Adoption[edit]

I would like to be adopted because I would like to learn how to find out if what you want to add to the page is already on the page without reading the entire thing, and how to find out if an article is notable enough to be added to the site.

=Adoption Offer[edit]

Hello, Sparrows! Thanks for the reply! I only recently learned of he adoption program, and while I am familiar with the basic functions of wikipedia, there are plenty of things I'd enjoy having someone teach me about, specifically about the more intricate details about Wikipedia's Policy as well as Wikipedia's various processes. If you're interested in teaching me these, I'll gladly accept! // 3R1C 12:12, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re: Adoption[edit]

Hi there Fang Aili, I am slowly going through all the users listed as wanting adoption and seing if they are still actively requesting adoption. Some have been on the list for months and either have figured WP out or are inactive. I noticed you have adopted User:Athangjain but his page still has the 'seeking' tag. could you change the tag if you are his adopter? Thanks!

PS, I'll be leaving a note on the Adoption talk page re: this and other stuff in a day or, you might check there if your interested in the program and the talk page isn't on your watch list. Cheers!--killing sparrows (chirp!) 05:42, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Schools & Notability[edit]

Thanks for your comment. I would advise you not to bother trying to establish some kind of consensus on this. If you exclude the comments in the school-related AfDs of one or two users who are easily-enough ignored, it is clear that there is little profound acrimony here. Compared to several years ago when every school debate produced pages and pages and pages of usually-venomous argument, the current state of affairs is a largely happy truce. I would welcome such a policy, as I have noted, but it frankly isn't going to happen. I would observe that so-called (self-styled) inclusionists tend to get very very worked up over such matters - be it schools, or roads, or citation policy, or notability guidelines. I can think of right away a half dozen or so such users who have quit the project in a tantrum of self-righteous indignation, convinced they are somehow warriors of knowledge doing battle against evil. That kind of attitude tends to distort the debate, but at its heart its a boring combination of froth, cant and pablum. Participate in these debates if you wish, but leave it at that: as you say, don't die on this hill, it ain't worth it. Eusebeus 11:47, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think a full-on WP:KEEPALLSCHOOLS policy would create a worse problem than it solved, as some school articles are true sub-stubs ("Dingleberry Primary School is a school in California") which would keep being prodded come what may. Personally, I'd go with some variation on "keep all high schools, everything more junior has to prove it", but that still leads to problems, not least that the equivalent of "high school" varies from country to country. It would also distort WP:ORG quite badly, since it would lead to minor schools being officially more N than prima facie more significant colleges, corporations etc. This is an argument nobody's going to reach agreement on, I think the current case by case resolution is probably the least worst option.iridescenti (talk to me!) 13:03, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • While it may seem the current debate is rather acrimonious, if you remove certain participants to the debate (me, others...), you will see that the case-by-case basis that iridescenti refers to above is actually not a bad way to go, given the intractable nature of the dispute. You can check out these discussions for a taste of what incivility and passion used to prevail (just a small sample):
  1. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Leigh High School
  2. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/West Green Primary School, Crawley

You will note that most of the participants have dropped out of the debate, including users like Kappa, one of the all-time leading wikipedia contributors, confirmed inclusionist (to an absurd extent) and someone for whom most of us have considerable respect, Jaranda, Tony_Sidaway, A_Man_In_Black, Kuzaar, JzG (another all time great editor), etc etc etc.... So don't sweat it. Far better contributors than I (and maybe some others) (and on both sides of the debate) have examined this issue in depth; while some may feel it is still worth replying to every delete vote and explaining how deletionists ignore policy and guidelines, whilst deletionists continue to insist that schools are mortar and not much more, anyone who has been here for a while knows the issue is not easily resolved and has better things to do than waste much time on it. Comment, and be serene whatever the outcome and leave it at that. Eusebeus 23:28, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption[edit]

