as he/she usually is), there is a Wiki Manual of Style entry on surnames that I didn't know about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SURNAME#Subsequent_use After you reverted the entry another editor came along and made the same revisions again so it is now written as when Crm08 edited it. I appreciate Crm08's editing of my entries as there are lots of things I miss Crm08 catches. See above in the East Bay Hills (Nova Scotia) entry on this talk page. Someone has to pick the nits or we'd all be lousy.  ;-)
Hi Ken, from your response above, and our previous interactions, I know you wouldn't take this or other edits as harassment. This is just an IP trying to cause problems. The IP also vandalized my user page, and reverted another legit edit I made as vandalism, so I think it's pretty clear that the IP editor was the one doing the harassing. Your opinion of Public Domain on an Admiralty Chart[edit]

Hi Ken, I have never really dealt with the image part of Wikipedia, so there's not much I can really offer here. However, I did read the policy you mentioned on my talk page, and it sounds to me like the image would be in the public domain, but I can't say for sure. I would suggest you bring this up on the media copyright questions page, where editors who deal with this on a daily basis should be able to help. Cmr08 (talk) 20:29, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to community articles[edit]

Hi Ken, I seen your revert in Sydney, Nova Scotia. I don't know where the editor is coming up with this, but I just left him a message asking for sources or even an explanation as to the changes. There now appears to be several editors on to these edits so hopefully they will stop making all these incorrect changes. Cmr08 (talk) 22:32, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please let me know if they respond with any sort of explanation. I'm not sure what they are up to either.
Hi Ken, 30 minutes after I left the message on his talk page about explaining edits, the editor went and reverted the changes in a number of articles still without explaining. It's been a few days now, and the editor is still doing this so I'm assuming the editor doesn't care and is just ignoring everyone else. I received a notice about an ANI discussion regarding the issue and posted there about the editors refusal to explain edits. However, it turns out the discussion topic was a mistake, and it was actually meant to be about the editor adding the General Service Area stub to every Nova Scotia article. Another editor had seen Moka Mu re-adding it after removing it earlier and thought he was the editor adding it to begin with. Doesn't matter anyways, because he also ignored the message about the ANI discussion and has not posted any sort of message there yet. The whole situation is frustrating. Cmr08 (talk) 00:36, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look at a couple of Moka Mo's edits elsewhere and reverted them if they didn't seem correct and were unsupported. I left the following explanation for my revert: (An editor who goes by Moka Mo has made multiple edits (which do not appear to be correct) with no explanation as to why these edits are being made and no references to support the edits. Perhaps Moka could explain why these edits are being made?)
I see someone else beyond you and I has picked up on these odd edits and has started reverting the unsupported ones too.

Need help[edit]

Hi Ken, someone added new content to Sydney, Nova Scotia, and I did the cleanup but I have no idea how to template the references in text. I see that when you added content a couple of months ago to source Jack Yazer, you had no problem with it. Can you take a look, the references are already added to the bottom, I just don't know what to put in text. Right now the text has the full citation. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 04:09, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cmr08, I think I have the references fixed, have a look. It is like playing with a puzzle...sometimes I figure it out.
Thanks Ken, you're right about the puzzle part. I played around with it for awhile but couldn't figure it out. Cmr08 (talk) 06:27, 19 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Cmr08, part of the puzzle is that when using this form of reference, the references don't go directly in the text as usual.
Instead of inserting the usual <ref> bla bla bla </ref> immediately in the text where the reference should be, you insert the template {{sfnp|Author's last name|year of publication}}. You then include the needed <ref> bla bla bla</ref> in a section at the bottom of the article, below "===Bibliography===" in the appropriate part of that section, being "Books & Journals" or "News media" or "Other online sources", etc. The reference included there must have a "| last = (author's last name goes here)" and a "| year = (year of publication goes here)" for the reference to work. Does that help?
Yeah, I know that know. It wasn't actually me that added the references to begin with, but it was me who added them to the bibliography section correctly. I just wasn't sure what to put in the text so I left what another had written until someone was able to fix them. Not sure what the point was to change them to that format anyways, I guess an editor thought they looked neither or something. Cmr08 (talk) 02:41, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Route Halifax Saint-Pierre Ocean Race[edit]

Hi, I'm Paul2520. Ken Heaton, thanks for creating Route Halifax Saint-Pierre Ocean Race!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. According to Earwig's copyvio detector, I see quite a bit of content that looks to be copy/pasted from the sources. Can you please address?

