Distance error measurements

Hi Ketiltrout. I'd like to ask you not to include error measurements after the star distances when it it already covered by the parallax error. This messes up the formating and I don't believe the parallax error directly translates into a distance error. (For example, 100 ± 10 mas (10 parsecs) is the same as .090&ndas;.110", which is 11.11–9.09 (or 10+1.11 to 10-0.91) not 10 ± 1.) Thank you!!! — RJH 20:59, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for taking an interest in my contributions. Quoting a measured quantity without quoting its significance is a bit misleading, so I'd like not to do it. Can't we change the formatting? Also, that's not a good way to calcuate the error on the distance. These errors aren't hard limits, they're 1-sigma points. So, since distance is:, the error in d is:, so using your example, π=0.1″, δπ=0.001″, gives: , so the proper distance to quote is, in fact, 10 ± 1 pc. -- Ketil Trout 22:09, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for correcting my article! Just a question: in this sentence In 1962, a hundred pictures of Fiume's toured through several German museums, including those of Cologne and Regensburg., I think that the 's should be omitted, shouldn't it? I would say a hundred Fiume's pictures toured.... Where do you come from? --Daĉjoпочта 19:40, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Central Asian geo-stub categories

Hi. I'm concerned to see you've recently created five new categories for geography stubs of countries in Central Asia. New stub categories are only created when they are viable for use by editor - which by long-standing convention is when there are 60-65 stubs which can use the new category. They are then proposed at WP:WSS/P, as stated at WP:STUB and at the top of almost all stub categories. The goegraphy stubs for individual nations are tallied every two to three weeks to check when new categories reach that level. None of the ones you created yet do, and two of them are severely undersized. All five of these new categories are now listed at WP:WSS/D, and it is likely that a couple of them may be proposed for deletion unless they quickly reach the standard threshold for stub categories. In the case of Category:Kyrgyzstan geography stubs, this is a re-creation of a category that was only recently deleted after vote at WP:SFD. Please, in future, do not create new stub templates or categories without first going through the normal proposal process. Grutness...wha? 01:20, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello, when you want to link to the article about something 3D, please do not link to 3-D, as that is a disambiguation page (which nothing should be linked to). Instead link to the one of the options found on that page such as 3D computer graphics by writing out [[3D computer graphics|3-D]] Regards, -- Jeff3000 03:03, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Source question

Hi. I noticed you created the article Sigma Tauri, and I wondered what source you got all that information from. Just googling isn't turning up a reliable source very quickly, so I thought I'd go straight to the author. Thanks in advance for your help. -GTBacchus(talk) 04:49, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing me to the source. I wasn't able to make heads or tails of that site, but I believe that someone with more knowledge than I could use it to find information, and I added a link to the article. -GTBacchus(talk) 21:20, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

International banking

In re: Bank of Portugal et al: In looking over my watchlist, I am pleased by your interest in corporate nomenclature and English translations of bank names, and I hope you are aware that in some cases there are name overlaps between the English versions of a company name and an extant company that could lead to a re-move; just in case it comes up in the future. Although the English names are nice, there do exist cases in which the original name is selected over a translation to avoid confusion. (I am not checking any of these moves, and I am definitely not aware of any such name confusion in these articles at this time.) Cheers. --McTrixie/Mr Accountable 13:19, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Central banks

Hi Ketiltrout, I've noticed that you've went through all the "Central banks" redlinks in Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Business_and_Economics and started stubs. Although your efforts are commendable, "The Central Bank of X is the central bank of X" blurb is not useful at all. Do you plan on expanding these articles? If not, I either have to request speedy deletion so the request links stay red, or tag them with {{expand}} so that somebody will start working on them. -- Emana 20:54, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

List of central banks

As an editor who has been so keen to improve the list, guess you'd perhaps be interested to take a look at user:Huaiwei's recent edits. :-) He insisted the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the Monetary Authority of Macao to be listed under the People's Bank of China, and insisted to spell Macao in Monetary Authority of Macao different from its official name as according to the official website. — Instantnood 18:00, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Roundels

Ketiltrout, mah man!