Hello, I have gone through the entire list of adoptee's and have

  • Removed adoptee tags from users who are indefinably blocked.
  • Asked users whom have been adopted to remove the tags.
  • Offered adoption to users who had no messages.

the plan isnt to adopt EVERYONE on the list, but i am able to adopt a few. I feel that its better to message them and let them know that someone is interested in helping out, then not having anyone at all for them to ask questions to. As well as that, i can always pass them off to other adopters, but it seems like you are one of the only ones that are active. Matthew Yeager 04:46, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ahhhh, i posted my changes in A-A-U, adopters section. I'll visit the regular talk page and post my actions and whatnot. thank you! Matthew Yeager 05:26, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption Revised[edit]

hello again! wow, after reading through the AAU talk page, I think we are on the same track of thinking! you have alot of good ideas and hopefully you will think the same of mine. what kind of templates are you thinking of making and what is the status on them ? i would really like to get this program back on its feet and remove this backlog! let me know what you think about my ideas please. Matthew Yeager 06:12, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption, again[edit]

I've suggested at Wikipedia talk:Adopt-a-User that we (i.e. AAU adopters) go ahead and send out your proposed message later today (UTC - I'm in the UK, so it's 16:10 local time) if nobody else has a view. I'm happy to have a go with WP:AWB, if it helps - I don't know if you've got access (but if not, it's very helpful!). Let me know what you think - I don't want to tread on your toes, and I certainly won't be claiming the credit for this one! Bencherlite 15:11, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New adopter with nothing to do![edit]

Hi.

I've been reading up on your view on the Adoption scheme, and have decided I would be willing to help out although don't feel I should contribute to your discussions for now until you sort your plans out, and I can learn about how the scheme pans out from then on. I have added myself to the adopter table, but have since found that all users awaiting adoption have been offered match ups. Having read about 5 mins earlier about a large backlog, I can only assume that one editor has gone a bit mad and offered to adopt them all. I guess I'll just keep checking and let things calm down a little.

Trident Seafoods[edit]

It's true. Give me a little while to find some sources, but if I can't, I'll remove them. (Umm, I worked as a temp in the human resources department, so I can personally vouch for both statements, but that violates WP:NOR.) Zweifel 00:06, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Hi, 'Killer'..thanks for your response regarding my questions to Matthew. Anyway, do you think Matthew is being a little too enthusiastic in this AAU? He takes on too many adoptees, in my opinion. Zacharycrimsonwolf 13:14, 14 November 2006 (UTC) 14:55, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

adoptees[edit]

yea there was actually an edit conflict for me cause you posted :P so i decided to come back to that one later in case you had more to say. no man, its awesome that you are picking through and helping out where you can ! i really appreciate it! tending to adoptees is now my full-time wiki job :P ummm things are going well so far, i do have alot but i'm managing... getting everyone set up with what they wish to learn. Have some more experienced ones doing some pretty cool stuff. I have had 1 or 2 adopters tell me they can assist me with some, so i'm dishing those out tonight as well! how is everything going for you ? Matthew Yeager 04:56, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive me for butting in here, but... Matthew, it probably isn't a good idea for tending to adoptees to become your full-time wiki job because it prevents you from gaining more experience in other fields that would be useful to help adoptees e.g. by participating in deletion discussions at AfD or CfD, or working with images, or whatever. I'm not saying everybody needs to know everything (and I know I have much to learn myself: I know little about the copyright rules, for example, and you could beat me every time when it comes to computer code) but (looking at your contribution history) you are still quite new here yourself and you've spent much of your time to date reverting vandalism (which is good but often a relatively mundane task) or editing your user/talk page, which boosts your edit count but adds little to the project (see Wikipedia:Editcountitis for an amusing essay!). You need to give yourself a chance to learn more about other areas of WP too in order to become an "all-rounder", which will only help you in helping others and in achieving your long-term goals. Anyway, I am glad to hear that you are managing with your adoptee load - please remember that we're only trying to help you. Sincerely, Bencherlite 09:02, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Advice well taken and that is indeed my plan (to be well rounded in wiki-ness). its just that right now is my "experience the adoption process \ program" time in my wiki lifetime. I defiantly plan on moving on and making more contributions to the mainspace wiki, yet i just felt that the current AAU state of sadness needed some attention. I thank you for your comments and I hope that you will check in later to let me know what you think as I grow here at wiki. thank you! Matthew Yeager 23:44, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(Butting in again, sorry KS!) I understand entirely. I'm going through a "contribute to WP:CFD phase", having previously been in a "let's tackle vandalism phase". The beauty of WP is that there is so much to do, from creating new articles, improving other people's work, defending articles from attack, and sorting them into an orderly system of categories, through to discussing ways of improving WP, helping people and so on. Have fun. I'm off on holiday now for two weeks, but I'm sure everything at AAU will be completely sorted by the time I come back and all your adoptees will have become Bureaucrats in record time! Best wishes, Bencherlite 23:50, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Messaging adopters[edit]