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

So did I! Can you see my Sandbox? I basically took my 37/40 article (as these boats are very similar) and am cutting it down to what I can reference easily. I have to stop for a bit as I have to go work at a theatre this afternoon but I'll get back to it soon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ken_Heaton/sandbox

If you are near any of the fleets, we could certainly use some more photos of the boats to flesh out the article! We seem to have only one here in Ottawa, but I'll try to catch it on camera out under sail when possible. - Ahunt (talk) 18:07, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not close to the Bluenose fleets as I'm in Cape Breton (so 400 km away) but next time I'm up in Halifax or Lunenburg I'll make sure I get a few photos. I'll also try to get into the Maritime Museum and get a photo of B1 on display there.
That would be great, if you have the opportunity. Photos always make articles more appealing for the readers, I think! - Ahunt (talk) 19:25, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

C&C line drawings[edit]

example C&C 43-1

Hi Ken: You have been uploading quite a number of C&C sailboat line drawings to commons under Creative Commons licences, like the recent one shown at right. On each you have indicated that these are your own work and that you are the copyright holder. These seem to be the original draft table drawings from the 1960s and 1970s for these boats and not new works at all. Were you the original draftsman with C&C that drew these line drawings 40-50 years ago, or am I missing something here? - Ahunt (talk) 15:38, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No, I'm not the original draftsman, in most cases the original draftsman of those has died. I'm taking copies I find online, generally from C&C brochures that have no copyright notices (only the older brochures seem to have no copyright notices, the newer ones do so I don't use those), and using those to make copies at lower resolution than the original. I don't use anything from SailboatData as Randy made those himself and there is a clear copyright on those. Does this still put me afoul of the 'derivative works' restrictions? Ken Heaton (talk)
Yeah it does. Even if they don't have copyright notices on them they are copyright drawings under Canadian law and won't enter the public domain until 50 years after the death of the original author (see Copyright law of Canada) or, if the author is unknown, then 50 years after they were each first published. If they are unsigned and were published before 1968 then they would be in the pubic domain already (unlikely, since C&C was formed in 1969) and the licence could be updated to public domain. You need to know the year of publication (presumably the same year as production for each type). Regardless of where they come from you can't put them up on Commons as your own work and under a CC licence when they are copyright and not your work. You could always make new drawings using those as a rough guideline, however. - Ahunt (talk) 19:48, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

tip with references[edit]

Hello Ken. Thanks for your hard work of late on the sailing articles.

Did you know there is a way to have wiki help you to create better reference material? I didn't know this until I was told about a month ago...

In the article drafting stage, the draft is surrounded by a baby blue box. At the top of that box is a toolbar, with several insertion helpers. The first is for Bold text, the next is for Italic text. If you look at the other end of the toolbar, the last entry is "Cite". Click on that and you pull down another menu.

Under the left-most "Templates" pull-down there is "cite web", "cite news", "cite book" and "cite journal". Select any, and you'll be taken to a form-filler helper. The url, title, publisher, etc fields are waiting. Now click on "Insert" or "Preview" and there you have it.