Thank you for your assistance in plugging in national roundels! I have been trying to follow a policy of using military insignia for military crashes, and national flagicons for civilian crashes - though c.n. 3118, a military Herc flown by an Air America crew (10 April 1970) was a toss-up... I opted for the flag as it was a civilian flight crew.

I hadn't been able to figure out how the describe the roundel svg. image for smaller air arms. I surely do appreciate your help!

An editor has nominated Blaine High School (Minnesota), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Blaine High School (Minnesota) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Last Orders

Hello Ketiltrout. I just wanted to drop a note to thank you for being thorough in fixing the links for the cast of this fine film. Not every editor realizes that new pages will effect other items in wikipedia. When I was watching this in the theatre a few years ago it dawned on me that Helen Mirren and Bob Hoskins had acted together in a film early in both of their careers. It is The Long Good Friday. Now you probably were already aware of this but, as several friends that have watched these two together have thanked me for recommending them, I thought I would pass the info along just in case. Thanks again and happy editing. MarnetteD | Talk 21:39, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Uzel (disambiguation), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Staffordboy (talkcontribs) 21:37, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

It's a pretty standard disambiguation page. Could you elaborate on your concerns?—Ketil Trout (<><!) 21:46, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
I tagged it for deletion because not only it was a stub, there was only 1 link. If you plan to add more links to the page, i will remove the tag.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Staffordboy (talkcontribs) 21:51, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Little context in Dealer's Choice (book)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Dealer's Choice (book), by 2005, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Dealer's Choice (book) is very short providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Dealer's Choice (book), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Dealer's Choice (book) itself. DuMont disambiguation merge

Hi Ketiltrout!

Thanks for your edits to Wikipedia. Please make sure that when you merge articles or disambiguation pages together that you are actually merging content from both pages. Here you "merged" Dumont and DuMont by blanking and redirecting DuMont to Dumont without adding the content at DuMont to Dumont. You changed a single word at Dumont without incorporating anything from DuMont into Dumont. That's not a merger of content. The content that was in DuMont but not included in Dumont was effectively edited out of the encyclopedia when you did that. I have since added the remaining content from DuMont into Dumont. Best wishes and happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 22:39, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Ack. Thanks for catching (and correcting) that omission.—Ketil Trout (<><!) 20:30, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
No problem. I just wanted to make sure you weren't "merging" articles like that all the time. Happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 21:16, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Why the succession box?

Why the sucession box on John Frederic Daniell? Just how are these people predecessors or successors? Gauss was a mathemetician, not a chemist! Please explain. --Wtshymanski 16:51, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

They are all natural scientists. But in this case, they're successors in that they were awarded the Copley Medal in successive years. So, they're were leaders in the natural sciences of their age, at least in the opinion of the Royal Society.—Ketil Trout (<><!) 19:42, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
I think it's an odd way to organize scientists. Are the Nobel winners organized the same way? King Dimwitt Flathead IX is an obvious natural sucessor to King Dimwitt Flathead VIII; but I'm not sure what I'm learning from a list of scientific beauty-contest winners; the succession says more about the judges than about the scientists. Am I going to get a coherent picture of the evolution of scientific thought by following the chain of successors? And I notice the chain *branches* - which branch is more relevant? Faraday or Gauss? --Wtshymanski 20:48, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi. It seems like you have an interest in ambient music. I wonder if you wouldn't mind taking a look at Space music when you get a chance. Nice work on the map/template for Yonge-University-Spadina (TTC) subway line. I was also working on this but I felt that the linear layout did not properly show the U shape of the line. I recently found a template that that lets you put text on both sides and therefore place the east and west stations geographically across from each other. If you think this is a better depiction of the line you may take the code and update it with the additional information you have. What I noticed is that your attempt to show the crossovers and interchanges for St. George and Bay stations which are NOT used in the operation of the trains confuses the route of the subway train. Perhaps we could work on an additional diagram to show these tracks and Lower Bay Station, to be placed beside the sections of Bay (TTC), Museum (TTC) and St. George (TTC) stations that refer to this. Secondarywaltz 20:15, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Nice work. I like that map. I've made a few minor edits to it; most importantly, it was missing Glencairn. I've updated the template, and asked people to share their views on which is better on the talk page. Regarding the interchanges at St. George and Bay, I think it's important to show them, to indicate the system's capabilities. It would be nice to have them in the light blue of not in use track to distinguish them, but I don't think the necessary tiles exist. I've brought this point up on the talk page, as well. It would also be nice to have Union Station at the bottom of the loop, but, again, non-existent vertical interchange symbols appear to prevent that. Please feel free to edit it further, if it can be improved. Cheers,—Ketil Trout (<><!) 22:02, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Notability of Serif Systems