Good idea about contacting the existing adopters, and your message looks fine to me. I would volunteer to do it now, but it's 1.15am and I ought to go to bed right now - and then, as you may have read, I'm off on holiday soon! I suggest that (if you don't have AWB) you make an appeal for someone with AWB or similar to post the message, rather than do it manually, as that would take ages. As for the effect of the new template, I quickly discovered that I know zip about complicated coding. However, the effect of Sopoforic's new template is that existing requests don't update to the new format, but new requesters following the instruction to "subst" the template will be listed in chronological order under "2" at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user - and there is someone there, so someone needs to grab him / her fast! I've just gone and highlighted the instructions for potential adoptees on the main AAU page and the adoptees' area subpage, to make it clear that there are two choices, and to try and hint that asking directly may be quicker. Have a look and see what you think. Anyway, goodnight from London and speak to you in mid-May. Yours, Bencherlite 00:17, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it's probably a good idea to send out a message to adopters--it's not just the potential adoptees who might need a 'wake-up call.' The message that you have provided looks pretty good, too, but you probably ought to include a link to the project and the talk page, just for convenience. Unfortunately, I don't use AWB (although I probably ought to request permission to use it; I just never got around to it), but you should be able to post a request on WP:BOTREQ for someone to send this message to everyone.

Regarding the template I made: I am pretty sure it's not possible to have it automatically order people by date who already have the template on their pages, which is why we have bots that go around adding the dates to maintenance templates. We could do it by hand in perhaps an hour or two, though. If you think that it'd be useful, I wouldn't mind doing it over the next few hours/days. Any people who subst the new dated template, though, will be taken care of automatically. --Sopoforic 16:55, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done with this. I visited every potential adoptee's page and manually inserted the date they first requested to be adopted. We have some from near the beginning of January still needing adoption, so I suppose we should start at the top. --Sopoforic 19:32, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:ADOPT input[edit]

Hello, Killing sparrows. The Adopt-a-User program is looking for new ideas and input on the program. If you are still interested please stop by the talk page and read some of the ideas being floated and give a comment. If you want to update or change your information on the adopter's list page, now would be a great time! Thanks! V60 干什么? · VDemolitions 03:44, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thank you for the cookies!

I have looked at the "List of..." article. My first thought was, this is one very strange topic. Within the context of Judeo-Christian faith, however, it may have some merit. By-passing death is extraordinary. It does carry with it the implication that the individual involved had a special relationship with God. I would think that the list should be reasonably manageable. I can't see it being very useful, though, if it is just a list of special people. And, if it is just a collection of biographies, it defeats the purpose of unique encyclopedia article. (Just go to the individual articles.) Might it be useful to organize the article by translation, assumption, etc.? There is quite a bit of discussion on this already and it might calm some of the concern.