Hope this helps. My Christmas gift to you. Cheers. Magnoffiq (talk) 21:28, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I tend to edit in bursts and then not do any for a while. As a result I tend to forget stuff I used to know how to do. I used to know that cite shortcut was there but I forgot all about it as I hadn't used it much when I did remember it was there... Thank you for pointing it out. I will definitely try using that in the future. Ken Heaton (talk)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. The article C&C 37/40 you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . East Bay Regatta[edit]

I didn't seen any information regarding the event being revived! When is it held? Is it before/after Baddeck Race Week? WMYC wouldn't mind getting that info put on our summer schedule as at present there are only two races (MacDonnell Cup and Wallace MacAskill Cup) of which we were aware. Cheers,   Aloha27  talk  13:03, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

They don't promote it as well as they could. They do maintain a dedicated page on the club's website for information on the upcoming Regatta here: https://www.beneoinmarina.com/regatta2019/ Right now that link only shows the results from last summer's regatta but they will have updated info there in the spring. Cruising Cape Breton usually has info as well, such as this from last season: http://cruising-cape-breton.info/east-bay-regatta.html The East Bay Regatta is traditionally held the last full weekend of July, so a week before Baddeck's Regatta Week starts.Ken Heaton (talk)

Hi, the copyright violation detector flagged a couple sentences/paragraphs in Greenlink Rotary Park Trail System, which I have removed. I have absolutely no problem if you add the information back in as long as the content is original/not copied. Please be mindful when copying/rewriting content so that we can host sufficiently original content, and thank you for contributing to the encyclopaedia. Thanks, I reworded it and added most of it back in with an additional reference. I left one part out as it wasn't really notable.Ken Heaton (talk) 12:16, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ken! We were out on the Lake yesterday and heard comms between the bridge and a sailboat that the bridge was now in service. Good news indeed! Cheers,   Aloha27  talk  15:04, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edit reversion[edit]

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.

I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) If you think my edit was mistaken, please politely let me know and I will investigate. S Philbrick(Talk) 02:00, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

C&C Custom 62 needs update[edit]

Ken, there is an issue with the C&C Custom 62 page. I am the owner of "Pegaso" and have been actually trying to update the site with no success due to WP:OR. Nevertheless, an issue came up with the evidence of the existence of "Jubilation". 1. References [3] and [4] actually point to a NOAA fisheries site, no longer to USCG. This should be updated to be a correct reference as intended in the doc. 2. If you search for ON 1041466 on https://cgmix.uscg.mil/psix/psixsearch.aspx, you get the currently active LILIA entry as well as the old MARAUDER entry. Clicking on the LILIA entry gives the detail page. Hull number JGE620000381, Length: 62.00 ft Breadth: 12.20 ft Depth: 10.50 ft. JGE620000381 is an Alden hull number, C&C would start with ZCC or 2CC. You can look up JGE620000381 on https://hindecoder.com and it will list LILIA as a J. G Alden manufacturer. So these references clearly are wrong if used to evidence this as a C&C 62 and should be removed. 3. The referenced video of "Marauder" is a C&C 62. There exists a sales catalog that was downloadable (I have a copy) of "Marauder" being for sale in Spain through dolphin-yachts.com. The pictures match the video and the dimensions match those of Pegaso. It looks like dolphin-yachts were the original video creators. The sales catalog is written in German. We can probably add a reference for that to comply with WP:OR. "Marauder" is a 61' with raised freeboard, just as "Pegaso" is. They are coming out of the same hull mold as the older 61'. Both are ketch rigged. The book reference [1] states that "Pegaso is the first Custom 62", which would suggest a difference between C&C 62 and C&C Custom 62. The C&C build list, you can see a copy on www.SV-pegaso.com does not list any other 62 ft builds and I suspect the "Marauder" ketch was listed under the project name BRITA for a German customer. 4. The sales catalog for "Marauder" lists the LOA as 19.5 m (62'5") and a beam of 4.63m (15'2"). "Pegaso" build certificate, if we add that as a reference, lists it as 62' 4.1 tenths (4.92 inches) and a beam of 15'1.92". 5. The engines are quite different for both boats "Marauder" was listed with a Ford Lehman and Pegaso now has a Volvo TAMD41 D. 6. "Pegaso"'s USCG ON is 1317466 and active. "Marauder" seems to be registered in Europe.