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Serif Systems, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Serif Systems seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Inaccessible Island and dab pages

In instances where there is one major usage of a name and several smaller ones it is conventional to leave the major one in the namespace and have a link in the top to the others (or to Inaccessible Island (disambiguation). Surely 99.9% of people interested in Inaccessible Island are going to be looking for the main one, so wouldn't it have made more sense to have left it there rather than making it a redirect? Sabine's Sunbird talk 03:17, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Apologies for the delay in response. I really don't know what the usage statistics are for those pages; but, if they're as skewed as you say, perhaps my changes should be undone. Cheers—Ketil Trout (<><!) 01:32, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
My own apologises for the tardiness of my reply. I never got round to requesting a move, but have moved it now. The majority of the klinks to Inaccessible Island were after the Tristan one. Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:27, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Quick note

First, excellent work on CSD taggings. However, I just wanted to drop a note to say that you should put {{db-redirtypo}} above the REDIRECT line; otherwise, the page still redirects and admins have to click back to delete the page. Thanks. hbdragon88 (talk) 00:38, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, good point; I'll remember that.—Ketil Trout (<><!) 00:40, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Page redirects?

Just curious... it seems that you are moving pages like Harold Elliott (football coach) to Harold Elliott, and have done that to many, many pages. Since these pages are a part of Wikipedia:WikiProject College football, we've put together many pages on small college football coaches specifically with the tag "(football coach)" to prevent confusion of other people with the same name. Anyway, if this is you or one of your bots doing this, for now please stop and if you want to continue please go to the discussion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football about the topic.--Paul McDonald (talk) 14:46, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Surrender Dorothy (musician)

A tag has been placed on Surrender Dorothy (musician) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Done! Adding succession boxes is relatively easy using Template:Succession_box, which will work for most cases. Check out the edit I made to get an idea how to do it.—Ketil Trout (<><!) 20:09, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
Ah, thanks so much. I tried copying the coding of an earlier line in the table, but it seemed to be thrown out of wack by the two-line entry as the first entry in the table. Never mind - you've sorted it all now, you star. Cheers. Jasper33 (talk) 21:57, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Localizer (fictional device)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Localizer (fictional device), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Non-notable fictional object, fancruft.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Ketiltrout! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 935 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

  1. Archana (actress) - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 04:19, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

The article ALC (automobile) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for reference found no support for this article, Fails WP:V and WP:N

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on John Street (Toronto), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 20:17, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:25, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ketiltrout. About the Development environment page, you recommended the "Move" tab. After moving the content page, i modified the Development environment page to get a disambiguation page. I think that using the "Move" tab doesn't work: if i execute the "Move" tab and try to write the disambiguation page under the title "Development environment", the automatic redirection will edit the "Development environment (software development process)" page. What is the right way ? — Chr.aubree (talk) 22:39, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