Also, The Gospel of John makes a big deal of Jesus as God. Not every Christian accepts this formula. For some--ELCA--Jesus was fully human and fully God. (It's a mystery.) If he wasn't then the prayer in the Garden makes little sense.ThomasHartman 20:15, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your offer for adoption[edit]

I would like to thank you for your offer of adoption. As you have noticed, I have been able to get around wikipedia. I had to learn on my own, because first I did not know about the adoption process and then for a month no one gave me an offer for adoption. So I had to learn the hard way. But I am still interested in learning more about the wikipedia processes like AfD debates, Anti-Vandalism policies, editing tools etc. I am not sure whether the adoption process is only for starters or even for advanced learning. If you can adopt me and help me in understanding these processes and policies, then I am very much interested in your offer for adoption. Dhshah 15:25, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Micronations project[edit]

Hi and thanks for your message. I think setting up a micronations project would be a great idea. There certainly seems to be enough people interested and knowledgeable in the subject to make it worthwhile, and it would help prevent recurrences of the sort of nasty situation that we've seen in the past week. Unfortunately I don't know what's involved in setting up a project either. Maybe we could float the idea to those who seem most interested and see what eventuates? Unusual Adoption Request[edit]

Hi! Im an English teacher in Toluca Mexico (west of Mexico City). My Advanced B classes will be contributing to Wikipedia as the focus of their English course for Fall 2007. I am looking for people who would like to mentor my students (who will be working in groups) as they do the following assignments: Edit and article (adding a citation), writing a stub with a citation, translating an English language article for Spanish Wikipedia and for the final project, writing a full article for English Wiki (they can expand on the stub mentioned previously). What I would like to do is put a list of "mentors/adopters" on my talk page as a kind of short cut for my students, who have limited time to get things done. The semester begings Aug 6, but the real Wikipedia work wont begin until the beginning of Sept. If you would like to add your name to my list, please go to my talk page and add it there, perhaps with a short introduction, if you like.

Thank you!

May I suggest that this should be moved to User:Killing_sparrows/Earth_jurisprudence? As it stands, there is no easy place to discuss what you are trying to do, aside from Talk:Earth jurisprudence. If you moved it to a subpage of your user page it would have it's own talk page. I'll watch your talk page for a few days, but I generally prefer responses on my talk page. Greetings from the League of Copyeditors. Your name is listed on our members page, but we are unsure how many of the people listed there are still active contributors to the League's activities. If you are still interested in participating in the work of the League, please follow the instructions at the members page to add your name to the active members list. Once you have done that, you might want to familiarise yourself with the new requests system, which has replaced the old /proofreading subpage. As the old system is now deprecated, the main efforts of the League should be to clear the substantial backlog which still exists there.
The League's services are in as high demand as ever, as evinced by the increasing backlog on our requests pages, both old and new. While FA and GA reviewers regularly praise the League's contributions to reviewed articles, we remain perennially understaffed. Fulfilling requests to polish the prose of Wikipedia's highest-profile articles is a way that editors can make a very noticeable difference to the appearance of the encyclopedia. On behalf of the League, if you do consider yourself to have left, I hope you will consider rejoining; if you consider yourself inactive, I hope you will consider returning to respond to just one request per week, or as many as you can manage. Merry Christmas and happy editing, The League of Copyeditors.

Your user name[edit]

Hi, I am concerned at your user name. 'Killing sparrows' is an illegal activity in the UK and possibly other countries. It is also a name which might cause offence amongst many people who seek to safeguard wildlife. I was wondering if you would consider changing it please? The name can be changed at Wikipedia:Changing username. TerriersFan (talk) 15:40, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'm Ral315, editor-in-chief of the Wikipedia Signpost. It appears that you have not edited in at least a few months. To avoid spamming your talk page any further, should you be on leave, your name has been removed from the Signpost spamlist. Proposed deletion of Moto (programming language)[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Moto (programming language), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Not notable

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
